For most newcomers with a supported current console or PC, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is the better starting point: it rebuilds the 2013 adventure and adds modernized combat, stealth, accessibility options and new story content. Choose the original if you want its untouched 2013 design, need a PS4 or Switch version, or want the Switch Rebel Collection’s included single-player DLC. Neither is a safe pick for someone whose main goal is online multiplayer: Resynced has none, and a feature label on the original’s store listing does not confirm that its servers are available.

What is Black Flag Resynced?
Resynced is Ubisoft Singapore’s ground-up remake of 2013’s Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, released July 9, 2026. It is not simply a resolution or frame-rate update: Ubisoft says it rebuilt assets and revised core systems while keeping Edward Kenway’s central adventure as its foundation. Its changes are substantial enough that a returning player should think of it as a new take on the same adventure, not just the old game with sharper images.
The remake adds scenes, quests and story arcs while preserving the main story. Ubisoft’s description emphasizes a faithful retelling, not a replacement of Edward’s original journey. That makes it a sensible first playthrough for someone who wants to see the familiar narrative with added material and updated mechanics. Someone interested specifically in the original game’s pacing, systems and presentation should instead seek the 2013 release.

What changes between the remake and the original?
The clearest differences are in the way Edward moves, fights, hides and commands his ship. They change the feel of moment-to-moment play, but the available evidence does not establish that one design is objectively better; the right choice depends on whether you prefer modern revisions or the original’s historical form.
Combat, stealth and parkour
Resynced adds parry-based ground combat and changes parkour. Its stealth system lets Edward crouch anywhere and makes light sensitivity part of avoiding detection. These are practical changes for players who prefer contemporary stealth conventions or want more explicit ways to approach encounters. The original preserves its 2013 combat and stealth design, which may be part of the appeal for players revisiting it as a period piece.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe remake also adds naval weapons and officers, and Ubisoft describes more seamless transitions between sailing and land exploration. That does not mean the original lacks the core ship-and-island structure that defines the adventure; rather, Resynced updates systems within that structure. If you remember the original’s particular rhythm at sea or in combat, expect revisions rather than a one-for-one recreation.
Story additions
New scenes, quests and story arcs are among the remake’s documented additions. The main Edward Kenway story remains the anchor, so a first-time player does not need to know the 2013 version before playing Resynced. Returning players may value the added material, but should not assume that the remake is a substitute for experiencing the exact original presentation.
Sailing, weather and presentation
Ubisoft describes rebuilt visual assets, ray tracing, updated weather and water, and more seamless traversal between ship and shore. Those are publisher descriptions of the remake’s design; they are not independent measurements of image quality or performance. The original remains the choice for someone who wants its launch-era presentation, while Resynced is the option designed for newer hardware.
Which game should a first-time player choose?
A newcomer should generally start with Resynced if they have a supported platform and want the most modernized solo version. Start with the original instead if its unaltered design matters more than added systems, or if the version you can access includes content you specifically want.

- Choose Resynced if you want revised combat and stealth, new story material, extensive accessibility controls, or current-generation presentation.
- Choose the original if you want to experience the 2013 design as it was, or if PS4 or Switch is the platform you own.
- Choose the Switch Rebel Collection if you want the original Black Flag together with its documented single-player DLC, including Freedom Cry, and Rogue.
- Do not choose either version for dependable multiplayer unless you can verify current service status for your particular platform; Resynced is explicitly solo-only.
There is no requirement to play the original before the remake. Resynced keeps the main adventure intact while adding material, so a first-time player can follow its story on its own. A player deciding between a revisit and a new experience should consider whether they value the older game’s original mechanics more than the remake’s changed systems and additions.
Can you play Resynced on PS4 or Switch?
No. Resynced is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and is officially listed as Steam Deck Verified. It is not a PS4 or Switch release. The original is a PS4 title that can be played on PS5 through backward compatibility, and the Switch version is part of The Rebel Collection.
This platform difference can settle the comparison before gameplay does. A PS4 owner looking for a version to play on that console needs the original; the remake is not a PS4 upgrade path. A Switch owner should look at the collection rather than expect a separate Resynced port. On PS5, both options are possible: the original through backward compatibility, or the remake as a current-generation release.
How does Resynced run on PS5 and PC?
Ubisoft lists three PS5 graphics modes: Performance at 60 FPS, Fidelity at 30 FPS, and Balanced at 40 FPS on displays that support 120 Hz. These are the company’s published mode specifications, not independently measured sustained frame rates. Which mode suits you depends on whether you prioritize a higher listed frame-rate target, visual fidelity, or a middle option on compatible displays.
| Mode | Published target | Requirement or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | 60 FPS | Ubisoft-listed mode specification |
| Fidelity | 30 FPS | Ubisoft-listed mode specification |
| Balanced | 40 FPS | Requires a 120 Hz display, according to Ubisoft |
For PC, Ubisoft’s published minimum requirements include 16 GB of dual-channel RAM, 65 GB of storage on an SSD with a DRAM cache, and a graphics card such as a GTX 1660 with 6 GB, RX 5500 XT with 8 GB, or Arc A580 with 8 GB. Those are minimum examples, not a promise that every PC configuration with one of those components will deliver the same experience. Check the complete requirements for your particular setup before buying, especially if your storage or memory differs from the stated minimum.
The original’s PC requirements are substantially older and lighter than Resynced’s published minimum. Its Ubisoft Store page has a system-requirements section labeled “Xbox (Digital),” so that label should not be read as an Xbox hardware requirement for the PC edition. If a low-spec PC is the deciding factor, compare the actual PC requirements for the edition you plan to buy rather than infer support from that confusing heading.

Which version has better accessibility options?
Resynced has a broader documented set of accessibility controls, including separate difficulty settings for naval play, ground combat, activities and stealth. Ubisoft also lists remapping, skippable QTEs, aim assistance, options affecting underwater oxygen and sharks, a camera dot, subtitle controls and navigation assistance.
Those options can matter in a game that alternates between ship combat, exploration, stealth and close-quarters encounters. Separate difficulty controls let a player tune parts of the experience rather than treating every activity as one difficulty setting. Skippable QTEs and remapping can also be useful for players who find particular inputs or timed sequences difficult. These are documented features, not a guarantee that every accessibility need is covered.

Does Resynced include Freedom Cry or multiplayer?
Resynced does not include multiplayer, and Ubisoft’s listing for the Switch Rebel Collection explicitly includes the original game’s single-player DLC, including Freedom Cry, as well as Rogue. A report quoting creative director Paul Fu says the old DLC was omitted from Resynced, so do not buy the remake expecting Freedom Cry to be included.
The original game’s online status is less certain. Its PlayStation listing describes up to eight online players with PS Plus, and Ubisoft marks the original as multiplayer, but those labels do not establish that matchmaking or servers currently work. An indexed Ubisoft support notice names the original Wii U online-service retirement date as April 8, 2024; the status on other platforms is not established here. Treat the online feature as unverified for the platform you intend to use, not as a reason to buy either game.
Can you play Resynced offline?
Ubisoft says a one-time internet connection is required to download Resynced, after which its campaign works offline. Live features in Animus Hub require connectivity. That distinction matters if you have unreliable internet: an offline campaign is supported after download, but the initial download and connected Hub features are not offline functions.

Before purchase, consider whether the platform account, download access and storage you need are available. Ubisoft states a 65 GB SSD requirement for the PC version. That is a published storage figure, not an estimate for every future update or platform. The actual amount required can be affected by updates and the platform’s installation process.
What do the editions include, and is Resynced worth the higher price?
At the US PlayStation storefront listings available on October 30, 2026, Resynced’s Standard Edition was $59.99 and Deluxe was $69.99; the original PS4 listing showed $29.99. Those are dated storefront prices, not universal or guaranteed prices. Regional pricing, sales, stock and subscription availability can change, so check the store for your region before deciding.
Ubisoft describes a physical or digital Standard Edition and a digital-only Deluxe Edition with character and naval packs. The Collector’s Edition includes a console disc and physical items such as a figurine and SteelBook, but Ubisoft’s page marked it sold out at the research cut-off. Do not assume that edition is readily available simply because its contents are listed.
The higher price makes most sense if the remake’s revised systems, current-generation presentation and added story content are what you want. The original’s lower listed PS4 price may suit someone who wants the classic version or a less expensive route to Edward’s original adventure. For a Switch buyer, the relevant comparison is not just an original-versus-remake price: the Rebel Collection bundles the original’s single-player DLC and Rogue, content not promised with Resynced.

Yes. Ubisoft’s title update 1.0.8 was scheduled for October 27, 2026, and its notes include New Game+, Nightmare Mode and returning takedown animations from the original. Ubisoft calls it the final major content update while saying quality-of-life updates may follow, so “final major content” does not mean the game can never receive another update.

Which version is right for you?
| If your priority is… | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A first playthrough with modernized systems | Resynced | It keeps Edward’s main adventure and adds revised gameplay systems, scenes and quests. |
| The original 2013 design and presentation | Original Black Flag | It preserves the version’s original mechanics and presentation. |
| PS4 or Switch access | Original Black Flag | Resynced is not available on those platforms; the original is playable on PS4 and in the Switch Rebel Collection. |
| Freedom Cry and Rogue alongside Black Flag | Switch Rebel Collection | The collection documents those inclusions; do not assume Resynced includes the old DLC. |
| More granular accessibility controls | Resynced | It documents separate difficulty settings and a wider set of control and assistance options. |
| Multiplayer today | Neither is a confirmed choice | Resynced is solo-only; the original’s live service status is not established across platforms. |
For a player with a PS5, Xbox Series X|S or capable PC, Resynced is the most straightforward recommendation when the goal is a modern solo adventure. The original remains a valid preference, not an obsolete version: its strongest reasons to choose it are the desire for the original design, access on older hardware, or the contents of the Switch bundle. The best choice is therefore a question of platform and priorities, not a universal ranking.
Ubisoft reported that Resynced sold more than 3 million copies in its first week and 2 million on day one, figures reported by Vantage Studios, a Ubisoft company, in July 2026. Those are company-reported launch figures rather than independently audited lifetime sales, and they say nothing by themselves about which version is the better fit for an individual player.
