A balanced team is not automatically one attacker, one tank, one healer, and a support character. It is a lineup with a clear way to make progress, enough complementary abilities to carry out that plan, and answers to the threats it is likely to face in its particular game mode.

Start by choosing the mode and a win condition, then give each character a job that supports it. Check whether your lineup can deal with common opponents, survive its weak matchups, and use its abilities in the right order. Finally, play the intended mode, identify a recurring failure, and change the slot or tactic that addresses it.

What makes a team balanced?

A balanced team has the tools to pursue its win condition without leaving a predictable hole that opponents or game mechanics can exploit. Balance is about how the characters work together, not whether the roster contains a prescribed number of role labels.

Two useful tests come from competitive Pokémon team building. Smogon’s getting-started guide describes offensive synergy: teammates help one another overcome opposing checks. It also describes defensive synergy: teammates cover one another’s weaknesses. These are complementary questions. A teammate might help break through an obstacle your main attacker cannot handle alone, while another gives the team a way to withstand a threat that would otherwise overwhelm it.

Variety can help, but variety for its own sake is not a plan. The Pokémon Company International’s Sword and Shield beginner guide advises using a range of Pokémon and moves rather than concentrating a team around one vulnerable type. The same underlying lesson applies more broadly: assess what characters can actually do, not just the category or label attached to them.

A lineup can be varied and still fail if its abilities compete for the same time or resources, if nobody can protect its main source of damage, or if it has no answer to a frequent threat. Conversely, a team with some overlap may be coherent when that overlap makes its main plan more reliable. The right question is not “Do I have one of every role?” but “Can these characters execute a plan, and what is most likely to stop them?”

How should I start building a team?

Choose the game mode and decide how the team is supposed to make progress before filling every slot. A story encounter, a competitive format, and a coordinated multiplayer match can reward different plans, so a lineup that works in one setting is not automatically balanced in another.

1. Name the mode and objective

Write down the immediate goal in plain language: for example, defeat a particular boss, win a match by controlling objectives, or create openings for a high-damage character. Then identify the most relevant obstacles: a known opponent, a game mechanic, limited resources, or the need to coordinate with other players. Keep the scope specific enough that it can guide a choice. “Be strong” does not tell you which weakness to cover; “keep the main attacker active through the encounter’s burst damage” does.

Competitive formats can change which threats matter. The Pokémon Company International’s official Scarlet and Violet Regulation Set H article discusses format-specific considerations such as speed control, varied offense, support tools, and answers to common tactics. Its named combinations belong to that particular format, not to every Pokémon game or to a current universal tier list. Treat format guides as a way to understand the threats and tools in the format they cover, then verify that they apply to the rules you are playing now.

2. Pick a core plan

Choose a character or pair that can carry out your objective. A “core” is simply the part of the lineup that gives you a reason to select the other members. It might be the primary damage source, a control strategy, a character whose abilities enable another, or a pair that covers a known challenge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before adding anyone, state what the core needs. It may need an opening to attack, a teammate who applies a status or element, protection while setting up, help with a difficult matchup, or access to a resource. If you cannot explain what a potential teammate contributes to the core or to a known gap, popularity or rarity alone is not a team-building reason.

3. Add jobs, not a fixed role quota

Consider what the lineup still needs: an enabler, protection or sustain, another way to apply pressure, or an answer to its largest uncovered threat. These are prompts, not mandatory slots. A character may do more than one useful job, and the value of that overlap depends on whether the team needs those contributions.

In its competitive Pokémon context, Smogon discusses jobs such as wallbreakers, setup sweepers, walls, and pivots. Those terms help describe how a character contributes to a particular strategy; they are not a universal template for every game. In Genshin Impact, KeqingMains’ team-building guide notes that a character can, for example, heal, buff teammates, and contribute energy. Counting that character only as “a healer” would miss the other jobs the lineup receives.

How do I check whether the lineup covers its weaknesses?

Audit offensive and defensive coverage separately. Ask what the team struggles to threaten or control, then ask what can threaten several members in return. A lineup needs both ways to make progress and a reasonable plan for the problems that interfere with that progress.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check what the team can answer

List the opponents, mechanics, or situations most likely to interrupt your plan. For each one, identify an actual response in the lineup: a move, ability, defensive option, control tool, or teammate who can take over when the primary choice is ineffective. A type label alone may not answer the question if that character’s usable moves cannot address the situation.

In Pokémon games, this means considering moves as well as Pokémon types. The official Sword and Shield guide’s advice about varied Pokémon and moves is useful for that specific context. In games where physical and special attacks are distinct, also ask whether the lineup depends too heavily on one kind of offense or one kind of defense. The official Regulation Set H guide gives mixed offense as a format-specific example, not a rule that every game or team must follow.

Look for shared vulnerabilities

A shared weakness is more concerning when the same threat can pressure several members and the team has no reliable way to respond. Ask whether a threatened character can switch, evade, interrupt, recover, receive protection, or be replaced by a teammate who handles that matchup better. The answer depends on the game’s rules: a Pokémon switch, a character rotation, and a team-based multiplayer substitution are not interchangeable mechanics.

Do not try to eliminate every possible weakness. That can produce a lineup that is theoretically broad but unable to execute a strong plan. Prioritize the gaps that matter in the chosen mode and that repeatedly block the team’s intended win condition. If the threat is rare, or another part of the plan reliably handles it, a dedicated counter may be less valuable than a character who improves the core.

Compare candidates for the same job

When two characters could fill the same slot, compare the contribution each makes to the lineup rather than asking only which one appears stronger in isolation. Weigh the job covered, offensive and defensive matchup coverage, survival or resource support, ability timing, time spent on the field, the threats in your chosen mode, and the investment you can afford. A less specialized character can be a better team fit if it also fills an unmet need; that is a decision framework, not a claim that one character is universally better.

How can I tell whether character abilities work together?

Check the interaction in play: the right teammate must be able to provide the effect the core needs, at a time when it can use that effect. A combination that works in theory can fail if it depends on an unavailable ability, incompatible timing, or more simultaneous field time than the lineup can provide.

Check the sequence, not just the character list

Write the intended order of actions in simple terms. Who applies the status, element, buff, setup, or protection? Who uses that opening? Does the effect remain available long enough, and can the next character act before it expires? If the game uses cooldowns, energy, charges, or another resource, account for how the lineup obtains and spends it. The relevant resource rules differ by game, so do not assume that a mechanic from one title transfers to another.

KeqingMains offers a Genshin Impact example: Xingqiu applies Hydro to help Hu Tao trigger Vaporize. That is an example of a specific reaction interaction in that game, not a general rule for other titles. The transferable test is to confirm that the first character can reliably provide the condition the second character needs.

Watch for timing and field-time conflicts

Some characters need time on the field to deliver their value. If two teammates both require substantial uninterrupted field time, the lineup may not have enough turns or active time to use both effectively. KeqingMains flags this as a team-building concern in its Genshin context. In other games, translate it into the appropriate resource: turns, action windows, cooldowns, or control of a shared objective.

Likewise, check whether the team can use important abilities when the plan calls for them. A character may fit the roster on paper but contribute little if its key move is repeatedly unavailable at the crucial moment. If the sequence falls apart, decide whether the issue is an ability-order problem, a resource problem, or a mismatch between characters before replacing the whole lineup.

Does every team need a tank and a healer?

No. A team needs enough survival to keep its plan functioning, but that does not always require a dedicated tank or healer. The right mix depends on the game, the challenge, and what other defensive tools the characters bring.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Healing, shields, and damage reduction can contribute in different ways, and a single character may provide more than one. Consider what actually causes the team to fail: damage it cannot recover from, a character being interrupted before acting, an effect that prevents the plan from working, or an encounter that demands quick progress. Choose protection that addresses that failure, rather than adding a role label by default.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Survival also has an opportunity cost: a slot devoted to sustain is a slot not used for another contribution. That does not make sustain less important; it means its value should be judged against what the rest of the lineup needs. If defensive tools are already sufficient, another damage or support contribution may better improve the plan. If characters repeatedly go down before they can do their jobs, survival is not sufficient yet.

How should I test and improve a team?

Play the lineup in the mode it is meant to handle, and use repeated failures to identify a specific change. The purpose is not to chase a perfect roster after one loss; it is to learn whether the plan works and where it breaks. Smogon recommends battling as a way to learn how a finished competitive team functions.

  1. Record the intended plan. Note how the team is supposed to make progress and what each member contributes. Keep this short enough to compare against what actually happens in a match or encounter.
  2. Play the target mode. A team built for a story challenge should be evaluated against that challenge; a competitive lineup should be evaluated under the format’s rules. In a coordinated multiplayer game, account for communication and teammate tactics rather than treating the selected characters as a complete plan by themselves.
  3. Identify the recurring failure. Look for a pattern, such as insufficient protection, a shared weakness, an ability that is unavailable when needed, an opponent the team cannot threaten, or teammates competing for the same time or resource.
  4. Change the smallest relevant piece. Adjust a slot, ability order, tactic, or allocation of resources to address the observed failure. Keeping the rest of the plan intact makes it easier to tell whether that adjustment helped.
  5. Recheck the trade-off. A new pick may fix one matchup while removing a useful contribution elsewhere. Confirm that the team still has a way to pursue its objective and that the change did not create a more serious gap.

If the lineup still fails, distinguish a team-structure issue from an execution issue. A missing answer to a common threat may call for a roster change. A compatible ability being used in the wrong order may call for a tactical adjustment instead. In multiplayer, poor coordination can prevent a sound lineup from carrying out its plan; talk through the intended tactic with teammates rather than assuming varied character selections will coordinate themselves.

How does the method change between games?

The diagnostic questions stay useful, but the answers and rules are game-specific. Do not transfer a team size, battle mechanic, reaction system, role taxonomy, or current threat list from one title to another.

Pokémon teams

For Pokémon, consider both Pokémon types and the moves the team can use, along with the rules of the game or competitive format. The official Sword and Shield beginner advice is about those games, while the Scarlet and Violet Regulation Set H article is tied to that named format. Neither should be mistaken for a universal or current-format ranking. If you want a printed reference for Sword and Shield, The Pokémon Company International’s 2019 Pokémon Sword & Pokémon Shield guide is a game-specific walkthrough with move and item lists and information about those games’ features; it is not a general team-building authority for other titles or formats.

Genshin Impact teams

For Genshin Impact, ask whether the intended reactions or other ability interactions can happen in the planned sequence, whether characters have the energy they need, and whether multiple characters compete for field time. KeqingMains’ guide gives examples in that game’s terms. Those details are not a template for titles with different combat and switching systems.

Coordinated multiplayer teams

In a multiplayer team game, composition is only one part of coordination. The lineup should support a shared plan, and players need to know who is creating an opening, who is protecting or following up, and what to do when the initial tactic fails. A varied selection of characters does not automatically mean the players are working together.

What should I do if I have limited upgrade resources?

Make investment decisions within the game’s own progression system instead of assuming every character must be equally developed. As a Genshin Impact-specific example, KeqingMains says concentrating early investment in one damage character can work. That is not a cross-game upgrade rule: other games may reward different distributions, and the correct choice depends on their progression mechanics and the mode you are preparing for.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before investing, ask whether the candidate has a defined job in the lineup, whether it addresses a real gap, and whether the team can make use of its abilities. If two candidates cover the same job, consider which one you can reasonably build and which provides extra value the team needs. Avoid spending resources solely because a character is rare or popular when its role in your plan is unclear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I build around my favorite character?

Yes, if the game lets you do so and you enjoy playing that character. Treat the favorite as the starting point, then choose teammates that support its strengths and cover the problems it has trouble handling.

How many defensive characters should a team have?

There is no universal count. A game’s damage model, encounter demands, and the defensive abilities bundled into each character determine how much protection is enough.

Can I use the same team for story mode and competitive matches?

Sometimes, but the two settings may demand different answers: a story encounter can be shaped by a specific boss or mechanic, while competitive play depends on its rules and likely opponents. Keep the core if it still works, but reassess the slots that answer those different demands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is team balance the same as having the highest-rated characters?

No. A strong individual character can still be a poor fit if its abilities do not support the plan or overlap with a teammate’s demands. Judge a pick by what it adds to the lineup and the gap it helps close.
