Yes—if your priority is a Linux desktop and access to Steam and PC games, rather than PlayStation exclusives. The closest living-room replacement is Valve’s Steam Machine; the Steam Deck OLED and Lenovo Legion Go S are the simplest handheld routes, while an AMD mini PC running Bazzite can cost less but requires setup. None is a drop-in PS5 replacement for every game: some major online titles still block Linux, and PlayStation exclusives may never arrive on PC.

Prices and availability are US figures; mini-PC and Legion Go S amounts reflect secondary listings reported in October 2026, not guaranteed checkout prices. The Steam Machine’s GPU description comes from consistent secondary launch reporting, not a retrieved Valve specification sheet. The table’s handheld and mini-PC performance categories are not directly comparable to a fixed-console benchmark.

Why can’t a PS5 run Linux or Steam games?
A PS5 is a PlayStation-game console, not a general-purpose PC. Sony advertises its console around PlayStation games, DualSense features, 4K/HDR, and PS Plus; it does not offer a supported Linux desktop, Steam client, Proton layer, or route to a general Steam library.
The PS5 still makes sense if you want its console experience and PlayStation games. PlayStation Direct listed its 1TB disc model at $649 in 2026, with a DualSense controller, HDMI cable, and Astro’s Playroom included; its availability was shown as currently unavailable when checked. Sony advertises an ultra-high-speed SSD, Tempest 3D Audio, ray tracing, and output up to 120Hz. Its own pages give inconsistent PS4 backwards-compatibility counts, so a single number would be misleading.

A PlayStation Portal streams games from a PS5; it does not turn that console into a PC. And while some PlayStation games reach PC, timed or absent ports mean a Linux PC cannot guarantee access to the same exclusive catalog. From January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be digital-only, while discs for older titles will still play.
Which alternative is closest to a PS5 in the living room?
The Steam Machine is the closest match in shape and purpose: a small PC intended to connect to a TV, boot into a controller-first Steam interface, and also provide a Linux desktop. It is not a cheaper console, and it should not be bought on the assumption that it will outperform a PS5.

Valve’s SteamOS provides access to a large Steam catalog through Linux and Proton, alongside the flexibility of a desktop. The Verge’s Sean Hollister reported that the review unit was small, cool, and quiet, and that desktop mode accepted a keyboard, mouse, USB hub, two monitors, and an external Blu-ray drive. HDMI-CEC could wake the TV from a Steam Controller or an 8BitDo Pro 2, and the reviewer recorded nearly 1Gbps over a 1Gbps fiber connection.
The Verge’s game settings show the kind of trade-offs involved, rather than a universal preset: on a VRR television with a 40fps minimum target, Hollister reported Indiana Jones or Returnal at 1440p medium, Forza Horizon 6 at 1440p high, Cyberpunk 2077 at upscaled 4K high, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider at native 4K medium. Its default output was 1080p until manually changed. The Verge found PS5-class, not PS5-beating, image quality in the games it compared and noted that games needed manual settings; sleep reliability was also a concern in that review.
Price, availability, and caveats
The available 2026 price list has four configurations: 512GB standalone, 512GB with Steam Controller, 2TB standalone, and 2TB with controller, as shown in the comparison table for the two entry configurations. The 2TB model is $1,349, or $1,428 bundled with the controller, and includes red fabric and walnut faceplates. TweakTown quoted Valve saying that component costs secured over the preceding six months had made its original target price unworkable. Valve also contrasted its open-ecosystem approach with the traditional console model of selling hardware at a loss and earning revenue through subscriptions or locked-in game sales.
Valve told The Verge that FSR 4 was coming and that a driver update should improve ray tracing by as much as 20% in some games; those are prospective vendor statements, not a guarantee for every title. SteamOS 3.9.5 release notes reported fixes for Steam Machine Remote Play when booting without a display, firmware updates, and game behavior after suspend, indicating support work for shipping hardware. The Machine suits someone who values a living-room SteamOS appliance and desktop flexibility enough to accept its price and settings work. If the price premium or PS5-like performance is the deciding issue, it is a poor substitute.
Which handheld runs more Steam games?
For the least complicated Linux handheld, the Steam Deck OLED remains the reference point. For a larger screen with official SteamOS support, consider the Legion Go S SteamOS model. For higher performance or a must-play Windows game, the ROG Xbox Ally X is a stronger hardware option, but using Bazzite on it adds setup and compatibility considerations.

Steam Deck OLED: simplest SteamOS choice
The Deck OLED runs SteamOS 3, based on Arch Linux, with KDE Plasma desktop mode. Its 7.4-inch HDR OLED panel is 1280×800 and supports up to 90Hz; the APU is a 6nm AMD chip with four Zen 2 CPU cores and eight RDNA 2 GPU compute units. Valve specifies 16GB LPDDR5-6400 memory, a 50Wh battery, and an estimated 3–12 hours of play depending on content. The device weighs about 640g.
Valve lists DisplayPort over USB-C for up to 8K at 60Hz or 4K at 120Hz. Its official dock, priced in the comparison below, adds external display, wired networking, USB, and power connections. The Deck’s UHS-I microSD support makes it practical to expand storage, and The Verge reported that a card can move to Steam Machine after the relevant Proton dependencies install. The 1TB OLED adds etched anti-glare glass, a startup movie, and a keyboard theme; the 512GB and 1TB models otherwise share the panel and core hardware. Valve warns that OLED stock may be intermittent in some regions because of memory and storage shortages. Certified refurbished units may save up to 20% and carry a one-year warranty.
Legion Go S SteamOS: bigger display, not a dramatic GPU leap
Valve lists the Legion Go S SteamOS model as its only third-party handheld in the Powered by SteamOS program, alongside Valve hardware. Lenovo’s listed configuration uses a Ryzen Z2 Go with four cores and eight threads, 16GB LPDDR5X-6400, 512GB M.2 2242 storage, and an 8-inch 1920×1200 IPS display with 120Hz VRR. Its battery is 55.5Wh, weight about 740g, and connectivity includes two USB4 ports and microSD.
The Z2 Go is closer to Deck-class silicon than to Z2 Extreme devices. The Go S therefore trades on a larger, sharper screen and somewhat more battery, not a major graphics jump. Recent demanding games may need FSR upscaling rather than native 1200p. The October Amazon US range in the table reflects reported street listings; a used Windows Z2 Go 16GB/512GB unit may be cheaper and can use the SteamOS recovery image, but that involves installing the OS yourself.
ROG Xbox Ally models: choose Windows or accept Linux setup
The standard ROG Xbox Ally has a Ryzen Z2 A four-core/eight-thread processor, 16GB memory, 512GB storage, a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz display, and 60Wh battery; it weighs about 670g. The Ally X upgrades to Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme with eight cores and 16 threads, 24GB memory, 1TB storage, an 80Wh battery, and a weight of 715g. Both are Windows handhelds, with Bazzite support for the family from Bazzite 43. Valve’s SteamOS June notes added controller, TDP, and audio support for the series.
One published creator test, reported by Notebookcheck, compared Windows 11 and Bazzite on an Ally X in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II: at 17W it recorded 47fps on Windows and 62fps on Bazzite; at 13W the figures were 35 and 37fps. In Hogwarts Legacy at 13W, it recorded 38fps on Windows and 37fps on Bazzite. These results are specific to one creator, two games, and the reported settings; they do not establish that Linux is generally faster.
Bazzite’s Ally-family documentation notes practical issues: TDP can remain stuck after changing chargers while in standby, speakers need both devices level-matched, and the fingerprint reader may not work. It advises setting UEFI VRAM to 4GB or 8GB before installation. For a brand-new model such as the ROG Xbox Ally X20, Bazzite support was still in testing on 23 October 2026; Windows is the safer choice until support matures. RGB, fan, and gyro functions were still unfinished for that model at that time.

Other handhelds for specific needs
The Legion Go 2 is a larger, more tabletop-oriented option: its 8.8-inch 1920×1200 OLED supports 144Hz, it has detachable controllers and a kickstand, and configurations reach Ryzen Z2 Extreme, 32GB memory, and a 74Wh battery. It weighs about 920g. SteamOS updates in June added controller and firmware support; October notes added preliminary brightness support and a Forza Horizon 6 crash fix. An October Amazon listing reported by ComputingForGeeks put a Z2, 16GB, 1TB unit around $1,350. Treat it as a portable table console more than a comfortable small handheld.
The GPD Win 5 uses Ryzen AI Max+ 395 graphics with 40 compute units and was listed around $2,450, placing it in enthusiast territory. The MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ appears as a Windows performance pick in some roundups, but Linux support is not a reason to choose it for this use case.
How much game performance should you expect?
Performance depends on the exact game, power limit, resolution, graphics settings, and whether a title runs natively or through Proton. The following 800p figures are FPSVibe model estimates, not new benchmarks: its 18 October 2026 model was fitted to published reviews across 210 games, used on-battery top modes, and had a reported median error of about 12% on held-out reviews.
| Handheld configuration in FPSVibe model | Typical 800p Medium estimate | Games at 30fps or more out of 210 |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck, 15W | 34fps | 103 |
| ROG Xbox Ally, Turbo 20W | 34fps | 119 |
| Legion Go S, Performance 30W | 38fps | 133 |
| ROG Ally, Turbo 25W | 48fps | 168 |
| ROG Ally X, Turbo 25W | 52fps | 173 |
| Legion Go 2, Performance 20W | 55fps | 176 |
| ROG Xbox Ally X, Turbo 25W | 59fps | 184 |
For individual examples from that model, Cyberpunk 2077 at 800p Medium is estimated at 28fps on Deck, 42fps on Ally X, and 47fps on Xbox Ally X; Elden Ring is estimated at 35, 53, and 60fps respectively. Those are estimates for the listed model conditions, not promises for different power modes or resolutions. FPSVibe’s older launch-price figures for Deck models are not current retail prices.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can you play every Steam game on Linux?
No. SteamOS and Bazzite run many Windows games through Proton, including Direct3D 12 games with VKD3D-Proton 3.1, but Linux is not a compatibility superset of Windows. Steam Deck Verified and Playable badges are useful first filters; Unknown does not mean that a game will work.
FPSVibe checked Valve Deck compatibility information and anti-cheat trackers on 17 October 2026 and counted 29 of 210 tracked games that either would not start or could not be played online on SteamOS. Examples included Fortnite, Valorant, Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Warzone, PUBG, Rainbow Six Siege, Destiny 2, and EA Sports FC 26. Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye work with many Linux games when developers enable support, but kernel-level anti-cheat remains a barrier for a notable slice of live-service games. If one of those titles is essential, choose a Windows handheld instead of assuming a Linux distribution will solve it.
For other launchers, Heroic can access Epic and GOG libraries from SteamOS or Bazzite; The Verge used it to run Alan Wake II on Steam Machine. Bazzite’s site lists Lutris preinstalled and support for launchers including EA, Ubisoft, Rockstar, and itch.io. This is not the same as every game working seamlessly, so check ProtonDB and GamingOnLinux’s anti-cheat page for specific titles before buying.

PC Game Pass and Microsoft Store PC games are officially Windows-only. Club386 reported that the open-source Xodus Nexus project could download and run some Store or PC Game Pass titles on Linux, including experimental SteamOS. Its developer claimed at least 42 fully playable games, including online play, but reports also mention crashes and online problems. This is an unofficial project, not a Microsoft-supported feature or a reliable substitute for Windows Game Pass.
Should you install Bazzite or SteamOS on a mini PC?
For most AMD mini PCs outside Valve’s supported list, Bazzite is the practical SteamOS-like route. SteamOS 3.8 opened custom living-room PC installs in a test channel, but those installations are AMD-GPU-only, require Secure Boot off, and do not make a random mini PC officially Powered by SteamOS. Bazzite’s Deck/HTPC image boots into Steam Gaming Mode through Gamescope and retains a desktop environment.
What hardware fits the job?
A 780M- or 890M-class mini PC is best treated as a 1080p low-to-medium-settings machine, not a PS5-equivalent graphics box. The ComputingForGeeks shortlist below is based on October 2026 Amazon listings; it did not bench these boxes. Any frame rate mentioned here comes from the named third-party Windows test, not a Bazzite result.
| Use case | Mini PC or accessory | Graphics | Approximate price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Machine-class integrated graphics | GMKtec EVO-X2, Ryzen AI Max+ 395 | Radeon 8060S, 40 compute units | About $2,200 |
| Fast 890M option | Minisforum AI X1 Pro-370 | 890M, 16 compute units | About $1,230 |
| Upgradeable 780M option | Minisforum UM890 Pro | 780M, 12 compute units | About $990 |
| Value 1080p option | Beelink SER9 Pro, Ryzen 7 H 255 | 780M, 12 compute units | About $700 |
| Budget or lighter games | GMKtec NucBox M6 Ultra | 760M, 8 compute units | About $500 |
| TV control accessory | Pulse-Eight USB-CEC Adapter | Not applicable | About $57 |
These are approximate October 2026 listing prices and may move; verify the current price and the exact memory and storage configuration. MiniPCs.zip reported lower-cost listings that day, including a $329.99 Getorli GT103 with 660M graphics and a $419 Acemagic W1 with Ryzen 7 255 and 780M graphics. Those listings change quickly, so verify the processor, RAM, and SSD in the specific listing.
Named Windows results illustrate the range without proving Linux performance: Notebookcheck reported Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p Medium at 34.3fps on the SER9 Pro’s 780M; ETA Prime results reported by Notebookcheck put Forza Horizon 5 at 1080p Medium at 109fps on an 890M. Club386 recorded 66.8fps in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p High on a Radeon 8060S in an MS-S1 Max running at 130W. Phoronix Linux testing cited by ComputingForGeeks put 890M roughly 25% above a 780M-class chip. These examples have different systems, settings, and sources; they are not a direct ranking.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The 8060S is the only integrated GPU tier in this shortlist that ComputingForGeeks did not characterize as a downgrade from Steam Machine, but the corresponding box costs about twice the Machine’s base price. On integrated-graphics systems, system RAM also serves as graphics memory, so avoid the smallest soldered-RAM configuration. OCuLink on the two Minisforum systems offers an external GPU upgrade path. A 1TB NVMe drive is a practical library target; MiniPCs.zip recommends at least 16GB RAM, with 32GB preferable.
Installation requirements and safer setup
Bazzite documentation lists modern AMD graphics (RX 4xx or newer, including 600M and 700M integrated GPUs) as the preferred Steam Gaming Mode path. Intel Arc is supported with minor caveats; Nvidia has major caveats and uses an experimental -deck-nvidia image. The documented baseline is UEFI with GPT, 8GB RAM minimum, and a 50GB SSD minimum, with 120GB recommended. Use Btrfs or ext4 for game drives: NTFS and exFAT are unsupported for Proton prefixes and can cause corruption or missing symlinks.

- Confirm the device and graphics support. Check the exact GPU, firmware settings, and whether the model is established or still in testing. For a new handheld with unfinished Linux support, remain on Windows until the missing controls and drivers are addressed.
- Back up before changing partitions. If keeping Windows in a dual-boot arrangement, reserve 40–60GB free at minimum; 100GB or more is more realistic for games. Save the Windows product key before a full wipe if you may want to restore Windows.
- Prepare the installer. Tech Insider’s June 2026 guide calls for a 16GB USB drive. Follow the current Bazzite installation instructions for the selected image and device rather than assuming a generic mini-PC image fits every handheld.
- Install and set controls deliberately. On Ally-family devices, set UEFI VRAM to 4GB or 8GB before installation. After first boot, confirm audio, controls, power behavior, display refresh, and sleep before moving a large game library.
- Test games and recovery paths before relying on the device. Check the compatibility status of must-play titles and preserve enough free space for updates. Bazzite uses image-based updates and retains the prior image for rollback if an update causes trouble.
Steam Cloud can move supported saves between a Windows PC and a Linux device, but the game must support Steam Cloud and be signed into the same Steam account. It is not a universal save-transfer mechanism.
Which one should you buy?
Choose based on the games and the amount of setup you are willing to own—not on the assumption that “PC” automatically means every game works.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- You want a couch-focused official SteamOS computer: choose Steam Machine if you can pay the premium and accept manual settings and allocation uncertainty.
- You want portable Steam gaming with little tinkering: choose Steam Deck OLED, or Legion Go S SteamOS if a larger 1200p display matters more than compactness.
- You want a TV-connected Linux PC for less: choose an AMD 780M-class mini PC with Bazzite if you are comfortable making a boot USB, setting up the OS, and checking game compatibility. An 890M model adds graphics headroom; an 8060S-class system costs substantially more.
- You want handheld speed and will install Linux: choose the ROG Xbox Ally X, after confirming the exact model’s Bazzite support and checking device-specific caveats.
- You want the lowest cash outlay among the named new handhelds: the standard ROG Xbox Ally costs less than the Deck OLED, but it ships with Windows, not SteamOS.
- You must play Fortnite, Valorant, Warzone, or Destiny 2 on the handheld itself: stay with Windows on a capable handheld; SteamOS does not bypass kernel anti-cheat restrictions.
- You need PlayStation exclusives that have no PC port: keep or buy a PS5. None of these Linux PCs can guarantee those games.
What does it cost to make a handheld work on a TV?
A dock is optional, but it makes a handheld more convenient as a living-room PC by providing power, display output, and additional connections. Valve’s Steam Deck Docking Station was listed at $79 in 2026. A DualSense controller was listed by PlayStation Direct at $74; Bazzite documents out-of-the-box PlayStation-controller support, while Steam Input handles controller mapping on Deck and Steam Machine.
Steam Machine has HDMI-CEC built in. Many mini PCs need a separate USB-CEC adapter if you want the TV to wake or switch behavior to feel console-like. For TV storage, a microSD card can help on Deck, but a mini PC is better served by an appropriately sized SSD for a large installed library. Do not assume a Windows-formatted external game drive is suitable for Proton prefixes; use a supported filesystem for those files.
How We Picked
The options above reflect the actual decision the title asks about: Linux support, access to PC games, a usable TV or handheld form factor, and the trade-off between ease of setup, performance class, cost, and Windows-only compatibility. Official SteamOS hardware, established Bazzite support, and realistic mini-PC graphics tiers are treated separately rather than collapsed into one performance ranking. Prices are US figures attributed to Valve, ASUS, PlayStation Direct, or the named October listing coverage; performance numbers are labeled by their published source and conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use one Steam library on both Linux and Windows?
Yes. Games tied to your Steam account can be installed on either operating system, but a Linux device may need Proton and some games may not work. Steam Cloud can sync saves only for titles that support it.
Will my Windows game drive work with Bazzite?
A drive can store ordinary files, but Bazzite documentation does not support NTFS or exFAT for Proton prefixes. Use a supported Linux filesystem for the prefix-bearing game installation to avoid missing symlinks or corruption.
Is the ROG Xbox Ally X20 ready for Bazzite?
As of 23 October 2026, support was still in testing, with RGB, fan, and gyro functions unfinished. That status can change, so check for device-specific support updates before replacing Windows.
Can I use a PlayStation controller on a Linux gaming PC?
Bazzite documents out-of-the-box PlayStation controller support, and Steam Input can handle mapping on Deck and Steam Machine. The DualSense is a separate purchase rather than an included accessory for those PCs.
