Yes, but only selectively. The open-source shadPS4 emulator can boot and sometimes play certain PS4 games on a suitably equipped Windows PC, yet its developers describe it as early-stage and warn that many titles still fail or have serious glitches. Bloodborne, Dark Souls Remastered and Red Dead Redemption are among the project’s named runnable examples, not guarantees of a flawless experience. If your goal is simply to play a PS4 game on a computer, Sony’s PS Remote Play is the more predictable route: it streams from a PS4 or PS5 you own, rather than emulating the console locally. The legal position also depends on how you obtain game, update and firmware files; owning a disc is not a blanket permission to bypass protections or download someone else’s dumps.
What PS4 emulation on PC can actually do
PS4 emulation means software on the PC imitates enough of the console’s hardware and operating-system behavior to execute PS4 code locally. The game is rendered by your computer, so no console has to remain switched on and network latency is not part of the emulation itself. In practice, however, PS4 emulation is still a work in progress rather than a replacement for a PS4 library.

The leading public project, shadPS4, says in its own README: “shadPS4 is early in development, don’t expect a flawless experience.” The project names Bloodborne, Dark Souls Remastered and Red Dead Redemption as runnable examples, while also warning that many games do not work or show problems. A successful boot screen is therefore not the same thing as a complete, stable play-through.
Which PS4 games actually work?
Check the exact game in the project’s compatibility tracker before planning a purchase or setup. Its definitions separate playable from in-game: the latter can still include game-breaking crashes, hangs, missing graphics, audio faults or other defects. A title that reaches gameplay may fail at a later chapter, cut-scene or save-load operation.

The tracker is updated by contributors and can change with emulator builds, game patches and configuration. Do not treat an unloaded counter or a single user report as a reliable percentage of the entire PS4 catalogue. There is no established first-party statistic showing an overall playable share, and the project’s compatibility page should be read title by title.

shadPS4 version 0.20.0 was announced on October 13, 2026. Its announcement describes fixes and some shadNet online-play work, including Bloodborne, but that does not establish that every game or online feature works. Treat the version as a dated reference and read the selected release’s notes rather than assuming the newest build solves a particular title.
What hardware and operating system do I need?
For Windows, the project quickstart lists these minimums:
- x86-64-v3 processor with at least four cores and six threads, above 2.5 GHz
- Vulkan 1.3 graphics support, including
VK_KHR_swapchainandVK_KHR_push_descriptor - At least 2 GB of graphics memory
- 8 GB of system RAM
- Windows 10 or later
These are published prerequisites, not a prediction of frame rate, resolution or stability. A machine that meets them may still perform poorly in a demanding game because emulator overhead, driver behavior and title-specific bugs vary. Keep your GPU driver and Vulkan runtime current, but do not interpret the minimum as a recommended gaming specification.
The quickstart also lists Ubuntu 22.04 or later. Mac guidance is inconsistent within the project: the quickstart lists macOS 15.4 with Rosetta 2, while the repository README refers to macOS 26.0 and says Intel Macs are unsupported. Before installing on a Mac, check the requirements attached to the exact release you intend to use; do not infer support from one project page.

How do I set up shadPS4 without crossing legal or safety lines?
You need a compatible PC, the emulator’s QtLauncher, and properly obtained game, update and firmware files. The project’s quickstart says those files should be dumped from your own copies. Its instructions are project guidance, not a court ruling that every dumping method is lawful, so avoid downloads of other people’s packages, keys or firmware.

- Install the official launcher. Obtain QtLauncher from the project’s official distribution and keep it isolated from untrusted repacks. Verify that the download comes from the project’s own release channel.
- Prepare files from hardware and games you are entitled to use. Follow the project’s documented process for your own PS4 system software and your own game media. Do not use a web search for “PS4 ROMs,” shared decryption keys or prebuilt firmware bundles.
- Point the launcher at your legal game directory. Add the game, update and any personally dumped DLC according to the launcher’s instructions. A PS4 disc inserted into a PC drive is not automatically a playable PC installation.
- Start with a supported title. Compare the game’s ID, patch level and compatibility notes with the tracker. Keep save backups and expect that an emulator update can change behavior.
- Troubleshoot one variable at a time. Record the emulator build, GPU driver, game patch and error message before changing settings. If a title is listed only as in-game, a crash may be an emulation limitation rather than a defective PC.
Do not disable security software, install unknown “fix” executables or replace system files merely to make a game launch. Community configuration files can contain unsafe links or copyrighted material; use official documentation and inspect anything before running it.
Can I put my PS4 disc in my PC?
Usually, no—not as a ready-to-play installation. A PC optical drive can read physical media in some circumstances, but PS4 game data is tied to the console’s software environment and may require a properly created dump, updates and other files. The shadPS4 quickstart explicitly treats games, updates and DLC as copyrighted content that must be dumped from your own copy.
Do not assume that buying a physical edition, including a Bloodborne PS4 disc, supplies a PC installer or resolves questions about circumvention. The disc establishes ownership of that copy; it does not authorize downloading a replacement image or bypassing technical protections by any method you choose.
What is the difference between shadPS4, fpPS4 and PS Remote Play?
These options solve different problems. shadPS4 attempts local emulation; fpPS4 is a separate developer-described compatibility-layer project; and PS Remote Play streams output from a real console. There is no evidence here that fpPS4 has equal or better compatibility than shadPS4, so treat it as an independent project rather than a guaranteed substitute.

Sony’s Remote Play page states that a PS4 or PS5 is required. It is therefore not emulation and not cloud gaming: the console performs the work. Sony also notes that some PS4 titles or functions are not Remote Play capable.
Is PS Remote Play the better choice for most people?
If you already own a PS4 or PS5 and want to see and control its games on a Windows PC, Remote Play is generally the straightforward option. Install Sony’s official app, sign in with the same PlayStation account used by the console, pair an eligible controller and keep the console configured for Remote Play. Sony lists Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 as supported PC platforms.
Sony recommends at least 5 Mbps upload and download, or 15 Mbps for the best experience. Those are recommended connection speeds, not a guarantee of latency or image quality. Wi-Fi congestion, router placement, distance and simultaneous traffic can still cause input delay or dropped frames; wired networking is often the simplest way to reduce local interference.
A DUALSHOCK 4 is an optional control choice for compatible PC Remote Play setups, and shadPS4’s README also discusses controller support. Controller compatibility does not make a game compatible with the emulator, however. Remote Play remains dependent on the console, its account and the games installed there.
What are the US legal limits?
Three questions must be kept separate: whether emulator software itself is independently written; whether you possess the copyrighted game, update and firmware files; and whether a technical protection was bypassed to obtain or use them. The existence of an emulator does not authorize downloading somebody else’s game image or system software.

Sony’s US PS4 system-software license grants use of the software for the PS4 and restricts unauthorized security bypass, firmware distribution and certain reverse engineering, subject to applicable law. Separately, 17 U.S.C. §1201 governs circumvention of access controls. Simply owning a console or disc is not a universal exemption from those rules.
The current video-game provisions in 37 CFR §201.40 include a narrowly described situation involving discontinued authentication servers for personal local play, plus separate conditions for eligible libraries, archives and museums preserving games. They do not say that every individual may bypass any PS4 protection to dump any game.
That does not make every act of emulation automatically illegal. The facts, jurisdiction, acquisition method and purpose matter, and this is not legal advice. For a proposed dumping or console-modification workflow, consult a qualified lawyer rather than relying on a forum post or on the emulator project’s statement that files should come from your own copy.

- The game boots, then crashes: Recheck the tracker’s status and notes, match the game patch to the reported build and test a supported release. Do not assume more RAM or a faster GPU will fix an emulation bug.
- Black screen or missing graphics: Confirm Vulkan 1.3 features and driver versions, then compare known-good settings for that title. Graphics corruption can be a renderer limitation.
- Audio stutter or hangs: Treat these as compatibility symptoms, not proof that the dump is bad. Preserve logs and report reproducible details through the project’s documented channels.
- Remote Play will not connect: Confirm the same PlayStation account, console Remote Play settings, controller pairing and network speeds. Remember that unsupported games or functions cannot be fixed by reinstalling the PC app.
- A download asks for keys or a “patched” executable: Stop. Shared keys, firmware bundles and modified game executables create both security and legal risks and are not required evidence that emulation is working.
How we assess the practical choice
The useful criteria are not a single compatibility percentage. They are whether the exact game reaches a completable state, whether a console must remain available, whether the files come from your own lawful sources, what hardware and network conditions apply, and how much troubleshooting you are willing to accept. On those criteria, shadPS4 is an experimental local-emulation project; Remote Play is a console-streaming solution; neither turns a PS4 disc into an unrestricted PC license.
Bottom line: should you emulate PS4 games on a PC?
Use shadPS4 if you understand that compatibility is title-specific and early-stage, have a PC meeting the project’s published requirements, and can obtain every required file through a lawful process. Check the tracker’s detailed status rather than trusting a “boots” video. If you own a PS4 or PS5 and simply want PC controls and a larger screen, Sony Remote Play is the lower-risk, more predictable option because the real console runs the game. Neither path supports piracy, and neither makes US circumvention rules disappear.

Can I play PS4 games on PC without a PS4?
Local emulation can work without a console present during play, but you still need legally obtained game and system files and a compatible title. Remote Play is different: Sony requires a PS4 or PS5 for the stream.
Does shadPS4 run Bloodborne?
The project lists Bloodborne as a runnable example, and its 2026 announcement discusses some shadNet work involving the game. That is not a promise of flawless completion, stable online play or identical behavior across emulator versions.

Is downloading PS4 ROMs legal if I own the game?

Will PS4 games run at 4K on my gaming PC?

Can PS Remote Play work when my console is switched off?
