Yes, ChatGPT can sign in to some websites for you, but that convenience comes with real work and risk. In ChatGPT Work’s cloud browser, the task can pause so you can authenticate through a secure sign-in form; after that, the browser may read pages, click controls, and fill forms. A signed-in session can remain available for later tasks until you clear its browser data. That means the choice is not simply whether to share your password: it is whether to let an agent operate inside an account, with access to information and the ability to take actions.
For a bounded, low-consequence task, supervised browsing may save repetitive clicks. For broad requests or sensitive accounts, the setup, monitoring, and cleanup can outweigh the time saved. OpenAI warns that safeguards reduce risk but do not eliminate it.

What does it mean to let ChatGPT sign in to a website?
ChatGPT Work’s cloud browser is described by OpenAI as a separate computer in the cloud. It can read supported public and signed-in websites, click buttons, and fill forms. When a task needs authentication, it pauses for you to sign in rather than requiring you to type your password into the conversation.
The secure sign-in form sends the credentials to the remote browser, not to the model, according to OpenAI. This is an important boundary, but it does not mean the account itself is hidden from the agent. After access is established, the agent may process the pages, screenshots, and account information needed to complete the task. The difference is between keeping the secret credential out of chat and limiting what the signed-in browser can see or do.

OpenAI’s older ChatGPT agent documentation describes the broader implications of signing into websites or enabling apps: an agent may gain access to emails, files, and account settings, and may share files or change settings on the user’s behalf. The exact feature name, available controls, and rollout can vary by plan, workspace, device, and product changes; the current cloud-browser description is for ChatGPT Work, while separate agent documentation remains available.
Why can the convenience become more trouble than it is worth?
Delegation can remove repetitive clicks, but it adds a new access session to manage. The hidden cost is not just the time spent signing in. You may also need to define the task narrowly, watch what happens, inspect confirmation prompts, clear session data, and check for unexpected account activity.

Access can outlast the task
Cookies and signed-in sessions may persist so future tasks can continue without another login. That is convenient when an agent returns to the same site, but it also means “I finished the task” does not necessarily mean “the account session is gone.” For sensitive work, clearing cloud-browser data is a distinct cleanup step.
The agent may misunderstand what it sees
Web pages are not always neutral instructions. Text in a page, comment, metadata field, or link can try to steer an agent away from the user’s request. OpenAI’s example describes a malicious instruction that attempts to get an agent to retrieve a password-reset code from email and send it to an attacker-controlled site. The lesson is to treat unexpected requests for unrelated information as a stop signal, not as a new task to follow.

Confirmations do not replace judgment
OpenAI says the system requests confirmation before certain consequential actions, such as submitting information or completing a payment, and some tasks require active watch mode. A prompt to approve an action is a chance to inspect it—not a guarantee that the action is appropriate. Check the actual target, recipient, amount, and scope before proceeding.
The password field is not the whole privacy boundary
Even if credentials entered in takeover mode are not visible to the model, the agent can still process page content, screenshots, account data, and task history. OpenAI says chats, browsing history, and screenshots remain in conversation history until deleted, subject to account and plan controls. Avoid assuming that a secure credential-entry step makes everything viewed during the task private from the system or absent from your history.
Is delegated browsing safer or easier than doing it yourself?
It depends on the task. Manual browsing keeps you directly in the decision loop and avoids creating an agent-managed signed-in session. Delegated browsing can reduce repetitive interaction, but it requires more care around scope, persistence, and review.
| Consideration | Manual browsing | Delegated browsing |
|---|---|---|
| Time and effort | You perform the navigation and actions yourself. | May save repetitive clicks, but requires setup, supervision, and cleanup. |
| Information in view | You inspect the account directly. | The agent may process relevant pages, screenshots, and account data after sign-in. |
| Session persistence | You manage the session in your browser. | Cloud-browser cookies and signed-in sessions can remain active until browser data is cleared. |
| Consequential actions | You choose and execute each action. | Some actions require confirmation or watch mode; you still need to inspect what is being approved. |
| Recovery after a mistake | You can stop your own action and review what you did. | You may need to stop the task, clear browser data, inspect account activity, and review ChatGPT sessions. |
Delegated browsing is most defensible when the request is narrow, the account data is not highly sensitive, and you can inspect each step. If the task involves broad authority—such as “handle everything” in email—or an irreversible or high-impact change, doing it yourself gives you tighter control over decisions.

How can I let ChatGPT sign in with less risk?
Keep the task specific, authenticate only on the site you intended, and stay present for anything that changes data or sends information. Use this sequence before, during, and after a session.
- Define a stopping point. Name the exact site and the specific record or information you need. State what the agent should do and where it must stop; avoid open-ended directions such as “check my email and handle everything.”
- Limit access to what the task needs. Enable only the app or site required for the work. Do not grant broader access merely because it might make a future task easier.
- Verify the sign-in destination. Check the domain and sign-in preview, and read the permissions being requested before you authenticate. Stop if the site or requested scope is not what you expected.
- Keep secrets out of chat. Use the secure sign-in form or takeover for passwords, one-time codes, and payment details. OpenAI says not to paste passwords, security codes, or payment details into chat.
- Watch for task drift. If the agent opens the wrong site, asks for unrelated data, or follows an instruction embedded in page content that conflicts with your request, stop the task. Do not supply a code or approve a new action just because the page or agent requests it.
- Inspect each consequential confirmation. Before approving a submission or payment, verify the destination, recipient, amount, and exact information being sent. If the confirmation does not make the scope clear, do not approve it.
- Close the access you no longer need. After sensitive work, clear cloud-browser data. If anything looks unfamiliar, review active sessions and ChatGPT security history; use global logout if you suspect unauthorized activity.
What should I do if ChatGPT stays signed in?
Clear the cloud browser’s data after the task if you do not want its cookies or signed-in sessions retained. The exact control label and location can vary as the product changes, so use the browser or account controls available in your current ChatGPT interface rather than assuming that closing a task has signed you out.

Deleting conversation history is separate from clearing cloud-browser data: OpenAI says chats, browsing history, and screenshots remain in conversation history until deleted, subject to account and plan controls. Consider both the browser session and the conversation record when deciding what cleanup is appropriate.

When is it reasonable to use ChatGPT’s signed-in browser?
Use it when the job is clearly bounded and the cost of an error is low enough that you can comfortably review the result. Examples include retrieving a specific item from a site you recognize or completing a repetitive navigation task where you can verify the final page. The key test is not whether an agent can click through the site; it is whether you can describe a safe endpoint and notice if it goes off course.
Be more cautious with email, files, payment flows, account settings, and anything that could disclose private information or make a consequential change. Those accounts contain material an agent may be able to read or modify after sign-in. If the task cannot be supervised, requires broad discretion, or has consequences you could not easily reverse, manual handling is the more controlled choice.

OpenAI’s safety guidance puts the limitation plainly: “Those measures do not eliminate all risks.” There is no defensible published statistic in the official source set for the success rate of prompt-injection attacks, account compromises, or user harm in signed-in ChatGPT browsing. That absence should not be mistaken for proof of safety; it means there is no supported percentage with which to quantify the risk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can ChatGPT see my password when I sign in?
OpenAI says credentials entered through its secure sign-in form go directly to the remote browser and are not visible to the model. That statement applies to the credential-entry path; it does not mean the signed-in pages or account information are hidden from the agent.

Can I use a one-time code with ChatGPT’s browser?
OpenAI says not to paste security codes into chat. If authentication requires a code, enter it only through the secure sign-in or takeover flow, and stop if the request appears in an unrelated page or message.
Does signing out delete the chat or screenshots?
No. Browser session cleanup and conversation-history deletion are separate actions. OpenAI says chats, browsing history, and screenshots remain in conversation history until deleted, subject to account and plan controls.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is there a published rate for how often ChatGPT browsing is compromised?
The official source set does not establish a rate for prompt-injection success, account compromise, or user harm in signed-in browsing. A percentage would therefore be misleading; assess access by the sensitivity of the account and the consequences of the task.
