Yes, latex gloves can be 3D printed. A 2026 laboratory study used spray deposition to build a freestanding natural-rubber glove on a heated ceramic hand former. The prototype reached tensile strength and stretch values within the range of commercial examination and surgical gloves tested. The serious obstacle is manufacturing consistency: high-solids commercial latex clogged the spray nozzle, while dilution improved spraying but caused dripping, uneven films and more water to evaporate. The work is therefore a proof of concept, not evidence that conventional glove-dipping factories can already be replaced. Its proposed industrial line is modeled from assumptions rather than measured production output.
What did the 2026 study actually demonstrate?
The study demonstrated a complete experimental glove made from natural-rubber latex by spray deposition. The researchers developed an in-house 3D Printer for Elastomeric Products (3D-PEP), sprayed latex onto a heated ceramic hand former, dried the deposited film and then removed the glove from the former. The former is temporary support; unlike ordinary spray coating, the deposited latex becomes a freestanding object after removal.

Earlier attempts to make glove-like films with inkjet, drop-on-demand, direct-ink-write and vat-photopolymerization methods faced limitations in producing thin, continuous, freestanding elastomer films. Spray deposition was selected to address that specific geometry problem.

How does the 3D-PEP spray process work?
The process builds the glove as a wet latex film on a form, rather than curing a liquid resin in a vat or assembling separate parts. The reported laboratory arrangement followed this sequence:
- Prepare the former: a ceramic hand former was heated to 50 °C. It provides the temporary hand shape and helps the deposited film dry.
- Load the latex: the prototype used commercial pre-vulcanised natural-rubber latex. Because the latex was already pre-vulcanised, the reported process did not add a separate post-vulcanisation step.
- Spray the film: a gravity-fed spray gun with a 1.5 mm nozzle delivered the material using compressed air at 3.5 bar from a 60 mm deposition distance.
- Dry on the former: the deposited layers formed the glove wall while supported by the heated ceramic hand.
- Assist release: cornstarch was applied to reduce natural latex’s inherent stickiness, allowing the dried glove to be removed from the former.
Those settings describe the reported proof of concept. They are not universal production specifications. A factory would need to control spray behavior, film thickness, drying, release and equipment uptime over many formers and glove sizes.

High-solids latex clogged the spray nozzle during the initial trials. The material contains a large fraction of rubber solids, which is useful for building a film but difficult to atomize and move continuously through a small nozzle. The team found that dilution with deionised water and ammonium hydroxide was more suitable for continuous deposition at that stage of development.
Why dilution helps
Reducing the solids concentration makes the feed easier to spray and lowers the immediate risk of nozzle blockage. That can keep deposition running for longer and produce a more continuous film than the original high-solids formulation.
Why too much dilution creates new failures
Excess water changes how the wet film behaves on the former. The diluted latex can drip before it dries, producing non-uniform thickness and wasted material. Every additional unit of water also has to be evaporated, increasing drying time or energy demand. The central process trade-off is therefore:
- More concentrated latex: less water to remove and potentially better material efficiency, but a greater risk of clogging and interrupted deposition.
- More diluted latex: easier continuous spraying, but more dripping, unevenness, waste and evaporation work.
The paper does not claim that dilution solved scale-up. It identifies a formulation and equipment problem that still needs process development, particularly if a production line must run reliably for long periods.

How strong and stretchy were the printed gloves?
The authors tensile-tested six specimens from each of three groups: the 3D-printed glove, a commercial examination glove and a commercial surgical glove. The reported averages were:
| Glove group | Mean tensile strength | Mean maximum strain |
|---|---|---|
| 3D-printed latex glove | 19.2 MPa | 767.0% |
| Commercial examination glove | 22.7 MPa | 707.6% |
| Commercial surgical glove | 25.9 MPa | 782.7% |
In these mechanical tests, the printed samples were in the range of the commercial benchmarks. Their mean tensile strength was lower than both commercial groups, while their mean maximum strain was higher than the examination-glove samples and close to the surgical-glove samples.
These results establish mechanical behavior for the tested specimens only. They do not establish resistance to microorganisms, chemical permeation, pinholes, aging, donning damage or other barrier properties. They also do not show that the glove meets a medical-device standard or is authorized for clinical use.
Does the prototype have medical-glove barrier validation?
No. The study reports tensile strength and maximum strain, but it does not report barrier testing for the printed glove. A separate 2025 publication describes a method for measuring medical-glove barrier performance while gloves are stretched and references ASTM F1671-22 test conditions. That method is relevant to what a future validation program could examine; it is not evidence that the 3D-PEP glove was tested with it or passed it.
Barrier qualification would require a defined test program covering the intended use. Mechanical results alone cannot demonstrate protection from blood-borne pathogens, sterile packaging integrity, chemical exposure or reliable performance after repeated stretching. The 2026 paper also does not establish regulatory authorization, a production quality system or clinical suitability.
Are 3D-printed latex gloves ready for mass production?
Not on the evidence reported. The study produced a laboratory glove and presented a modeled industrial configuration, but it did not operate a commercial 3D-PEP factory or report production-line throughput, cost, uptime or validated waste rates.

The authors’ industrial analysis combined conventional-line data supplied by Meditech Gloves with assumptions for a future 3D-PEP installation. Its inputs included:
| Modeled input | Value or description |
|---|---|
| Material efficiency | 90% |
| Latex concentration | 55% total solids content |
| Spray equipment | Two simultaneous nozzles |
| Estimated rubber deposition | 250 g/h of natural rubber |
| Average surgical-glove mass | 10.5 g |
| Average examination-glove mass | 6.1 g |
| Material movement | Continuous movement of formers through deposition, drying and/or vulcanisation, then stripping |
These figures are modeling inputs, not observations from an industrial 3D-PEP line. For example, the 90% efficiency assumption does not prove that a factory would achieve 90% yield, and the 250 g/h estimate does not constitute measured nozzle output under sustained operating conditions.

What advantages does the proposed industrial design offer?
The paper proposes a modular arrangement in which formers move continuously through deposition, drying or vulcanisation and stripping. The authors argue that such modules could let a plant make different products at the same time and change production more quickly than a large, dedicated dipping line.
Product flexibility
Separate modules could, in principle, be configured for different glove products or sizes without redesigning an entire line. That is a proposed benefit of the architecture, not a demonstrated commercial result.
Maintenance containment
If production is divided among modules, maintenance on one module could affect a smaller share of factory output than maintenance on a single large dipping line. The study presents this as a potential operational advantage; it does not quantify downtime or savings.
Concentrated-latex energy estimate
The paper calculates that switching a rubber-glove factory to concentrated latex could reduce total energy consumption by 2%. This is a calculation based on the paper’s assumptions, not a measured energy saving from running 3D-PEP equipment in a factory. The dilution problem also shows why concentration must be balanced against atomization reliability and drying behavior.

How does spray deposition differ from conventional glove dipping?
Conventional dipping forms gloves by repeatedly immersing hand formers in liquid latex baths, with stages for coating, drying and curing. Spray deposition instead meters latex directly onto a temporary former. That changes where process control is concentrated.
- Deposition control: spray parameters, nozzle condition and robot or former motion determine how evenly the film is built.
- Material formulation: solids content must remain low enough for stable spraying but high enough to avoid excessive water removal and dripping.
- Drying demand: diluted feedstock carries more water into the process, potentially increasing drying requirements.
- Reliability: a blocked nozzle can interrupt deposition immediately, so cleaning, filtration and monitoring would be central production concerns.
- Evidence base: the printed glove has laboratory mechanical data, while the proposed factory performance remains modeled.
Spray deposition could eventually support digitally varied geometries or modular production, but the reported study does not demonstrate automatic custom sizing, high-speed commercial output or a cost advantage over dipping.
What does the result mean for latex allergy and product safety?
Natural-rubber latex remains commercially important, but naturally occurring latex proteins can trigger allergic reactions in susceptible users. Printing the glove rather than dipping it does not, by itself, remove those proteins or establish a lower allergy risk. Any future product would need material characterization, controlled manufacturing and user-safety testing appropriate to its intended market.
The 3D-PEP paper does not report a finished product for sale, a retailer listing or an approved medical device. A prototype’s visual similarity to a conventional glove should not be treated as proof of equivalent safety or labeling status.

What would have to happen before factory deployment?
A credible scale-up program would need to close several specific gaps rather than simply enlarge the laboratory sprayer:
- Nozzle reliability: demonstrate long-duration operation with high-solids latex, or define a dilution and filtration system that prevents clogging without unacceptable dripping.
- Thickness uniformity: measure film thickness around the fingers, palm, cuff and webbing across many gloves and production cycles.
- Drying and energy: quantify evaporation time, dryer capacity and energy use at the selected solids concentration.
- Yield and waste: record rejected gloves, overspray, drips, cleaning losses and material recovery on a continuous line.
- Mechanical repeatability: test many batches, not six specimens per comparison group, and track variation between nozzles, formers and shifts.
- Barrier performance: run validated puncture, leak, microbial and chemical-resistance tests for the claimed application.
- Regulatory pathway: establish the standards, quality controls, labeling and approvals required in each target market.
- Latex safety: characterize residual proteins, additives and any release-agent residues, then evaluate allergy and biocompatibility risks.
Until those measurements exist, the strongest defensible description is “laboratory proof of concept with a modeled scale-up pathway.”

What should readers conclude about 3D-printed latex gloves?
The 2026 work shows that spray deposition can produce a recognizable, freestanding natural-rubber glove with promising mechanical properties. It also exposes a practical manufacturing bottleneck: the formulation that contains enough rubber for efficient deposition can clog a small nozzle, while dilution trades that problem for dripping, non-uniformity and extra evaporation.
The technology is not shown to have failed, and the paper does not show that it has replaced dipping. The next milestone is sustained, measured production that proves nozzle uptime, thickness control, drying economics, yield, barrier performance and regulatory compliance. Until then, the printed glove is an encouraging prototype rather than a mass-market medical or examination product.

Can 3D-printed latex gloves be customized to an individual hand today?
The spray process could theoretically change the former geometry or deposition path, but the 2026 study did not demonstrate personalized sizing. Its reported glove was a fixed laboratory prototype, so custom-fit claims would require separate dimensional and repeatability evidence.
Why was ammonium hydroxide added to the latex formulation?
The study reports dilution with deionised water and ammonium hydroxide as more suitable for continuous deposition during development. It does not establish a universal concentration or show that the same formulation would be optimal for every nozzle, glove size or production speed.
Does pre-vulcanised latex need another curing stage after printing?
No additional post-vulcanisation was performed in the reported process because the feedstock was pre-vulcanised. A production line could still require controlled drying or other finishing steps, but the study does not define a factory-wide cure schedule.
Are 3D-printed latex gloves currently available to buy?
The cited study describes an experimental prototype and does not report commercial sales or a verified retail product. Any listing that uses the study as proof of an approved medical glove would be making a claim the paper does not support.
