A browser VPN extension protects only traffic handled by that browser; a full VPN app can route traffic from the entire device. That difference determines whether downloads, messaging clients, system updates, other browsers, and background services are covered. An extension is usually the easier choice for quick, browser-only IP masking. A full app is the safer fit for public Wi-Fi, non-browser applications, and protection against leaks when a VPN connection drops.
Neither option makes you completely anonymous. The provider can still be a position of trust, browser settings can override VPN DNS behavior, and an extension can have protocol and startup limitations that a system-wide app avoids.

What is the difference between a browser VPN extension and a full VPN app?
A browser extension is generally a browser-scoped proxy. It changes the IP address websites see and can protect traffic generated inside the browser, but it does not automatically cover the rest of the computer. A full VPN app installs at the operating-system level and can route internet traffic from the device through its VPN connection.
| Issue | Browser VPN extension | Full VPN app |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic scope | Traffic handled by the browser where the extension is installed | Internet traffic entering and leaving the device while the app is connected |
| Other browsers | Not covered unless each browser has its own compatible extension | Covered by the device tunnel |
| Standalone apps | Not covered, including separate messengers, torrent clients, and many background services | Covered, subject to the app’s routing and exclusion settings |
| Downloads | Browser-initiated traffic can use the extension; a separate download client cannot | Covered by the device tunnel |
| DNS behavior | Depends on browser DNS settings and how the extension handles requests | Usually controls device DNS, but browser DNS-over-HTTPS can still take priority |
| Kill switch | Can block or control browser traffic only, if the extension provides the feature | Can block the device’s network connection when the VPN drops |
| Setup | Install in a supported browser, sign in, and connect | Install an operating-system app, grant network permissions, and connect |
| Performance and compatibility | Less intrusive outside the browser, but browser proxy behavior and features can cause site-specific problems | More comprehensive, with possible interference with local networking, applications, or another proxy |
Mozilla describes the distinction directly: “A proxy only protects what you do in your browser, whereas a VPN protects all your traffic.” Proton VPN uses similar wording, saying its extension protects “exclusively traffic inside your browser,” while its apps protect all internet traffic entering and leaving the device.

Is a browser VPN extension enough for privacy?
It is enough when your privacy goal is limited to activity in one browser and you accept that every other application remains outside the protected path. It is not enough when your threat model includes non-browser traffic, connection drops, or a device-wide exposure on an untrusted network.
When an extension is a reasonable fit
- You want websites to see the VPN server’s IP address instead of your normal browser IP.
- Your sensitive activity stays inside one supported browser.
- You do not need to protect a second browser, desktop messenger, game launcher, updater, or other application.
- You want a quick, per-browser connection without changing routing for the rest of the computer.
- You can tolerate checking browser DNS, WebRTC, and startup behavior yourself.
When it is not enough
- You use public Wi-Fi and want protection for the whole device, not just one browser tab.
- You download through a standalone client or use a separate messaging application.
- You need system updates, background services, or every browser to use the VPN.
- You require a kill switch that stops all network traffic if the tunnel fails.
- You cannot reliably control browser DNS-over-HTTPS or other browser features that may bypass proxy settings.
How does a browser VPN extension route traffic?
The extension changes the browser’s proxy path. Websites reached through that browser can see the proxy or VPN server’s public IP address, and the connection between your device and the provider can be protected according to the provider’s implementation. Traffic that never enters the extension’s browser path is outside its scope.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What the extension normally covers
Pages, scripts, media, and other requests made by the browser generally follow the extension’s proxy configuration. If you install the extension only in Firefox, a different browser does not inherit that protection. A browser download started through the browser is normally part of that browser session; a separate download manager is not.
What can bypass the extension?
Proton documents several limitations that are easy to miss:
- Browser-controlled protocols, including some embedded email behavior, can bypass the extension.
- Data may be sent before the extension finishes loading, creating a startup window.
- Experimental browser features can ignore proxy settings.
- Each extension instance uses a separate HTTPS connection. Proton notes that this can be somewhat more exposed to fingerprinting than its full app.
These are browser limitations rather than proof that every extension is insecure. They do mean that an extension should be treated as a selective proxy, not as an invisible replacement for device-wide routing.
How does a full VPN app protect the device?
A full app creates a device-level VPN connection and routes traffic from applications through it while the connection is active. That includes other browsers, standalone messengers, torrent clients, background services, and system activity that would not pass through a browser extension.

Mozilla’s privacy documentation makes the boundary explicit for its browser feature: it proxies Firefox traffic to hide the IP address from visited sites and to prevent the network provider from seeing which servers Firefox connects to, but it does not proxy traffic from other applications. A full app is designed to operate at that broader device level.
What a full app still cannot guarantee
Device-wide routing does not remove the need to trust the VPN provider. The provider can observe or technically access connection metadata according to its architecture and logging policy, so read the current privacy policy and retention terms rather than treating the word “VPN” as a guarantee of anonymity.
Routing can also be changed deliberately. Split tunneling, exclusions, local-network exceptions, and application-specific settings may send selected traffic outside the tunnel. Check those controls before assuming that every process is covered.
Can a browser VPN stop DNS leaks?
Sometimes, but the answer depends on the browser’s resolver settings. Mozilla says Firefox DNS queries can be routed through a VPN extension, while also warning that Firefox’s DNS-over-HTTPS setting can take priority over the resolver configured in the VPN application. Proton’s setup guidance likewise warns that Firefox may need additional configuration to prevent DNS leakage when its extension is used.

Why DNS-over-HTTPS changes the result
DNS-over-HTTPS sends name lookups through the browser’s own encrypted resolver. That can be good for protecting DNS from the local network, but it may bypass the resolver path the VPN provider expects. The browser can therefore use a different DNS service even while the extension shows as connected.
How to check your configuration
- Identify which DNS-over-HTTPS mode your browser is using.
- Read the VPN provider’s instructions for the specific browser extension and operating system.
- Check whether the extension claims to route DNS requests or merely proxies web traffic.
- Use a reputable DNS-leak test while connected, then repeat it with the extension disconnected to compare the resolver addresses.
- After changing browser DNS settings, restart the browser and test again; a setting that takes effect only after restart can create a temporary false result.
A full app generally has more control over device DNS, but browser-level DNS-over-HTTPS can still take precedence. Device-wide coverage is broader, not automatically immune to application-level resolver choices.

What is the difference between extension and app leak protection?
The main differences are DNS control, WebRTC behavior, startup timing, and what happens when the connection drops.
WebRTC leaks
WebRTC can expose network information through browser APIs even when ordinary web requests use a proxy. Some extensions provide a WebRTC leak-protection control; NordVPN documents this feature for its browser extension. Availability and behavior vary by browser and provider, so check the extension’s settings rather than assuming WebRTC is handled.

An extension may not be active at the instant the browser starts. Proton warns that data can be sent before the extension finishes loading. If your first browser requests must use the VPN, connect the extension before opening sensitive pages and avoid assuming that a remembered login means the proxy is already active.
Drop leaks and kill switches
A kill switch is specifically a drop-leak control. Mozilla defines an app kill switch as blocking the device’s entire network connection when the VPN drops, preventing the local IP from being exposed; its app kill switch is enabled by default on supported operating systems.
An extension’s kill switch, when available, can only block or control traffic inside that browser. It cannot stop a separate messenger, updater, or another browser from reconnecting directly. NordVPN documents a browser kill switch for its extension, but that should not be confused with a device-wide kill switch in a full app.
Which option is better for public Wi-Fi, downloads, and other common uses?
Choose based on what must be protected, not on whether the interface says “VPN.” The following map uses coverage rather than brand preference.

| Use case | Better default | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Reading or searching in one browser | Extension | It can mask the browser-visible IP without affecting other applications. |
| Public Wi-Fi across a laptop or phone | Full app | Other apps, background services, and every browser need the same device-level protection. |
| Standalone messaging client | Full app | The client’s traffic does not pass through a browser extension. |
| BitTorrent or another separate transfer client | Full app | Provider documentation lists torrent clients among traffic excluded from its browser extension. |

| Browser-specific streaming or geo-access | Either, tested per service | Coverage, proxy detection, browser compatibility, and provider support differ by service and browser. |
Are browser extensions easier or faster than full VPN apps?
Extensions usually require less setup and have a smaller effect outside the browser. You install one in a supported browser, sign in, choose a location, and connect. A full app requires operating-system installation and network permissions, but it gives you centralized routing and controls that apply beyond the browser.
Compatibility trade-offs
An extension depends on the browser’s proxy APIs, DNS choices, privacy features, and release changes. Experimental features may ignore proxy settings, and a browser update can change how an extension behaves. A full app avoids many browser-specific limitations but can conflict with another VPN, proxy, firewall, corporate network policy, or local service.
Performance trade-offs
Neither format has a universal speed advantage. An extension may leave non-browser traffic untouched, which can make the computer feel less affected outside the browser. A full app encrypts and routes more traffic, adding more work and distance for more applications, but it also avoids the fragmented behavior of separate browser proxy connections. Provider infrastructure, server distance, browser workload, and local network quality usually matter more than the label “extension” or “app.”
Do browser extensions and VPN apps make you anonymous?
No. They can hide your normal IP address from websites and, depending on the configuration, hide destinations from the local network or internet provider, but they do not erase account identifiers, cookies, browser fingerprints, or information you voluntarily submit.
Mozilla’s Firefox privacy notice says its proxy feature does not, by itself, make browsing fully anonymous. Proton also notes that separate HTTPS connections used by extension instances can be somewhat more exposed to fingerprinting than its full app. Treat both products as privacy tools with defined coverage, not as an anonymity guarantee.
Provider trust still matters
When traffic is routed through a provider, that provider becomes a critical trust point. Compare the current privacy policy, logging explanation, jurisdictional disclosures, security controls, and account requirements. A technically broad app with an unclear data policy may be a worse privacy choice than a narrowly used extension from a provider whose practices you understand.
Best Value
How should I choose between an extension and a full app?
Use this decision sequence before installing anything:
- List the traffic that matters. Include every browser, messenger, transfer client, game, updater, and background service that needs protection.
- Decide whether a drop must block the whole device. If exposing the local IP during a brief outage is unacceptable, require a device-level kill switch.
- Check DNS requirements. Review browser DNS-over-HTTPS behavior and the provider’s extension instructions before relying on the connection.
- Check browser-specific features. Confirm support for your browser, WebRTC controls, exclusions, and any browser kill switch.
- Check service compatibility. Streaming and geo-blocked services can behave differently in different browsers and applications, so test the exact service you use.
- Read the provider policy. Coverage does not compensate for logging or retention practices you consider unacceptable.
If all important activity is browser-based and you want selective routing, start with an extension. If the requirement is “protect this device,” use a full app and verify its kill-switch, DNS, and exclusion settings.

Work from the narrowest failure to the broadest. First confirm that the extension is enabled in the browser and that the browser is using the intended location. Then check DNS-over-HTTPS, WebRTC controls, and whether the affected request used a browser-controlled protocol or an experimental feature.
- Disconnect and reconnect the extension or app, then repeat the test after the connection indicator is fully active.
- Test the same destination in the protected browser and in an unprotected application to confirm whether the problem is scope rather than a failed tunnel.
- Review browser DNS settings and apply the provider’s documented configuration.
- Disable or adjust browser features that can bypass proxy settings, if your privacy requirements allow it.
- For a full app, inspect split-tunnel, exclusion, local-network, and kill-switch settings.
- Do not run two routing layers casually. NordVPN warns that using its extension and application at the same time can cause connection interference.
If a site still fails, the problem may be service compatibility or proxy detection rather than an IP leak. Test another browser location and compare behavior without changing more settings than necessary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a VPN extension and a full VPN app at the same time?
You can, but two proxy or tunnel layers may interfere with each other. A documented example is NordVPN’s warning that running its extension and application together can cause connection problems. If you need browser-specific routing on top of a device tunnel, test the exact browser and service and keep a quick way to disable one layer.
Do browser VPN extensions protect BitTorrent clients?
No. A torrent client is a separate application, so its traffic is outside a browser extension’s scope. Use a full device VPN if that client must use the VPN path, and verify that the app’s exclusions and kill-switch settings do not silently bypass it.
Recommended Free Tools
Why can an embedded email feature bypass my browser VPN?
Some browser-controlled protocols do not follow the extension’s ordinary proxy path. Proton specifically lists embedded email behavior as an example of traffic that can bypass an extension, so a connected indicator is not proof that every protocol initiated from a page is tunneled.
Should I test DNS with the extension connected and disconnected?
Yes. Comparing both states helps reveal whether the resolver addresses change as expected and whether Firefox’s DNS-over-HTTPS setting is taking priority. Repeat the check after browser restarts or configuration changes because startup timing can affect the first requests.
