A two-second Facebook Messenger reply is an architecture problem, not a prompt-writing trick. Your Nepal e-commerce bot should verify and acknowledge Meta’s webhook immediately, place the event on a queue, and send a short first response from a fast path while catalog, language, payment, and order work continues asynchronously. Keep the first response under two seconds at your measured p95, then follow with product cards, delivery details, or payment instructions. This design also has to meet Meta’s Page-token and messaging-window rules, handle Nepali and Romanized Nepali, capture delivery addresses with local context, and reconcile eSewa payments against the order rather than trusting screenshots.
What does a two-second Messenger response actually require?
The timer should run from the moment your public webhook receives a Messenger event to the first outbound Send API call. It should not include the time needed to finish a large-language-model answer, check every warehouse, or complete payment. The reliable pattern is to return HTTP 200 immediately after authentication and enqueueing, then process the conversation in workers.

Send mark_seen and typing_on as soon as practical so the customer gets visible feedback. The first reply should be short and useful—such as a price, stock confirmation, or a request for a missing ward number. Turn typing off when that answer is sent. A second message can contain a product card, delivery estimate, or checkout link.
A practical latency budget
| Stage | Engineering target | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Signature verification and parsing | Under 100 ms | Validate the request signature, parse only required fields, and reject malformed payloads. |
| Cache lookup and deterministic FAQ | Under 300 ms | Answer common price, stock, delivery-zone, and COD-policy questions from a local cache. |
| Queue and network overhead | Under 500 ms | Use a nearby queue and persistent connections; avoid blocking the webhook on model inference. |
| First Send API call | Inside two seconds overall | Send the smallest actionable answer first, then continue asynchronously. |
These are engineering targets, not published Meta guarantees. Track both p50 and p95 from webhook receipt to first outbound send; a fast average can hide customers who regularly wait five or ten seconds.

How should the Messenger webhook be structured?
Expose a public HTTPS endpoint for Meta events. The endpoint should authenticate, normalize, deduplicate, enqueue, and acknowledge—nothing more that could delay the response.
- Verify the request. Check Meta’s challenge during subscription and validate each POST signature with your app secret (HMAC). Reject invalid signatures before parsing customer content.
- Normalize the event. Extract the Page ID, sender PSID, message ID, text, attachments, referral data, and timestamp into one internal schema.
- Deduplicate. Use Meta’s event or message ID as an idempotency key. Store it before processing so retries cannot create duplicate orders or duplicate payment requests.
- Acknowledge immediately. Return HTTP 200 after the event is durably queued. Do not wait for a model, inventory database, payment provider, or human agent.
- Process in workers. Load server-side conversation state, classify intent, retrieve catalog data, and choose a response path outside the webhook request.
If your queue is unavailable, return a controlled error and alert rather than silently dropping the event. A dead-letter queue should retain messages that repeatedly fail, with the original event ID and failure reason attached.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteKeep conversation state outside the model
Store the current intent, cart, address fields, payment status, last message ID, and handoff state in your database. Reconnects and webhook retries then resume from a known state. Pass the model only the minimum context needed to generate wording; do not place payment secrets, access tokens, or an entire customer record in a prompt.
What Meta access and policy requirements does a Nepal store need?
You need a Facebook Page connected to a Meta app, a public HTTPS webhook, a Page access token, the pages_messaging permission, and the recipient’s Page-scoped ID (PSID). The customer must have messaged the Page within Meta’s standard 24-hour messaging window or otherwise opted in to receive messages outside it.
Set up the event path
- Create or select the Page and Meta app, then configure the webhook callback URL and verify token.
- Subscribe the Page to messaging events and request the permissions required for your approved use case, including
pages_messaging. - Generate and securely store the Page access token. Rotate it on a schedule and after any suspected exposure.
- Use the PSID from the incoming event as the recipient in the Send API request; do not substitute a personal profile ID or phone number.
- Test text, quick replies, attachments, sender actions, and failure responses in a non-production Page before enabling orders.
Keep transactional order updates separate from promotional campaigns. Marketing messages require explicit opt-in, clear opt-out handling, and availability checks in the current Meta account and country. A customer who bought once has not automatically consented to every future promotion.
How do you make the fast path useful instead of just fast?
Route predictable requests to deterministic handlers before invoking a generative model. Cache product price, stock, delivery zones, and COD policy, and invalidate those entries whenever the catalog or an order changes.

Recommended intent tiers
- Tier 1, deterministic: price, stock, delivery fee, delivery area, return-policy summary, and order-status lookup.
- Tier 2, assisted: product matching, Romanized Nepali interpretation, bundle suggestions, and clarification questions.
- Tier 3, human: ambiguous addresses, complaints, refunds, high-value orders, suspected fraud, and repeated low-confidence messages.
For a Tier 2 request, send an immediate acknowledgement such as “I’m checking available sizes—one moment.” Then return the catalog result in a second message. Never claim stock, payment, or delivery confirmation until the relevant system has returned a current result.
Choose message formats deliberately
Use plain text for the first answer, quick replies for bounded choices such as “Kathmandu” or “Other city,” and templates or attachments for product cards and order summaries. Keep images and video lightweight because mobile connections vary. Include a “Talk to a person” option whenever confidence is low.
Can the bot understand Nepali, English, and Romanized Nepali?
Yes, if you design the classifier and test set for all three forms instead of translating only after a miss. Normalize casing, repeated characters, common spelling variants, and mixed-language phrases before classification. Keep the original text for the agent and for audit logs.
Build an intent dictionary around real shopping phrases
price kati ho→ product priceCOD ma advance dina parcha→ cash-on-delivery advance requirement- “कति दिनमा आउँछ?” or “delivery kati din?” → delivery timing
- “return kasari?” → return policy
- “stock cha?” → availability
Ask a clarification question when a short phrase could mean several things. For example, “size cha?” should identify the product and size rather than produce a generic availability claim. Measure intent accuracy separately for Nepali script, English, and Romanized Nepali; an aggregate score can conceal poor performance for one group.

How should address capture work in Nepal?
Use a guided, multi-turn form rather than one free-text address box. The International Trade Administration’s 2026 Nepal market guide reports that online activity is concentrated in Kathmandu and about six other cities, delivery often requires calling customers for directions, and cash payment at delivery remains common. Your flow should therefore collect a municipality, ward, landmark, phone number, and a final confirmation.
- Ask for the city or municipality and offer quick replies for your supported delivery zones.
- Collect the ward number and neighborhood or tole.
- Request a nearby landmark, building name, or recognizable route description.
- Capture a callback phone number and validate its length and country code.
- Repeat the complete address, delivery fee, estimated timing, and customer name for confirmation.
- Route unclear or out-of-zone addresses to a human before accepting payment or COD.
Do not infer a precise location from a landmark alone. Store the structured fields separately from the customer’s free-text directions so dispatchers can search and update them without rewriting the conversation.

How do you verify eSewa payment safely inside chat?
Use a hosted or redirected eSewa ePay step and treat Messenger as the conversation layer, not the settlement authority. eSewa’s developer documentation describes ePay as a secure environment for partner merchants to receive money from customers with eSewa accounts, but your server still has to validate every response.
- Create an order with a unique internal order ID and the exact payable amount.
- Generate the hosted payment request and send the customer the approved redirect or checkout action in Messenger.
- When eSewa returns a response, validate its signature before changing the order state.
- Reconcile the transaction UUID and amount with the internal order. Reject mismatches and flag them for review.
- If no response arrives within five minutes, call the eSewa status-check API rather than asking the customer to pay again.
- Only after a verified success mark the order paid and send a confirmation.
A screenshot posted in Messenger can start a manual review, but it is not authoritative settlement evidence. Keep payment credentials out of model prompts, encrypt sensitive records, and restrict staff access to the fields required for reconciliation.
How can the bot reduce cash-on-delivery cancellations?
Set expectations before the customer commits. Show any required advance, delivery fee, estimated timing, and cancellation rule in the confirmation step, not after dispatch.
Use a structured confirmation message
Send one reviewable summary containing item names, quantities, total price, delivery fee, payment method, municipality, ward, landmark, and callback number. Ask the customer to choose “Confirm,” “Edit address,” or “Cancel.” Save the confirmation event and timestamp.
Use risk-based human checks
- Call or manually verify high-value COD orders.
- Escalate repeated cancellations, conflicting phone numbers, and incomplete landmarks.
- Offer a small advance or verified digital payment when your policy requires it, stating the amount plainly.
- Send a reminder before dispatch and a final delivery notification inside the allowed messaging window.
Measure COD conversion from confirmed order to successful delivery, not merely the number of chats that selected COD. Segment cancellations by city, product, address quality, and whether an advance was collected.
What reliability and security controls are essential?
Production readiness depends on failure handling as much as response speed. Use retries with exponential backoff for transient Send API and catalog failures, circuit breakers for unhealthy dependencies, and a dead-letter queue for events that cannot be processed automatically.

- Webhook protection: HTTPS, HMAC signature validation, rate limiting, secret rotation, and least-privilege tokens.
- Duplicate safety: idempotency keys for events, orders, and payment requests.
- Catalog freshness: cache TTLs plus explicit invalidation on price, stock, or policy changes.
- Observability: structured logs with correlation IDs, dashboards for p50/p95 latency, Send API errors, duplicate events, payment mismatches, and handoff rate.
- Privacy: minimize personal data in prompts and logs, define retention periods, and restrict access to address and payment records.
Log message IDs and internal order IDs, but redact payment credentials and unnecessary message text. Alert when p95 latency crosses the two-second target, when duplicate-order prevention fires unusually often, or when payment mismatches rise.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you test the two-second claim?
Load-test the complete path with realistic bursts, slow catalog responses, duplicate events, and delayed payment callbacks. A vendor’s “2 Seconds First Response Time” statement is a marketing claim, not an independent benchmark; validate your own deployment under Nepal-relevant network conditions.
Track these comparison metrics
| Metric | Why it matters | Pass condition to define |
|---|---|---|
| p95 first-response latency | Shows the experience of slower customers. | Set an internal target at or below two seconds. |
| Duplicate-event safety | Prevents repeated replies and orders. | No duplicate order for one event ID. |
| Nepali/Romanized-Nepali intent accuracy | Reveals language-specific failures. | Report each language form separately. |
| Catalog freshness | Avoids stale price and stock claims. | Define and monitor cache invalidation delay. |
| Payment reconciliation correctness | Protects revenue and customer trust. | Every paid order matches UUID and amount. |
| COD conversion | Connects chat behavior to delivered orders. | Track confirmed-to-delivered rate. |
| Human-handoff rate | Shows where automation is unsafe or weak. | Review high-volume intents and unresolved cases. |
| Meta-policy compliance | Reduces blocked messaging and account risk. | Audit consent, windows, and promotional sends. |
What commonly breaks, and how do you recover?
The webhook times out or Meta retries events
Move every network call and model invocation after the queue write. Return 200 only after durable enqueueing, and use event IDs to make retries harmless.
The bot sends stale stock or price
Shorten cache lifetime for volatile fields and add invalidation hooks from the catalog or order system. If freshness cannot be confirmed, say that a human is checking rather than inventing availability.
An eSewa callback is missing
Keep the order pending, run the status check after five minutes, and expose a support path. Never ask for a second payment solely because Messenger did not receive the first callback.
The address is ambiguous
Ask for municipality, ward, landmark, and callback number in separate turns. Escalate when the customer cannot provide a dispatchable location; do not let a language model silently guess.

Messages fall outside the allowed window
Stop promotional or non-consensual sends, record the customer’s opt-in status, and use an approved template or customer-initiated conversation when eligible. Separate order updates from campaign tooling so a marketing workflow cannot accidentally message every buyer.
What is the safest rollout plan?
- Launch deterministic FAQs, catalog lookup, address capture, and human handoff first.
- Add Romanized Nepali classification and measure errors by language form.
- Introduce eSewa redirects with signature and amount reconciliation in a sandbox or controlled cohort.
- Enable COD confirmations, reminders, and cancellation analytics.
- Only then expand generative product assistance, guarded by confidence thresholds and circuit breakers.
At every stage, keep a manual override and replayable event log. The two-second objective is valuable only when a fast reply is also correct, policy-compliant, and safe to convert into an order.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Messenger bot reply in two seconds if it uses a large language model?
It can, but the model cannot sit on the webhook’s acknowledgement path. Send an immediate acknowledgement or cached answer, then let a worker generate the richer response; enforce a timeout and hand off when the model is slow or uncertain.
What should happen when a customer writes in Nepali script and English together?
Preserve the original message, normalize it for classification, and answer in the language form the customer appears to prefer. Offer a quick language choice when confidence is low instead of repeatedly translating the same request.
Is a payment screenshot enough to release a COD or prepaid order?
No. A screenshot is useful for triage but can be altered or unrelated to the order. Release only after the payment provider’s signed response or status API confirms the matching transaction and amount.
How long should Messenger conversation data be stored?
Choose a retention period based on order, tax, support, and privacy obligations, then delete or anonymize chat content that no longer serves one of those purposes. Keep operational IDs and audit records separate from full message text where possible.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should delivery updates and promotions use the same bot flow?
They should share infrastructure but use separate consent and policy checks. Transactional updates follow the order state, while promotions require explicit opt-in, opt-out handling, and an eligible messaging window.
