Yes, a phono cartridge can contribute to turntable hum, but it is not the most likely cause in every system. A loose or oxidized cartridge connection, an ungrounded cartridge shield, or an internal cartridge fault can create or worsen hum. The same symptom is also commonly caused by an incorrectly connected earth wire, defective RCA cables, ground loops, or interference from mains wiring, transformers and motors.
Start with connection and grounding checks before buying a replacement cartridge. The fastest method is to observe whether the hum changes when you approach the headshell, then isolate the turntable, cables and other powered equipment one connection at a time.

A cartridge converts the stylus’s mechanical movement into a very small electrical signal. Because the signal is so low in level, the cartridge wiring and its return path are vulnerable to electromagnetic fields and poor contacts. Four tiny cartridge pins connect to four tonearm leads: left hot, left return, right hot and right return. A loose or contaminated contact can leave one of those paths unstable, allowing audible hum or intermittent noise.
The cartridge body or headshell may also include a metal shield. That shield must be connected to the intended ground through the cartridge and tonearm wiring. Klipsch’s troubleshooting guidance identifies a particular clue: if hum becomes louder as a hand approaches the cartridge headshell, the cartridge’s metal shield may not be grounded. An internal cartridge-grounding fault is possible, although that test alone does not prove the cartridge is defective.

Cartridge-side faults usually affect the sound when the cartridge is selected and the tonearm is connected. They do not explain every hum heard from a turntable. A mains-frequency problem elsewhere in the system can produce an identical low-pitched tone.
How can I tell whether the cartridge is involved?
Use the hum’s behavior as a diagnostic clue rather than guessing from its volume. Perform these observations with the amplifier volume low enough to protect your speakers.
| Observation | What it suggests | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Hum increases when your hand approaches or lightly touches the headshell | The cartridge shield, headshell ground or cartridge-lead contact may be open | It does not by itself prove the cartridge needs replacement |
| Hum changes when you gently move a cartridge lead or reseat the headshell | A loose, oxidized or mis-seated pin or tonearm lead | The cable or tonearm connector could also be at fault |
| Hum remains with the turntable disconnected from the amplifier input | The amplifier input, another source or a powered accessory may be creating the noise | It does not identify a cartridge fault |
| Hum appears only when a computer, powered speaker or other device is connected | A ground loop or shield-current problem between devices | The cartridge may be functioning normally |
| Hum follows the cartridge when a known-good cartridge is installed | A cartridge or its immediate connections are implicated | Compatibility and alignment still must be checked |
| One channel hums or cuts out while the other is normal | A channel-specific pin, lead, RCA plug or internal cartridge connection | It can also be a phono-stage input fault |
There is no defensible published percentage for how many turntable-hum cases originate in cartridges. Treat the cartridge as one branch of the diagnosis, not as the default explanation.
Could the earth wire or a ground loop be the real cause?
Yes. Cambridge Audio explains that multiple ground paths can create a voltage difference that appears as 50/60 Hz hum. A turntable’s separate earth lead is intended to give the tonearm and chassis a controlled reference at the phono stage or amplifier. If that wire is missing, attached to the wrong terminal, or making poor contact, the system can hum even with a healthy cartridge.

The opposite problem is a ground loop: two connected devices provide more than one path to ground, and unwanted current flows through cable shields. Sound Devices notes that unbalanced cable shields can carry both signal return and ground-loop current. Computers, powered speakers, subwoofers, mixers and USB-connected equipment are common additions that expose a loop.
Technics lists incorrect earth-lead connection as a turntable-hum cause. Follow the specific turntable and phono-stage instructions: most systems use a spade or fork terminal marked GND, GROUND or EARTH. Do not connect the earth wire to a random signal pin or mains safety terminal.

Change one variable at a time and listen at low volume. This sequence separates cartridge contacts from grounding, cables and environmental interference.
- Lower the amplifier volume and select the phono input. Determine whether the hum is present with the stylus lifted. Never begin by touching exposed cartridge pins while the system is powered at normal listening level.
- Disconnect the turntable’s RCA plugs from the phono input. If the hum disappears, the noise is entering through the turntable, its cables or its earth connection. If it remains, investigate the amplifier, phono stage and other connected sources first.
- Power down all equipment before touching wiring. Remove and firmly reconnect the cartridge, headshell and RCA connections. Oxidation, dust and a connector that is only partly seated can interrupt the return path.
- Check the cartridge pins and tonearm leads. Inspect for bent pins, loose crimp sleeves or a lead that has slipped off. Clean contacts only with an appropriate electronics contact cleaner and a lint-free tool; avoid flooding the cartridge or stylus assembly.
- Reconnect the earth lead exactly as specified. Tighten the terminal enough to hold the connector securely, but do not force a fragile post. If the turntable has no separate earth lead, do not add one unless its manufacturer specifies a grounding point.
- Perform the headshell approach test. With the system quiet and the stylus safely above the record, bring a hand near the headshell without touching the stylus. A large change in hum points toward shielding or cartridge-lead grounding and justifies a closer inspection.
- Re-route the signal cables. Keep phono interconnects away from AC cords, power bricks, transformers, motors and fluorescent lights. Cross a mains cable at a right angle rather than running the two cables together.
- Expose possible ground loops. Temporarily disconnect a computer, powered speaker, subwoofer or other accessory, then reconnect devices one at a time. The device whose connection brings the hum back is part of the loop; solve the topology rather than randomly removing safety grounds.
- Substitute one known-good part. Try a known-good RCA cable first, then—only if the mounting and electrical requirements match—a known-good cartridge. If the hum follows the cartridge, replacement or professional service is reasonable.
How should I inspect and clean cartridge contacts?
Cartridge connections are delicate. A careful inspection often fixes hum without changing the cartridge.

Power down and secure the stylus
Switch off the amplifier and turntable, unplug power, and fit the stylus guard. If the cartridge is removable, support the headshell so it cannot fall or twist while you work.
Check the four signal pins
Look for dull or greenish oxidation, a pin pushed into the cartridge body, or a connector sleeve that no longer grips. Do not scrape aggressively; plating can be removed and the pin can be loosened internally.
Check the four tonearm leads
Each tiny lead should be fully seated on its corresponding pin. A lead that rotates freely or pulls off with almost no resistance needs repair, not repeated bending. Note the original color positions before removing anything so left and right channels are not reversed.
Clean and reseat
Use a small amount of suitable contact cleaner on the connector—not on the stylus, cantilever or suspension—then allow it to evaporate. Refit the leads straight, reinstall the headshell, lock it firmly and retest before changing any alignment setting.

How can I reduce magnetic and mains interference?
Phono-level wiring can pick up fields that would be inaudible at line level. Place the turntable on a stable surface away from equipment containing large transformers or motors. Keep the phono stage and its input cables away from power strips, AC adapters, fluorescent fixtures and bundled mains wiring.
Do not assume that a more expensive cable will cure a loop. First shorten the cable route, separate signal and power wiring, and remove unnecessary powered connections. If moving the turntable changes the hum level, the environment is contributing even if the cartridge contacts are perfect.

Replace the cartridge only after the hum follows it through the preceding checks and the replacement is electrically and mechanically suitable. A cartridge that works in one tonearm may hum, distort or overload a phono stage in another if its mounting or loading requirements differ.
| Compatibility check | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|
| Mount | Confirm the cartridge uses the tonearm’s mounting pattern, such as the applicable standard screw spacing or a compatible integrated mount. |
| Generator type | Match moving-magnet (MM) or moving-coil (MC) output to a phono input that supports that type. An MC cartridge connected to an MM-only input can be far too quiet; the reverse pairing can have the wrong gain and loading. |
| Output level | Check the cartridge’s stated output against the phono stage’s sensitivity so normal volume does not require excessive gain. |
| Load requirements | Verify resistance and capacitance loading, especially for MM designs. An incorrect load can change tonal balance even after the hum is fixed. |
| Tonearm fit | Check cartridge mass, compliance and the tonearm’s adjustment range. A physically mountable cartridge is not automatically a good resonance match. |
| Alignment | After installation, set overhang, offset angle and tracking force according to the cartridge and tonearm instructions. Misalignment causes distortion, not normally mains hum, but it can make a replacement seem faulty. |
If a replacement cartridge produces the same hum in the same position, reinstall the original and return to the earth, cable and interference branches. Replacing multiple parts at once removes the evidence needed to identify the fault.

What if the hum is actually buzz, hiss or channel noise?
A steady low tone that tracks the system’s electrical environment is typical of hum. A sharper buzz can indicate rectifier or switching interference, while broadband hiss is usually gain or noise-floor related. Crackling when the arm moves points more strongly to an intermittent contact than to a fixed cartridge-shield problem.
Compare the sound with the stylus lifted, the RCA plugs disconnected, and the volume control changed. Hum that is unaffected by volume may be entering after the preamp stage; hum that rises with phono gain is entering at the cartridge, cable or phono input. These observations help you avoid treating every unwanted sound as a cartridge failure.

What are the most common mistakes during troubleshooting?
- Replacing the cartridge first: an earth-wire error or ground loop can leave the new cartridge humming exactly like the old one.
- Working with the amplifier turned up: a brief contact or cable pop can damage speakers and startle you.
- Pulling cartridge leads by the wire: the crimp or the tonearm lead can break, creating a new fault.
- Adding an improvised ground: connecting signal returns to mains safety earth can create a hazardous or noisy arrangement.
- Moving several cables at once: you lose the ability to identify which change removed the hum.
- Ignoring compatibility: a cartridge can be mechanically secure yet electrically unsuitable for the phono stage.
What is the most reliable decision path?
If hum changes when you approach the headshell, inspect cartridge pins, tonearm leads and shielding first. If hum disappears when the RCA plugs are removed, verify the earth lead and substitute the cable. If disconnecting a computer or powered accessory cures it, solve the ground loop. Only when the fault follows a compatible cartridge should replacement be the next step.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a bad stylus itself cause electrical hum?
The stylus tip and cantilever normally generate the signal mechanically; they do not provide the cartridge’s electrical ground. Hum is more often related to the cartridge pins, internal wiring, shield or external grounding, although a damaged cartridge assembly can require service.
Should I connect a turntable ground wire to the amplifier chassis?
Use the dedicated ground or earth terminal specified for the phono input. An arbitrary chassis screw may not provide the intended reference and can create a new loop; follow the turntable and phono-stage manuals for systems without a separate ground terminal.
Why does hum get louder when I touch the tonearm?
Your body can couple nearby electrical fields into an unshielded or poorly grounded arm and cartridge circuit. A strong change when touching the arm is a reason to inspect the headshell ground and lead contacts before assuming the cartridge generator has failed.

Can a USB connection make an otherwise quiet turntable hum?
Yes. A computer or USB-powered device can create a second ground path through its power and signal connections. Disconnect that device temporarily, confirm the hum disappears, then reconnect equipment individually and change the grounding topology rather than defeating protective earth.
