Yes—many iPhone personal automations in Apple’s Shortcuts app can run without a confirmation prompt. Open Shortcuts, tap Automation, choose the automation, turn off Ask Before Running, confirm Don’t Ask, and tap Done. The choice applies only to eligible trigger types, and an individual action inside the automation may still require its own setting or interaction.
“Duo Automations” is not a term used in Apple’s Shortcuts documentation. This guide treats the question as referring to iPhone personal automations, including time, location, app, NFC and device-state triggers. Apple’s labels and supported triggers can change between iOS releases, so use the wording shown on your iPhone.

Can iPhone personal automations run without confirmation?
Yes. Apple says some personal automations can run without asking you for confirmation when their trigger occurs. You enable that behavior in the automation itself by switching off Ask Before Running; it is not a single global switch for every shortcut.
After you disable the prompt, Shortcuts can start the automation when its trigger is detected. The automation must still be enabled, the trigger must be one Apple allows to run automatically, and every action must be capable of completing under the current conditions. A notification, permission request, authentication requirement or other action-level interaction can interrupt the sequence even when the automation-level prompt is disabled.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
How do I stop Shortcuts from asking before running?
Change the setting on each personal automation that should run unattended. The option is stored per automation, so repeating the procedure may be necessary for several routines.
- Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone.
- Tap Automation at the bottom of the screen.
- Select the personal automation that currently asks for approval.
- Turn off Ask Before Running.
- When Shortcuts displays the warning, tap Don’t Ask to confirm.
- Tap Done to save the change.
Leave the automation enabled. An enabled automation runs, or runs according to its confirmation setting, when the trigger occurs. If you disable it, the automation neither runs automatically nor notifies you that it was skipped.
If the switch is missing, the trigger may not support automatic execution on your iOS version. Apple’s available labels can also differ slightly after an iOS update; open the automation’s details rather than relying on an older screenshot or tutorial.
Which iPhone triggers can run automatically?
Apple lists the following personal-automation trigger categories as capable of automatic execution. Eligibility is tied to the trigger, not to the name of the shortcut. The exception identified in Apple’s guidance is Before I Commute, which cannot run automatically.
| Trigger category | Automatic execution |
|---|---|
| Time of Day | Supported |
| Alarm | Supported |
| Sleep | Supported |
| Arrive | Supported |
| Leave | Supported |

| Airplane Mode | Supported |
| Do Not Disturb | Supported |
| Low Power Mode | Supported |
| Battery Level | Supported |

| Sound Recognition | Supported |
| Before I Commute | Cannot run automatically |
This list describes Apple’s documented trigger categories, not a guarantee that every action attached to one of them will complete invisibly. For example, a supported App trigger can launch a shortcut automatically, while an action inside that shortcut may still ask for access or a decision.

Why does an automation still ask me something after I turn off the prompt?
Ask Before Running controls the confirmation for the automation’s trigger. It does not remove every interaction that an action can require. Apple specifically notes that individual actions may also need to be set to run automatically.

Action-level confirmation
Review the actions in the shortcut editor for options that request approval, display a dialog, or wait for a choice. An action can be configured independently from the automation trigger, so inspect its own settings instead of repeatedly changing the trigger switch.
Permissions and protected data
Shortcuts may need access to information such as location, messages, contacts, notifications or other protected data. If iOS presents a permission request, grant only the access the routine actually needs. Turning off the automation prompt does not override iOS privacy controls.
Actions that require a person
Some tasks are inherently interactive: choosing an item from a list, entering text, approving a transaction or responding to a system dialog. Such a step can pause the automation even though the trigger itself is eligible for automatic execution. Replace it with a fixed value or a noninteractive action only when that change still meets your goal.
Will a no-confirmation automation run while the iPhone is locked?
Not necessarily. The confirmation switch and locked-device behavior are separate decisions. Apple’s Shortcuts guide identifies an Allow Running When Locked privacy setting for allowing a shortcut to run without user interaction, but that setting does not make every shortcut or action safe or eligible to run on a locked iPhone.

Check the shortcut’s details for Allow Running When Locked and consider what the routine can reveal or change before enabling it. A shortcut that reads private content, changes account settings or performs a sensitive action may still be restricted while the device is locked. Test the exact automation in the locked state you intend to use rather than assuming that disabling Ask Before Running is sufficient.
How do NFC-triggered automations work?
An NFC personal automation starts when the iPhone scans a compatible near-field communication tag. Apple says Shortcuts uses the tag’s unique identifier; apart from that identifier, the contents written to the tag are ignored. The tag therefore acts as a physical identifier for the automation, not as a container of instructions that Shortcuts reads.
NFC support is not available on every device. Confirm that your iPhone can scan NFC before designing a routine around a tag. You do not need an NFC tag for time, location, app, charging or other trigger types; it is an optional way to start a routine with a deliberate physical scan.
Example: a scan-triggered routine
- Create a personal automation and choose NFC as the trigger.
- Scan the tag when Shortcuts asks you to identify it.
- Add the actions you want to run after the scan.
- Turn off Ask Before Running, choose Don’t Ask, and tap Done.
- Scan the same tag again to test the complete sequence, including any action-level permissions.
Because the identifier—not the written text—is what matters, rewriting the tag’s visible contents does not create a different trigger. Use a different tag when you need a separate identifier.

Personal automations are device-specific. Apple says an automation is backed up to iCloud but does not sync to your other devices. If you use an iPhone and an iPad, or replace an iPhone, check the automation on the device where you expect it to run instead of assuming the same trigger and settings are present there.

A backup can help preserve the automation as part of your device data, but it should not be treated as live synchronization. After restoring or setting up another device, verify the trigger, the Ask Before Running choice, permissions and any locked-device setting again.
What should I check when an automatic automation does not run?
Work through these checks in order. They separate a disabled automation from a trigger limitation and from an action that cannot run unattended.
- Confirm the automation is enabled. A disabled automation does not run or notify you.
- Check the trigger category. Make sure it is one of Apple’s automatically supported triggers and not Before I Commute.
- Inspect the confirmation switch. Open the automation and verify that Ask Before Running is off and that you selected Don’t Ask.
- Review every action. Look for an action-level setting, dialog, list selection or other step that needs interaction.
- Check permissions. Revisit access for location, contacts, messages or other data the shortcut uses.
- Test the device state. Repeat the trigger with the iPhone unlocked, then test the locked state only if Allow Running When Locked is appropriate.
- For NFC, verify the scan. Use the same identified tag and confirm that the iPhone model supports NFC.
- Check the current iOS labels. Apple can adjust the Shortcuts interface and trigger availability in later releases.
Run a simple test automation first—for example, one that performs a harmless, visible action—before troubleshooting a long sequence. Add actions back one at a time; the first step that pauses or requests input identifies the action-level issue.
What are sensible uses for unattended automations?
Automatic execution is most useful for predictable, low-risk routines. A charger trigger can start a focus mode or set a timer; a time trigger can prepare a morning routine; an App trigger can apply settings when a specific app opens; and an NFC scan can mark a physical location such as a desk or bedside table.
Keep routines that change purchases, send messages, expose private information or alter security settings behind an interaction unless you have a clear reason to remove it. A trigger can occur at an inconvenient time, and an unattended action may be difficult to undo. Use the least powerful action set that accomplishes the task, and test it repeatedly before relying on it.

What is the practical answer for “Duo Automations”?
If you mean iPhone Shortcuts personal automations, the answer is yes for Apple’s eligible trigger types: disable Ask Before Running, confirm Don’t Ask, and save. If the automation still pauses, investigate its individual actions, permissions and locked-device restrictions rather than treating the prompt switch as a universal bypass.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make an automation ask for confirmation only on some days?
The confirmation choice belongs to the automation, not to an individual calendar day. To vary behavior, create separate automations with different triggers or use conditional logic inside a shortcut, while keeping any sensitive step interactive.
What happens if I edit an NFC tag after setting up the automation?
Shortcuts identifies the tag by its unique NFC identifier, so changing text or other stored contents does not change which automation recognizes it. Use a different physical tag when you need a separate trigger.
Will restoring an iPhone recreate all my automation settings exactly?
Apple describes personal automations as backed up to iCloud but not synchronized across devices. After a restore, verify the automation’s enabled state, confirmation choice, permissions and locked-device behavior on the restored iPhone.
Can an automation run automatically if the iPhone has no internet connection?
The trigger and actions determine that outcome. A local trigger and local action may work without a connection, while actions that depend on online services can pause or fail; Shortcuts does not turn an offline action into an online-capable one.
