No—an ordinary PS5 cannot run your Steam library, and a Steam purchase does not turn into a PS5 game license. The practical legal alternatives are to run the game on a gaming PC and display it on your TV, use Steam Link to stream that PC to a supported client, play natively on a Steam Deck, or use GeForce NOW when your specific game, region, device and membership qualify. PS Remote Play is separate: it streams games running on a PlayStation, not games from Steam.
Trying to make a hacked PS5 run Steam also conflicts with Sony’s US PS5 system-software agreement, which restricts modifying system software and bypassing security features. No. Sony does not provide a Steam client for an unmodified PS5, and Steam games do not become PlayStation games merely because you own them on Steam. In the supported alternatives, the game runs on a Windows, Linux or SteamOS computer/handheld, or on a cloud gaming server; the PS5 is not the Steam host.
Your realistic choices are:
- Gaming PC plus TV: connect the PC directly to the television. The PC runs Steam and the TV acts as its display.
- Steam Link: install Valve’s client on a supported phone, TV device, computer or tablet and connect it to a computer running Steam. Valve describes it as connecting a device to “any computer that’s running Steam” (Valve Steam Remote Play).
- Steam Deck: run compatible games locally on a portable SteamOS handheld and optionally dock it to a TV.
- GeForce NOW: stream eligible PC games from NVIDIA’s cloud after linking a supported storefront account. A Steam purchase alone does not guarantee eligibility.
None of these requires modifying the PS5.
Why is a hacked-PS5 Steam setup a poor legal recommendation?
Sony’s US PS5 system-software agreement, version 2.0, says: “You may not lease, rent, sublicense, publish, modify, patch, adapt or translate System Software.” It also restricts unauthorized software and attempts to bypass security mechanisms (Sony PS5 system-software agreement).

That wording is a contractual platform restriction, not a statement that every form of console modification is a crime everywhere. Your country may have different terms and laws. It is enough reason not to present a jailbreak as a supported Steam solution: it can create account, warranty, update, security and online-service problems, while still failing to provide an official Steam entitlement or reliable game compatibility.
What is the best alternative if I already own a gaming PC?
Use the PC as the host and choose between a direct display connection and streaming. Direct PC-to-TV connection is usually the simplest arrangement because the computer renders the game locally; a suitable HDMI or DisplayPort-to-TV setup avoids adding a streaming client.
Option 1: Connect the PC directly to the TV
- Connect the gaming PC’s video output to an input on the TV with a compatible cable or adapter.
- On the TV, select that input.
- On the PC, open Steam and launch the game.
- Pair a compatible controller with the PC, or run a long USB cable to your seating position.
- Set the game’s resolution, refresh rate, HDR and display mode to match what the TV supports.
This is not a claim about a particular cable’s latency or picture quality; it is simply the shortest path when the PC and TV are near each other. The game still runs on the PC, not on the TV or PS5.
Option 2: Use Steam Link when the PC is elsewhere
Steam Link sends the PC’s Steam session to a supported client over your home network. Valve lists clients including iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Android phones and TVs, Amazon Fire TV, Windows, Linux and macOS, among others (Steam Remote Play and Steam Link). A SHIELD TV can also be configured as a Steam Link client using the manufacturer’s setup guidance (NVIDIA SHIELD TV Steam Link guide).
Steam Link does not remove the requirement for a host computer. The host must be powered on, signed in to Steam and able to launch the game. An Apple TV, Android TV box, Fire TV device or another PC is a client, not a replacement for that host. An unmodified PS5 is not listed by Valve as a Steam Link client.
How do I set up Steam Link?
- Install Steam on the host computer, sign in and enable Remote Play in Steam’s settings.
- Install the official Steam Link app on a supported client.
- Connect the client and host to the same home network for the initial pairing. Wired Ethernet is an option for either device when available.
- Open Steam Link, select the discovered computer and enter the pairing code shown on the host.
- Pair or connect a controller that the chosen client supports.
- Select a game from the Steam library shown by Steam Link and start streaming.
If the computer is not discovered, confirm that both devices are on the same network, Steam is running and any firewall rule permits Steam and Remote Play. If video appears but controls do not, check the client’s controller support and the game’s input settings. Streaming quality depends on the network and host hardware; Valve’s page does not promise a universal latency or image result.

Can I use Steam Link to stream directly to a PS5?
Not through an officially listed Steam Link app. Valve’s supported-client list includes televisions, mobile devices and computers, but not the PS5. You can place a supported client beside or behind the same TV used with your PS5, or connect the gaming PC directly to that TV, but the PS5 itself is not the Steam Link endpoint.
Do not confuse this with PlayStation’s own Remote Play. PS Remote Play streams PS4 or PS5 games from a PlayStation console to supported devices; it does not import a Steam library.
Is Steam Deck the best native handheld alternative?
Steam Deck is the most direct way to play a Steam library away from a desktop because games run on the handheld rather than being streamed from a PS5. It is not a promise that every Steam title works perfectly. Valve classifies games as Verified, Playable, Unsupported or Unknown on its compatibility system (Steam Deck compatibility information).
Before buying a Deck for a particular game, open that game’s Steam store or library details and read the reasons behind its rating. A “Playable” result can require manual control changes, an on-screen keyboard or a launcher step. Check for anti-cheat, third-party launchers, middleware, text size, controller prompts and online-service requirements. “Unknown” means Valve has not supplied a useful compatibility verdict; it is not an assurance of failure or success.

Valve’s product page lists 256GB LCD, 512GB OLED and 1TB OLED configurations (Steam Deck). These are the configurations shown by Valve, not a guarantee of current stock, regional pricing or retailer authenticity. LCD and OLED models use the same compatibility-rating system, so an OLED purchase does not turn an Unsupported game into a supported one.
Choose capacity around the games you actually intend to install. Large modern games can consume substantial storage, and a microSD card can expand space, but storage expansion does not change performance or compatibility requirements. Confirm the seller, warranty region and return policy when purchasing outside Valve’s own store.

How do I play Steam Deck games on a living-room TV?
Use a dock or compatible USB-C hub. Valve’s Docking Station connects either an OLED or LCD Deck to a TV and supports controllers and other peripherals (Steam Deck Docking Station). Valve also notes that third-party hubs and docks are possible; check a specific model’s video connector, power delivery, USB ports and compatibility before buying.
- Connect power to the dock, then connect the dock to the TV.
- Place the Deck in the dock or connect it through the hub’s USB-C cable.
- Select the dock’s HDMI or DisplayPort input on the TV.
- Pair controllers with the Deck and launch the game from Steam.
A dock only carries display, power and peripheral connections. It does not run games by itself; the Deck remains the computer doing the rendering.

Can I play Steam games on a TV without owning a gaming PC?
Sometimes, through GeForce NOW, but only when your exact title and circumstances qualify. NVIDIA says GeForce NOW can connect supported storefront accounts, including Steam, and stream games available in its catalog (GeForce NOW FAQ). You generally must own a paid game, yet ownership does not mean every Steam purchase is playable on the service.
What must I check before relying on GeForce NOW?
- Game availability: search the current GeForce NOW catalog. Some titles require publisher opt-in or are unavailable despite being sold on Steam.
- Install-to-Play status: NVIDIA’s Install-to-Play feature is limited to eligible premium memberships and participating publishers. Check the current listing rather than assuming it applies.
- Account and region: link the correct Steam account and confirm that GeForce NOW operates in your country and supports the title there.
- Device: NVIDIA lists supported device types including SHIELD TV, Android TV, Steam Deck and ASUS ROG Ally, alongside computers and mobile devices. Supported features can vary by device.
- Network: NVIDIA lists 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 frames per second and 25 Mbps for full HD at 60 frames per second on listed device categories, and recommends connecting to a data center with less than 80 ms network latency (GeForce NOW system requirements). These are service requirements, not a guarantee of your actual result.
- Plan limits: NVIDIA’s 2026 FAQ documents 100 hours of monthly premium playtime for standard Performance and Ultimate memberships, with up to 15 unused hours rolling over. It lists exceptions, including Founders membership, so re-check the current terms before subscribing (NVIDIA FAQ).
How do I check a game before subscribing?
- Search the game by exact title in GeForce NOW’s current catalog.
- Confirm the supported storefront is Steam, not a different PC edition.
- Read any note about publisher opt-in, launcher behavior, DLC or regional restrictions.
- Verify your device, membership tier and network meet the listed requirements.
- Only then buy or renew a plan. Do not purchase a second copy merely because a catalog entry exists; first confirm which account and storefront ownership it recognizes.
GeForce NOW is therefore a conditional substitute for a gaming PC, not an unrestricted mirror of your Steam library. If your most-played games are absent, a local PC or Deck is more dependable.
Does PS Remote Play play Steam games?
No. PS Remote Play streams games that are running on a PS4 or PS5 to another supported screen (Sony PS Remote Play). Sony lists 5 Mbps as a minimum and 15 Mbps as recommended for Remote Play, but those figures describe PlayStation streaming and should not be applied to Steam Link or GeForce NOW.
If a game has a separately sold PlayStation edition, verify its ownership and account requirements. Buying the Steam edition does not normally grant the PlayStation edition, and Remote Play cannot bridge that licensing gap.

Use five decision questions: Do you already own a capable PC? Do you need local execution or is streaming acceptable? Are your exact games Deck-verified or listed by GeForce NOW? Is your main screen a desk monitor, TV or handheld? Can your controllers, display and network support the chosen setup?

Steam Link cannot find the computer
Start Steam on the host, enable Remote Play, and confirm both devices are on the same network. Temporarily check firewall permissions and router isolation settings. If discovery still fails, pair using the client’s code flow or connect the host and client by Ethernet where possible.
The stream is blurry or repeatedly pauses
Reduce the stream resolution or frame-rate target in Steam Link, move the client closer to the router, or use Ethernet. Close downloads and other traffic on the home network. These steps address transmission conditions; they do not make an unsupported game compatible.
A Deck game launches but controls or text are wrong
Re-read the game’s compatibility details, try the recommended community or official control layout, and check whether a launcher requires touch input. If the title is marked Unsupported because of anti-cheat or a launcher, a different control layout will not remove that underlying limitation.

Search the current catalog again, confirm the storefront account, and check regional and membership restrictions. Do not assume a temporary outage or a Steam ownership receipt means the title is entitled to cloud play. If the listing is absent, use a local PC or Deck instead.
The TV shows no picture from a Deck dock
Verify power, the selected TV input, the dock’s cable direction and the dock’s supported output. Test the Deck’s built-in display, then check for firmware updates. A third-party hub may need different power delivery or display settings; consult its specifications before declaring the Deck incompatible.

What is the safest legal path?
Keep the PS5 unmodified, use software and hardware supported by their manufacturers, and buy games through the storefront that actually grants the entitlement you need. Check Sony’s agreement for your territory, Valve’s per-game Deck rating, NVIDIA’s current catalog and plan rules, and the compatibility of your chosen client, controller, dock and TV. Those checks take longer than installing an unofficial hack, but they avoid making a PS5 depend on unsupported software that still cannot guarantee access to your Steam purchases.
