Short answer: The August 18, 2026 Motley Fool comparison argued that Nvidia was slightly cheaper than Broadcom when measured with forward price-to-earnings ratios and a next-year earnings estimate. That is a dated opinion, not a freshly calculated valuation for October 2026. The article did not publish a stable, matched-date table of both companies’ exact multiples, so its conclusion should be treated as a framework rather than a precise current buy signal.

The practical question is whether Nvidia’s broad GPU platform and software ecosystem justify its market valuation, or whether Broadcom’s rapidly expanding custom-AI-chip business can deliver enough profit growth to make its shares the better bargain. The answer depends on the share prices and earnings estimates used on the same date, plus how much execution risk an investor is willing to accept.

What did the August 2026 comparison actually conclude?

Keithen Drury, a contributing technology analyst at The Motley Fool, compared Broadcom and Nvidia with forward P/E measures and then looked at the companies through a next-year earnings lens. His conclusion was explicit: “Still, Nvidia is slightly cheaper than Broadcom.” In the article’s framing, that made Nvidia the better bargain for stock investors.

That sentence needs two qualifications. First, it describes Drury’s assessment in an article published on August 18, 2026; it is not an objective ranking that remains valid regardless of later share-price moves or estimate changes. Second, the article’s text did not provide exact, matched-date P/E numbers for both companies. Its charts supplied visual comparisons, but a reader cannot reproduce a precise current multiple from the written figures alone.

As of October 25, 2026, a genuinely current comparison would require both stocks’ prices and consensus earnings estimates collected on the same date and calculated against the same fiscal-year convention. Without that paired data, the defensible takeaway is narrower: the August article viewed Nvidia as slightly cheaper on its selected forward-earnings comparison.

Why does the valuation method matter?

Forward P/E divides a company’s share price by an estimate of future earnings per share. It is useful for fast-growing semiconductor companies because today’s earnings may be far below the profits investors expect after new products ramp. It is also highly sensitive to the forecast period, the analyst estimate chosen, and the date of the share price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forward P/E is only comparable when the inputs match

A fair Broadcom-versus-Nvidia calculation should use closing prices from the same trading day, diluted EPS estimates from the same estimate set, and the same horizon—for example, the next four quarters or the next full fiscal year. Mixing Broadcom’s next fiscal year with Nvidia’s calendar-year estimate can make one stock appear cheaper simply because the denominator covers a different earnings period.

Why a small difference can disappear quickly

When two high-growth stocks are described as “slightly” different on forward P/E, ordinary market movement can reverse the ranking. A share-price change, an earnings-estimate revision, a product-delay announcement, or a stronger-than-expected quarter can alter the ratio without either company becoming fundamentally different. A small spread therefore should not be presented as a durable margin of safety.

What the August article did not establish

The article did not establish a verified, current consensus table, a single named analyst dataset, or exact forward multiples that can be carried into late October. It also did not settle the companies’ relative margins with a matched set of figures. Those omissions do not invalidate its argument, but they limit how precisely its bargain claim can be repeated.

How is Broadcom’s AI business changing the comparison?

Broadcom is not competing with Nvidia through the same product model. Its AI semiconductor growth is centered on customer-specific chips—often called custom accelerators or ASICs—designed around the requirements of large customers. That approach can produce substantial revenue when a customer commits to a deployment, but it makes the forecast dependent on a smaller number of programs, delivery schedules, and purchasing decisions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reported Q2 AI semiconductor revenue

The August article reported $10.8 billion of Broadcom AI semiconductor revenue in its second quarter. Annualized mechanically, that pace would be just over $40 billion. The annualization is an illustration of the quarterly run rate, not a report of realized full-year revenue and not a guarantee that every quarter will match it.

Management’s then-current 2027 expectation

The same article relayed management’s expectation of more than $100 billion in AI semiconductor sales for 2027. That was a forward outlook. It depended on customers purchasing and deploying the planned custom chips, so it should not be treated as booked revenue or as an assured result.

A later guidance figure

A September 3, 2026 compilation of Broadcom earnings-call statements reproduced management guidance of $58 billion in AI revenue for fiscal 2026 and approximately $115 billion for fiscal 2027. Those numbers are management’s outlook as reproduced by a secondary financial source, not independently audited results in that compilation. They also use fiscal-year labels, while the August article’s quarterly figure refers to a specific reported quarter; the figures should not be blended as if they were the same measurement.

What makes Broadcom’s custom-chip opportunity attractive?

Custom silicon can be economically attractive when a major customer needs a design optimized for a particular workload, power envelope, networking setup, or data-center architecture. A successful design win can create a multi-year stream of chip shipments and related infrastructure demand. Broadcom’s reported AI figures show why investors have begun treating this business as a major growth engine rather than a niche operation.

The benefit of customer-specific demand

A custom-chip program starts with a defined customer requirement instead of a one-size-fits-many product. If the customer’s deployment expands, chip volumes can rise with it. That visibility can support a strong revenue outlook before every unit is delivered.

The cost of concentration and commitment risk

The same structure creates concentration risk. Revenue depends on a limited set of customers proceeding with their plans, accepting the design, and ordering on schedule. A delayed data center, a changed internal architecture, or a canceled program could affect the expected ramp more sharply than a slowdown spread across a broad customer base.

Forecast execution is the central test

Broadcom’s opportunity is therefore not just a question of whether demand for AI chips exists. Management must complete designs, manufacture and package the parts, support deployment, and convert customer commitments into recognized revenue. The August article identified that execution requirement as the key risk behind its optimistic outlook.

Why does Nvidia still command a powerful position?

Nvidia’s advantage, as described in the comparison, is breadth. Its general-purpose GPU platform is used for AI training and inference across many customers and workloads, and its software and networking ecosystem makes the platform more than a standalone chip. That combination can help customers move from experimentation to production without designing every element themselves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GPU flexibility versus a tailored ASIC

A GPU platform can serve a wide range of models and applications. A customer-specific ASIC may deliver advantages for a defined workload, but it is less adaptable when the workload changes. The relevant trade-off is not that one product is universally superior; it is whether a buyer values broad programmability or the efficiency of a specialized design.

The ecosystem effect

Software libraries, developer familiarity, networking and established deployment tools can reinforce Nvidia’s position. They may reduce the friction of adopting new hardware and increase the cost of switching to an alternative platform. That ecosystem value is difficult to capture in a single P/E ratio, yet it can influence how long Nvidia sustains premium growth.

The article’s growth expectation

The August comparison reported an expectation of 43% growth for Nvidia. The underlying consensus estimate and forecast horizon were not independently validated in the available material, so the figure should be quoted as the article’s reported expectation rather than as a verified forecast. Investors should identify the estimate period before using it in a valuation model.

What do Broadcom’s reported financial results add to the picture?

A secondary financial page attributed the following trailing-twelve-month figures to SEC filings for the period through August 2, 2026. They provide scale and cash-generation context for Broadcom, but they are not a matched comparison with Nvidia and do not replace a forward valuation analysis.

Broadcom metric Trailing-twelve-month figure Period and source qualification
Revenue $84.7 billion TTM through August 2, 2026; reported by StockTitan and attributed there to SEC filings
Net income $36.4 billion TTM through August 2, 2026; reported by StockTitan and attributed there to SEC filings
Diluted EPS $7.84 TTM through August 2, 2026; reported by StockTitan and attributed there to SEC filings
Free cash flow $39.4 billion TTM through August 2, 2026; reported by StockTitan and attributed there to SEC filings

These figures are historical results through a specified date. They do not prove that Broadcom will achieve the $58 billion or approximately $115 billion AI-revenue outlooks, and they cannot be used to infer Nvidia’s multiples. Keeping reported results, management guidance and analyst expectations in separate boxes prevents an apparently precise comparison from mixing incompatible numbers.

Which company has the harder execution task?

Broadcom’s execution burden is concentrated in the conversion of customer-specific programs into volume shipments. Nvidia’s challenge is different: it must continue expanding a large platform while maintaining demand across training and inference and preserving the software and networking advantages that support adoption.

Broadcom: delivery against customer plans

  • Design wins must reach production rather than remain engineering projects.
  • Customers must purchase at the pace assumed in the outlook.
  • Manufacturing, packaging and system integration must support the projected ramp.
  • A small number of large programs can make quarterly results more sensitive to timing.

Nvidia: sustaining a broad platform

  • Demand must remain strong across multiple AI workloads and customers.
  • New GPU generations must provide enough performance or efficiency to justify upgrades.
  • The software and networking ecosystem must continue to attract developers and operators.
  • Growth expectations must hold even as the revenue base becomes larger.

The August article’s relative-risk judgment was that Broadcom’s forecast relied more directly on customer purchases and delivery of a fast-growing custom-chip business, while Nvidia’s growth might be underprojected. That is the author’s opinion, not a measured probability of failure for either company.

Is Nvidia still the better bargain in October 2026?

The available evidence cannot establish that as a current fact. The only explicit bargain verdict is the August 18 article’s statement that Nvidia was slightly cheaper under its forward-P/E and next-year-earnings framing. Since then, any change in share prices, earnings estimates, fiscal-year assumptions or business guidance could have changed the ranking.

Investors who want a current answer should rebuild the comparison rather than copy the old conclusion. A stock can become cheaper because its price falls, because analysts raise earnings estimates, or because both move in opposite directions. Each case carries a different interpretation, and a lower P/E by itself does not reveal which one occurred.

How can you recalculate the comparison correctly?

Use a same-date worksheet that keeps the market data, estimates and fiscal periods consistent. The following process avoids the most common apples-to-oranges errors.

  1. Choose one valuation date. Record the official closing share price for Broadcom and Nvidia on that date. Do not pair one stock’s current price with the other stock’s price from an earlier article.
  2. Choose one earnings horizon. Decide whether the denominator is the next four quarters, the next fiscal year or another clearly defined period. Apply the same convention to both companies.
  3. Use the same estimate source. Pull diluted EPS estimates from one consensus set or from clearly identified analyst estimates. Record when the estimates were published because forecasts change.
  4. Calculate each forward P/E. Divide the share price by the selected forward EPS estimate. Keep the unrounded values in the worksheet and round only for presentation.
  5. Check fiscal calendars. Note the fiscal-year end and the months covered by each estimate. A “next year” estimate can represent different calendar periods for the two companies.
  6. Stress-test the denominator. Recalculate using a lower and higher earnings case. This shows whether a small estimate revision reverses the apparent bargain.
  7. Read the business assumptions behind the estimates. For Broadcom, inspect the assumed custom-AI-chip ramp and customer commitments. For Nvidia, inspect the assumed GPU demand, product cycle and ecosystem-driven growth.

That calculation can answer which stock is cheaper on a selected model. It still cannot determine which company will deliver the better return, because returns also depend on future estimate revisions, valuation changes and the price investors pay later.

What should investors compare beyond P/E?

Forward P/E is the article’s central metric, but a decision based on one ratio can miss the reasons the ratio exists. Four additional checks make the comparison more informative.

Revenue quality and visibility

Ask whether projected revenue is diversified across many customers and products or concentrated in a few large programs. Broadcom’s AI outlook is tied to customer-specific designs, so the quality of the revenue forecast depends on the status and timing of those programs. Nvidia’s platform spans more workloads, but its forecast still depends on sustained spending by customers.

Growth relative to the multiple

A higher P/E can be reasonable if earnings are expected to grow faster or remain more durable. A lower P/E can signal opportunity, but it can also signal that the market expects slower growth or greater execution risk. Compare the growth estimate and its time horizon with the multiple instead of treating P/E as a standalone score.

Cash generation and reinvestment

Historical free cash flow indicates what a company generated during the measured period; it does not guarantee future cash flow. Investors should examine how much cash must be reinvested in research, manufacturing commitments, acquisitions or infrastructure to achieve the forecast. The available Broadcom figures show substantial trailing free cash flow, but no matched Nvidia cash-flow table was established for this comparison.

Estimate revision risk

The more a valuation depends on distant growth, the more sensitive it is to revisions. Broadcom’s 2027 AI outlook is several reporting periods ahead, while Nvidia’s reported 43% expectation also lacks a clearly stated horizon in the comparison. Write down the exact period and assumptions before deciding that one forecast is more credible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When might Broadcom be the more compelling choice?

Broadcom could look more attractive to an investor who believes its custom-chip programs will convert into the management outlook and who values the possibility of a large AI revenue ramp from customer-specific designs. In that scenario, the market may be underestimating the durability or scale of the ASIC opportunity.

That thesis requires evidence of execution: customer programs progressing, shipments arriving on schedule, and reported revenue catching up with the guidance. A low apparent multiple based on optimistic estimates would not be enough if those estimates are repeatedly pushed out.

When might Nvidia be the more compelling choice?

Nvidia could look more attractive to an investor who believes its GPU, software and networking ecosystem will keep demand broad and that consensus growth expectations are too conservative. That is close to the August article’s argument: Nvidia was slightly cheaper on the selected forward comparison, and its growth may have been underprojected.

The counterpoint is that a broad platform can still face periods of slower growth, competitive pressure or customer spending changes. Nvidia’s bargain case therefore depends on both the valuation input and the durability of the ecosystem advantage, not simply on the existence of a large AI market.

What is the most balanced way to use the August article?

Use it as a dated starting point, not as a current price target. Its useful contribution is the distinction between two AI-chip models: Broadcom’s customer-specific accelerator opportunity and Nvidia’s broad GPU platform. Its limitation is that the written article does not provide the exact matched-date multiples needed to verify a precise late-2026 valuation.

A disciplined reader can preserve the article’s conclusion while updating the inputs. Record the August 18 date beside the statement that Nvidia was slightly cheaper, then perform a new same-date calculation using current prices, a clearly identified consensus source and the same fiscal horizon. Keep management guidance, analyst expectations and reported results labeled separately throughout.

Bottom line: which stock was called the better bargain?

The August 18, 2026 Motley Fool article called Nvidia slightly cheaper than Broadcom on a forward-P/E and next-year-earnings comparison, making Nvidia its better-bargain choice. That verdict is tied to the article’s date and assumptions. Broadcom’s reported AI revenue and ambitious fiscal 2026–2027 outlook make it a serious alternative, but the custom-chip forecast carries customer and delivery risk. A current investor decision requires a fresh, matched-date calculation rather than treating the August opinion as an October valuation fact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can forward P/E be misleading for semiconductor stocks?

Yes. Semiconductor earnings can move sharply with product cycles, customer inventories and estimate revisions, so the denominator may change faster than the share price. A useful check is to test several earnings cases and inspect whether the valuation conclusion survives a modest forecast change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do Broadcom and Nvidia’s fiscal calendars matter in a comparison?

Their fiscal periods do not necessarily cover the same months. A next-fiscal-year EPS estimate for one company may represent a different economic period than the other company’s estimate, so the labels and covered dates should be recorded before dividing price by EPS.

Does Broadcom’s reported AI revenue equal its total custom-chip revenue?

Not necessarily. The figures cited are described as AI semiconductor revenue or AI revenue under the relevant guidance; they should not automatically be relabeled as every form of custom silicon or as total company revenue. Use the company’s own category definition when reviewing a filing or earnings call.

Is the reported 43% Nvidia growth expectation a company forecast?

No. In the August comparison it was presented as an analyst expectation, and the available material does not establish the exact consensus source or forecast horizon. It should therefore be treated as a quoted market estimate rather than management guidance.

What information is needed to make an up-to-date Broadcom-versus-Nvidia valuation table?

You need both closing share prices from one date, diluted EPS estimates from the same source, and a common forecast horizon. Add the fiscal-year periods covered, the estimate publication date and a sensitivity range so a small revision does not create a false sense of precision.
