Start by identifying who controls the wallet’s keys and exactly what you lost. If your Bitcoin is held in a custodial exchange account, use that exchange’s official account-recovery process. If it is in a self-custody wallet, recovery depends on whether you still have a working device, a usable backup, or another method you configured. A lost phone does not necessarily mean lost Bitcoin; unavailable self-custody keys with no usable backup or recovery route generally cannot be recreated.
Protect your secrets while you investigate: never share a recovery phrase or private key, type one into a website supplied in a message, or give a supposed support agent remote access. Bitcoin.org warns that fake support and paid recovery offers can be scams: Bitcoin.org’s scam guidance.

Pause before resetting, wiping, or moving anything. A password, app PIN, wallet passphrase, recovery phrase, and exchange login are different credentials; using the wrong recovery route can waste time or put a remaining copy of your wallet at risk. Coinbase explains the difference between an exchange account and a self-custody wallet in its custodial and self-custody overview.
- Identify where the Bitcoin is held. Is it in an exchange account managed by a company, or in a wallet for which you control the keys?
- Name what is inaccessible. For example: a lost phone, forgotten exchange password, missing two-step verification method, wallet PIN, encryption password, recovery phrase, or older wallet file.
- Check for another configured access method. Look for a still-accessible device, backup, alternate sign-in, or recovery option that you set up before losing access.
- Use the original provider’s official instructions. Reach the service through its known official app or website rather than a link in an unsolicited message. Follow the instructions for the exact problem, not a similar-sounding one.
- Keep backups private and intact. Do not send recovery words to support, a recovery service, or anyone asking to “verify” them. Do not erase a device that may hold the only remaining working wallet.
Bitcoin.org explains that an appropriate wallet backup can protect against device loss, but loss of access to self-custodied keys may be permanent because there is no central administrator who can reset them: Bitcoin.org’s wallet-security guidance.

How do I recover a custodial exchange account?
For a custodial account, follow the exchange’s account-recovery process. The exchange controls the account login and may ask you to verify your identity; this is not the same as restoring a self-custody wallet with a recovery phrase.
If you forgot the exchange password
Open the exchange’s official password-reset route. Coinbase’s documented example sends a code to the email address associated with the account; if you cannot access that email or your two-step verification method, Coinbase directs users to a separate account-recovery flow. Other exchanges may use different checks and steps. See Coinbase’s password-reset instructions.

First try an alternate verification method you had already configured. If none is available, use the exchange’s official recovery process. Coinbase says its recovery process may require identity verification or an already configured trusted contact, and it cannot replace a lost registered security key. Its documented identity-based process can take up to 24 hours, with a possible additional 24-hour restriction on sending funds. These are Coinbase-specific timings, not a guarantee for every user or a general timetable for other exchanges. If an authentication prompt arrives that you did not initiate, do not approve it. Coinbase advises rejecting an unrecognized prompt, checking the account, and considering an account lock if you suspect unauthorized access. Contact the exchange through its official channel, not through a phone number or link supplied by someone who contacted you first.

How do I restore a self-custody wallet?
A self-custody wallet can be restored only through an access method or backup that belongs to that wallet. Follow the wallet maker’s current instructions; do not assume that every wallet uses the same phrase length, file format, or recovery procedure.
If the device is lost but the backup survives
A lost phone or hardware wallet does not by itself prove that the Bitcoin is gone. If you have the correct backup and the wallet supports restoration from it, use the original wallet’s official restore instructions. Trezor, for example, documents restoring a wallet after device loss with a valid wallet backup: Trezor’s backup and recovery troubleshooting guide.
If the missing device may have been stolen, consider whether someone could access it or its backup. Where appropriate, create a new wallet with a backup you can verify and move the funds while you still have a way to authorize the transfer. A replacement device is useful only if you can restore the wallet or still control the old one; buying hardware cannot recreate unavailable keys.
If the wallet still opens but you cannot find its backup
Preserve the access you still have. Before resetting or retiring the wallet, create and check a new backup using the wallet’s official procedure, verify the destination wallet, and move the funds while the original wallet can still authorize transactions. Trezor warns that migration using a single device can be complicated and that adding an emergency third-party software wallet introduces risk. - Confirm that the destination wallet is yours and that you have secured its backup before transferring funds.
- Use the wallet maker’s instructions for the specific device and recovery format; do not improvise a migration from a generic guide.
If a phrase-based restore fails
Do not disclose the words to anyone while troubleshooting. Check the original wallet’s instructions for its backup format, word order, spelling, and any required passphrase. Trezor identifies word-order and spelling errors as possible causes of an invalid backup, and notes that passphrase-protected accounts require the passphrase too. A phrase that appears correct is not proof that every expected account has been restored; consult the provider’s official troubleshooting guide before trying another method.
If the wallet is older or uses a wallet file
Do not assume that every Bitcoin wallet has a 12- or 24-word recovery phrase. Bitcoin.org notes that some wallets require a backup of the entire wallet or regular backups, while many modern deterministic wallets can restore addresses from a phrase. Preserve any existing wallet files and backups, and consult the documentation for the original wallet. A universal procedure for recovering every legacy wallet file is not established.

Use the recovery route for the specific credential and product. A wallet app PIN or biometric check is not the same as an exchange password, and neither is interchangeable with a recovery phrase or a passphrase protecting wallet accounts.
Coinbase Wallet’s guidance distinguishes PIN or biometric problems from its original email or social sign-in, passkey, recovery phrase, or applicable cloud-backup options. Use the method you actually configured; resetting a Coinbase exchange password does not give the exchange control of Coinbase Wallet funds. If an app asks for credentials you do not recognize, stop and check the provider’s official instructions. Do not enter a recovery phrase into a page reached through a direct message or an unsolicited “support” link.

If you have no working wallet, no usable backup, and no configured recovery method, there is no ordinary support process that can recreate unavailable self-custody keys. A new device, wallet app, or paid helper cannot supply the missing secret. This conclusion applies after you have checked for remaining devices, backups, and the original wallet’s actual recovery options; a lost device alone is not proof that every route is exhausted.

Be cautious of anyone promising guaranteed recovery, demanding an upfront fee, or asking you to share a phrase or private key. Bitcoin.org’s stated rule is clear: “No legitimate support representative will ever ask for your seed phrase or private key.” Its scam guidance also describes fake support and counterfeit hardware-wallet risks.

How can I reduce the chance of losing access again?
Once access is secure, make a prevention plan that matches the wallet and account you actually use. The goal is not to create more copies indiscriminately; it is to keep usable backups private, durable, and recoverable without relying on one device or one person.
- For self-custody: follow the wallet maker’s backup instructions and verify that the backup works for the wallet format. Bitcoin.org recommends durable storage and avoiding a single physical point of failure. Do not store a recovery phrase in a place accessible to strangers or send it to yourself through ordinary chat or email.
- For exchange accounts: configure an alternate verification method while you still have access. Coinbase recommends a primary and backup security key and advises checking platform compatibility. A newly purchased, unregistered key does not bypass an existing account lockout; it must be configured in advance. See Coinbase’s two-step verification overview.
- For hardware wallets: buy only from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller, verify the package, and generate your own backup during setup. Bitcoin.org warns that counterfeit devices may arrive with a phrase already known to an attacker: Bitcoin.org’s guidance on scams.
- For physical backup storage: choose a format compatible with the backup you actually have. A metal backup product designed for one format or phrase length is not automatically suitable for another. Check the wallet maker’s supported formats before buying storage or changing your backup method.
Wallet recovery technology does not create a general success-rate estimate for an individual’s case. A 2026 key-recovery literature synthesis counted papers examined, not people whose Bitcoin was recovered or the probability that a particular wallet can be restored. The practical question remains whether the specific backup or configured access route needed for your wallet still exists.

Can Bitcoin support reverse a transaction or send my funds back?
Do not treat account recovery as transaction reversal. A provider’s login or identity checks may restore access to an account, but they do not give support a way to retrieve unavailable self-custody keys or reverse a Bitcoin transaction; Bitcoin.org’s overview explains the limits of central control: Bitcoin.org’s key points about Bitcoin.
Are Bitcoin in a lost phone or hardware wallet stored on that device?
The device is used to access and authorize transactions with wallet keys; the Bitcoin is represented on the Bitcoin network rather than held as coins inside the phone. That is why a compatible backup can restore access after device loss, while losing the keys and every usable backup is a different and more serious problem.
How do I know whether a recovery service is legitimate?
Treat unsolicited offers, guaranteed outcomes, requests for recovery words, remote-access demands, and upfront-fee promises as major warning signs. Bitcoin.org says legitimate support will not ask for a seed phrase or private key and describes common scam patterns at its scam guidance page.
Does every Bitcoin wallet use a 12-word or 24-word recovery phrase?
No. Some older wallets rely on a wallet-file or full-wallet backup, while many deterministic wallets can restore from a phrase; the format depends on the wallet. Keep the original backup and consult the documentation for the specific wallet rather than converting or discarding files based on an assumed standard.
