No. PS Plus cloud games need an internet connection because the game runs on PlayStation’s servers and is streamed to your device. To play without internet, download an eligible game to your PS5 or PS4 first. That is a different way of playing, and offline access can still depend on the game’s own requirements, its license, and your console settings.
The distinction matters before a trip or outage: a game you streamed is not automatically available offline just because you own a console or PlayStation Portal. Here is how streaming and downloads differ, what the connection figures mean, how saves are handled, and what to check before relying on a downloaded game away from the internet.

Why can’t you play a PS Plus cloud game offline?
Cloud streaming does not install the game on your console or Portal. Your device connects to PlayStation’s servers, where the game runs; the service sends you the video and audio while receiving your controller input. Without an internet connection, the device cannot maintain that session, so the streamed game cannot continue.
PlayStation’s cloud-streaming guidance says a broadband connection with at least 5 Mbps upload and download is needed to establish a PS5 streaming session. That is a minimum connection requirement, not an offline mode or a promise that streaming will work without a connection. A connection that drops during play interrupts the session, and bandwidth shared with other users or devices can affect the experience even when a speed test meets the minimum.

This applies whether you stream on a PS5 or use a supported cloud-streaming feature on PlayStation Portal. Owning the device does not make the streamed game local: Portal cloud streaming also requires an internet connection.
What is the difference between streaming and downloading a PS Plus game?
Streaming runs the game remotely and sends it over the internet. Downloading installs an eligible game on the console, using its local storage. A downloaded title is the route to investigate for offline play, but a download alone does not guarantee that every game will run offline in every subscription or license state.

PlayStation’s catalog presents separate Stream and Download actions for eligible games on PS5 and PS4. If you want to play without a connection, choose Download rather than Stream when the game offers that option. A title’s presence in the catalog does not by itself establish that it is available to download, stream, or play offline in every situation.
Downloading also changes the practical cost of preparation. You need enough free console storage and enough time to complete the installation while online. PlayStation’s overview notes that downloads can often exceed 100 GB, so a large catalog title may require substantial space and a long download even on a fast connection. A PS5-compatible M.2 SSD can provide optional extra storage for people who regularly install large games, but extra storage is not a requirement for cloud streaming and does not remove license checks.
How do you prepare a PS Plus game for offline play?
Download the game to the console you plan to use, then check its own requirements and license state before you lose internet access. PlayStation’s general service information does not establish that every downloaded catalog game remains playable offline under every subscription or licensing circumstance.
- Check the game’s available options. In the PS Plus catalog on PS5 or PS4, look for the game’s Download option. If the catalog offers only Stream for that title or device, you cannot turn that streamed session into offline play.
- Download and install it while connected. A streamed game does not already exist as an installed local copy. Leave time for the download and installation, make sure the console has enough available storage, and allow for any updates the title requires.
- Check the particular game’s requirements. Some titles may have requirements beyond being installed. Consult the game’s information and instructions, and do not assume that a catalog download guarantees offline access. A game may also rely on an online service for particular modes or features even when its basic campaign starts locally.
- Confirm your console’s license and account settings. A game’s license and the console configuration can affect access. Check these while online rather than assuming that a subscription or prior download settles the question. Keep the console and account you will actually use in mind; installing on one device does not automatically establish access on another account or console.
- Check the save you intend to use. If you have been playing the streamed version, make sure the save you need is available to the downloaded version. The two modes do not automatically transfer saves between them.
- Run an offline test. Before travel, disconnect the console from the network or otherwise test the title in the circumstances you expect. Testing one game does not prove that another catalog game has the same licensing behavior, but it can reveal a missing save, required sign-in, or update while you still have time to fix it.
These checks reduce surprises, but they are not a guarantee for every title. If offline access is essential, verify the specific game’s behavior before travel rather than waiting until the console is disconnected.

Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Does PS Plus Premium let you play cloud games offline?
No. Premium is the PS Plus tier PlayStation identifies for cloud streaming, but the membership makes streaming available; it does not remove the internet requirement or convert a cloud game into a local install.
Streaming and downloading are separate catalog options. If a game is eligible for download on your console, installing it is the relevant step to investigate for offline access. If you select Stream, the game still runs remotely. Catalog availability and subscription benefits can vary, so check the options shown for your account, region, console, and title.
There is no universal offline entitlement attached simply to seeing a game in the Premium catalog. A membership can lapse, a title can leave the catalog, or a license can be checked differently from one game to another. Do not cancel or change a plan immediately before a trip without confirming that the installed title still launches under the account and console settings you will use.
Can PlayStation Portal stream PS Plus games without internet?
No. Portal cloud streaming still needs broadband; the Portal does not store a cloud-streamed game as a playable offline copy. PlayStation lists a minimum of 7 Mbps for 720p and 13 Mbps for 1080p cloud streaming on Portal.
Those figures are streaming thresholds, not offline-play requirements. PlayStation also lists an active Premium membership, a PlayStation account that is not a child account, broadband, and presence in a supported region for Portal cloud streaming. Only select PS5 games can be streamed on Portal, and supported availability may vary by region.
A Portal and a console are not interchangeable for this question: the offline route described here is downloading an eligible game to console storage. The Portal cloud-streaming requirements do not establish that a downloaded console game can be played offline on Portal. If your plan is to take only a Portal on a trip, check the service and regional requirements for the location and connection you will have; a console download does not turn Portal cloud streaming into local play.

What happens to your saves when you switch between streaming and downloading?
PlayStation handles saves differently for the two modes: streamed-game saves are stored on PlayStation, while downloaded-game saves are stored on the console. The save does not automatically transfer from one mode to the other.
PlayStation says cloud storage can be used to transfer saves. If you plan to move from streaming to a downloaded version, check that the save you need is available to the console before you go offline. Do this while you still have a connection; a save that remains only in the other mode will not be made available merely by installing the game.
Save handling is separate from game access. Having the right save does not establish that a title’s license permits offline play, and having an installed game does not ensure the streamed and downloaded versions share a current save. If progress matters, open the downloaded version online, confirm the expected save appears, and make a small test save before disconnecting.
What should you check before travel or an internet outage?
Use this checklist while the console is still online. The key is to verify the individual title, rather than infer offline access from its PS Plus listing or from having streamed it before.
- Confirm that the game has a Download option for your PS5 or PS4, and install it on the console you will take or use.
- Check the game’s own requirements and the console’s license and account settings.
- Make sure there is enough local storage for the game and its installation data; delete or move other games only after confirming you can reinstall them later.
- Confirm that the save you want is available to the downloaded game; use cloud storage to transfer it if needed.
- Test the title’s offline behavior before depending on it for a trip or outage.
- Keep in mind that Portal cloud streaming and console cloud streaming require internet; they are not substitutes for a local installation.
- Finish required updates and sign-ins while online, and avoid assuming that a game downloaded today will remain in the catalog indefinitely.
PlayStation’s pages explain streaming requirements, catalog actions, and save handling, but they do not establish a universal offline rule for every downloadable title. A successful test of one game should not be treated as proof that another game will behave the same way.

Does 5 Mbps guarantee that PS Plus cloud streaming will work well?
No. PlayStation identifies 5 Mbps upload and download as a minimum to establish a PS5 cloud-streaming session. That figure is not a guarantee of stream quality or uninterrupted play.

Can I switch a running cloud game to offline mode by disconnecting Wi-Fi?
No. Streaming depends on an active connection to PlayStation’s servers; disconnecting the network does not turn the remote session into an installed local game.
Can I download every PS Plus cloud game to my console?
Not necessarily. PlayStation’s catalog shows separate Stream and Download actions for eligible games, so check the options for the particular title and console rather than assuming every streamed game is downloadable.
Do I need PS Plus Premium to play a downloaded catalog game offline?
Premium is the tier PlayStation identifies for cloud streaming. Download eligibility and offline licensing are separate questions, so check the game’s catalog option, account license, and title-specific requirements instead of assuming the tier alone decides access.
Will my streamed save appear automatically in the downloaded version?
No. PlayStation says streamed and downloaded games handle saves differently and do not automatically transfer them. Use cloud storage to move the save while you are online, then verify it on the console.
Does PlayStation Portal work offline if the game was downloaded to my PS5?
No. Portal cloud streaming requires broadband, and the Portal does not turn a console installation into an offline local copy. Portal requirements also include Premium, a non-child PlayStation account, and a supported region.
Is extra PS5 storage required for offline PS Plus games?
No. Additional storage is optional. A downloaded game uses the console’s existing storage, while cloud streaming avoids installing the game; large downloads may nevertheless require substantial free space.
The Bottom Line
Cloud-streamed PS Plus games cannot be played offline. For offline use, download an eligible title to a PS5 or PS4, transfer and verify any needed save, and test that specific game before you lose internet access. Premium, Portal ownership, or a completed download alone does not guarantee offline play.
