Europe and Japan got the better Avenging Spirit box art. Their white-background illustration puts the cheerful ghost and the characters he can possess at the center, making the Game Boy game’s unusual identity immediately clear. North America’s cover has stronger action-movie punch—a gangster firing a gun beneath bold type—but it suggests a conventional crime shooter more than a possession-driven rescue adventure. In Nintendo Life’s 2026 Box Art Brawl poll, the Europe/Japan design won with 71% of 1,527 votes, while North America received 29%.
What is Avenging Spirit about?
Avenging Spirit is a one-player Game Boy action game developed by C.P.Brain and published by Jaleco. Japan received it on 6 November 1992 under the title Phantasm; North America followed in December 1992, and Europe received the game during 1992.

The opening establishes the premise: an evil syndicate shoots the hero and kidnaps his girlfriend. He returns as a ghost and sets out to rescue her. The defining mechanic is possession. Nintendo’s official description, reproduced by Nintendo Life, calls it “a unique gameplay system where you possess and control other characters!” That system is the key to judging which regional package communicates the game best.
How do the North American and Europe/Japan covers differ?
| Aspect | North America | Europe/Japan |
|---|---|---|
| Central idea | A gangster-style shooting scene | A friendly ghost surrounded by characters from the adventure |
| Composition | Circular framing with an action-oriented pose and typography | White background with an ensemble arrangement |
| Immediate message | Crime, danger and shooting | Ghosts, character possession and a broader cast |
| Shelf impression | Fast, dramatic action game | A distinctive supernatural action game |
| Connection to the plot | Shows the syndicate threat but not the possession premise | Signals the ghost protagonist and the people he can inhabit |
What does the North American artwork communicate?
The North American package is built for instant impact. Its circular image isolates a gangster in the act of shooting, while the forceful type treatment reinforces a pulpy action tone. At a glance, it promises confrontation and danger, and that directness can make it the more striking object on a crowded shelf.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Its weakness is specificity. A shopper who knows nothing about the game could reasonably expect a standard gangster or run-and-gun shooter. The image does not explain that the player is a ghost who survives by taking over other bodies, nor does it show the rescue story that motivates the stages.
What does the Europe/Japan artwork communicate?
The Europe/Japan design takes the opposite approach. A cheerful-looking ghost occupies the center, with characters encountered during the journey arranged around him on an open white field. The layout is less aggressive, but it exposes the game’s unusual cast and supernatural hook before the cartridge is even played.

That visual friendliness may undersell the danger of the opening story, yet it gives the package a memorable identity. It tells a prospective player that this is not simply another shooting game: the ghost and the people around him are the subject.

Which cover represents the gameplay more accurately?
The Europe/Japan cover wins on representation because possession is the mechanic that differentiates Avenging Spirit from more familiar Game Boy action titles. Showing the ghost alongside multiple characters suggests the player’s ability to move through the world by controlling different bodies. The North American scene represents the syndicate conflict, but it leaves the game’s most important innovation invisible.
This is a distinction between plot illustration and genre shorthand. The North American art efficiently says “action”; the Europe/Japan art more clearly says “ghost who uses other characters.” For a game whose official description foregrounds possession, the second message is more informative.
Which design has the stronger visual execution?
Visual strength depends on the job a box needs to perform. North America’s circular framing creates a contained, poster-like burst of motion, and the shooting pose has immediate drama. It is the cleaner choice if the goal is to make the game look intense from several feet away.

The Europe/Japan composition is more unusual. The white field gives the ghost and surrounding figures room to read, and the ensemble structure rewards a closer look. It has less visual aggression but more narrative information, which helps it stand apart from generic action packaging.
What did readers choose in the 2026 Box Art Brawl?
Nintendo Life reported a live result of 1,527 votes: Europe/Japan took 71% and North America 29%. The figures are a snapshot of that poll and can change if the feature remains open. The margin nevertheless supports a clear editorial reading: most voters preferred the cover that explains the game’s ghost-centered concept rather than the one that sells a broader gangster fantasy.
The result does not make the North American image a failure. Its action coding is coherent and may have greater standalone punch. It shows that, for this audience, communicating what makes Avenging Spirit different mattered more than maximizing conventional action appeal.

It settles the 2026 reader vote, not every aesthetic preference. Choose North America if you value bold action staging and immediate shelf impact. Choose Europe/Japan if you want packaging that reflects the ghost, the possession mechanic and the game’s ensemble of playable bodies. On the evidence of both the premise and the poll, Europe/Japan is the stronger overall answer.

Is Avenging Spirit a multiplayer Game Boy game?
No. It is a one-player action game. Its central variety comes from possessing and controlling other characters rather than from competitive or cooperative multiplayer.

The surrounding figures refer to the bodies the ghost can encounter and control during the adventure. That ensemble makes the possession mechanic easier to infer than the North American shooting scene does.
What do I need to play the modern Nintendo release?
