The much-discussed “$9,800 Pokémon release” is not a new game or card set. It is SGC’s K24 Gholdengo, a roughly 6-centimeter collectible cast from about 15 grams of 24-karat gold and sold in a glass case. SGC lists the price at ¥1,540,000 including Japanese consumption tax; the dollar figure is only an approximate conversion and will move with exchange rates.
The figure debuted at Yokohama’s Great Gold Exhibition on September 30, 2026, before sales expanded to SGC Gold Shops and selected Japanese department stores on October 6. Quantities are limited, store start dates can differ, and SGC says the price may change with the gold market.

It is a physical Gholdengo figure made from K24 (24-karat) pure gold. Gholdengo is Pokémon No. 1000, and the release is tied to the 30th anniversary of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green. The product is a luxury character collectible, not software, a trading-card expansion, or a conventional mass-market toy.
SGC describes the figure as approximately 6 cm tall and made with approximately 15 g of K24 gold. It comes with a glass case, which is part of the presentation and storage rather than an indication that the item is a playable product.

How much does the pure-gold Gholdengo cost?
SGC’s official listed price is ¥1,540,000 including tax. Secondary reports have rendered that amount as about $9,800, but the dollar equivalent is not a fixed retail price. Exchange rates, card-issuer conversion rates, shipping, customs charges, and any destination-country taxes can all change the final amount paid outside Japan.

Because the exhibition dates have passed, anyone looking for current inventory should confirm availability, ordering rules, and accepted payment methods directly with SGC or an authorized participating store. The announcement does not establish an international online checkout option.
Is the life-size gold Gholdengo for sale?
No retail price or ordinary purchase route is stated for the large Gholdengo display. It is a separate exhibition piece, not the 6 cm K24 figure.

| Display | Published details | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Life-size Gholdengo | Approximately 120 cm; about 730 gold-leaf sheets | Exhibition display; no stated retail price |
| Gold-leaf Pikachu | Approximately 40 cm tall, or about 50 cm including ears; about 200 gold-leaf sheets | Exhibition display; no stated retail price |
| K24 Gholdengo | Approximately 6 cm; about 15 g of solid K24 gold | Retail figure listed at ¥1,540,000 including tax |
The distinction matters: gold leaf is applied as extremely thin sheets over a display form, while the retail Gholdengo is the small solid-gold product described by the price. The large pieces should not be treated as upsized versions available through the same store listing.
Why did SGC choose Gholdengo?
The announcement links the character’s design to its gold theme and to the Pokémon’s “Good as Gold” ability. SGC’s release quotes the in-game description in Japanese: 「酸化せず 丈夫な 黄金の体は 相手からの 変化技を 受けない。」 A clear English rendering is: “Its sturdy golden body does not oxidize and prevents opponents from using status moves.” The wording is a character reference, not a claim that the figure has a gameplay function.

What should buyers check before paying?
- Confirm the item: Ask whether the listing is the approximately 6 cm K24 figure, rather than a photograph or reference to an exhibition statue.
- Verify the seller: Use SGC or a department store identified in the official release, and request an itemized receipt showing the tax-inclusive yen price.
- Check current pricing: SGC warns that the price can change with the gold market, so an older article or screenshot may be out of date.
- Plan import costs: International buyers should establish shipping, customs treatment, insurance, and destination taxes before committing; none is included in the Japanese list price unless the seller explicitly says so.
- Protect the packaging: The glass case is supplied with the figure. Confirm how it will be packed and what happens if the case or figure is damaged in transit.
Is this a new Pokémon game or card set?
No. The announcement concerns a physical precious-metal figure. It has no stated game software, booster packs, cards, download code, or in-game entitlement attached to it.

It compresses a yen-denominated Japanese retail price into a headline-friendly dollar estimate. Treat ¥1,540,000 including tax as the authoritative published figure, and treat any dollar amount as a snapshot that can change before a purchase is completed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the ¥1,540,000 price include Japanese tax?
Yes. SGC states that its listed ¥1,540,000 price includes tax. Overseas buyers should still ask the seller and their customs authority about taxes or duties charged when the item enters another country.
Can the gold value alone determine what the figure is worth?
No. The quoted price also reflects fabrication, licensing, presentation, retail overhead, and the collectible market. The announcement gives the gold weight and list price but does not promise a resale value or investment return.

Request written confirmation from SGC or a named authorized department-store channel, keep the tax-inclusive receipt, and ensure the paperwork identifies the K24 Gholdengo rather than an exhibition display. Avoid relying on an unverified marketplace description or a dollar conversion alone.
Why might the store price differ from an article published earlier?
SGC says the price may change with the gold market, and exchange rates can alter the apparent dollar cost. Store launch dates and remaining stock can also differ, so a prior report is not a guarantee of today’s availability.
