Usually not from an intermediate network position. Yggdrasil encrypts traffic end to end, so a transit antivirus appliance or intrusion-detection sensor cannot decrypt the application payload moving through the mesh. It can still see connection metadata, such as peer addresses, and a firewall can restrict reachability or block known public peers.
Detection moves to the endpoints: the computers that terminate Yggdrasil connections and execute the software. There, antivirus and endpoint detection and response (EDR) can inspect files, processes, services, persistence, and behavior. That boundary is an inference from Yggdrasil’s documented encryption model and ESET’s investigation of the MythicRatatoskr backdoor; no cited source supplies a vendor-specific detection guarantee or success rate.

An antivirus engine sees different evidence depending on where it is deployed. Software running on the infected host can inspect the backdoor and the activity it creates. A sensor that only observes traffic between Yggdrasil nodes sees an encrypted overlay flow and metadata, not the original command-and-control content.
Yggdrasil’s project documentation says that all traffic on the network is encrypted end to end and “cannot be decrypted or read by any intermediate nodes.” Its implementation documentation explains that even plain-text application traffic is encrypted with the destination node’s public key. The recipient is therefore the point at which the application bytes become readable again.

This does not make malware invisible everywhere. The host still has to run a program, open or write files, create processes, make network connections, and often establish persistence. Those operations are observable by endpoint security, subject to the product’s capabilities and configuration. The documentation and incident report establish the inspection boundary; they do not prove that every antivirus product will identify every Yggdrasil-based backdoor.
Why does Yggdrasil encryption defeat transit payload inspection?
Yggdrasil is a public, untrusted overlay network. A packet can be forwarded by intermediate nodes, but those nodes are not given the destination’s application plaintext. A network antivirus appliance placed on that forwarding path can classify the overlay connection, record addresses and timing, and apply policy, yet it cannot scan the hidden HTTP or shell-command content as ordinary network payload.

The distinction is important because “encrypted” describes the transport path, not the safety of the endpoint. Once the destination host receives and decrypts traffic, any command accepted by a malicious client can affect that host. A sensor on the host, or an endpoint agent with process and file visibility, has a substantially different evidence set from a sensor watching only transit links.
HTTPS can add another layer of encryption. In the documented MythicRatatoskr case, the backdoor used JSON-encoded HTTP POST requests and HTTPS on port 443 through Yggdrasil. Seeing port 443 or an encrypted HTTPS flow does not reveal the request body to an intermediate Yggdrasil observer. Inspection would require visibility at the endpoint or a deliberately configured decryption point that actually terminates the relevant session.
What did the MythicRatatoskr case show?
ESET reported MythicRatatoskr on 22 October 2026 as a previously undocumented Go backdoor. Its command-and-control server was hosted inside the Yggdrasil mesh, and the malware used Yggdrasil as its communications layer after the victim was compromised.

How the backdoor communicated
The implant checked in with victim metadata, polled for tasks, accepted shell and file commands, and could exfiltrate files and screenshots. Its application traffic consisted of JSON-encoded HTTP POST requests and HTTPS on port 443 routed through Yggdrasil. A network tool positioned only on the transit path could not read those commands as ordinary HTTP content.
How the intrusion began
ESET said the campaign began with spearphishing access in July 2025. The report later described destructive activity attributed to a Sandworm handoff assessment. Yggdrasil was the communications layer used after initial access; the report does not say that Yggdrasil itself caused the compromise.
What mitigation ESET identified
ESET stated that, although the command-and-control server was inside Yggdrasil and this could prevent network security tools from detecting outbound connections to it, blocking the server’s public peer addresses was a viable mitigation. That is a network-control recommendation for the documented campaign, not proof that every malicious Yggdrasil peer can be identified in advance.
Which security controls can detect or disrupt Yggdrasil-based malware?
The most useful way to compare controls is by inspection point, visibility, and action. No single layer replaces the others.
| Control | Inspection point | What it can observe | Typical response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Endpoint antivirus or EDR | The host where Yggdrasil terminates and malware executes | Backdoor files, services, processes, persistence, and behavior | Quarantine files, stop processes, isolate the host, and investigate activity |
| Transit network antivirus or IDS | An intermediate link or forwarding node | Connection metadata and peer addresses; not the end-to-end application payload | Alert on policy violations or unusual connections and feed block rules |
| IPv6-capable host or network firewall | The host boundary or network edge | Unexpected inbound reachability and permitted or denied flows | Block unsolicited inbound traffic and restrict allowed services |
| Public-peer address blocking | Firewall, router, or endpoint egress policy | Connections to listed public Yggdrasil peer addresses | Deny traffic to addresses associated with the documented command-and-control infrastructure |
Yggdrasil explicitly recommends an IPv6-capable firewall that blocks unexpected incoming traffic, because services could otherwise be exposed to all users of the public network. This is an exposure-reduction measure, not a payload scanner. Peer blocking can interrupt a known route, but it depends on accurate, current addresses and may affect legitimate Yggdrasil use.

How should an organization protect a host that runs Yggdrasil?
Use layered controls, beginning at the host that terminates the overlay connection. The following sequence separates prevention from investigation.
- Inventory every installation. Identify which servers, workstations, containers, and virtual machines run Yggdrasil, which accounts start it, and which services are reachable through the overlay. An unknown installation cannot be placed under a meaningful policy.
- Enable endpoint inspection. Keep antivirus or EDR active on those hosts and verify that it can inspect new files, process launches, services, persistence locations, and command-line activity. The goal is to observe the backdoor where it executes rather than expecting a transit appliance to decrypt it.
- Apply the recommended firewall posture. Configure an IPv6-capable host or network firewall to block unexpected incoming traffic. Open only the services that have a documented business purpose, and review exceptions whenever a new Yggdrasil peer or service is added.
- Control public peers. If your threat intelligence identifies public Yggdrasil peer addresses associated with malicious infrastructure, add them to an egress or host block list. Record the source and expiry of each rule so stale blocks do not accumulate unnoticed.
- Correlate endpoint and network events. Review which process created a Yggdrasil connection, when it started, what files it touched, and whether it spawned a shell or attempted file transfer. A connection that looks opaque on the wire may be clearly attributable to an unauthorized process on the host.
- Contain before deleting evidence. If a backdoor is suspected, isolate the host according to your incident-response procedure, preserve relevant process, file, and firewall records, and then remove or reimage the system as your investigation requires. Blocking a peer can stop communication, but it does not remove the implant.
Can a firewall block Yggdrasil command and control?
Yes, a firewall can reduce the available paths, and blocking known public peer addresses can mitigate the documented MythicRatatoskr campaign. An IPv6 firewall that denies unexpected inbound traffic also prevents accidental exposure of local services to the public Yggdrasil network.
Firewalling has limits. A rule based on a public address is only as effective as the address list, and blocking an address can also disrupt legitimate overlay connections. A firewall cannot determine whether encrypted application content is malicious when it has no decryption point. Treat peer blocking as a targeted containment or prevention rule, while endpoint controls determine whether a malicious program is present.
Will endpoint protection catch a Yggdrasil backdoor?
Endpoint protection is the most appropriate inspection location, but “will catch” is too strong a promise without naming a product, version, configuration, and sample. ESET’s case documents host-resident artifacts and behavior that an endpoint tool could potentially inspect, including a Go backdoor, command execution, file operations, screenshots, and persistence-related activity. The cited material does not validate a particular vendor signature, detection rule, or detection rate.
Detection may occur through a known file signature, a suspicious process or service, abnormal child-process behavior, unauthorized persistence, or a combination of events. A new or customized backdoor may not have a signature immediately, so behavior monitoring and timely updates matter. A clean transit inspection result should never be treated as evidence that the endpoint is clean.

What network evidence remains useful if the payload is encrypted?
Encryption removes application content from the intermediate observer, but it does not erase all telemetry. Security teams can still use peer addresses, connection times, direction, frequency, and policy decisions to identify an unexpected relationship. Those signals can support an alert or a block rule, but they do not by themselves prove that a connection carries malware.
Process-to-connection correlation on the endpoint is more informative than a transit-only view. If an unapproved binary creates the Yggdrasil session, repeatedly polls a peer, or launches shell and file-transfer activity, the host evidence supplies context that encrypted network metadata lacks. Keep the two views together so a network block does not become the only record of what happened.
How can investigators examine a suspected Yggdrasil compromise?
- Confirm the host and time window. Establish when Yggdrasil was installed or started and identify the peers contacted during the suspected period.
- Find the initiating process. Use endpoint telemetry to map each relevant connection to its executable, account, parent process, and launch time. Pay particular attention to newly written or unsigned binaries and unexpected services.
- Review command and file activity. Look for shell commands, file reads or writes, screenshot capture, and outbound transfer behavior consistent with the capabilities ESET described for MythicRatatoskr.
- Preserve records before remediation. Export endpoint alerts, process trees, file hashes, service definitions, and firewall decisions while the evidence is available. Avoid relying on a later memory of which peer was blocked.
- Contain both ends of the path. Isolate the host and block confirmed malicious public peer addresses. Then determine whether credentials, files, or other systems were affected through the backdoor’s command and file capabilities.
These steps distinguish a communications symptom from the underlying compromise. A blocked peer or failed check-in is a containment result, not a finding that the malware has been removed.
Is there a published antivirus detection rate for Yggdrasil traffic?
No authoritative detection-rate, false-positive-rate, prevalence, or sample-size statistic is provided for antivirus inspection of Yggdrasil traffic in the cited material. Results would also depend on whether the product runs on an endpoint or in transit, the malware sample, policy settings, and the date of the signatures. Use measured results from your own controlled evaluation or the specific vendor’s documentation rather than assigning a universal percentage.
What is the practical answer for defenders?
Assume that a transit antivirus appliance cannot read malware payloads carried inside Yggdrasil’s end-to-end encryption. Use it for metadata-based policy and alerting, pair it with an IPv6 firewall that denies unexpected inbound traffic, and maintain targeted blocks for confirmed public peers. Put the strongest detection and response capability on the endpoints where Yggdrasil terminates and the backdoor executes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Yggdrasil encryption protect the malware itself?
No. It protects the traffic while it crosses intermediate nodes. Once the destination host decrypts and accepts the traffic, the malware can still execute commands and access local resources, so host security remains necessary.
Is blocking all Yggdrasil traffic the only safe option?
Not necessarily. Organizations that need the overlay can restrict inbound reachability, permit only approved services, and block confirmed malicious public peers. A blanket deny may be appropriate for systems with no business need, but it can also interrupt legitimate overlay use.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchCan HTTPS inspection reveal a Yggdrasil command channel?
Only a device that legitimately terminates the relevant encrypted session can inspect its application content. A sensor forwarding Yggdrasil traffic sees neither the inner HTTP requests nor the HTTPS plaintext, even when the connection uses the familiar port 443.
What should defenders document when blocking a public peer?
Record the peer address, the reason for the block, the data source, the time applied, and an owner or review date. This preserves the decision’s context and makes it possible to remove a stale rule without losing the incident history.
Does a failed Yggdrasil check-in prove the backdoor is gone?
No. A firewall block or unavailable peer only shows that one communication path failed. The implant may remain on the host, try another peer, or perform actions locally, so endpoint investigation and remediation are still required.
