Yes—Minecraft friends can play together on different devices when everyone uses the same edition. Bedrock Edition connects supported consoles, Windows PCs, Android and iPhone/iPad. Java Edition connects Windows, macOS and Linux computers. Java and Bedrock are separate multiplayer networks, so a Java player cannot join a Bedrock world, and a Bedrock player cannot join a Java Realm. Check the edition first, then confirm versions, accounts, permissions and any console online-service requirement.
What does “different platforms” mean in Minecraft?
“Different platforms” can mean different hardware, such as an Xbox and an iPhone, or different computer operating systems, such as Windows and macOS. Minecraft treats those situations differently depending on the edition being launched. The edition—not simply the device name—determines whether players share a multiplayer network.

Bedrock is the edition designed for broad cross-device play. Its supported platform list includes Windows 10/11, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android and iOS. Java is the computer-focused edition and supports Windows, macOS and Linux. A group must select one of those two multiplayer ecosystems before anyone creates a world or buys a Realm.
Which Minecraft edition should a mixed-device group choose?
Choose the edition that every player can install on their device. For a console-and-mobile group, that normally means Bedrock. For a group using only Windows, macOS and Linux computers, Java is also available.

| Friends’ devices | Edition for shared multiplayer | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10/11, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android or iOS | Bedrock Edition | Console players may need the online subscription required by their console platform. |
| Windows, macOS or Linux computers | Java Edition | Every player must launch Java and use a compatible, up-to-date version. |
| A mixture of Java players and Bedrock players | No direct shared world | Everyone must switch to the same edition where their device supports it; Realms do not bridge editions. |
Windows is the unusual case because it can be used for either edition. Ask a Windows player to identify the launch option they use rather than assuming that “Minecraft on PC” means Java or Bedrock.
Can Java and Bedrock players play together?
No. Java Edition and Bedrock Edition cannot join the same world, server network or Realm through Minecraft’s normal multiplayer systems. They use different underlying multiplayer services, so owning Minecraft on the same computer does not merge the editions.
This is the most common source of failed invitations. A Java player may see a friend online while still being unable to join that friend’s Bedrock world. The practical fix is to have everyone launch the same edition. A Windows player can usually select the edition that matches the rest of the group; a macOS or Linux player is limited to Java, while a console or mobile player is generally using Bedrock.
Minecraft’s own edition guidance summarizes the rule plainly: “This means that Java and Bedrock players can’t play together – so make sure to ask your friends which version they have.”
How does Bedrock crossplay work across consoles, Windows and phones?
Bedrock is the route for groups spread across consoles, Windows 10/11, Android and iOS. Once every player is in Bedrock and running a compatible current release, the host can invite the others from the game’s multiplayer interface or use a Bedrock Realm.

An Xbox, PlayStation or Switch player can play with a Bedrock player on Windows. The console does not need to match the computer brand; it needs to run the Bedrock edition and satisfy its platform’s online-multiplayer requirements.

Phone and tablet combinations
Android and iOS devices also use Bedrock, so mobile players can join Bedrock friends on supported consoles or Windows. Touch controls and performance differ from a controller or keyboard, but those input differences do not create a separate multiplayer network.
What Bedrock does not solve
Bedrock does not make Java compatible. A Bedrock copy on Windows, Switch or a phone still cannot enter a Java world. It also does not remove account, version, permission or subscription checks.
How does Java crossplay work between Windows, macOS and Linux?
Java crossplay is computer-to-computer. Windows, macOS and Linux players can share a Java world when they launch Java Edition and use a compatible game version.
Java players should compare the version shown in the launcher before attempting to connect. A server or hosted world can reject a player whose release does not match. Updating everyone to the same current release is the simplest approach; if a group intentionally uses an older release for a particular server, every participant must follow that server’s version requirement.
A Java group cannot add a console or mobile player merely by sending an invitation. Those devices use Bedrock, so the group would need to move to Bedrock on devices that support it or remain a Java-only computer group.
How do you set up a Minecraft session for friends on different devices?
Use this order so an edition mismatch is found before anyone spends money or configures a world.
Rank #3
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures

- List each player’s device and launch edition. Have each friend check whether the title screen or launcher says Java Edition or Bedrock Edition. “PC” alone is not enough information.
- Choose the common edition. Select Bedrock for groups containing Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Android or iOS. Select Java only when every player is on a Windows, macOS or Linux computer and can use Java.
- Install or launch the same edition for everyone. On Windows, make sure nobody accidentally starts the other edition. Console and mobile players generally remain on Bedrock.
- Update to a compatible release. Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements call for the latest release or a version compatible with the host or server. Update before troubleshooting invitations.
- Sign in with the required Microsoft account. Use the account associated with the relevant platform and game license. Child accounts may need multiplayer permissions enabled by a parent or organizer.
- Check the connection method. For online play, use a stable internet connection. For a local session, confirm that devices are on the same LAN and still meet the edition requirement.
- Confirm console online access. Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch list their own online-service subscriptions as requirements for console multiplayer. Activate the applicable service before testing an online invitation.
- Choose a host, world or Realm. The host can open a multiplayer world, or the group can use a Realm belonging to the same edition. Invite each player using the in-game account and multiplayer controls.
- Test with one additional player first. If that connection succeeds, add the rest of the group. Testing in stages makes it easier to identify an account, permission or device-specific problem.
Do Minecraft Realms work across platforms?
Realms are private, cloud-hosted servers, but “cross-platform” applies only inside one edition. A Bedrock Realm accepts Bedrock players across its supported devices. A Java Realm accepts Java players on Windows, Linux and macOS. A Bedrock player cannot join a Java Realm, and a Java player cannot join a Bedrock Realm.
Minecraft’s Realms FAQ states: “Yes, Realms is cross-platform, but it’s only available within the same game edition.” The Realm owner should therefore verify every invitee’s edition before paying for a plan or moving an established world.
Realm plans and player limits
| Realm option | Listed price at the cited page | Simultaneous players listed | Edition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bedrock Realms | $3.99 USD per month | Owner plus two players | Bedrock |
| Realms Plus | $7.99 USD per month | Owner plus ten players | Bedrock |
| Java Realms | $7.99 USD per month | Owner plus ten players | Java |
Those prices, player limits, trials and included features can change by region and over time. Check Minecraft’s current Realms page before subscribing. A subscription does not remove the edition rule or a console platform’s separate online-service requirement.
What accounts, permissions and subscriptions are required?
- Matching editions: Every participant must be in Bedrock or every participant must be in Java.
- Compatible versions: Keep clients current, or use the exact version required by the host or server.
- Microsoft account: Sign in where Minecraft or the platform requires it so friends and invitations can be associated with the correct player.
- Child-account permissions: A family-managed account may have multiplayer disabled. A parent or administrator must allow multiplayer and, where applicable, communication features.
- Console online service: Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch identify Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus and Nintendo Switch Online, respectively, as requirements for their console online play.
- Network access: Use stable internet for remote friends, or a functioning LAN for players sharing a local network.
These checks are independent. A player can have the correct edition but still be blocked by a disabled child-account setting, an expired console subscription or an incompatible version.
What should you do when a friend cannot join?
The friend is not visible in the invite list
Confirm that both players are signed into the intended Microsoft accounts and that the account’s multiplayer permissions allow online play. Recheck the edition before changing network settings; a Java player and Bedrock player will not appear as compatible participants for the same world.

The invitation appears, but joining fails
Compare the exact game versions and update the older client. If the host is using a server or Realm, verify that it belongs to the same edition as the joining player. On a console, check the platform’s online subscription as well as the internet connection.
Rank #4
Only one device in the group works
Use that device as a control test, then add players one at a time. The failure may be isolated to a child-account permission, a missing subscription or a device running the wrong edition. Avoid rebuilding the world until those prerequisites are confirmed.
A local-LAN session does not appear
Make sure every device is connected to the same local network and that all players are using the same edition. LAN avoids the need for remote internet access, but it does not bypass edition compatibility or account permissions.
Should your group use a Realm, a hosted server or a normal world?
Use a normal multiplayer world when one player is available to host and the group does not need persistent access. Choose a Realm when you want a private, cloud-hosted world that friends can access without the owner keeping the game open, provided everyone uses the same edition and the plan’s player limit fits the group.
Minecraft also allows players to create their own servers in both editions. A self-managed or third-party server can offer more configuration and persistent access, but the operator must select software compatible with the group’s edition and handle setup, backups, access control and maintenance. No hosting provider is universally best; compare edition support, capacity, backup tools, setup effort and total price for your specific group.
| Need | Practical choice | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional session with a few friends | Host a multiplayer world | The host’s availability and connection determine access. |
| Private world available at different times | Edition-matched Realm | Recurring fee and fixed simultaneous-player allowance. |
| Extensive configuration or persistent administration | Self-created or compatible hosted server | More setup, updates, security and backup responsibility. |
Which setup is best for your group?
- Console, phone and Windows mix: Standardize on Bedrock and check each console’s online-service requirement.
- Mac and Linux participants: Use Java, provided every other participant is also on a Java-capable computer.
- Windows players split between editions: Decide whether the group values console/mobile access (Bedrock) or a Java-only computer group, then have Windows players launch the selected edition consistently.
- Existing Java world with a console friend: The console player cannot enter it directly. The group must use Bedrock on supported devices or keep the Java world computer-only.
- Large or frequently active group: Compare a Realm’s simultaneous-player allowance with a server that offers the capacity and controls you need, while keeping the edition identical for everyone.
Frequently asked questions
Can a player switch between Java and Bedrock on the same Windows computer?
Windows supports both editions, so a player can launch whichever edition matches the group. Switching the launch choice does not convert a Java world into a Bedrock world or make the two editions joinable together.
Does a local Minecraft LAN game still require everyone to use the same edition?
Yes. LAN changes how devices discover the host, not which multiplayer network the game uses. Players still need a common edition and compatible versions, and family-account permissions can still prevent multiplayer.
