Yes. An AI PC can run PC games without a dedicated graphics card by using the integrated graphics processor (iGPU) built into its main processor. Whether the experience is good depends on the exact iGPU, the laptop or desktop’s cooling and power limits, memory configuration, drivers, display resolution, and the game’s settings. “AI PC” and “Copilot+ PC” labels describe neural-processing and software capabilities, not a guaranteed level of gaming performance. For a buying decision, compare the named integrated GPU and the conditions of any benchmark rather than relying on the AI label alone.
What does “AI PC” mean for gaming?
An AI PC is a computer designed with a neural processing unit (NPU) in addition to its ordinary CPU and graphics hardware. The NPU accelerates selected local AI functions, while the CPU and GPU still handle conventional applications and games. Microsoft identifies 40+ tera operations per second (TOPS) of NPU capability as a requirement for many Copilot+ PC AI features; that figure measures AI-processing capacity, not frame rate or graphics quality.

The AI designation tells you about supported AI workloads. The integrated GPU model, its memory access, and the computer’s sustained power and cooling tell you much more about games.
Can integrated graphics run PC games?
Yes. Integrated graphics share the processor package and use system memory instead of a separate graphics card, but they can still render 3D scenes. Many games will start and play on an iGPU when the system meets the game’s CPU, memory, graphics API, and driver requirements.

The trade-off is that an iGPU normally has less dedicated graphics bandwidth and less sustained power than a desktop or laptop with a discrete GPU. That makes the choice of resolution and graphics preset important. Microsoft describes the basic compromise this way: increasing resolution or graphics settings improves visual quality but can reduce frame rate, while lowering them improves frame rate at the cost of image quality.
What an iGPU can and cannot promise
- It can run games designed for integrated graphics and many mainstream titles at reduced settings.
- It may struggle with modern, graphically intensive games at high resolution or high presets.
- Performance can differ substantially between two computers with the same processor because manufacturers set different power limits, cooling systems, memory configurations, drivers, and performance modes.
- A benchmark result for one laptop is not a guaranteed result for every laptop using the same processor.
Which hardware matters more than the AI branding?
Start with the exact integrated GPU name. “AI PC” is too broad to identify gaming capability. A specification such as Radeon 890M graphics identifies the graphics architecture being used; a generic NPU or Copilot+ label does not.
Then check the rest of the platform. The following factors can change the result even when the processor model is identical:
- Memory configuration: Integrated graphics use system memory, so configured capacity and memory bandwidth matter. Look for the actual memory arrangement and speed listed for the specific computer.
- Sustained power and cooling: A thin laptop may reduce power after a few minutes to control heat, while a larger chassis may sustain a higher performance level.
- Power profile: Windows modes such as Best Performance can produce different results from balanced or battery-saving modes.
- Drivers: Graphics-driver versions affect game compatibility and performance.
- Power source: Battery operation can impose limits that do not apply when the computer is plugged in.
- Display and target resolution: Rendering at 1080p is substantially different from rendering at a higher native resolution.
- Game engine and settings: Two games at the same resolution can place very different demands on the GPU.
What do published AI-PC gaming benchmarks actually show?
Published results demonstrate that modern integrated graphics can be competitive in the right class of hardware, but the conditions must travel with every number. AMD’s figures below are vendor testing, not an independent universal ranking.
| Comparison | Test conditions | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 with Radeon 890M versus Intel Core Ultra 9 285H with Arc 140T | AMD comparison published in 2025; 27 game titles at 1080p, Low settings | Ryzen system averaged 17% faster gaming across the 27 titles | This is an AMD vendor comparison under the stated settings. It is not a promise for every game or every laptop using either processor. |
| Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 laptop versus Intel Core Ultra 9 386H laptop | AMD test conducted in March 2026; 1080p, Low settings, Best Performance mode, 32 GB memory; named laptop models were used | Overall result and game count: not stated in the available description | AMD notes that manufacturers’ configurations can vary, so the named laptop and its setup are part of the result. |
The first comparison makes Radeon 890M a useful example of an iGPU worth investigating when shopping for an AI PC. It does not establish a minimum frame rate, a universal “high settings” result, or performance on a game that was not tested. The second comparison reinforces why a processor name alone is insufficient: the laptop model, memory, operating mode, and cooling all form part of the test setup.
What settings should you use when gaming on an AI PC?
Use the game’s built-in benchmark, if available, and tune one variable at a time. Begin with a target resolution and frame rate that the hardware can sustain, then add visual quality only when frame pacing remains acceptable.
A practical tuning order
- Plug in the computer. Select the manufacturer’s or Windows performance mode intended for sustained performance. Record the mode so later comparisons are fair.
- Update the graphics driver. Use the current driver supplied for the exact processor and computer model, then restart before testing.
- Choose a sensible resolution. Test 1080p if the display and game support it; if performance is poor, reduce the render resolution or use a supported upscaling option.
- Set a Low or Medium preset. Apply the preset, run the same scene or benchmark, and note frame-rate consistency rather than only the highest number.
- Reduce expensive effects first. Shadows, reflections, volumetric effects, ambient occlusion, and view distance often have a larger GPU cost than simpler texture adjustments.
- Cap the frame rate if needed. A stable cap can make play feel smoother than an uncapped rate that repeatedly falls and spikes.
- Test for sustained behavior. Play long enough to expose heat-related throttling. A result after a short loading screen may not represent a 30-minute session.
Keep a record of resolution, preset, upscaling, power mode, driver version, and whether the system was on AC power. Without those details, comparing two numbers can be misleading.

Can Automatic Super Resolution make an integrated GPU faster?
Microsoft’s Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) can render a supported game at a lower internal resolution and upscale the image, potentially improving the balance between image quality and frame rate. It is not a universal performance switch: it works only with a curated set of games and compatible hardware and software.
Auto SR requirements and limits
- A supported device and current graphics and neural-processor drivers.
- Windows 11 version 24H2 or later.
- A display with 1080p or higher resolution.
- A DirectX 10 or later game running natively on x64, x64 emulation, or Arm64.
- A game included in Microsoft’s supported compatibility set.
- Graphics formats and runtimes such as DirectX 9, Vulkan, and OpenGL are listed as unsupported for the feature.
Microsoft also provides ideal input-resolution ranges by device class. Those ranges and the supported-game list can change, so check the current Auto SR support page for the exact computer, driver, Windows build, and game before treating it as an option. If a game is not supported, use its own resolution-scaling or upscaling controls instead, when available.
Which games are a good fit for an AI PC without a dedicated GPU?
The safest choices are games with adjustable presets, scalable resolution, and modest graphics requirements. Competitive games, strategy titles, simulations, independent games, and older releases often provide more flexibility than visually intensive new releases. That is a category guideline, not a guarantee for a particular title.
Recommended Free Tools
For a demanding game, check its stated minimum and recommended graphics hardware, then compare that requirement with the exact iGPU in the computer. “Runs” can mean anything from launching successfully to maintaining a comfortable, consistent frame rate; the developer’s minimum specification rarely defines the experience you want.
When an integrated GPU is a poor fit
- You require high or ultra settings at the display’s native high resolution.
- You need a particular frame rate for a competitive title and cannot accept resolution scaling.
- The laptop has a low-power design, limited cooling, or a memory configuration that does not disclose bandwidth.
- The game depends on a graphics API or feature that the driver does not support.
How should you compare two AI PCs before buying?
Compare like with like and treat every benchmark as a description of a configuration, not a universal score. Use this checklist:
- Write down the exact processor and integrated GPU models.
- Confirm the computer’s installed memory configuration and any disclosed memory bandwidth.
- Identify the chassis, cooling design, sustained power setting, and charger requirement.
- Check whether the published test used the same game, resolution, preset, upscaling, and operating mode you plan to use.
- Separate battery results from plugged-in results.
- Check the graphics-driver version and Windows version, especially if you plan to use Auto SR.
- Read the return policy in case the exact configuration does not meet your games’ needs.
A laptop configured with Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and Radeon 890M is a concrete example of the kind of specification to investigate. Do not assume every laptop built around that processor performs identically: verify its memory, cooling, power profile, display, and the conditions of any test attached to the listing.

Low frame rate immediately
- Confirm that the game is using the integrated GPU and not a power-saving display mode.
- Lower resolution and the graphics preset, then retest the same scene.
- Close background workloads, particularly AI or video tasks that may be using shared memory or graphics resources.
- Check for a current graphics driver and restart after installation.
Performance falls after several minutes
- Switch to the documented performance mode and use AC power.
- Check ventilation and surface temperature; a blocked intake can force lower clocks.
- Compare a short benchmark with a longer session to identify thermal or power throttling.
- Do not treat a brief launch-time result as sustained performance.
The game will not start or displays rendering errors
- Verify the game’s required graphics API and driver support.
- Install the game’s updates and the computer manufacturer’s current graphics driver.
- Disable an upscaling feature temporarily to determine whether compatibility is the cause.
- For Auto SR specifically, verify Windows 11 24H2 or later, the required drivers, a 1080p-or-higher display, and a supported DirectX 10-or-later game. DirectX 9, Vulkan, and OpenGL titles are outside the listed Auto SR support.
Is an AI PC without a dedicated GPU worth buying for gaming?
It can be worthwhile when you value a thin, efficient computer, local AI features, and games that scale well to integrated graphics. The purchase makes less sense if gaming is the primary goal and you expect high-resolution, high-preset performance in demanding releases; in that case, a system with a dedicated GPU is the more predictable class of hardware.
Make the decision from the games you actually play. Select the exact iGPU first, validate comparable tests at your target resolution and settings, and confirm the laptop’s memory, cooling, power mode, drivers, and return terms. The AI badge can be a useful feature indicator, but it should not be used as a substitute for a graphics specification.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does adding more system RAM make integrated-graphics gaming faster?
It can help when a game is constrained by available memory, but capacity alone does not determine the result. Because an iGPU shares system memory, the computer’s configured memory arrangement and bandwidth are important; compare those details between complete laptop models rather than assuming two systems with the same processor are equivalent.
Can I play games on an AI PC while it is unplugged?
Usually yes, but battery profiles commonly reduce power to extend runtime, so performance may differ from plugged-in play. For a meaningful comparison, test and record whether the computer is on battery or AC power and which Windows or manufacturer power mode is active.
Is 1080p the best target resolution for integrated graphics?
It is a common test resolution and a practical starting point, not a universal rule. If the display is higher resolution or the game is demanding, lowering the internal render resolution or using a supported scaler may provide a better balance than insisting on native output.
How can I verify which integrated GPU a laptop actually has?
Read the complete technical specification for the exact model and configuration, including the processor’s named graphics engine; do not rely on “AI PC” or “Copilot+” wording. Confirm the same GPU appears in the operating system’s graphics information and in the manufacturer’s driver package before comparing benchmarks.
