Block Mature Games and In-Game Purchases on PS5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch: A Parent’s Setup Guide

Use four layers, in this order: create a child account with the correct birthdate, block games above the child’s ESRB age band, lock the platform’s spending system, and secure every workaround such as adult profiles, gift-card balances, and game-specific stores. On PlayStation, leave the child’s monthly limit at $0; on Xbox, turn on Needs adult approval to buy things but remember that existing gift-card or account funds can still be spent; on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, enable the Nintendo Account spending restriction and protect the console-wide PIN. These controls are free and require no extra hardware. The instructions below apply primarily to U.S. accounts using ESRB ratings; menus and rating authorities can differ elsewhere.

What is the safest way to block mature games and spending?

Do not rely on one toggle. A child using an unmanaged adult profile, a second local user, a stored-value balance, or a game’s own wallet can bypass an otherwise correct age filter. Complete all four layers before handing over the controller.

  1. Build the account layer. Use a separate child account, enter the real date of birth, and keep the adult family-manager, organizer, or parent account protected by a password or PIN the child does not know.
  2. Set the content layer. Choose the platform’s age-rating filter so games above the child’s permitted ESRB band cannot launch or install.
  3. Set the spending layer. Use PlayStation’s monthly limit, Xbox approval requests, or Nintendo’s eShop spending restriction. Remove saved payment cards from every adult profile the child can open.
  4. Close the remaining paths. Protect adult profiles and the Nintendo PIN, then configure parental controls inside games that have their own stores or communication systems.

ESRB’s parent guidance summarizes the account principle as “Setting up child accounts for each of your children.” Shared adult profiles are the most common reason a control appears to fail.

Platform differences that affect your setup
Platform Content control Spending control Scope Companion tools
PlayStation 5/4 Age Level and restriction presets based on the child’s age and ESRB ratings Monthly dollar limit; default is $0 Per child account PlayStation Family app, web Family Management
Xbox Series X|S/Xbox One and Windows Age-band filter with individual-title overrides Adult approval requests; existing gift-card or account funds remain usable Per child Microsoft account Xbox Family Settings and Microsoft Family Safety
Nintendo Switch/Switch 2 Console restriction level such as Teen, Pre-Teen, Child, or Custom On/off eShop spending restriction; no monthly dollar cap Software restrictions are console-wide; eShop restriction is account-based Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app and Nintendo Account Family Group

Native parental controls on all three platforms are free. The controls do not make a child account interchangeable with an adult account: keep the adult credentials private and require the child to sign in only to the supervised profile.

How do I block mature games on a PlayStation 5 or PS4?

Create a PlayStation family first, add the child as a family member, and then set restrictions on that child account. PlayStation says parental controls are tied to the account and apply across devices.

Open the child’s PlayStation controls

  • PS5: Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management > select the child.
  • Web: Sign in to Account Management > Family Management > select the child > Edit.
  • Phone: Use the free PlayStation Family app. Sony lists a minimum of iOS 14 or Android 8.

If you change a restriction while a game is running, have the child sign out and back in so the new setting is applied.

Choose an age level that excludes Mature and Adults Only

On PS5, use the restriction-level presets under the child’s settings, or choose Customize and set the individual controls. The age-based model permits content rated at or below the child’s age. ESRB gives this example: if a child is 12, games rated T for Teen, M for Mature 17+, and AO for Adults Only 18+ are blocked.

For a stricter or more specific setup, review these controls separately:

  • Age Level for Games on PS5, PS4, and PS3.
  • Age Filtering for Online Content, where available in your country or region.
  • Blu-ray/DVD age level, if the console plays discs.
  • Use of PlayStation VR / VR2. Sony states that PlayStation VR and PlayStation VR2 are not for use by children under 12.

If a restricted title is selected, PlayStation blocks it and displays a request option. The child can ask for an exception; the family manager or an appointed parent or guardian receives a notification and email and can approve it in the app, on the web, or under Allowed Games on the PS5.

How do I set the PlayStation spending limit to zero?

On PS5, go to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management > choose the child > Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit. On PS4, use Applications/Devices/Network Features > Monthly Spending Limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sony’s current support documentation says the default monthly spending limit is 0. Leave it at 0 to block purchases charged through the child account, including add-ons billed through PlayStation Store. When a child does buy content, payment is taken from the family manager’s wallet; it is not a separate card the child can add to the account. Appointed guardians may also be able to change the limit, so agree on one setting with every adult in the family.

Lock communications and privacy at the same time

Under Communication and User-Generated Content, choose Restrict to disable text and voice chat with other players, sharing the child’s user-generated content, viewing others’ user-generated content, and some linked third-party communication apps. Pre-written in-game messages can still be available, and a child may request a per-game communication exception.

Prevent the child from changing parental controls on the console. In Privacy Settings, keep the parent or guardian as the person allowed to change privacy choices unless you deliberately want to delegate that role.

How do I block mature games and purchases on Xbox?

Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and the child’s Microsoft account on Windows 10 or 11 use the same Microsoft family framework. You can manage it in the Xbox Family Settings app, at family.microsoft.com or account.microsoft.com/family, or from the console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the Xbox content filter

  1. Open the Xbox Family Settings app and select the child under Your Family.
  2. Choose Content Restrictions.
  3. Turn on Filter Inappropriate Content.
  4. Select Allow Content Suitable for Age and confirm the child’s age.

Parents can also block or allow a specific title regardless of its rating. ESRB’s Xbox example says an age of 9 permits E for Everyone, while an age of 11 permits E and E10+ but not T or M.

On the console, use Settings > Privacy and online safety > select the family member > Content restrictions and choose the numeric age scale aligned with ESRB. On the Microsoft Family website, open More options > Content restrictions > Block inappropriate apps, games & media > Allow apps and games rated for [age]. The View allowed ratings link shows the resulting band. Only an organizer can change these safety settings.

Turn on Ask to Buy

The clearest web path is the Microsoft Family site: select the child’s name > Content restrictions > turn on Needs adult approval to buy things. Approval or denial then happens through the notification email or the family.microsoft.com account.

On the console, use the adult account: Xbox button > System > Settings > Account > Family > child’s account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox Network privacy > View details & customize > Buy & download. Turn the approval control on and set any available limit.

Why can a child still spend gift-card money on Xbox?

Approval is not a complete block when the child’s Microsoft account already has stored value. ESRB’s Xbox guide warns that children can still make purchases with gift cards and funds a parent has put into the account; the account holder receives an email whenever an Xbox Store purchase is made.

For a hard stop, do not preload the child’s balance, remove payment methods from accessible adult accounts, and review the account’s order history. Any spending limit applies only while the child is signed in to that child account, so protect every adult profile and require a passcode for new local users.

How do I restrict mature games and eShop purchases on Nintendo Switch?

Nintendo requires two different locks: the console Parental Controls PIN for software and communication, and a Nintendo Account Family Group spending restriction for eShop and eShop-billed in-game purchases. Set both. On the original Switch, the software restriction is console-wide rather than per child; siblings therefore share one ceiling.

Set the Switch or Switch 2 restriction level

The Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app is the recommended route and is required for some Switch 2 GameChat cases involving children under 16 or supervised accounts.

  1. Open the app and tap Parental Controls > Restricted Features.
  2. Choose Restriction level: Teen, Pre-Teen, Child, or Custom. Labels can vary slightly by software version.
  3. For a U.S. or Canadian account, choose Teen to allow E, E10+, and T ratings while excluding Mature 17+.
  4. Use Custom or Restricted Software when you need a different ceiling, then save a PIN the child does not know.

ESRB’s Switch 2 guide specifically states that the Teen level allows E, E10+, and T. ESRB is automatically the default rating authority when the Nintendo Account country is set to the U.S. or Canada.

Without a phone, use System Settings > Parental Controls > No Smart Device Available > Restriction Level on Switch 2. On the original Switch, use System Settings > Parental Controls > Parental Controls Settings > Use This Console > Restriction Level, then save a PIN. In the original console’s model, restrictions apply to all users of that console, not individually managed profiles.

Restrict Nintendo eShop spending

  1. Sign in to the parent Nintendo Account and open Family Group.
  2. Select the child account.
  3. Open Spending Restrictions.
  4. Check Restrict purchases of Nintendo eShop products, etc. and save.
  5. Confirm that the row shows Restricted.

The same page can open from the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app under Restricted Features > Spending Restrictions. Nintendo’s parent instructions state that a child account is a Nintendo Account for children aged 12 and under; older accounts should still be added to the family group and supervised where appropriate. Link the Nintendo Account to the correct Switch user profile, or the spending restriction will not attach to that user.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

After the box is checked, the child needs parent permission for new games and in-game content through Nintendo eShop. The account holder receives an email on eShop purchases. Nintendo has no monthly dollar cap: spending is an on/off restriction combined with whatever funds are available. An unsupervised 13–17 account may still have access to gift-card funds, so supervision and account linking matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect the console-wide Nintendo PIN

Because the software PIN governs the whole console, never share it with a child who uses a different account. A sibling who knows the PIN can change the restriction for everyone. Keep the Nintendo Account password and the console PIN separate, and store both in an adult password manager.

Understand Switch 2 extras

GameChat controls are separate from game-age and spending limits. For under-16 and supervised accounts, the Parental Controls app may be required, friend approval can be enabled, and video chat can require permission for each session. Play-Time Limit and Bedtime settings manage time, not content or spending; with Suspend Play When Time’s Up disabled, the console only warns instead of powering off.

Why can a child still buy items inside Fortnite or Roblox?

A console-store lock covers charges routed through PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, or Nintendo eShop. It does not automatically control every game’s own wallet, account, or communication system.

Fortnite

ESRB says Fortnite’s Cabined Accounts automatically block voice chat and real-money purchases until a parent provides consent. Keep the console spending lock enabled anyway, because the child may use another account or another purchase route if the platform profile is not supervised.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Roblox

Sony states that Roblox communications are independent of the parental-control settings selected on PS4 or PS5. Configure chat and communication in Roblox’s own parent tools, while using the console spending restriction and Roblox’s in-game spending controls for Robux.

Other game wallets

Look for a game-specific family menu, purchase PIN, or account dashboard. Remove saved cards, disable one-click buying, and check whether the game permits gift cards, prepaid currency, or a wallet shared across devices.

What should I check if the controls are not working?

  • Wrong profile: Confirm the child is not playing on an adult account or a new local user without a passcode.
  • Wrong birthdate: Age filters follow the date entered on the account; correct the account or use a properly created child profile.
  • Unapplied PlayStation change: Have the child sign out and back in after changing a restriction.
  • Stored value: Review Xbox gift-card and Microsoft-account funds; Ask to Buy does not consume or freeze an existing balance.
  • Nintendo PIN exposure: Change the PIN immediately if the child has learned it. One PIN affects the entire Switch.
  • Unlinked Nintendo account: Verify that the supervised Nintendo Account is linked to the exact Switch user profile making purchases.
  • Game-specific store: Configure the title’s own parental tools; platform controls cannot guarantee coverage of a separate wallet.
  • Adult credentials: Change the family-manager password and remove saved cards from any profile the child can open.

How can I verify the setup without allowing a purchase?

Use a non-purchasing checklist rather than testing with a real charge. Sign in as the child and confirm that a game above the selected rating is unavailable, that the store displays an approval or restriction message, and that the child cannot open the adult profile without its PIN or password.

Then review the family dashboard from the adult account: check the child’s birthdate, permitted rating band, spending setting, linked Nintendo user if applicable, and the notification email. Repeat the review after console software updates, account changes, or adding another device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I allow one mature game without opening every mature title?

Yes. PlayStation supports an exception request through Allowed Games, and Xbox can allow or block individual titles regardless of the age band. On Nintendo, use a Custom restriction only when you accept that the console-wide setting affects every user; do not disclose the PIN as a workaround.

Do parental controls stop purchases when the console is offline?

They prevent access according to the account’s stored settings, but a purchase cannot be completed until the store can verify the account and payment state. Review queued downloads and order history after the console reconnects, especially on an account that already has stored value.

Can a child use a different console with the same account?

PlayStation and Xbox restrictions follow the child account, so the settings travel with that account on supported devices. Nintendo’s software restriction is tied to the console, while eShop spending restrictions follow the Nintendo Account; set the PIN and spending rule on every Switch the child uses.

What happens when my child turns 18?

Age-based restrictions generally no longer treat the account as a child account once it reaches the platform’s adult threshold, but existing family membership, passwords, and payment methods may remain. Review the account’s family role and spending permissions before changing supervision.
