You can ship an app written with an AI coding assistant, but only after it passes five human-controlled release gates: requirements and behavior, secure code review, dependency and supply-chain verification, privacy and governance checks, and deployment readiness. Treat the model’s code, tests, configuration, and infrastructure files as untrusted changes until you have evidence that they meet your requirements and threat model. A green, AI-generated test suite is not proof of security, and an AI-suggested package may be nonexistent, typosquatted, abandoned, or vulnerable. The person or organization that accepts and deploys the output remains accountable for the result.
What are the five release gates for an AI-generated app?
A defensible release requires evidence in five areas, not confidence in the assistant that produced the code. Freeze a release candidate, evaluate each gate, record unresolved risks, and obtain an accountable human sign-off before deployment.

OWASP’s Software Assurance Maturity Model (SAMM) states that “whoever accepts AI output remains accountable for it.” NIST’s AI-specific SSDF Community Profile, SP 800-218A, published in July 2024, adds AI-focused tasks to SSDF version 1.1 across the software life cycle. These gates turn those responsibilities into a release decision you can audit.
How do I prove that the app does what it is supposed to do?
Start with a written behavioral contract, then test the running application against it. Do not let an assistant define success by producing code that merely looks plausible or by generating tests that mirror its own implementation.

Write requirements and acceptance criteria first
For every user-facing capability, state inputs, outputs, authorization rules, error behavior, data retention, and availability expectations. Include security requirements such as tenant isolation, password-reset protections, rate limits, audit events, and what must never be returned to a client. Convert each requirement into an observable acceptance criterion that a reviewer can demonstrate against the built application.
Add abuse cases and negative paths
Model how a malicious or simply confused user could misuse each feature. Examples include changing an object identifier in a URL to access another account, submitting oversized or malformed files, replaying a payment request, bypassing a role check through an alternate endpoint, or injecting instructions into content later consumed by an AI component. Tests should prove that these attempts fail safely, with no sensitive data leak and with useful logs.

Choose tests for risks that earlier checks may miss
Run unit tests for deterministic logic and integration tests across databases, queues, identity providers, and external APIs. Add security tests, negative and abuse tests, fuzzing for parsers and validators, and performance tests for limits identified in the requirements. NIST SP 800-218A specifically calls for executable-code testing selected to find vulnerabilities not identified by earlier review or analysis. A test that only confirms the happy path leaves that requirement unmet.
OWASP SAMM cautions that people remain responsible for defining what must be tested and for checking that AI-generated tests verify intended behavior rather than implementation details. Inspect assertions: a test that merely checks a function returns a value, or mocks away authorization and validation, can pass while the deployed feature is unsafe.
Which AI-generated code needs mandatory human review?
Review every generated change as if it came from an unfamiliar contributor, and require explicit approval for security-sensitive code and configuration. Automated scanners are useful filters, not substitutes for understanding data flow and trust boundaries.

Review the complete change, not just the main source file
Freeze the candidate commit and inspect the full diff, including generated tests, migrations, package scripts, CI workflows, Dockerfiles, infrastructure-as-code, environment files, and deployment manifests. Look for hidden behavior in fallback paths, error handlers, feature flags, and “temporary” debugging output. Confirm that logging does not expose tokens, personal data, or raw user prompts.
Give extra scrutiny to high-impact areas
- Authentication: Verify password hashing, session expiry, multi-factor flows, account recovery, and protection against credential stuffing.
- Authorization: Check every server-side object and action for role, tenant, and ownership enforcement; never rely on a hidden user-interface control.
- Cryptography: Confirm approved algorithms, nonce or initialization-vector handling, key storage, rotation, and authenticated encryption where appropriate. Reject custom cryptographic schemes.
- Input and output handling: Validate by type, length, range, encoding, and allowed format at trust boundaries. Encode output for its destination and protect file, URL, template, and command-processing paths.
- Build and delivery: Treat scripts, CI configuration, container instructions, infrastructure definitions, and deployment settings as executable security code.
Run static application-security analysis, secret scanning, container and infrastructure checks, and a manual threat-model review. Resolve findings or document a risk acceptance with an owner, scope, expiration date, and compensating control. OWASP warns that accepting generated output carries the accountability even when an assistant wrote most of the lines.
How can I verify AI-suggested packages and the software supply chain?
Independently verify every dependency name and version before installation. Never execute npm install, pip install, or go get for a package suggested by an AI until you have confirmed that the package is the intended project in a trusted registry and that its release is acceptable.
Check identity, provenance, and maintenance
Search the official registry and project repository yourself. Confirm the exact spelling, namespace, publisher, supported versions, release history, license, and maintenance activity. AI can invent a package that sounds real, select a similarly named typosquat, or recommend a component whose known vulnerability makes it unsuitable. Compare the requested version with the project’s release metadata and security advisories rather than trusting a copied snippet.
Pin what you approve
Use lockfiles or explicit version constraints that produce repeatable builds, and review transitive dependencies as well as direct ones. Remove unused packages and reject components that cannot be supported or monitored. Configure continuous integration to fail when a vulnerability exceeds your documented severity or exploitability threshold; record exceptions instead of silently ignoring them.

Create a software bill of materials
Generate an SBOM for the release artifact and retain it with build records. It should identify direct and transitive components and their versions so that a newly disclosed vulnerability can be located quickly. NIST’s software-supply-chain guidance, updated November 1, 2024, highlights SBOMs, open-source controls, vendor-risk assessment, and vulnerability management. Where your build system supports it, keep provenance or attestations that connect the artifact to reviewed source and approved build steps.
What privacy, secret, licensing, and governance checks are required?
Map every piece of information that reached an AI tool or was emitted by it, then apply the same controls you would use for any third-party processor and developer. The main risks are often outside the application’s visible features.
Trace data sent to AI services
Inventory source code, prompts, system instructions, credentials, customer records, uploaded files, logs, telemetry, and support transcripts that developers or agents supplied to a model. Confirm that the tool is approved for the data classification involved, understand retention and training terms, and disable or restrict history where policy requires it. Scrub secrets and personal data before sending examples; do not assume a private repository makes a prompt private.
Protect secrets and constrain agent authority
Scan source, commits, prompts, build logs, artifacts, and telemetry for API keys, tokens, private certificates, and connection strings. Rotate anything exposed during development. Give coding agents least-privilege credentials, isolate them from production accounts and signing keys, and require human approval for actions that can publish, alter infrastructure, or access customer data.

Resolve licensing and regulatory duties
Record the models, datasets, prompts, guardrails, generated changes, and review decisions used for the release. Have the appropriate legal or compliance owner review open-source licenses and any obligations attached to generated or incorporated code. Determine whether sector, privacy, accessibility, export, or records-retention rules apply to the app and its AI provider. OWASP SAMM identifies disclosure, excessive agency, intellectual-property and licensing uncertainty, and regulatory obligations as AI-development risks.

The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) advises documenting the creation, operation, and life-cycle management of models, datasets, and meta- or system-prompts, along with limitations, retention, review frequency, hashes or signatures, guardrails, and failure modes. Keep those records version-controlled and accessible to the person who will operate the service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I make the deployment and operations safe?
A secure source tree can still produce an unsafe release if the pipeline, runtime, or recovery plan is weak. Treat delivery configuration as code and test the path from approved commit to running service.
Harden the build and release path
Require protected branches, reviewed pull requests, reproducible builds where practical, and authenticated artifact repositories. Separate development, staging, and production credentials. Keep signing keys and production secrets inaccessible to AI tools and untrusted build steps. Verify that generated package scripts cannot execute arbitrary commands during installation or deployment.

Prove rollback and restore
Before launch, deploy the candidate to a representative environment, back up required data, and perform a rollback or restore rehearsal. Define which previous artifact, database migration, feature flag, or infrastructure version is the known-good state and who can invoke recovery. A rollback that has never been tested is an assumption, not resilience.
Monitor behavior and assign response ownership
Set alerts for authentication failures, authorization denials, error spikes, abnormal resource use, suspicious data access, and abuse patterns. Ensure logs are time-synchronized, access-controlled, and scrubbed of secrets. Name the incident owner, escalation path, and communications responsibility before release; decide which events require disabling a feature, rotating credentials, or notifying affected users.

How do I run the final pre-ship release gate?
Use this sequence for each release candidate, and retain the evidence with the build record.
- Freeze and record: Tag the candidate and document the AI tools, model versions, prompts or system instructions, generated files, human edits, and approvals involved.
- Reconcile requirements: Execute acceptance, unit, integration, security, negative, abuse, fuzz, and performance tests selected from the requirements and threat model. Investigate every unexpected result.
- Review the diff: Have a qualified human inspect application code and all security-sensitive configuration, including identity, cryptography, input handling, package scripts, CI, containers, and deployment files.
- Analyze the build: Run static analysis, secret detection, container and infrastructure checks, and verify that findings are resolved or formally accepted.
- Validate components: Confirm package identity and versions, inspect transitive dependencies, remove unused components, pin approved versions, run vulnerability audits, and generate the SBOM and available provenance records.
- Close data and governance issues: Check provider retention and approved-tool policy, scan prompts and artifacts for sensitive data, rotate exposed credentials, and obtain license and compliance decisions.
- Exercise operations: Verify least-privilege credentials, protected signing keys, monitoring and alerting, backups, rollback or restore, and incident ownership in a staging or production-like environment.
- Sign and release: Record residual risks, compensating controls, risk owners and expiry dates. Release only after an accountable human signs the decision.
What does a defensible “ship” decision look like?
The decision is defensible when another engineer can trace each important claim to an artifact: a requirement to a passing test, a sensitive code path to a review approval, a component to a verified registry entry and SBOM, a data transfer to an approved policy, and a deployment to a tested recovery procedure. If any of those links is missing, delay the release or narrow its scope until the uncertainty has an owner and an explicit control. AI accelerates production of changes; it does not transfer responsibility for operating them safely.

Can a passing AI-generated test suite prove that my app is secure?
No. Generated tests may reproduce the implementation’s assumptions, omit negative paths, or mock away the very controls that need testing. Have a person derive tests from requirements and abuse cases, then inspect the assertions and run them against the deployed configuration.
What should I do if an AI tool saw a production API key?
Treat the key as compromised: revoke or rotate it immediately, review access logs, and determine whether related credentials or data were exposed. Preserve the incident record and update prompt-scrubbing and agent-permission controls before continuing development.
Do I need an SBOM for a small internal application?
An SBOM is useful whenever you may need to identify affected components quickly, including internal tools. Whether it is mandatory depends on your organization, customers, contracts, or regulators, but generating one at build time is generally the simplest way to maintain that inventory.
Should I tell users that AI helped build the app?
Disclosure requirements depend on your jurisdiction, contract, sector, and how AI is used in the product. Separately from public disclosure, keep an internal record of models, prompts, generated changes, reviews, limitations, and failure modes so operators and auditors can understand the system.
