Can You Play Toastie on Two iPhones? What Works and the Best Side-by-Side Setup

There is no verified two-iPhone multiplayer setup for Toastie. The official US App Store listing documents a single-player grilled-cheese game with individual score cards, Game Center leaderboards and achievements, and iCloud progress syncing across your own devices. It does not document a host screen, join code, phone pairing, synchronized local match, Bluetooth connection, shared-Wi-Fi room, AirDrop handoff, or SharePlay mode.

Two people can still play alongside each other: install Toastie on both compatible iPhones, start the same recipe at an agreed moment, and compare the resulting stars or score cards. That is a house-rule challenge, not a built-in multiplayer match. The steps below show what each player needs, how a round works, and which features should not be mistaken for two-phone play.

What is the difference between playing alongside someone and local multiplayer?

Local multiplayer normally means two devices join the same game session, with a host-and-join flow or synchronized turns. Toastie’s published materials describe neither of those functions. They describe each player completing orders independently and receiving a personal result.

That distinction matters because several Toastie features can sound multiplayer-related at first glance:

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Game Center: the App Store listing identifies leaderboards and achievements. It does not present Game Center as a way to invite another player into the same Toastie round.
  • iCloud: the listing says, “Your progress syncs with iCloud across your devices.” That refers to one person’s progress on devices signed in to the same Apple account, not a shared match between two people.
  • iPhone Duo: on that one foldable device, closing the hardware folds the virtual toaster lid and opening it checks the toastie. It is a physical control for one phone, not a bridge between two phones.

Because the official documentation does not rule out an undisclosed feature, the accurate conclusion is no verified two-iPhone multiplayer setup, rather than a claim that two-device play is definitively impossible.

What do you need before setting up two iPhones?

Each person needs a separate compatible device and their own copy or eligible access to the app. The US App Store listing checked on October 29, 2026, showed Toastie version 1.2.1 at $2.99 and a requirement of iOS 18.0 or later.

Device and account checklist

  • An ordinary iPhone running iOS 18.0 or later. Toastie also runs on iPad, but an iPad is not required for this side-by-side setup.
  • Toastie installed from the App Store on each device.
  • An Apple account able to download the app. The listing indicates Family Sharing for up to six family members; it does not promise that unrelated accounts can share one purchase.
  • Enough time to complete the same recipe on both phones without interrupting either round.
  • A comparison rule agreed in advance, such as highest total stars, a gold score card, or the best score on a selected recipe.

Price and availability can change, so check the US App Store listing on the day you install it. The version and price above are the values observed on October 29, 2026, not a guarantee of a future listing.

How do I set up a two-person Toastie challenge?

Set up both phones independently. Do not look for a pairing screen, room code, or multiplayer toggle; the published Toastie instructions do not provide one.

  1. Check iOS on both phones. Open Settings, tap General, then Software Update. Confirm that each ordinary iPhone meets the App Store requirement of iOS 18.0 or later.
  2. Install Toastie on each device. Open the App Store, search for Toastie, verify that the listing is the grilled-cheese game, and install it on both phones. If you are relying on Family Sharing, make sure the people using it fall within the sharing arrangement shown by Apple; the Toastie listing does not extend that eligibility to unrelated accounts.
  3. Open the app separately. Launch Toastie on each iPhone and complete any first-run prompts. Keep the phones on their own screens; there is no documented step for connecting them.
  4. Choose one recipe and a scoring rule. Toastie’s base description lists 10 standard recipes and 14 ingredients. Four stars unlock the next recipe, while five stars turn a score card gold. Pick the same unlocked recipe on both phones and decide whether the winner is determined by total stars, gold cards, or the detailed score card.
  5. Agree on a start signal. One player can say “start” or use a normal countdown. Starting together makes the comparison fairer, but it does not synchronize the apps or create a shared game session.
  6. Keep each phone independent. Do not switch to another app or attempt to send an invitation during the order. Each phone is calculating its own preparation, cooking, and serving result.

How does a Toastie round work on each iPhone?

Both players follow the same build–GRILL–check–serve sequence. The App Store description gives 15 seconds for assembling an order; the developer’s website separately explains that the grilling phase has no displayed timer and relies on the sizzle and lamp.

1. Build the order within the preparation window

Use a finger to butter the bread, then drag the cheese and fillings onto it. The 15-second figure applies to assembling the order. It is not a published target for the cooking phase, so do not start a second countdown when the grill begins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Press GRILL

When the sandwich is assembled, press the on-screen GRILL control. On an ordinary iPhone, the lid is an on-screen element. The official description does not give a fixed number of grill seconds.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

3. Read the grill cues

The developer’s website describes the cooking phase with the sentence, “No timer. Just the sizzle and the lamp.” Watch and listen for those cues instead of treating the 15-second assembly allowance as a cooking timer. Open the virtual lid when you judge the toastie ready.

4. Serve and read the score card

Serve the finished toastie. The score card assesses the recipe, plating, toasting, and preparation time. Record the stars or save a screenshot if you want a durable result for your challenge. A five-star card is gold according to the App Store description.

Repeat the same process on the second phone. The apps are not exchanging events, so one player’s grill action, score, or unlock does not appear live on the other device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should two people compare their results fairly?

Use a rule that both players can follow without relying on undocumented app data. The simplest approach is to choose one recipe, start at the same spoken signal, and compare the completed score cards after both players serve.

Simple house-rule formats

  • Single-round stars: the player with more stars wins. Use the gold-card result as a tiebreaker if both cards show five stars.
  • Best category: compare the recipe, plating, toasting, and preparation-time assessments shown on the cards. Decide before starting whether every category counts equally.
  • Recipe ladder: play a series of unlocked recipes and award one point for each round win. This keeps the competition going without pretending the app is running a tournament.
  • Personal-best challenge: each player competes against their own previous card, then compares improvement. This works even when the phones have different unlock progress.

Write the rule down or announce it before the first order. Toastie does not provide a shared scoreboard, so any running tally must be maintained outside the app.

Can two iPhones connect in Toastie over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi?

No connection method is verified in the official Toastie materials. They do not document Bluetooth pairing, a shared-Wi-Fi lobby, an AirDrop exchange, a QR-code room, or a host-and-join flow.

Do not infer a connection feature from iOS controls that exist for other games. Apple’s general guidance for inviting friends or using SharePlay applies only when an individual game supports those functions. It is not a Toastie-specific setup and cannot create a match that Toastie has not documented.

For the same reason, buying a generic Bluetooth accessory or a physical sandwich maker will not turn two independent Toastie sessions into local multiplayer. The app’s scoring and synchronization behavior comes from the software, not from kitchen hardware or a wireless accessory.

Does Game Center let us play the same Toastie round?

Not according to the published feature description. Game Center support is listed for leaderboards and achievements, which can let players compare progress or accomplishments, but the listing does not describe invitations into a live Toastie order.

A leaderboard comparison is asynchronous: each person completes a round on their own device and the service records eligible results. It is different from two players seeing the same order, sharing a timer, or taking synchronized turns. Treat Game Center as a way to compare supported records, not as evidence of local multiplayer.

Does iCloud progress sync mean two people can share Toastie?

No. The phrase “Your progress syncs with iCloud across your devices” describes continuity for one player using multiple devices. It can help that player keep progress available when moving between an iPhone and iPad, but it is not a two-person session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Signing two people into the same Apple account to force shared progress would also make their game data indistinguishable and is not a documented multiplayer workaround. Use separate accounts and independent sessions for a clean comparison.

Do I need an iPhone Duo to play with another person?

No. Two ordinary compatible iPhones are sufficient for the side-by-side challenge. The iPhone Duo is optional and changes how one device is controlled: folding that single phone closes its virtual toaster lid, and opening it checks the toastie.

Owning two ordinary iPhones does not recreate the Duo’s fold gesture, and owning one Duo does not connect it to a second phone. Consider the Duo only if you specifically want its one-device physical control; it is expensive overkill for the two-iPhone question.

What changed in Toastie version 1.2.1?

The US App Store release notes observed on October 29, 2026, listed version 1.2.1 and three Halloween toasties, along with a Game Center award. Those additions do not establish a host screen, phone pairing, or synchronized match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The base description still refers to 10 standard recipes and 14 ingredients. Keep the seasonal Halloween recipes separate from that base-menu count rather than silently calling the game a 13-recipe standard menu. A developer response also discussed a forthcoming freestyle mode; it should not be treated as released until the App Store listing confirms it.

Because app features, prices, and availability can change, recheck the live US listing before organizing a paid challenge or relying on a particular seasonal recipe.

What should I do if the two-phone challenge is not working?

Most problems in this setup come from treating an independent comparison as a connected match. Use the symptom below to identify the appropriate fix.

There is no invite or multiplayer button

That is consistent with the published Toastie materials. Stop looking for a hidden pairing flow, update both apps from the App Store, and use the independent side-by-side format instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The phones show different recipes or unlocks

Each device has its own progress state. Choose a recipe that is unlocked on both phones, or use the personal-best format so different unlock levels do not decide the outcome.

One player finishes before the other

Toastie does not publish a synchronized turn timer. Restart the challenge with a spoken start signal, and compare completed cards only after both players have served.

  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

The result seems unfair because one player used a different timing rule

Separate the 15-second assembly allowance from the grill phase. Both players should use the same interpretation of the sizzle and lamp cues; the official developer description does not provide a fixed grill-time number.

Progress appears on the wrong device

Check which Apple account and iCloud settings each device uses. iCloud progress syncing is intended for a player’s own devices, so mixing accounts can make a two-person comparison confusing rather than collaborative.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the honest verdict on Toastie local multiplayer?

Toastie is suitable for two people competing informally on separate phones, not for a documented two-device local match. Install it independently, select the same recipe, start together by agreement, complete the build–GRILL–serve sequence, and compare score cards or stars afterward.

If a future release adds a room, invite, or synchronized-turn feature, that would change the answer and should be confirmed in the current App Store notes. Until then, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Game Center invitations, iCloud, SharePlay, and the iPhone Duo should not be presented as ways to connect two Toastie phones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can both players use one Toastie purchase through Family Sharing?

The US App Store listing indicates Family Sharing for up to six family members. It does not say that unrelated accounts can share one purchase, so eligibility depends on Apple’s family-sharing relationship and settings rather than on Toastie providing a multiplayer license.

Does Toastie contain ads or in-app purchases?

The App Store listing says the app has no ads and no in-app purchases. Its privacy disclosure is developer-reported and explicitly not verified by Apple, so that disclosure should not be read as an independent privacy audit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I play the side-by-side challenge on an iPad?

Toastie is listed as working on ordinary iPhones and iPads. An iPad can therefore serve as one player’s independent screen, but using an iPad does not add a connection or synchronized-match feature.

Will freestyle mode make Toastie multiplayer?

A developer response discussed a forthcoming freestyle mode, but the available release information does not show it as released in version 1.2.1. Even if freestyle arrives, its existence alone would not prove two-device multiplayer; look for explicit host, join, or synchronized-play documentation.
