Yes—an AI video generator can redesign parts of footage you already have by following a text prompt. Current vendor documentation describes replacing backgrounds, changing lighting, removing or adding objects, and applying a new visual style. The practical process is prompt-driven rather than click-by-click masking: upload a clip, describe the change, inspect a preview, refine the instruction, and generate a revised shot or sequence.

“Without manual editing” does not mean “without review.” You still need to check faces, edges, motion, continuity, and unwanted changes, and some tools impose limits on duration, resolution, prompt language, or plan access.

What does AI scene redesign actually change?

AI scene redesign modifies selected visual elements in existing footage instead of requiring you to rebuild every layer by hand. You provide a source video and a natural-language instruction; the model synthesizes replacement frames while attempting to retain the subject and action you did not ask it to change.

Runway describes editing uploaded video or an existing AI clip, while Adobe documents prompt edits to both uploaded and generated video. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not independent tests, so treat preservation of every unmentioned detail as a goal to verify rather than a guarantee.

Backgrounds and environments

A prompt can request a new setting, such as changing an indoor room to a rain-soaked street or replacing a plain backdrop with a studio environment. Background swaps are specifically listed in Runway’s AI video generator documentation and Adobe’s text-prompt editing workflow (Runway AI Video Generator; Adobe Firefly help).

Lighting and color

Relighting a scene, shifting its time-of-day appearance, or recoloring a visible element are documented use cases. Runway lists relighting; Adobe gives recoloring flowers as an example. Describe the intended direction, softness, and color relationship to the subject so the result can be judged against the original shot.

Objects and scene details

You can ask to remove an object, add a new one, or replace an existing element. Typical instructions identify the object, its location, and the desired interaction with the scene. If a hand, shadow, reflection, or prop matters to the story, call it out explicitly and inspect those areas frame by frame after generation.

Style and overall look

Runway Research describes Aleph as an in-context video model that can add, remove, or transform objects and modify style and lighting in its July 25, 2025 announcement (Runway Research: Introducing Runway Aleph). A style instruction can alter the visual treatment of the whole shot, so specify what should remain unchanged—such as the actor, camera movement, or composition—when those elements are important.

How do I redesign a scene with a prompt?

The reliable workflow is iterative: prepare a clean source, state one clear change, preview it, refine the wording, and then review the generated video in context.

  1. Choose the source clip. Use the original footage or an existing AI-generated clip that contains the subject and movement you want to keep. Note the clip’s frame size, duration, and whether it contains multiple shots separated by cuts.
  2. Describe the edit in plain language. Name the element to change and the intended result: “Replace the office background with a snowy mountain overlook while keeping the person, camera framing, and walking motion unchanged.” Avoid combining unrelated transformations in the first instruction.
  3. Preview a reference frame. Runway’s documented Edit Studio flow shows an image preview before generation, allowing you to inspect the proposed direction and refine it. Adobe’s workflow likewise starts with a prompt and generation, with frame-level image-editing options available in its documented interface.
  4. Refine what must stay fixed. Add constraints for identity, clothing, camera position, subject movement, or color palette. If the system changes an important detail, state that detail explicitly in the next prompt rather than assuming it will be preserved.
  5. Generate the revised footage. Render the edit at the available duration and resolution. For a multi-shot source, verify whether the chosen workflow applies the instruction across cuts or treats each shot independently.
  6. Review at full speed and frame by frame. Look for flickering edges, altered faces, drifting logos, broken object interactions, inconsistent shadows, and changes outside the requested area. Keep the original clip so you can compare every revision.
  7. Finish in a conventional timeline. Trim the result, align it with dialogue and sound, add transitions, and keep an unaltered version available for rollback. AI generation replaces visual frames; it does not remove the need for editorial decisions.

Can one prompt update every shot in a sequence?

Sometimes. Runway states that Edit Studio’s Aleph 2.0 applies an edit across every shot in a multi-shot sequence, including across cuts, up to 30 seconds at 1080p. That statement is a product claim from Runway’s AI video editor page, not an independent quality assessment (Runway AI Video Editor).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This sequence-wide behavior matters when a subject moves through several angles or locations. A single instruction can express the creative change, but you still need to check each cut: a replacement that looks correct in one angle may produce a different scale, lighting direction, or occlusion in another. If the source exceeds the stated 30-second, 1080p limit, divide it at editorially sensible boundaries, process each segment, and match the results before reassembling the sequence.

Which AI video tools support existing-footage redesign?

The products documented for this topic differ more in workflow and constraints than in independently proven output quality. The table below lists only capabilities and limits stated in their official pages.

Tool or workflow Existing footage Documented edit or generation behavior Stated constraints or notes
Runway AI Video Generator Yes; upload real video or use an existing AI clip Prompt-based backdrop swaps, relighting, and adding or removing objects; also supports starting from a prompt, image, or clip Feature descriptions are vendor claims; current access and plan details can change (official page)
Runway Edit Studio / Aleph 2.0 Yes Preview a reference frame, refine the instruction, and apply an edit across a multi-shot sequence, including cuts Runway states up to 30 seconds at 1080p; Edit Studio and Aleph 2.0 are described as available on paid plans (official page)
Adobe Firefly video editing Yes; uploaded or generated video Text prompts can remove elements, add new ones, change backgrounds, and recolor details; frame-level image editing is also documented The help page, updated August 20, 2026, lists Firefly Video 2 (Preview), Kling 3.0 Omni, Runway Gen-4 Aleph, Ray3.14 Modify, and Ray3 Modify; model availability may change (Adobe help)
Adobe Premiere Generative Media Tool Generates clips for use in a timeline; the cited page does not establish automatic redesign across existing cuts Creates video clips or sound effects and adds them as editable clips for review and refinement Overview updated September 9, 2026; this is timeline generation, distinct from evidence of sequence-wide scene replacement (Adobe overview)
Canva AI video clip Generates a new short clip from text rather than documenting edits to supplied footage Enter a text prompt, generate a clip, then open it in Canva’s Video Editor Canva documents eight-second videos with audio or six-second videos without audio, with English-only prompts; these specifications may change (Canva Help)

How should I choose a workflow?

Start with the operation you need, not the brand name. Use these questions to narrow the choice:

  • Do you need to alter footage you already shot? Eliminate workflows documented only for generating a new clip. Runway and Adobe Firefly explicitly describe edits to uploaded video; Canva’s cited help page describes text-to-clip generation followed by editing.
  • Does the change cross several cuts? Look for explicit sequence-wide behavior. Runway’s stated 30-second-at-1080p Edit Studio limit is the clearest documented example in these sources.
  • Which elements must change? Match the tool to the operation—background, lighting, object removal, object insertion, recoloring, or style—and confirm that the interface exposes the needed control.
  • What constraints are acceptable? Record the maximum duration and resolution, prompt-language requirements, preview steps, and whether access is limited to a paid plan or a particular model.
  • Where will the result be finished? If you need repeated trimming, sound synchronization, and versioning, favor a workflow that returns editable clips to a timeline. Generation and scene redesign are not the same operation.

How do I write prompts that limit unintended changes?

Specific prompts make review easier because you can tell whether the model followed a defined instruction. Use a compact structure:

  1. Action: begin with one verb—replace, remove, add, recolor, relight, or restyle.
  2. Target: identify the exact object or region, including its position if useful.
  3. Replacement: describe the new appearance, material, environment, or light source.
  4. Preservation: list the subject, framing, motion, wardrobe, and other details that should remain.
  5. Continuity: mention direction of movement, time of day, and relationships to nearby objects when those details matter across frames.

For example: “Replace the gray wall behind the presenter with a warm wood library, keep the presenter’s face, clothing, camera framing, and hand gestures unchanged, and match the existing soft key light.” A second prompt can then address a separate issue, such as removing a microphone stand, rather than asking for every transformation at once.

What can go wrong, and how do I recover?

The subject’s identity or clothing drifts

Restate the preservation requirement and use a shorter, more localized edit. Compare the generated frames with the source at the same time points; if identity-critical footage changes, keep the original shot or process a smaller section instead of accepting a broadly altered take.

Edges, hands, or reflections look unstable

These areas often reveal whether the replacement integrates with motion and lighting. Rephrase the prompt to describe the object’s contact, shadow, and reflection, then generate again. If the defect remains, use the AI result only for a cutaway or background plate and retain the original foreground.

A change works in one shot but not another

Check whether the workflow supports sequence-wide editing and whether the source is within its stated limit. For longer or complex sequences, split by shot or by a short run of continuous action, then match color and timing in the timeline.

The result changes details you never mentioned

Do not assume silence means preservation. Add explicit “keep” instructions for important details, reduce the number of simultaneous changes, and compare against the source before approving the render.

The tool or model is unavailable

Model lists, plan access, and interface labels are volatile. Adobe’s August 20, 2026 help page lists several available models, but that availability can change; Runway likewise describes Edit Studio and Aleph 2.0 as paid-plan features. Recheck the current product page and your account’s access before restructuring a production around one model.

How does AI redesign fit into a professional editing process?

Use AI for the expensive visual alteration, then return to ordinary editorial controls for decisions that require exact timing. Keep three versions of important material: the untouched source, the AI-generated candidate, and the approved timeline edit. Name prompts and revisions so another editor can identify which instruction produced a shot.

For continuity-heavy work, process a short representative section first. Check the actor, props, camera movement, color, and sound sync before rendering the rest of the sequence. This catches a bad interpretation early and avoids generating an entire project with the wrong visual assumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not present vendor feature descriptions as a neutral ranking. The cited sources do not provide head-to-head tests, independent quality scores, or evidence that an edit will preserve every unmentioned scene detail. Evaluate a candidate on your own footage, under the delivery resolution and timing you actually need.

What are the access, rights, and cost considerations?

The supplied product pages establish some access restrictions but do not provide a dependable, current price comparison. Runway says Edit Studio and Aleph 2.0 are available on paid plans; Adobe’s documented model list can change; Canva publishes clip-length and language specifications rather than a universal cost for every account. Check the live plan page and workspace settings before budgeting.

Commercial usage rights, model-specific licenses, training-data policies, and consent requirements are not established by the cited feature descriptions. Confirm those terms for your account and source footage, especially when people, logos, music, or client-owned material appear in the clip. Keep records of the original asset, the prompt, the model, and the export you approved.

What is the practical bottom line?

AI video generators can redesign existing scenes through prompts, and some workflows can propagate a requested change across multiple cuts. The most dependable approach is controlled iteration: choose an existing-footage workflow, make one precise change, preview and refine it, respect duration and resolution limits, and inspect the result before it enters the final timeline. Treat the generated video as an editable candidate—not an automatic replacement for editorial review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use AI-redesigned footage in a commercial project?

The feature pages describe how to generate or modify video but do not establish universal commercial rights. Check the terms for the specific account, model, and source assets, and obtain any required permissions for people, logos, music, or client footage before publishing.

What should I do when my sequence is longer than a tool’s limit?

Cut the project at natural editorial boundaries, process each segment with matching prompts and settings, and reassemble the approved results in your timeline. Compare the join between segments for changes in lighting, scale, color, or motion before delivery.

Why did the generator alter details I did not ask it to change?

Generative editing rebuilds frames, so an unstated detail is not necessarily locked. Add explicit preservation instructions, reduce the edit to one target, and compare a short test section with the original before rendering a longer sequence.

Should I keep the original footage after generating a redesign?

Yes. Preserve the untouched source alongside each generated candidate and the final timeline version. This gives you a rollback option, supports client approvals, and makes it possible to verify which visual changes came from the prompt.
