Short answer: Anbernic handhelds cannot run Nintendo Switch or 3DS games natively. They have no Nintendo operating system, eShop access, or slot for Nintendo game cards. Some Android-based Anbernic models can attempt 3DS emulation, with the upcoming dual-screen RG DDS designed around 3DS-like screen proportions, but compatibility remains unverified and the Azahar project announced that it will not officially support Anbernic devices. Switch emulation is even less certain: community forks can boot selected games on faster Android models, yet there is no complete compatibility catalogue and the software is legally contested. For licensed Switch play, use Nintendo hardware; for retro systems through PS1, Anbernic’s Linux range is the better fit.
What is an Anbernic handheld, exactly?
Anbernic is a Shenzhen manufacturer (identified by Time Extension as Shenzhen YangLiMing Electronic Technology Co., Ltd., operating since 2017) that sells RG-branded emulation consoles. These devices are Android or Linux computers with gamepad controls; they are not Nintendo products and are not licensed replacements for a Switch or 3DS.

The distinction matters because an emulator is software running on general-purpose hardware. It does not give the handheld Nintendo’s cartridge interface, secure boot chain, account services, or permission to download games from Nintendo’s stores. Pocket Retro Gamer’s catalogue FAQ puts the ownership model plainly: “No licensed games are included. The device is the hardware and the emulation software; game files are something you supply yourself, legally from games you own.”
Linux XX models
The RG35XX family, RG34XX, RG28XX, RG40XX, RG CubeXX and other “XX” models use Allwinner’s H700 platform and Linux firmware. GarlicOS and muOS are popular community firmware choices. Their practical range is Game Boy through PlayStation 1; Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast support varies by game. These are the wrong machines for Switch and for useful 3DS emulation, and the Linux RG DS Plus is likewise a DS-focused device rather than a 3DS computer.

Android models
Android models such as the RG556, RG406 series, RG476H, RG Cube, RG Slide and RG557 have substantially more processing headroom. They are the Anbernic line used for heavier emulators, with the RG556 commonly described as the catalogue entry point for GameCube and PlayStation 2. That extra performance makes experimental 3DS or Switch emulation possible on selected titles; it does not turn the products into Nintendo consoles.
How Anbernic model numbers help
- RG identifies the product line; the digits roughly indicate screen size (for example, RG28XX has a 2.8-inch display and RG35XX a 3.5-inch display).
- XX generally means the budget Linux range.
- H means a horizontal body, V a vertical body, SP a clamshell, and M a metal shell.
- Cube indicates a near-square display; DS means two screens; VITA denotes a wide Android layout.
Can an Anbernic play Switch games natively?
No. No Anbernic model contains Switch hardware, Nintendo’s operating system, or a licensed game-card reader. A shell that resembles a Switch Lite does not change that: the RG 55G1 is an Android 14 handheld with a Snapdragon G1 Gen 2, not a Switch.

Digital Trends listed it from $150 with a three-day $10 launch discount; Android Authority reported a $139.99 promotion and a $149.99 standard price on 28 October 2026. Its measured purpose in those reports is Android retro emulation: comfortable PSP play, with only some GameCube and PlayStation 2 titles playable. It is not a native Switch device.
Fun-Esports’ 39-console comparison, checked on 29 October 2026, defines its “Switch / PC” tier as Windows handhelds running native modern games. No Anbernic SKU appears in that tier. Anbernic Android models are placed in lower retro categories, where Dreamcast, PSP, GameCube or PS2 capability depends on the model and the individual game.
Can Android Anbernic models emulate Switch games?
They can attempt it with unofficial emulator forks, but this is an experiment rather than a supported Switch catalogue. Community setup videos have targeted T820-based models including the RG406V, RG406H, RG476H and RG556 with Citron or modified Suyu builds.
One Palacio Gamer video published 3 November 2025 showed Super Mario Bros. Wonder at approximately 39 frames per second in Citron and 45 frames per second in Suyu on an RG476H. Those numbers are a single creator’s session, not a repeatable benchmark or a promise for every game, firmware version or unit. The same video reported that Citron booted some titles, such as Silksong and Hades, that did not boot in the tested Suyu build. No independent source has published a full-library Switch compatibility percentage for any Anbernic model as of 29 October 2026.

Retail guides therefore do not call these machines “Switch handhelds.” Digital Trends describes the RG 55G1 as designed for retro emulation rather than modern console releases, while Pocket Retro Gamer discusses Android Anbernics in the context of GameCube and PS2. A tutorial that gets one game running should be read as a compatibility anecdote, not as evidence that an Anbernic replaces a Switch.
Why is Switch emulation legally sensitive?
Nintendo of America sued Tropic Haze, the company behind Yuzu, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island. The 4 March 2024 proposed final judgment required USD $2,400,000 in payment and permanently barred distribution of Yuzu and other circumvention devices. The court’s findings state that Yuzu was primarily designed to circumvent and play Switch games, including through unauthorized Nintendo cryptographic keys. Citra, the related 3DS emulator project, shut down in the same settlement wave.
Forks such as Citron and Suyu are not Nintendo-licensed products and are not Anbernic-supported catalogue features. Emulators themselves can be lawful software, but distributing or using unauthorized copies of Nintendo games, keys or circumvention tools can create separate copyright and DMCA issues. This article does not provide ROM, key or download sources.
The industry dispute is still active. In October 2026 the Entertainment Software Association asked U.S. trade officials to classify preloaded emulation handhelds as “superfakes” on the Notorious Markets list, arguing that devices sold with large unauthorized game collections remove the friction that once separated consumers from piracy. That request was not a final U.S. government listing in the available reporting, but it shows why preloaded-card claims deserve caution.
Can an Anbernic run 3DS games?
Sometimes, on selected Android hardware; not on Linux XX models and not from a 3DS cartridge. 3DS emulation requires enough CPU/GPU power and a sensible way to display the system’s two screens. Single-screen Android handhelds can stack or resize the screens, but touch controls and the different upper/lower aspect ratios are compromises.
Azahar is the open-source continuation of the Citra lineage for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. Its project description says it is intended to let 3DS owners use their libraries with higher resolutions, modern controllers and save states, and it states that Azahar is not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo. The Android build is why faster Anbernic models enter the 3DS conversation at all.

Community Android folder conventions commonly reserve a 3ds directory with .3ds and .cia extensions, alongside an nds directory for Nintendo DS. The absence of a Switch folder in those packs reflects the practical distinction: 3DS is treated as an Android-emulation target, while Switch is not a normal Anbernic system class.
Why the RG DS Plus is not a 3DS solution
The RG DS Plus is a budget Linux dual-screen machine, not the high-powered Android clamshell many buyers imagine. Android Authority lists a $94.99 MSRP, a Rockchip RK3568, 1GB of RAM (down from 3GB in the original RG DS), no onboard storage, one analog stick, a 4,000mAh battery and two 1,024×768 displays. It is strong for Nintendo DS through NNDDSS and DraStic in RetroArch. Android Authority’s Hadlee Simons states the limitation directly: “And you can absolutely forget about Nintendo 3DS emulation.”

Anbernic’s promotional material claims triple the original 3DS panel resolution and up to five-times scaling on selected 3DS titles. Those are manufacturer claims. Shattered.io reported that coverage of the 15 October 2026 reveal had no verified system-by-system compatibility list and that no independent reviewer had confirmed retail-unit performance. Promotional footage has shown commercial 3DS games, including Pokémon Omega Ruby, but video footage is not a compatibility guarantee. The official listing text retrieved for the product does not use the words Nintendo, Switch or 3DS; its 3DS relevance comes from the geometry, stylus and demonstrations.
What happened to official 3DS-emulator support on Anbernic?
In October 2026, Azahar developers announced that they would not officially support Anbernic devices after Anbernic promoted the RG DDS with unofficial, piracy-focused forks. The decision applies across the brand, not only to the DDS. The announcement says bugs on Anbernic hardware will not be investigated or resolved and recommends another device for guaranteed official support; the statement is reproduced in reporting and linked to the developers’ post on Azahar’s official account.
“Azahar Plus” shown in promotional contexts should therefore be treated as an unofficial fork, not the supported Azahar release. An Anbernic Android handheld may still run community software, but buyers should expect to troubleshoot it without help from the upstream project.

How should you choose an Anbernic for Nintendo games?
Start with the software you actually want to play, then match the hardware rather than the shell design.
- If you want Switch games as Nintendo ships them: buy a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2. Anbernic cannot read Switch cards, sign into Nintendo’s ecosystem or run the native operating system.
- If you want original 3DS cartridges: use a Nintendo 3DS-family system. Production and the 3DS eShop have ended, so used hardware is the licensed physical-cartridge route.
- If you want DS games on two screens: the RG DS Plus is designed for DS, not 3DS. Check that its Linux software and 1GB memory meet your expectations.
- If you want to experiment with 3DS emulation: choose a faster Android model, understand that single-screen layouts are compromises, and regard the RG DDS as an unverified pre-order proposition until independent retail testing appears.
- If you want classic systems through PS1: an inexpensive Linux XX model is the sensible lane. Move to Android only when you need heavier Dreamcast, GameCube or PS2 emulation.
What should you check before buying?
- Confirm the operating system: Linux XX models are not suitable for 3DS; Android is a prerequisite for Android 3DS emulators.
- Check RAM, storage and firmware support for the exact model, not just the family name.
- Ignore “10,000 games included” claims unless you can verify lawful ownership and provenance. Preloaded unauthorized collections are the concern raised by the ESA and may expose buyers to takedowns or other legal problems.
- For the RG DDS, wait for independent retail-unit 3DS testing; no such benchmark was published by 29 October 2026.
- Keep expectations title-specific. Emulator performance depends on the game, renderer, firmware, thermal limits and controller mapping.
What is the practical verdict?
Anbernic is a retro-emulation brand, not a Nintendo Switch or 3DS clone. Linux XX models stop around the classic-console era; Android models can explore heavier systems and, on selected titles, unofficial 3DS or Switch emulation. The RG DDS offers the most convincing 3DS-shaped hardware, but its performance was not independently verified before its December 2026 shipping window, and Azahar will not officially support Anbernic devices. Buy Nintendo hardware when the goal is licensed Switch play or physical 3DS cartridges; buy Anbernic when the goal is flexible retro emulation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put a Switch cartridge or 3DS cartridge into an Anbernic?
No. Anbernic slots, where present, are for microSD storage and do not implement Nintendo’s game-card protocol. A cartridge-shaped opening or a 3DS-style shell does not provide the electrical, cryptographic or software support required by Nintendo media.
Does the RG DDS come with Nintendo games?
The product is sold as Android hardware with emulation software, not as a Nintendo-licensed bundle. Promotional videos are not proof that commercial games are included, and any game files must come from lawful sources you control.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can an external monitor give a single-screen Anbernic a real 3DS layout?
A 2025 firmware update documented by Pocket Tactics added USB-C external-display dual-screen support on T820 models such as the RG Slide, RG556, RG406H, RG406V and RG Cube. That setup uses a second monitor; it is not a hinged, pocketable 3DS replacement and still depends on emulator software and touch-control mapping.
Is a used 3DS still useful if the eShop has closed?
Yes for physical cartridges and locally stored software you already own. The end of production and eShop sales affects availability, so condition, battery health, hinge wear and the legitimacy of included software matter when evaluating a used unit.

Why do online videos show different results on the same Anbernic model?
Android firmware, emulator fork, graphics driver, cooling, game version and per-title settings can all change the outcome. A video showing one boot or frame-rate reading should be treated as a report for that configuration, not a guarantee for every unit.
