Bluesky and Threads both offer more than one way to shape a feed, and both enforce platform rules. The key difference is that Bluesky supports independently built feeds and optional third-party moderation labels, while Threads offers Meta-run recommendations, custom feeds, and in-app controls for replies and recommendations. Neither is inherently private: Bluesky activity is public by design, while Threads offers private profiles and optional sharing across compatible servers.
Choose based on which controls matter most—and check visibility settings before posting. Feed choice is not the same as privacy, and neither service gives users complete control over platform moderation or company data practices.

| Bluesky | People who want independently built feeds and optional community labeling | AT Protocol; posts and several social-graph activities are public by design | Nov 2026 |

What is the main difference between Bluesky and Threads?
Bluesky gives users a route to feeds and moderation labels made by independent providers; Threads’ documented feed and conversation controls are operated within Meta’s app. Both services still have baseline rules and enforcement by the platform itself.
That distinction is more useful than the old shorthand that Bluesky is customizable and Threads is not. Threads supports public custom feeds that users can create, share, discover, and pin. Bluesky’s difference is that its ecosystem includes feeds built independently of the platform, with recommendation systems that Bluesky says it does not control.

The services also use different protocols. Bluesky is built on AT Protocol, while Threads offers optional ActivityPub federation for eligible users. These are separate networks: having an account on one does not automatically make it an account on the other, and interoperability should not be mistaken for a shared feed or shared moderation system. Bluesky explains its protocol and feed approach in its official FAQ; Meta describes federation in its Threads fediverse-sharing announcement.
Which app gives you more control over your feed?
Bluesky is the stronger fit if you want to select feeds built by independent providers. Threads offers substantial in-app choice too, but its recommendation controls do not amount to installing an independently hosted feed algorithm.

Bluesky: choose feeds made by different providers
Bluesky’s feed system is not an escape from algorithms. Its terms say the Discover feed uses a recommender algorithm, and that users can opt out of Discover. You can also add other feeds, including ones created by third parties. Those providers may use their own recommendation systems, which Bluesky says it does not control. This gives users a choice of feed source, but it does not mean every feed is chronological or free of automated ranking.
Bluesky’s FAQ has described more than 40,000 algorithmic feeds. The page does not give that figure a clear as-of date, so it should not be read as a current count. The practical point is that the feed ecosystem is designed to accommodate multiple feed builders, rather than limiting choice to a single platform-defined recommendation stream. See the Bluesky Terms of Service for the distinction between Discover and third-party feeds.
Threads: For You, Following, custom feeds, and Your Algo
Threads’ For You feed mixes posts from accounts you follow with recommended posts. The Following feed is chronological and shows posts from accounts you follow. Users can also create and share public custom feeds, discover other people’s public feeds, and pin feeds. Meta has documented the ability to reorder feeds and set a custom feed as the one shown when opening the app.
In June 2026, Meta introduced Your Algo, which lets users privately request more or less of selected topics for one, three, or seven days. Meta announced its rollout for the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. That announced availability should not be assumed to apply worldwide. Your Algo is a Meta-operated personalization control, not evidence that users can install independent feed generators in the same way Bluesky describes. Meta’s Your Algo announcement gives the feature’s scope and rollout.

In short, Threads users can pick and organize feeds and adjust recommendations; Bluesky users can also choose third-party feed providers. Neither app should be described as having no algorithm. When deciding, ask whether you want to tune a platform-run feed, select among different feeds in the app, or choose feeds whose recommendation systems are built outside the platform.
How do moderation and content controls differ?
Neither service is wholly user-moderated. Bluesky and Meta set and enforce baseline rules; the difference is that Bluesky also lets users subscribe to additional labeling services, while Threads emphasizes in-app controls for managing interactions and recommendations.
Bluesky’s baseline moderation and optional labels
Bluesky says human moderators and automated systems enforce its Community Guidelines. Separately, users can create or subscribe to labeling services that can identify content or accounts and help users hide or warn on material according to their preferences. These optional labels supplement the platform’s rules; they do not replace Bluesky Social’s authority to enforce its own guidelines.
Bluesky Social reported that 16.49 million labels were applied during 2025 and that automated systems applied 95.34% of them. Those are company-reported figures about its 2025 moderation activity, not a cross-platform measure of safety, accuracy, or moderation quality. The underlying rules are described in the Bluesky Community Guidelines; its 2025 transparency report provides the operational figures.

Meta says Instagram’s Community Guidelines govern content and interactions on Threads. Users can report and block accounts, filter replies using hidden words, and use controls such as follower-only replies or quote posts and per-post reply approvals. These features let people limit who joins a conversation or reduce unwanted replies, but they are not the same as subscribing to moderation labels from independent providers.
Meta’s Threads launch announcement also discussed a fact-checking program, but that older, updated announcement is not enough to establish that a particular fact-checking workflow applies uniformly in every location today. Don’t infer a current, global fact-checking process from it. For a reader choosing between the services, it is more reliable to compare documented baseline rules and the controls available for their own conversations than to assume that either platform has a single, universally applied approach to every disputed post.

Is Bluesky more private than Threads?
There is no sound basis here for saying that one company categorically collects less personal data. The clearest distinction is visibility: Bluesky describes posts and several social-graph activities as public by design, whereas Threads allows private profiles and, for eligible adults with public profiles, optional sharing to other ActivityPub servers.
What is public on Bluesky?
Bluesky’s privacy policy, dated August 14, 2025, says that posts and comments are public and identifies profiles, likes, follows, and blocks as public-by-design activity. A user should therefore not treat a post or those interactions as a private space simply because the app feels like a personal social feed. The policy also says Bluesky collects account details and information such as IP address, device, cookie, and usage data.

Bluesky says its direct messages are not encrypted and may be accessed for Trust & Safety purposes. That matters if you are deciding where to discuss sensitive information: a direct-message interface is not, by itself, a promise of end-to-end encryption. The policy also says Bluesky does not sell or share personal data for its defined targeted-advertising purpose. That statement does not mean the service collects no data or that all of its data practices are covered by that one phrase.
Account deletion also has a limit in a decentralized system. Bluesky’s terms warn that independent AT Protocol services may retain copies after an account is deleted. Deleting your account should not be treated as a guarantee that every copy of public material disappears from every service. Read the Bluesky privacy policy and terms for the company’s full qualifications.
What is public on Threads?
Threads uses an Instagram account for login. Meta says profiles are private by default for users under 16, or under 18 in some countries; this does not mean that every adult account is private by default. Check the profile’s visibility setting rather than assuming it. Meta has also documented controls for message requests, including the option to turn off requests from people the user does not follow.
Eligible adults with public Threads profiles can opt into sharing through ActivityPub. Meta warns that other servers can view, interact with, and further share federated content. A private Threads profile and a public profile that is shared with the fediverse are therefore different visibility choices. Federation can extend the reach of a post beyond Meta’s own app, and actions on other servers may be governed by those servers’ own systems.

Meta’s June 2026 statement about activity shared by other businesses says such activity can be used to personalize content as well as ads and describes an Activity from other businesses control. That is a Meta-wide statement, not a complete inventory of data collected or used specifically by Threads. The available official material does not support a field-by-field comparison of all Threads data categories, nor does it establish that Threads messages are end-to-end encrypted. For current details, consult Meta’s Threads launch and product information and its June 2026 announcement.
So the better privacy question is not simply “Which app is more private?” Ask what you intend to make visible, whether you want a private profile, what a service says about messages, and whether a post can travel to other servers. A private Threads profile offers a visibility option that Bluesky’s described public-by-design activity does not; that alone does not establish which company collects less personal information.
Can posts travel beyond the app?
Yes, but the mechanisms differ. Bluesky uses AT Protocol, and Threads’ optional federation uses ActivityPub; those protocols do not turn Bluesky and Threads into one shared network.
Bluesky’s protocol-based design supports portable identity and social-graph features. Its terms caution that independent services may retain copies of material, including after account deletion. Threads’ ActivityPub sharing is optional, and Meta documents a dedicated reverse-chronological feed for followed federated accounts that share posts from other compatible servers. This is a way for Threads users to interact with some accounts beyond Threads, not a direct connection to every other social network.
Before enabling federation or posting publicly, consider that control over a post may change once it reaches other servers. Meta specifically warns that other servers can view, interact with, and further share federated content. On either service, a public post may be copied, quoted, or retained outside the place where it was originally published. Protocol portability can offer more choice about services and audiences, but it is not the same as confidentiality or universal deletion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How large are the audiences?
The companies have published figures, but they use different definitions and should not be turned into a direct size ratio. Bluesky Social reported more than 44 million users as of May 2026; that figure is not identified as monthly active users. Meta announced 500 million monthly active Threads users in June 2026.

The numbers give scale and a date, not a guarantee that the accounts or communities you want are active on either service. They also are not comparable measures: one is a total-user figure and the other is monthly active users. For many people, the practical audience is the set of accounts, communities, and readers they want to follow or reach, rather than a headline total. These are company-reported figures, not live counts.
Which should you choose?
Choose based on the control you value most, then verify that the people you want to follow are there. Neither option is universally better, and no single feature settles the privacy question.
- Consider Bluesky if choosing among independently built feeds or adding community-created moderation labels is important to you. Do so with the understanding that posts and several social-graph activities are public by design, messages are not encrypted according to the policy, and independent services may retain copies.
- Consider Threads if Instagram-linked access, the in-app mix of For You, Following, and custom feeds, or conversation controls such as reply filtering and approval matter more. Check profile visibility, and treat ActivityPub sharing as an additional audience choice rather than a default feature that leaves content within Threads.
- Use both only with clear boundaries if different communities are active on each. A post intended for a limited audience should not be assumed to stay limited just because it was written in a particular app; review profile and federation settings before sharing.
As of the information available in November 2026, Your Algo’s announced rollout was limited to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. Federation eligibility and feature availability can also change. Check the current in-app settings and the linked official policy pages for your region before making a decision based on a particular control.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I follow a Bluesky account from Threads?
Not just by having accounts on both services: Bluesky uses AT Protocol, while Threads’ optional federation uses ActivityPub. A normal account on one is not automatically a native account on the other, and the two networks should not be treated as one shared feed.
Can I use my own domain as a Bluesky handle?
Bluesky’s FAQ describes using a domain as a handle as an option. It is not required to use Bluesky, and a custom handle does not make public posts private.
Are direct messages on Bluesky or Threads end-to-end encrypted?
Bluesky says its direct messages are unencrypted and may be accessed for Trust & Safety. The official material covered here does not establish whether Threads messages are end-to-end encrypted, so check Meta’s current product and privacy documentation rather than assuming.
