Yes, but “Steam cloud gaming” describes three different features. Steam Remote Play and Steam Link stream a game that is running on your own computer. Steam Cloud synchronizes supported saves and settings; it does not run the game remotely. Steam Cloud Play connects eligible Steam titles to cloud providers, currently documented through NVIDIA GeForce NOW, where the game runs on the provider’s servers. That last option can let you play without a gaming PC, but only when the title is supported, the publisher has opted in where required, the service is available in your region, and your account and membership meet the provider’s rules.

The right choice depends on where you want the game to run, which device you have, and whether your specific title is supported. The guide below separates the services, gives setup steps, and shows what to check before you start.

What does “Steam cloud gaming” actually mean?

Steam uses similar cloud terminology for three separate capabilities. Confusing them leads to the most common failed setups: expecting a save-sync feature to stream a game, or assuming every Steam purchase can run on a cloud server.

Feature Where the game runs What you need What it does not do
Steam Remote Play / Steam Link Your own computer A computer running Steam with the game installed, plus a supported client device It does not remove the need for a host PC
Steam Cloud Play A participating cloud provider’s infrastructure A supported title, connected store account, provider access, and a suitable connection It does not make every Steam game cloud playable
Steam Cloud Nowhere; it is storage and synchronization A title whose developer enabled Steam Cloud and compatible account access It does not install or execute the game in the cloud

Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes Cloud Play as a beta connection between Steam and cloud services. It identifies NVIDIA GeForce NOW as the first connected service and requires publishers to opt titles in. Availability, supported games, and provider rules can change, so a game being in your Steam library is not proof that it can stream from a provider.

Can I play my Steam games in the cloud without a gaming PC?

You can play without a gaming PC only through a provider-supported cloud service, such as an eligible GeForce NOW title. Steam Remote Play cannot do this: it sends the picture and sound from a computer you own, so that computer must be powered on, signed in to Steam, and able to run the game.

For paid games on a cloud service, you generally must own the title through a connected store account. Some free-to-play games are supported as well. The provider’s live catalog and regional service availability are the final authority; neither Steam ownership nor a game’s presence in the Steam store guarantees cloud access.

How does Steam Remote Play work?

Remote Play turns your computer into the host. Steam captures the host game’s video and audio, sends that stream to a phone, tablet, TV, handheld, or another computer, and sends your keyboard, mouse, or controller input back. The demanding rendering happens on the host, while the receiving device mainly decodes video and displays it.

This means a modest client can show a game that would not run locally. It also means the host’s graphics performance, CPU load, storage speed, and network connection still determine the game’s frame rate and loading behavior. Remote Play can work between your own computers or over the internet, but latency rises when the route between host and client is longer or congested.

How do I set up Steam Remote Play Anywhere?

Use Remote Play Anywhere when you want to launch a game on one computer and view it on another computer or a Steam Link client.

  1. Prepare the host. Sign in to Steam on the computer that has the game installed. Keep Steam running and confirm that the title launches normally on that machine.
  2. Prepare the receiving device. Sign in to Steam on another computer, or install Steam Link on a supported phone, tablet, TV, streaming device, Raspberry Pi, or Meta Quest headset.
  3. Pair the devices if prompted. Steam Link may display a pairing code. Enter it in the Steam client on the host and approve the connection.
  4. Open the library. On the receiving device, select the host computer and open its Steam Library.
  5. Launch the title. Choose the game and press Play. The host starts the game; the receiving device displays the stream and forwards your controls.
  6. Check input and quality. In the Steam Link performance or streaming overlay, verify that the controller is recognized and watch for packet loss, frame drops, or unusually high latency before changing resolution or bandwidth settings.

For a TV arrangement using Steam Link hardware, Steam’s support guidance lists four essentials: a computer running Steam, a display, a home network, and an input device. Steam recommends a wired network for the host or other fixed equipment where possible. The original Steam Link hardware has been discontinued, so check current availability and supported alternatives rather than assuming a new unit can be purchased from Steam.

Which devices support Steam Link?

Steam’s current Remote Play overview lists Steam Link support for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro, Android phones and tablets, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, Raspberry Pi 3, 3+, 4, and 5, Windows, Linux, macOS, and Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro. Device and operating-system support can change; consult Steam’s current compatibility list before buying hardware or planning a deployment.

The Android support page specifies Android 5.0 or newer and recommends a 5 GHz wireless router. That is a source-specific requirement and recommendation, not a guarantee that every Android device will deliver identical latency or image quality. A Bluetooth controller is optional for a phone or tablet, but compatibility varies by operating system, game, and controller.

Why is Steam Remote Play laggy or blurry?

Most problems come from the path between host and client rather than from Steam account settings. Diagnose the connection in this order:

  • Use Ethernet for the host. A wired host connection removes one unpredictable wireless hop. If the client is on Wi-Fi, use a 5 GHz network when practical and stay near the access point.
  • Stop competing traffic. Large downloads, cloud backups, video uploads, and other streams can fill the connection and cause packet loss. Pause them on both ends of the session.
  • Check host load. Close unnecessary applications and confirm the game is not saturating the host’s GPU or CPU. A game that is already dropping frames locally will stream those drops.
  • Reduce the stream workload. Lower the streaming resolution or bandwidth limit in Steam Link’s settings if the network cannot sustain the current quality. A stable lower-resolution stream is usually more playable than a high-resolution stream with retransmissions.
  • Test controls separately from video. If the picture is clear but input feels delayed, the issue is latency. If controls respond but the image breaks up, investigate bandwidth and packet loss.
  • Update the client and host. Steam, Steam Link, the operating system, graphics drivers, and controller firmware can all affect capture and decoding.

For play outside your home, the host computer must remain on and reachable, and both sides need a reliable internet path. Exact performance depends on distance, routing, Wi-Fi conditions, and the game’s own input timing; Steam does not publish a universal latency guarantee.

What is Steam Remote Play Together?

Remote Play Together is for supported local multiplayer games. One player owns and launches the game on the host computer, then invites Steam friends to join remotely. Guests do not need to own or launch that game, because their screens and inputs are connected to the host session.

Steam’s overview describes support for up to four players, with more possible over fast connections. The host can share controller input or, where appropriate, keyboard and mouse access. Not every local multiplayer title supports the feature: open the game’s Steam store page and look for the Remote Play Together designation before promising that a group can join.

Because the host is running the game, the host’s hardware and connection affect everyone. A cooperative game may work well with a moderate delay, while a competitive action game can feel poor even when the video looks sharp.

What is the difference between Steam Cloud and cloud gaming?

Steam Cloud is a synchronization service. Developers choose which files a title sends to Steam, commonly save games, configuration files, or settings. When you sign in on another computer, Steam can download the synchronized data so the game can continue from the stored state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open the game’s store page and look for the Steam Cloud indicator. The developer decides exactly what is included, when synchronization occurs, and whether every mode or save location is covered. If a title does not support Steam Cloud, or synchronization is disabled, progress may exist only on the computer where it was created.

Cloud gaming is execution, not storage: a remote machine installs and runs the game, encodes the output, and sends you an interactive video stream. A cloud session may use a fresh virtual PC. Steamworks therefore warns that a title without Steam Cloud or another online save system can leave progress behind when the session changes. Check save support before using an install-on-demand cloud title.

How does Steam Cloud Play through GeForce NOW work?

Steam Cloud Play connects Steam’s library and account information to a participating provider. NVIDIA GeForce NOW is the first provider identified in Steamworks’ documentation. The provider runs the game in its data center and streams the result to an approved app, browser, or device.

Ready-to-Play versus Install-to-Play

NVIDIA distinguishes two categories for Steam titles:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Ready-to-Play: the provider has prepared the game image so an eligible user can start streaming without waiting for a personal installation.
  • Install-to-Play: the publisher has opted in and the game is installed into cloud storage for your session. Startup and storage behavior can differ from a pre-prepared title.

These labels describe provider handling, not a promise that every Steam purchase works. Confirm the title in NVIDIA’s current catalog, check whether your country is served, and verify that the Steam account you connect owns the game when ownership is required. Provider membership options, storage allowances, queues, session limits, and supported apps are subject to change; consult NVIDIA’s current membership and FAQ pages for the terms that apply when you play.

What should I check before starting a cloud session?

  • The game appears in the provider’s current catalog and is available in your region.
  • Your Steam account is connected to the provider account and two-factor or other sign-in checks are complete.
  • You own the paid title through an eligible store, or the free-to-play title is explicitly supported.
  • Steam Cloud or the game’s own online save system is enabled if the session may use a new virtual machine.
  • Your device, browser, controller, and network meet the provider’s current requirements.

Which option should I choose: Remote Play or cloud-hosted play?

There is no universal winner. Choose based on the location of the game, the title’s eligibility, and the equipment you already have.

Decision point Steam Remote Play / Steam Link GeForce NOW / Steam Cloud Play
Where the game runs Your own Steam computer The provider’s cloud infrastructure
Home gaming PC Required and must be running Steam Not required
Game selection Any game your host can run and stream, subject to Remote Play support for special features Only titles in the provider’s supported catalog; publisher opt-in can apply
Accounts and payment Steam account and an owned or installed game; no separate Remote Play cloud subscription is identified by Steam Connected store account, ownership for paid titles, and provider access or membership rules
Network path Host-to-client home or internet connection; Steam recommends wired networking for Steam Link hardware Internet connection to the provider’s data center
Saves Uses the host’s local save and whatever Steam Cloud support the title provides Steam Cloud or another online save system is important when sessions use new virtual PCs
Client choices Steam Link-supported phones, tablets, TVs, computers, Raspberry Pi devices, and supported Meta Quest headsets Provider-supported apps, browsers, devices, and regions

Use Remote Play when…

  • You already have a capable desktop or laptop and want to play on a phone, tablet, TV, or another computer.
  • The game is not listed by a cloud provider but runs correctly on your host.
  • You want to avoid a second service’s catalog, account, or membership rules.
  • You need the host’s complete local game installation, mods, or settings.

Use cloud-hosted play when…

  • You do not own a gaming-capable PC.
  • Your title is explicitly supported by the provider in your region.
  • You accept provider access rules, possible queues or session limits, and the need for a dependable internet connection.
  • Your saves are synchronized online so a new virtual machine cannot erase unsynced progress.

What are the biggest limitations to plan for?

  • Catalog gaps: Steam has a much larger library than any provider-supported catalog. Publisher opt-in and technical preparation determine eligibility.
  • Regional differences: A service, game, or feature may be unavailable in your country even when documentation exists in another market.
  • Input latency: Every option adds capture, transmission, decoding, and input-return time. Remote Play adds the host-to-client route; cloud gaming adds the route to the provider.
  • Save coverage: Steam Cloud is developer-controlled. Inspect the store page and in-game save behavior instead of assuming every file synchronizes.
  • Changing service terms: Provider plans, supported devices, storage, and membership limits are live-service details. Check the current provider documentation before paying or promising a setup to someone else.
  • Host dependence: Remote Play stops when the host sleeps, loses Steam connectivity, closes the game, or cannot sustain the workload.

What is the practical answer for a phone, TV, or travel setup?

For a phone or TV in the same home, start with Steam Link and a host PC connected by Ethernet. Install the client, pair the controller, launch from the library, and lower stream quality if the wireless network is unstable. For travel or a device with no gaming PC behind it, first search the provider’s current catalog for the exact game and region; only then decide whether a cloud membership meets your needs.

Keep Steam Cloud enabled where the title supports it, but treat it as a safety and transfer mechanism rather than a substitute for either streaming method. The simplest reliable plan is to test one game, one controller, and one network path before buying accessories or committing to a longer session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Steam Remote Play when the host computer is asleep?

No. The host must be awake, signed in to Steam, and able to launch the game. Power-management settings that put the computer to sleep will end or prevent a Remote Play session.

Do I need a controller for Steam Link on a phone?

Not always. Steam Link can forward compatible touch, keyboard, mouse, or gamepad input, but the controls a particular game exposes depend on its design. A Bluetooth controller is optional, and compatibility should be checked for the phone and operating system you use.

Can I play a Steam game on GeForce NOW if I bought it from another store?

Only if that store edition and account connection are explicitly supported by the provider. Ownership is checked against the eligible store account, so do not assume that a title purchased outside Steam will unlock the Steam version.

Why did my cloud-session save disappear?

A cloud session may have used a new virtual PC, while the game had no synchronized save available. Check the title’s Steam Cloud status and its own online-account save system before starting another session, and allow synchronization to finish before closing the game.
