Possibly, but Steam does not promise a refund simply because a game used AI without disclosing it. The clearest route is Steam’s ordinary refund policy: request within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. If you are outside those limits, you can still submit a request, but approval is not guaranteed. If the game’s store page or other pre-purchase statements materially misrepresented it, explain the specific discrepancy and provide evidence. Consumer-law remedies may also apply depending on where you bought the game and the facts.
Does Steam have an AI-specific refund rule?
No AI-specific refund entitlement appears in Valve’s published refund policy or its AI disclosure announcement. The ordinary rules still matter: Steam says it will refund a game on request when it was purchased within 14 days and played for less than two hours. What does Valve require developers to disclose about AI?
Valve’s Steamworks Content Survey asks developers to disclose AI use in two broad categories. Valve says it reviews the disclosure before release and will show much of it on the game’s Steam store page so customers can understand how AI is used. Its announcement does not say that every use of AI must be itemized asset by asset, nor does it promise a refund whenever a buyer believes a disclosure was missing.

Pre-generated AI content
This category covers material made with AI tools during development, including art, code, or sound. It concerns content created before a player runs the game. If your concern is that a particular image, voice line, or other asset was AI-generated, keep the evidence that led you to that conclusion and compare it with the actual store-page disclosure or other statements you relied on.
Live-generated AI content
This category covers content created by AI while the game is running. Valve says developers must also describe guardrails intended to prevent illegal output. That requirement describes the developer’s disclosure to Valve; it does not establish that a particular game’s generated output is lawful, safe, or accurately described.
Valve’s announcement, “AI Content on Steam,” dated January 10, 2024, explains the disclosure framework. It should not be read as a separate refund contract with players. The policy materials establish a disclosure process, but do not establish that any specific omission automatically entitles a buyer to money back.
How does the normal Steam refund window work?
For a game, the standard request conditions are purchase within the previous 14 days and less than two hours of playtime. Steam says playtime includes online, offline, and shared-library play, so time in a shared copy can affect whether your request falls within the usual threshold. These are the standard policy conditions, not an AI-specific test.

Steam’s refund page says, “You can request a refund for nearly any purchase on Steam—for any reason,” then qualifies that statement with the time and playtime conditions for games. The practical distinction is between being within the published window and asking Steam to make an exception:

Steam’s published guidance, verified October 25, 2026, describes the ordinary time and playtime conditions. Do not assume that explaining the AI issue resets either clock. If you want Steam to consider the circumstances, submit the request promptly and state the facts clearly.

How do you request a refund and explain undisclosed AI use?
Use Steam Support’s purchase-specific form rather than relying only on a general message. The form lets you select the game and identify that you want a refund. In the explanation, distinguish what Steam can verify—your purchase date, playtime, and archived store-page wording—from what you believe the evidence shows about AI use.
- Sign in to Steam Help.
- Open Purchases and select the game.
- Choose the problem that best describes your reason for contacting support.
- Select I’d like to request a refund and complete the form.
- Explain what the game’s store page or another pre-purchase statement said—or what material information you believe it omitted—and what you later learned.
- Include the purchase date and your playtime, and attach dated screenshots or other reliable records if available.
Make the explanation specific
A useful request identifies the precise representation at issue. For example, describe the wording or image on the store page that shaped your expectations, then explain how the later-discovered AI use appears inconsistent with it. If your concern is only that the store page did not mention AI, say that plainly rather than claiming a particular representation that was never made.

Separate established facts from conclusions. A screenshot may show what a store page said at a particular time; it may not, by itself, establish how a specific asset was made. Likewise, an online claim about an asset’s origin is not necessarily proof. Give Steam the date and source of any evidence you rely on, and avoid presenting speculation as confirmed fact.
Preserve records before the page or game changes
- Save screenshots of the relevant store-page sections, including any AI disclosure, description, or marketing claim you believe matters.
- Keep the purchase confirmation and note the current playtime shown in Steam.
- Record when and where you found evidence about the game’s AI use, and preserve the original source where possible.
- Keep the support submission and any response so you have a clear record of what you asked and when.
These steps make the request easier to assess; they do not ensure that Steam will agree with your interpretation or grant the refund. If the request is denied, the applicable next step may depend on your location and the legal basis for your complaint.
Could consumer law give you a separate remedy?
Possibly. Steam’s Subscriber Agreement says its refund policy applies without prejudice to statutory rights and points EU and UK consumers to separate information about statutory withdrawal rights. A legal right and Steam’s ordinary refund policy are distinct routes: the conditions and consequences of one should not be assumed to satisfy the other. Read the Steam Subscriber Agreement alongside the rules that apply where you bought the game.
EU: withdrawal from an online purchase
European Commission guidance describes a general 14-day withdrawal period for online purchases, subject to exceptions. For online digital content, the withdrawal right can be lost once downloading or streaming has begun if the consumer agreed that starting performance would end the right. That withdrawal question is separate from whether the digital content conforms to the contract or whether a pre-purchase statement was misleading. UK: digital-content rights
The UK Consumer Rights Act 2015 provides a refund remedy for qualifying breaches involving digital content. The statute does not make undisclosed AI use, by itself, proof of a breach. Whether an omission or other statement matters depends on the game, the transaction, the representations made, and the surrounding facts. The relevant legislation is the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

First, check the reason Steam gave and whether the request was handled under the ordinary time-and-playtime policy or the explanation about the AI disclosure. If you have a material detail or record that was not included, you can decide whether to submit a clearer follow-up through Steam Support. Keep the follow-up factual and focused on the store-page representation, transaction, and evidence rather than arguing that AI use alone requires a refund.
If you are considering a statutory claim, identify the jurisdiction and the legal issue before relying on Steam’s response. A denial under a platform policy does not, by itself, resolve whether a separate statutory right exists. Conversely, a possible legal argument does not mean Steam must approve a request under its ordinary policy.
