Yes—if it will stay at a desk and your work is mostly browsing, documents, video playback, programming, and other light-to-moderate tasks. A keyboard PC such as the Raspberry Pi 500 is a plausible replacement for a stationary desktop, but not for a laptop as a self-contained mobile computer: it needs a separate display, power supply, mouse, and display cable. Choose a laptop for mobility, a conventional desktop for demanding work and expansion, and a keyboard PC when a compact computer for a fixed setup is the priority.
What is a keyboard PC?
A keyboard PC is a computer built into a keyboard enclosure. Raspberry Pi’s official documentation lists three models as of November 2026: Raspberry Pi 400, Raspberry Pi 500, and Raspberry Pi 500+. The computer is integrated into the keyboard, but the screen and other parts of a working setup are not.

That distinction matters when comparing it with a laptop. A laptop combines its computer, display, keyboard, pointing device, and battery in one portable unit. A keyboard PC combines only the computer and keyboard; the rest of the setup must be supplied separately. It is closer to a compact desktop than to a laptop, even though its keyboard-shaped case may look self-contained.
The models differ in memory and included storage. Raspberry Pi identifies the 500 and 500+ as based on Raspberry Pi 5, with 8 GB and 16 GB of RAM respectively. The 400 has 4 GB of RAM. The 500+ is described in the current documentation as the most recent keyboard computer.

Can a keyboard PC replace a desktop for everyday work?
It can, provided your desktop workload fits the device and you are comfortable using its software environment. Raspberry Pi identifies web browsing, document creation and editing, video watching, and learning to program as intended uses. Those are meaningful everyday tasks, but they do not establish that every application or workload will run well.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Tasks that fit the documented use case
- Web and online services: Browsing is one of Raspberry Pi’s stated use cases. Check any essential browser-based service and its peripherals against your particular workflow.
- Documents: Creating and editing documents are documented uses. If your work depends on a particular office application, file format, or corporate setup, confirm compatibility before replacing your main computer.
- Video: Watching videos is a stated use, and Raspberry Pi lists 4K video playback among the Raspberry Pi 400’s capabilities. That is a documented capability, not evidence of support for every streaming service, display mode, or video workflow.
- Programming: Raspberry Pi explicitly identifies learning to program as a use. Whether it suits a professional development workflow depends on the required tools, dependencies, and connected hardware.
In practical terms, a keyboard PC is a reasonable candidate for a fixed workstation used for routine web, document, and learning tasks. It becomes a less certain replacement when work depends on specialist creative software, games, proprietary corporate tools, hardware-dependent applications, heavy multitasking, or a specific Windows or macOS program. The official sources do not provide a universal application-compatibility table or independent performance benchmark for every program. Verify the applications you rely on rather than assuming that a familiar desktop task will behave identically.
When a conventional desktop is the safer fit
A desktop remains the better choice if your priorities include maximum sustained performance, a large multi-monitor workstation, broad upgrade flexibility, or full-size ergonomic peripherals for long sessions. Microsoft’s form-factor guidance describes desktops as strong for stationary comfort, performance for the price, and upgrades. A keyboard PC can simplify the computer’s footprint, but it does not erase those desktop advantages.

Can a keyboard PC replace a laptop?
Not as a single mobile all-in-one device. A keyboard PC has no built-in screen or battery, and Raspberry Pi’s desktop instructions call for a separate display, suitable power supply, USB mouse, and micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cable. You can move the computer, but moving it does not give you the laptop’s self-contained, ready-to-use setup.
Choose a laptop instead if you need to work away from a desk or power outlet, move frequently between rooms or offices, travel, present in meetings, or carry one computer with minimal cables. Microsoft’s form-factor guidance also favors laptops for long typing sessions, heavy multitasking, more ports, or a simpler all-in-one setup. The right choice depends on the actual task: a keyboard PC may replace the computer at a fixed desk without replacing the convenience of a laptop elsewhere.
What else do you need to use one?
Budget and plan for a complete workstation, not just the keyboard computer. Raspberry Pi’s setup documentation lists a display, compatible power, mouse, and display cable; storage also matters for the 400 and 500 setups when a microSD card is not already included.
- Keyboard computer: Choose the model that fits your memory and storage needs.
- Monitor or other display: The computer does not include a screen.
- Suitable USB-C power supply: Raspberry Pi lists this as a setup requirement.
- USB mouse: A pointing device is separate from the integrated keyboard.
- Micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cable: Needed to connect a compatible display using the documented setup.
- Storage: A microSD card is needed for Raspberry Pi 400 and 500 setups when one is not supplied with the kit. The 500+ kit listed in the documentation includes a preprogrammed SSD.
The 500+ kit is the most straightforward choice if you want the documented accessories bundled with the computer: it includes the SSD, power supply, mouse, cable, and guide. The 500 kit is also listed with its power supply, mouse, cable, guide, and 32 GB preprogrammed microSD card. A bare computer or a different package may leave some parts to source separately. No price figures are established here, so compare the total price of the parts you actually need in your region rather than treating the computer-only price as the workstation cost.

Which Raspberry Pi keyboard PC should you choose?
Choose according to the amount of memory, storage, and setup completeness you need—not solely by the model number. The official specifications support a clear hardware distinction, but do not establish how a particular application will perform.
Choose Raspberry Pi 500+ for the strongest listed configuration
The 500+ has 16 GB of RAM and its documented kit includes a preprogrammed SSD. It is the natural pick among these models if you want the most memory and the included storage. The documentation describes it as the most recent Raspberry Pi keyboard computer. Those specifications do not make it a substitute for a high-performance desktop when your work is demanding.
Choose Raspberry Pi 500 for the current lower-memory option
The 500 has 8 GB of RAM and its listed kit includes a 32 GB preprogrammed microSD card, power supply, mouse, cable, and guide. It can make sense when that configuration is sufficient and the included storage fits your needs. Confirm required application and peripheral support before relying on it for work.
Consider Raspberry Pi 400 as an earlier supported option
The 400 has 4 GB of RAM. Raspberry Pi also lists wireless networking, dual-display output, 4K video playback, USB ports, Ethernet, Bluetooth, and a 40-pin GPIO header among its features. Raspberry Pi says production is planned until at least January 2028; that is a stated production plan, not a promise of local stock or a statement about how long every retailer will carry it.

What do the display and ports mean for a desk setup?
Raspberry Pi’s documentation lists support for up to two 4K displays, with refresh-rate limits depending on the model. The Raspberry Pi 400 product page also lists dual-display output. Treat “up to two 4K displays” as a model-dependent capability, not a promise that every combination of displays, cables, refresh rates, and work applications will behave the same way.
The 400’s listed connections and GPIO header can matter if your desk uses Ethernet or connects to electronics projects. For any model, check the official connection details against the exact monitor, peripherals, and hardware your work requires. The cited documentation does not establish that every port or specialist device is supported by every model or application.

It may be worth considering if you have an older compatible Windows, Mac, or Linux computer and want to try a different operating system without buying a new keyboard PC. Google says ChromeOS Flex works on many devices manufactured over the last 10 or more years, while recommending currently certified models for the strongest support guarantees. Compatibility is model-specific, so “old PC” alone is not enough to establish support.
ChromeOS Flex is not a direct operating-system replacement for a Raspberry Pi keyboard computer: Google says it does not support ARM architecture. Google also notes that keyboard shortcuts and function keys can differ from standard Chromebooks; some hardware features or ports may be unsupported or untested; and device firmware updates come from the computer’s OEM rather than being managed as on ChromeOS devices. Google does not guarantee that performance, power savings, or battery life will match a standard ChromeOS device.

That makes ChromeOS Flex a separate option for certain existing computers, not a way to turn a Raspberry Pi keyboard computer into a Chromebook. Before installing it, use Google’s certified-model information for the exact computer and account for any hardware feature you depend on.
How should you make the decision?
Start with the constraint most likely to make the choice fail: mobility, application compatibility, or workload. Then check the full workstation setup and its cost.
- List the applications and peripherals your work requires. Identify any specific Windows or macOS program, specialist tool, corporate system, or hardware connection that cannot be replaced. Confirm compatibility before changing your main computer.
- Decide whether the computer must travel as one device. If you need a screen and battery with you, choose a laptop. If it will remain at one desk, a keyboard PC is more plausible.
- Match the workload to the form factor. Routine browsing, documents, video, and programming are documented uses. For sustained demanding work, heavy multitasking, or extensive upgrades, consider a conventional desktop.
- Count every part of the setup. Include the display, power supply, mouse, cable, and required storage. Compare the resulting total with the complete device you would otherwise buy.
- Pick the model based on its documented configuration. The 500+ has 16 GB RAM and an SSD-equipped kit; the 500 has 8 GB RAM and a kit with a 32 GB microSD card; the 400 has 4 GB RAM.
- Check the display and connections before ordering. Confirm that your screen and required peripherals fit the model’s documented outputs and ports, especially if you plan to use two displays or specialist hardware.
The practical dividing line is straightforward: a keyboard PC can be a useful fixed-desk computer when its software and workload fit. It is not a one-for-one laptop replacement, and it is not the strongest choice when performance, ergonomics, or expansion matter more than compactness.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Raspberry Pi 500’s first boot take only 60–90 seconds?
Raspberry Pi’s documentation gives 60–90 seconds for the documented first-boot process. That figure refers to booting, not the full time needed to connect peripherals, configure a workspace, or install and set up applications.
Can a keyboard PC work with any monitor?
Not necessarily: the setup documentation specifies a micro-HDMI-to-HDMI cable, so check the display’s inputs and the model’s output requirements before buying. The published support for up to two 4K displays also has model-dependent refresh-rate limits.
Is Raspberry Pi 400 still being made?
Raspberry Pi says production is planned to continue until at least January 2028. That statement does not guarantee availability from a particular retailer or in a particular country.
