There is no universal winner. Broad stocks are usually the portfolio’s main long-term growth engine, gold is the more established defensive diversifier, and Bitcoin is a high-volatility satellite asset whose usefulness depends on the measurement period, market regime, allocation size and your ability to absorb losses. Historical evidence shows Bitcoin can have a different return pattern from stocks and gold, but its equity correlation can rise during stress and its volatility can dominate portfolio risk at a modest capital weight. Treat the choice as a question of portfolio role and risk budget—not a contest to find one asset that is always “best.”
The figures below are historical observations from Fidelity, BlackRock, J.P. Morgan and a 2024 academic study. They use different dates, benchmarks and portfolio assumptions, so they illustrate trade-offs rather than a forecast or personalized investment advice.

What does diversification actually require?
Diversification is more than collecting assets with a low historical correlation. A useful diversifier should have a return pattern that is not perfectly tied to the rest of the portfolio, a volatility level you can tolerate, and behavior that helps during the specific stress you are trying to manage. An asset that usually moves independently but falls sharply when equities fall may diversify average returns without protecting your spending plan at the moment protection matters.
Correlation is a statistical description of how two returns moved together over a chosen window. It is not a permanent characteristic, a guarantee of negative performance when another asset rises, or a promise that an asset will hedge a crash. The studies cited here use different frequencies and periods; their results should not be combined into one precise ranking.

Are broad stocks the portfolio’s main growth exposure?
Yes. A diversified stock allocation is the comparison’s core growth exposure because it represents ownership of many businesses and their potential earnings growth. That role is different from holding a few high-growth technology shares: a broad index spreads company-specific risk, while a concentrated basket can behave more like a single factor or sector bet.
Stocks can still be the dominant source of portfolio volatility even when they are broadly diversified. A stock allocation is therefore not a “safe” anchor; it is the engine that normally supplies long-horizon growth and the risk that a defensive holding is intended to offset. The relevant comparison is broad equities versus broad equities plus diversifiers, not a handful of individual shares versus Bitcoin or gold.
When broad stocks fit best
- You have a long time horizon and can remain invested through substantial drawdowns.
- Your primary objective is growth in purchasing power rather than short-term capital stability.
- You want one core allocation that can be diversified across companies, sectors and regions instead of relying on a single asset’s narrative.
What broad stocks cannot promise
- They do not provide a reliable hedge against an equity-market decline.
- A broad index can still fall with the global economy or a widespread valuation shock.
- Replacing a diversified equity allocation with a concentrated stock position changes the risk being analyzed; conclusions about “stocks” should not be applied automatically to one company.
Is gold the stronger defensive diversifier?
In the cited evidence, gold has the stronger defensive record. BlackRock measured a 0.19 correlation between gold and stocks for 2022 through the first quarter of 2026, lower than the 0.53 Bitcoin–S&P 500 correlation in the same analysis. J.P. Morgan’s stress-period sample also found gold held up materially better than Bitcoin when global equities were in a sharp decline.
Gold is not guaranteed to rise when stocks fall. In J.P. Morgan’s definition—rolling four-week declines of more than 5% in the MSCI World—gold was still down in 55% of the periods studied. Its appeal is relative: it has historically behaved more defensively in the cited sample, not that it wins every month or every crisis.
What gold contributes
- A return stream driven by factors different from corporate earnings, which can reduce dependence on equity outcomes.
- A lower stock correlation in the BlackRock window than the correlation reported for Bitcoin.
- A track record of better average performance than Bitcoin in the J.P. Morgan risk-off periods examined.
Gold’s trade-offs
- Gold can decline alongside stocks, as the 55% down-period share demonstrates.
- It does not provide the same direct claim on business cash flows that equities do.
- The correlation measured in one window can change in another; low correlation should be treated as an observation, not a permanent property.
Can Bitcoin diversify a stock-and-gold portfolio?
Bitcoin can add a distinct return stream, but it should be treated as a speculative or satellite allocation rather than a dependable crash hedge. Fidelity measured a 0.53 correlation between Bitcoin and stocks and 0.26 with bonds over its most recent three-year period through March 31, 2024. BlackRock also reported a 0.53 Bitcoin–S&P 500 correlation for 2022 through the first quarter of 2026. Those readings are not independent of equities, and the relationship can strengthen during market stress.

Bitcoin and gold are not interchangeable. BlackRock’s monthly-return analysis for 2022–2026 found a 0.10 correlation between them, indicating that each may respond to different drivers. A low Bitcoin–gold correlation does not make Bitcoin a substitute for gold’s defensive role; it means that combining them can create two different kinds of diversification, each with its own risk.

A 2024 academic study identified a structural break around the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Bitcoin’s correlations with traditional assets increased afterward, and its ability to improve the efficient frontier weakened. This finding challenges the idea that Bitcoin’s early history of low correlations is a permanent feature.
In calm markets, a new return stream can improve the range of portfolio outcomes. In a liquidity shock, investors may sell several risky assets together, causing correlations to rise just when diversification is most needed. Bitcoin’s history supports the possibility of diversification, not a standing promise of independence from stocks.
How did Bitcoin, gold and equities behave during equity stress?
J.P. Morgan defined a risk-off episode as a rolling four-week decline of more than 5% in the MSCI World. In that historical sample through January 30, 2026, Bitcoin was down 93% of the time, compared with 55% for gold. Average returns were a 13% loss for Bitcoin, a 0.4% gain for gold and an 8% loss for equities.
| Asset | Share of analyzed risk-off periods that were down | Average return in those periods | What the result indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin | 93% | -13% | Low average correlation did not translate into reliable downside protection |
| Gold | 55% | +0.4% | More defensive on average, while still capable of losses |
| Equities | Not stated as a down-period share in the cited summary | -8% | The stress definition is based on a global-equity decline |
These observations describe one historical sample, not a rule that Bitcoin will always fall more or gold will always rise. They do show why a low correlation number should not be used alone to label an asset a hedge. If your main objective is cushioning a stock shock, the cited evidence favors gold’s defensive behavior over Bitcoin’s.

Why can a small Bitcoin holding dominate portfolio risk?
Bitcoin’s volatility is unusually high relative to broad equities and gold. J.P. Morgan states that its one-year volatility remained more than twice that of those assets. In the firm’s balanced-portfolio illustration, a 5% Bitcoin allocation contributed 13% of total portfolio risk, while a 5% gold allocation contributed 2%.
Fidelity’s historical simulation reached a similar practical conclusion from a different setup. Replacing 5% of the stock portion—or 2.5% from stocks and 2.5% from bonds—with Bitcoin produced a 17.8% contribution to portfolio volatility. Fidelity also reported that the increase in risk was nonlinear as the Bitcoin weight rose: adding each extra percentage point did not have a constant effect.
BlackRock’s risk-budgeting framework offers a scale comparison rather than a recommendation: in a 60/40 portfolio, a 1–2% Bitcoin allocation contributed overall risk at levels comparable to a single “Magnificent 7” stock. The implication is that capital weight and risk weight are different measurements. A position that looks tiny on an allocation chart can be meaningful in the portfolio’s drawdown experience.
How should you size Bitcoin if diversification is the goal?
There is no universal percentage. Sizing should begin with the amount of portfolio loss you could tolerate, your liquidity needs, your time horizon and your willingness to hold through a large drawdown. The historical 1–2% range cited by BlackRock is a risk-budgeting observation, not a prescription for every investor.

Decide whether the position is intended to seek additional long-term upside, diversify return sources, or provide a hedge. Bitcoin’s historical stress behavior makes it unsuitable as a stand-alone promise of crash protection.
- Set a loss budget. Consider how a severe Bitcoin decline would affect the entire portfolio and your near-term spending. Use portfolio-level risk, not the cash percentage alone.
- Check concentration. Add the Bitcoin position to existing technology, speculative-asset and single-stock exposures. A small Bitcoin allocation can overlap with other high-volatility bets.
- Choose a rebalancing rule. Decide in advance how often you will restore the target weight and what will trigger an exception. Without a rule, a rapidly rising asset can become an unintended concentration.
- Stress the plan. Review whether you could keep the position after a sharp loss, during a liquidity emergency or when correlations with stocks rise. If the answer is no, the allocation is larger than your practical risk budget.
This framework deliberately avoids turning a historical study into a personal recommendation. The right size is the amount that fits your own ability to withstand volatility, not the number that appears in a published illustration.

Should you add Bitcoin to a portfolio that already owns stocks and gold?
Possibly, but only if the portfolio can absorb Bitcoin’s risk without undermining its primary objective. A stock-and-gold mix already combines a growth engine with a more established defensive diversifier. Bitcoin adds a third return stream and potential upside, yet it can also increase total risk far more than its capital weight suggests.
| Investor priority | More consistent fit | Why | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long-term growth with broad diversification | Broad stocks as the core | They provide the main exposure to business earnings and economic growth | Large equity drawdowns remain possible |
| Defensive behavior during equity stress | Gold | The cited risk-off sample showed smaller average losses than Bitcoin and a slight average gain | Gold still fell in more than half of those periods |
| Higher-upside satellite exposure | Small, deliberate Bitcoin allocation | It can add a return pattern that differs from stocks and gold | High volatility, rising equity correlation and nonlinear risk contribution |
| Near-term capital stability | Neither Bitcoin nor a stock-heavy mix by default | The evidence does not support Bitcoin as a reliable short-term hedge | Match the portfolio to the date the money is needed |
What implementation details can change the diversification result?
The asset label is only the beginning. The way you hold and manage exposure affects liquidity, fees, taxes, custody and rebalancing. Direct Bitcoin ownership introduces private-key and operational responsibilities; a regulated exchange-traded vehicle can simplify access but adds product structure, fees and trading considerations. Gold can be held through different structures with their own costs and tracking differences, while broad stocks are commonly accessed through diversified funds or brokerage accounts.
Before choosing an implementation, compare:
- Access and custody: who controls the asset, how accounts are secured and what happens if access is lost.
- Fees and spreads: ongoing fund expenses, trading spreads, conversion costs and any custody charges.
- Tax treatment: the rules for purchases, sales, distributions and account type in your country; these vary by jurisdiction and can change.
- Liquidity: how quickly you can trade at a transparent price when markets are volatile.
- Rebalancing mechanics: whether the chosen vehicle can be bought or sold in the same account and on the schedule your policy requires.
BlackRock’s analysis uses the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) and iShares Gold Trust (IAU) as representative vehicles for Bitcoin and gold exposure. Those examples identify instruments used in the analysis; they do not establish that either is suitable for every investor or jurisdiction.

What are the main evidence limits?
The studies do not measure the same thing. Fidelity’s correlation and simulation work uses data through March 31, 2024. BlackRock’s cited correlation analysis runs through March 31, 2026, while J.P. Morgan’s stress-period figures use data through January 30, 2026. The samples also differ in benchmark, return frequency, portfolio mix and rebalancing assumptions.
Historical correlations and simulated allocations cannot establish which asset will deliver the best future risk-adjusted return. Regulation, market structure, adoption, fund flows and investor behavior may change. A future Bitcoin–stock relationship could be higher or lower than the periods studied, and gold’s defensive behavior could differ from its historical pattern.

The most defensible conclusion is therefore conditional: use broad stocks for core growth, gold when defensive diversification is the priority, and Bitcoin only as a risk-budgeted satellite position whose potential diversification benefit is worth its volatility to you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Bitcoin replace gold as a hedge against a stock-market crash?
The cited evidence does not support treating Bitcoin as a replacement for gold’s defensive role. Bitcoin was down more often and by more on average in J.P. Morgan’s analyzed equity-stress periods, while gold still had losing periods but behaved better overall.
Why can Bitcoin and stocks move together if Bitcoin is a different asset?
Different assets can share the same liquidity, interest-rate and risk-appetite drivers. Correlation is calculated over a defined window, so a relationship that looked weak in one era can strengthen when investors sell risky holdings together.
Does a 1% Bitcoin allocation guarantee low portfolio risk?
No. BlackRock’s 1–2% observation describes a historical risk contribution in a specific 60/40 framework, not a guarantee. Your other holdings, Bitcoin’s current volatility and the rebalancing method can produce a different result.
Should conservative investors hold any Bitcoin?
Only if they can tolerate a substantial loss without jeopardizing near-term spending or their investment plan. The historical stress evidence shows Bitcoin is not a dependable short-term stabilizer, so a conservative portfolio should not rely on it for protection.
How often should a Bitcoin allocation be rebalanced?
The evidence does not establish one universally correct schedule. Set a calendar or threshold rule that keeps the position within your predefined risk budget, and account for taxes, trading costs and the possibility of unusually rapid price moves.
