Yes. If a Steam preorder is still unreleased and you have not been able to play it, you can request a refund before the game launches—even if more than 14 days have passed since you bought it. Use Steam Help’s ordinary purchase-refund process; a delay does not require a separate cancellation procedure, and submitting a request does not guarantee approval or a refund to your original payment method.

The important distinction is whether the game has actually released and whether you have played it through an early or advance-access period. A changed launch date does not itself send your money back. You need to submit a request, and Steam’s signed-in purchase flow will show which refund destinations are available for your transaction.

What changes when a preorder is delayed?

The key date is the game’s actual release, not the date it was originally expected to launch. Before release, a buyer who has not played the game can request a refund at any time. The standard 14-day period for a released preorder starts on the release date, rather than the date you placed the preorder.

That means a postponement does not create a special cancellation process, nor should you use the old announced launch date to decide whether the regular preorder window has expired. If the game is still unreleased and unplayable, use Steam Help to request a refund. The request can be made even when the preorder was purchased more than 14 days ago.

Valve’s Steam Refunds policy, last updated April 23, 2024, says, “You can request a refund for nearly any purchase on Steam—for any reason.” That broad statement is subject to the policy’s eligibility terms and case-by-case review; it is not a promise that every request will be approved. In particular, sending the form is only the beginning of the process: Steam must review the transaction, and the payment options depend on the purchase.

Situation What applies Important detail
Game is delayed, unreleased, and not playable You can request a refund before release, even if the purchase was made more than 14 days ago. Base the timing on the actual release, not the old announced date.
Game has released The standard preorder refund window is 14 days from release, with less than two hours of playtime. These are standard policy terms, not a guarantee of approval.
Early Access or Advance Access was available before full release Eligible pre-release play counts toward the two-hour limit. Beta testing is excepted in Valve’s stated policy; a postponed full launch does not reset eligible playtime.

It is useful to separate three questions: Has the game actually launched? Did you have access to play it before that launch? And, if you did, how much eligible playtime is recorded? A game can still be awaiting full release while offering Early Access or Advance Access. In that case, “not fully released” does not necessarily mean “no playtime counts.” The time spent playing through those access periods can affect the standard two-hour limit.

How do I request a refund for a delayed Steam preorder?

Submit the request through Steam Help while signed in to the account that made the purchase. You do not need a special delay-specific form. The flow is attached to the purchase, so make sure you are using the account that actually placed the preorder rather than another account on the same device.

  1. Open Steam Help and sign in to the account used to buy the preorder.
  2. Select Purchases, then select the preorder.
  3. Choose the problem that best describes your situation, then select I’d like to request a refund.
  4. Complete the form. You can mention the announced delay if it helps explain your request; Valve’s instructions do not make proof of the delay a required field.
  5. Choose an offered refund destination—your original payment method or Steam Wallet—and submit the form. The available options depend on the transaction.

Keep the explanation direct and specific. If the launch was pushed back, you can say that the game remains unreleased and that you are requesting a refund for the preorder. The delay can provide context, but there is no special delay-only eligibility rule to invoke, and Valve’s instructions do not require you to attach proof of the announcement. The purchase itself and its status are the relevant details to select in Steam Help.

Steam says it emails a confirmation when you submit the request and another notice when the refund is processed. Keep the submission confirmation so you can refer to the request if you need to contact Support. Do not treat the first email as evidence that money has already been returned: it confirms submission, while the later notice relates to processing.

Before submitting, check the offered destination carefully. Some transactions let you request a return to the original payment method, while others may offer Steam Wallet credit instead. You should select from the choices Steam presents rather than assume that a particular card or payment account can receive the money.

What if the preorder is missing from Purchases?

First make sure you are signed in to the account that placed the preorder. Then check that you are looking for the correct purchase. Steam says that a purchase missing from the refund list may be too far outside its refund window; if the published preorder rule appears to apply to your purchase, contact Steam Support rather than assuming the purchase is ineligible or that a different refund route will work.

A missing listing can be confusing when the game remains unreleased, because the standard rule permits a request before release. Do not invent a separate route or assume that the absence of the listing settles the question. Explain to Support that the transaction is a preorder for an unreleased game and ask for help with that specific purchase. Steam can review the transaction, but no particular result is guaranteed.

Support can review the specific transaction, but the fact that a game remains unreleased does not guarantee a particular outcome. If Steam declines a request and you believe the inquiry was handled in error, Valve’s FAQ advises sending a detailed new request for review. Include the relevant facts in plain terms—such as the account and purchase involved, the game’s release status, and any eligible pre-release play—rather than assuming the first decision will be changed automatically.

Will Steam refund the original payment method or Steam Wallet?

The choices shown in the request form depend on the transaction. Some payment methods cannot receive refunds to the original method, so do not assume that a card refund will be available; select an offered destination in the form. Steam Wallet credit and a refund to the original payment method are different outcomes: one returns the value to the Wallet, while the other sends it through the payment method used for the purchase, when that option is supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Valve’s preorder FAQ also warns that when a preorder was bought more than six months earlier, a refund to the original payment method may not be possible. Steam Wallet credit may still be requested in that situation. The age of the transaction and payment method can therefore affect where the refund can go, even when you can submit a request. This is why the safest answer to “Will Steam refund my card?” is to check the destination options in the actual request form.

Do not mistake a Wallet refund for a refund of a separately purchased Wallet card. Steam’s policy for a Steam Store preorder concerns the transaction on your account. If you bought a Wallet card from another seller, Valve cannot refund that third-party card purchase; the outside seller’s terms apply to that transaction.

How long does an approved Steam refund take?

Submitting a request is not the same as having it approved. After approval, Valve says a full refund is issued within a week; its common-questions FAQ says approved refunds can take up to seven days to appear. Approved Steam Wallet credit may appear in 24–48 hours, while international payment methods may take longer.

These are processing estimates, not a decision deadline. If you have only received a submission confirmation, wait for Steam’s separate processing notice before treating the refund as complete. The estimate begins with an approved refund, not merely the moment you submit the form, and the payment method can affect when a completed refund appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the refund has been approved but the money has not appeared within the applicable estimate, check Steam’s processing notice and the destination you selected. Wallet credit and an original-method refund do not necessarily appear on the same schedule. For international methods, Valve notes that processing may take longer, so the up-to-seven-day estimate should not be read as a guarantee for every payment route.

What if someone gifted me the preorder?

If you redeemed a gifted preorder, the recipient starts the refund process and approves removal of the game from their account. The purchaser then requests the refund. The gift recipient and buyer therefore have separate steps; the buyer should not expect to initiate the entire process alone.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

In practical terms, the person who received and redeemed the gift must first participate in the removal step. The purchaser then makes the refund request for the purchase. If you are the recipient, contact the purchaser so both parts can be completed. If you are the purchaser, the recipient’s approval is needed before you request the refund. This procedure differs from a preorder bought directly on your own account.

What if I bought a key or Wallet card outside Steam?

Steam cannot refund an external CD key or a Steam Wallet card purchased from a third party. Those transactions were made with the outside seller, not as Steam Store preorders, so contact the seller about its refund terms instead of treating the purchase as a Steam preorder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The distinction is the seller and transaction type, not simply whether the game can be activated on Steam. A Steam Store preorder appears as a purchase on the account and can be selected in Steam Help. A code bought elsewhere is an external purchase, and Valve’s Steam Store refund process does not return the money paid to that outside retailer. Likewise, if you used a third-party Wallet card, the card seller—not Steam—handled the card sale.

Should I file a chargeback instead?

For an ordinary preorder refund, start with Steam Support. A bank chargeback is separate from Steam’s refund process and may restrict accounts and purchases associated with the transaction, so it should not be treated as the normal cancellation route.

A chargeback is not the same as asking Steam to refund a purchase through its standard form. If the issue is simply that a game was delayed and you want to return an unreleased preorder, use the Steam Help purchase flow first. The bank route carries a different account risk and should not be presented as a substitute for requesting a refund in Steam.

What should I do if Steam denies the request?

Valve allows users to submit a request for review even outside its published refund rules. If you believe Steam misunderstood the transaction or your circumstances, explain the issue clearly in a new request; this offers another review, not a guarantee of approval. Valve’s FAQ also advises a detailed new request if the original inquiry appears to have been handled in error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be precise about the point you believe was missed. For example, make clear whether the game is still unreleased, whether it offered Early or Advance Access, and whether any playtime is from beta testing or another eligible period. Do not claim that a delayed full launch resets recorded playtime: Valve’s policy counts Early and Advance Access play toward the two-hour limit, while beta testing is excepted. A clear explanation gives Support the relevant context, but the outcome remains a case-by-case decision.

Which rule matters most: the delay, the purchase date, or playtime?

For an unreleased game that has not been playable, the purchase date alone does not block a request under the preorder rule: you can request a refund any time before release, even after more than 14 days. Once the game releases, the standard time window is anchored to that actual release date, and the usual released-preorder terms include less than two hours of playtime. If the game offered qualifying Early or Advance Access, that time can matter before full launch.

  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Transfer files and from your laptop at speeds up to 10 Gbps with USB A 3.2 port. Extra 2 USB A 2.0 ports are perfectly for your keyboards and mouse.

So the length of the delay is not the main comparison. A short postponement and a long postponement do not call for different refund forms. What matters more is whether the game is still unreleased, whether you had access to play, and whether playtime has accumulated under the policy. The 14-day period does not run from the original announced date, and a new launch date does not reset eligible playtime.

For a delayed game that remains unreleased and unplayable, the practical distinction is straightforward: request the refund now through the purchase page, and make any decision about payment destination based on the options Steam actually offers for your transaction.

What the published figures do—and do not—tell you

The figures in Steam’s guidance are policy terms and processing estimates, not statistics about approval rates. The standard released-preorder window is 14 days from release, with less than two hours played; Valve’s Refunds policy was last updated April 23, 2024. Valve’s common refund questions state that approved refunds can take up to seven days to appear, and approved Wallet credit may arrive in 24–48 hours. Its preorder FAQ warns that purchases made more than six months earlier may not be refundable to the original method.

Steam does not publish a percentage of delayed-preorder requests it approves in these policy pages. A broad approval rate would not tell you what will happen to an individual transaction anyway. The account’s purchase details, payment method, release status, and playtime are the practical facts that determine what request path and destination are available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cancel my Steam preorder if the game was delayed?

You can request a refund for a delayed preorder through Steam Help. The process is an ordinary purchase-refund request, not a separate delay-based cancellation procedure, and the request is subject to Steam’s review.

Does a delayed release automatically send my preorder payment back?

No. Valve’s refund guidance describes a request process, not an automatic refund triggered by a changed release date. If you want your money returned, submit a request through the purchase in Steam Help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I refund a preorder after 14 days?

If the game remains unreleased and has not been playable, you can request a refund before release even if more than 14 days have passed since purchase. After release, the standard preorder window is 14 days from the actual release date, with less than two hours of playtime.

Does Advance Access time count toward the two-hour limit?

Yes. Valve’s stated policy counts eligible Advance Access and Early Access playtime toward the two-hour limit. Beta testing is excepted, and a later full-release date does not reset eligible playtime.

Will Steam refund my card or only my Wallet?

It depends on the transaction. Choose among the destinations Steam offers in the refund form. Some payment methods cannot receive an original-method refund, and a preorder bought more than six months earlier may not be refundable to its original method; Wallet credit may still be requested.

What if I cannot find the preorder in Steam Help?

Confirm that you are signed in to the account that bought it. Steam says a missing purchase may be too far outside its refund window; if the preorder rule appears to apply, contact Steam Support for review rather than assuming the outcome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long will an approved Steam refund take?

Valve says a full refund is issued within a week, and its FAQ says approved refunds can take up to seven days to appear. Wallet credit may take 24–48 hours, while international payment methods can take longer.

Can the recipient refund a gifted preorder?

If the gift was redeemed, the recipient initiates the refund and approves removal from their account. The purchaser then requests the refund.

Can Steam refund a game key or Wallet card bought from another seller?

No. Steam cannot refund an external CD key or Steam Wallet card purchased from a third party. Contact the seller that handled the transaction.

Should I use a bank chargeback if Steam has not refunded me yet?

For an ordinary preorder refund, use Steam Support’s request process first. A chargeback is separate and may restrict associated accounts and purchases, so it is not the normal route for a delayed preorder.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Steam publish the percentage of preorder refund requests it approves?

The Steam policy and FAQ explain eligibility and review, but do not give an approval-rate statistic. A general approval percentage would not establish what will happen with an individual transaction.

Can I ask for a refund if I am outside Steam’s usual rules?

Yes, Valve says you may still submit a request for review outside the published rules. That gives Steam an opportunity to consider the case, but does not promise an exception.

The Bottom Line

If a Steam preorder is still unreleased and unplayable, request a refund through Steam Help; you do not have to wait for the old announced date or stay within 14 days of purchase. After actual release, the standard preorder terms are 14 days from release and less than two hours played, with eligible Early or Advance Access time counting. Steam’s form determines which refund destinations your transaction supports, and submitting a request is not a guarantee of approval.
