Yes, but only if the integration and meeting settings separate live access from saved meeting data. Zoom identifies Meeting SDK apps and Real-Time Media Streams (RTMS) integrations as official ways for bots to participate live. Whether a particular agent can listen, transcribe, or retain anything depends on that integration’s permissions and the host’s settings. Turning off cloud video recording alone does not establish that no transcript, summary, or other meeting data will be retained. Zoom’s built-in AI participant workflow for Google Meet and Microsoft Teams is explicitly designed to transcribe and summarize, so it is not a no-transcription option.
What does “without recording” mean in a Zoom meeting?
It can mean three different things: no cloud video recording, no saved transcript, or no retained meeting artifact of any kind. Those are separate outcomes, and disabling one does not establish the others.

- No cloud recording: A video or audio recording is not saved to Zoom’s cloud. This alone says nothing about transcription or other data processing by an integration.
- No saved transcript: No meeting transcript is generated or retained. Zoom’s May 2026 transcript guidance says transcripts are not enabled by default, but a host or administrator can turn them on, including automatic generation in some configurations.
- No retained artifact: No recording, transcript, summary, or other meeting-derived asset is kept. This is the strictest interpretation and requires checking the specific agent and the account, group, user, and meeting settings that apply.
For a useful permission decision, define which of these outcomes you need before inviting an agent. A tool may process live audio to perform its function without creating a cloud video recording; the absence of that recording is not proof that it did not transcribe, process, or retain other information.
Can an AI agent join a Zoom meeting live without recording it?
Potentially. Zoom identifies Meeting SDK apps and RTMS integrations as official live-bot paths, but the existence of an approved connection does not guarantee a no-recording or no-transcript outcome. Check the integration’s behavior and permissions alongside the host’s meeting settings.

Zoom describes bots as participants that can appear in the video tiles and participant list. That means a live agent is not simply a hidden capability that follows from having an AI feature enabled: it joins through an integration and is subject to admission and app controls. Zoom’s documented distinction is between official SDK or RTMS paths and other methods of trying to join a meeting.
Meeting SDK apps
A Meeting SDK app can participate through Zoom’s SDK framework. Zoom says an SDK app that has not been published to the Marketplace cannot join meetings outside the developer’s account. For published apps, hosts can use the Meeting SDK block/allow list to control which apps may join. Therefore, “it uses the SDK” and “this host allows it” are different checks.

RTMS integrations
RTMS is another official integration path Zoom identifies for live bots. The relevant question is not only whether the integration can connect, but what media or meeting data it receives and whether it generates or retains transcripts, summaries, or other artifacts. The specific integration’s configuration and documentation determine those details; an official path alone does not prove that it stores nothing.

Automated bots outside these official paths
Zoom’s bot-security guidance describes bots that attempt to join as participants and appear in the participant list and video tiles. Use the host’s admission controls rather than assuming that every bot is either an approved SDK app or easy to distinguish from a person. Requiring sign-in, restricting permitted domains, and using the waiting room are additional controls Zoom identifies for identity and admission.
How do live access, transcription, and recording differ?
They answer different questions: whether an agent can participate, whether speech is converted into text, and whether a meeting artifact is saved. Treating them as one “recording” switch can leave an unwanted data path enabled.

The table is a practical separation, not a guarantee that every integration exposes each capability as an independent switch. Confirm the behavior of the specific app and the settings that apply to the meeting.

Does Zoom’s built-in AI join a meeting without transcribing?
Zoom’s documented participant workflow for third-party meetings is transcription-oriented: a licensed user can invite Zoom AI to a Google Meet or Microsoft Teams meeting, where it joins as a participant, transcribes, provides a summary, and answers questions afterward. That workflow should not be treated as a no-transcription mode.
Account owners and administrators can enable or disable the capability, and users can configure automatic joining for calendar events. Zoom says an email may notify invitees before the meeting that it will be transcribed. After the assistant joins, a chat message is posted once the meeting has started; its tile displays Zoom branding, the owner’s name, and a “Transcribing” activity status. These visible signals help participants understand what the assistant is doing, but they do not replace checking whether the feature is appropriate for the meeting.
This documented workflow is specifically for third-party Google Meet and Microsoft Teams meetings. Do not assume from it that Zoom AI joins Zoom-hosted meetings in the same way, or that a different live integration has the same behavior.

How can a host allow an agent but prevent recording or transcripts?
Separate the admission decision from the data-retention decision. First decide whether the agent may join; then independently verify the meeting, account, and integration controls for recording, transcription, summaries, and retention.

If live participation is required, identify the specific Meeting SDK app or RTMS integration. Confirm whether it is published where required and whether the host’s Meeting SDK block/allow policy permits it.
- Review identity and admission. Decide whether to require sign-in or restrict domains, and whether to use the waiting room. These controls affect who can enter; they do not, by themselves, turn off transcription or recording.
- Turn off cloud recording if that is the requirement. Verify the relevant meeting and account controls, then check whether the integration has a separate recording or retention function. Do not equate “no cloud recording” with “no saved meeting data.”
- Check transcript settings at each applicable level. Review account, group, and user settings, including whether an administrator has enabled automatic transcript generation. Zoom’s May 2026 guidance says transcripts are not enabled by default, but that default is not proof of the setting in a particular organization.
- Check summaries and the integration’s own data handling. Confirm whether the agent creates summaries or other assets, where it stores them, how long they are retained, and who may access them. The specific integration must answer these questions; Zoom’s official integration category alone does not.
- Set participant notice and consent appropriately. Zoom’s custom AI message feature lets an account owner or administrator require explicit consent before AI recording. If enabled, participants who have not accepted remain in the meeting but cannot unmute or turn on their camera. This consent gate is not proof that every other live data path is disabled.
- Check the result before relying on it. Confirm the participant list and any agent status or notices, and verify the settings that govern the actual meeting. If the requirement is no transcript or retained artifact, do not rely only on the absence of a recording indicator.
Can an AI agent analyze a meeting afterward instead?
Yes, if the user and agent are permitted to access existing meeting assets. This is post-meeting access, not an agent silently attending the live call, and it still depends on the assets that were created and the user’s access rights.
Zoom Chat AI agents
Zoom Chat AI agents can be configured to use meeting transcripts and recordings as knowledge sources, and can use Zoom tools to retrieve meetings, recordings, chat messages, or tasks. Zoom’s feature information says availability is currently limited to US users and lists requirements including a supported Zoom account, a ZoomMate license and AI Credits, Zoom Chat access, a supported desktop app, and Zoom AI being enabled. Availability and eligibility may change, so check the current feature requirements for the account and region before planning around them.
Zoom for ChatGPT
The Zoom for ChatGPT app can access completed-meeting summaries, transcripts, recordings, and documents when the relevant Zoom AI features are enabled and the user hosted the meeting or was granted access. Its video-based features require that the meeting was recorded to the cloud with Smart Recording. That requirement matters if the reason for avoiding a live agent was to avoid a cloud recording: the video-based post-meeting workflow is not a substitute for a no-recording workflow.
Which approach fits a no-recording requirement?
Choose based on whether the agent must be present live and what “no recording” means for your meeting. The safest choice is the one whose data behavior you can verify, not simply the option described as an AI assistant.

Data residency and retention are organization-specific considerations. The available Zoom feature descriptions establish access and workflow details but do not establish a universal residency guarantee or a single retention period for every app, account, and region. For sensitive meetings, check the organization’s policy and the specific integration’s terms before admitting it.

Can participants tell when Zoom AI has joined a third-party meeting?
Zoom says the assistant’s tile displays Zoom branding, the owner’s name, and a “Transcribing” status, and a chat message appears after the meeting starts. Zoom also describes a pre-meeting email notice for invitees when configured.
Can a post-meeting agent use a meeting I did not host?
It may be able to use assets if you have been granted access to them. The Zoom for ChatGPT app’s stated access condition is that the user hosted the meeting or was granted access; an agent’s ability to retrieve an asset does not itself grant permission to view it.
