To check a BioWare game’s online service, identify the exact title, platform and feature first, then open EA Help Server Status. Search for the game and inspect both the game entry and the relevant Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo or Steam service. If the title is missing, check EA’s Service Updates register and the game’s own support page before concluding that it has shut down. Star Wars: The Old Republic is the exception: its official Server Status page shows each available server, its status and its type. A failed login by itself is not proof of a permanent closure; platform outages, account-linking errors, DNS, cache and local-network problems can produce the same symptom.
What does “BioWare servers” actually refer to?
There is no single switch for every BioWare game. Online availability is tied to a particular title, platform, region, mode and service component. Anthem, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Mass Effect 3, Dragon Age: Inquisition and Star Wars: The Old Republic have different support pages and service histories.

A game may also use several back-end services. Multiplayer matchmaking, EA-account authentication, cloud data, a companion application, screenshot uploads and a news or headquarters service can be retired independently. Always write down these three details before checking:
- Title and edition: for example, Mass Effect: Andromeda rather than “Mass Effect.”
- Platform: PC through the EA app or Steam, Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo.
- Feature: multiplayer, login, companion app, screenshots or another online function.
That precision prevents a status result for one edition or component from being mistaken for the status of the whole franchise.

Which official page should you check first?
Use the source that matches the question. EA Help is the broad first check; a platform page confirms whether the console or PC network is functioning; EA’s Service Updates register records documented retirements; and SWTOR’s own page provides per-server information.

EA describes its status page as a real-time check for EA games and platforms: “If you’re having issues connecting to the server for your EA game or platform, check its real-time status to see if it’s down.”

Follow these steps in order. They separate a temporary outage from a platform failure and from a documented retirement.
- Name the exact game, platform and mode. Record whether you are trying to play, sign in, matchmake or use a companion feature. Do not search only for “BioWare servers.”
- Open EA Help Server Status. Search for the exact title or service. Read the individual game entry rather than relying on a general EA indicator.
- Check the platform provider. Open the status page for Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo or Steam, depending on where the game is running. Platform authentication or store outages can block a game while EA’s own service remains operational.
- Check EA Service Updates. Look for the title, platform and specific component in the retirement register. A dated entry is evidence of a planned or completed shutdown; it is not interchangeable with a temporary incident notice.
- Open the title’s EA Help hub. Follow its account-linking and connection instructions, and look for a notice that distinguishes multiplayer from other web services.
- Use the dedicated SWTOR page when applicable. It lists each available SWTOR server, its current status and its type, making it more specific than a generic EA result.
- Record what each page says. Note the time, platform and component. This is useful when a status changes between checks or when contacting support.
How should I interpret a green, red or missing status?
Green or operational
A green result means the publisher or platform is not reporting a broad incident at that moment. It does not validate your EA-account link, local DNS, router, game cache or installed files. Continue with local troubleshooting if only your connection fails.
Red, degraded or maintenance
A red or degraded result supports a temporary service problem. Wait for the publisher or platform to clear the incident, then restart the game and sign in again. Avoid repeatedly changing account or network settings while a confirmed outage is active.

The title is not listed
An absent title is inconclusive. EA may list a service under a different edition or component, or the game may have a separate support page. Search the Service Updates register and the game’s help hub before treating the omission as a shutdown announcement.

A community post says it is offline
Community reports can reveal an issue quickly, but they are not a permanent-retirement record. Confirm the report against EA’s status page, the platform status page and the dated Service Updates entry.
What do EA’s current records say about major BioWare services?
The entries below illustrate why title and platform must be kept together. They are status-register records, not a blanket statement about every release in a series.
Anthem
EA’s update announced that Anthem’s live servers would be sunset in January 2026. The current EA register lists Anthem on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and EA App — January 12, 2026. That date applies to the platforms named in the entry. It should not be used to infer anything about Mass Effect or Dragon Age services.
Dragon Age: Inquisition on PlayStation 3
EA lists Dragon Age: Inquisition for PlayStation 3 — April 28, 2026. The wording is platform-specific; it does not establish that the PC, Xbox, PlayStation 4 or other editions ended online service on the same date. Check the exact edition and feature you use.

Dragon Age: Origins screenshot service
The register lists Dragon Age Origins – MP Screenshots Server — October 20, 2022. This identifies a screenshot-service retirement, not the end of every form of Dragon Age: Origins play. A single-player campaign can have a different service dependency from image uploads.
Dragon Age Inquisition HQ
EA lists Dragon Age Inquisition HQ — September 1, 2020. Treat “HQ” as its own web service. The entry does not automatically mean that the complete game or all multiplayer functions became unavailable.
Mass Effect: Andromeda
EA maintains a current Mass Effect: Andromeda support hub with account-linking, connection and player-reporting resources. That support presence is useful for troubleshooting, but it is not proof of uninterrupted live service. Pair it with the current EA status result and the platform check.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition
EA’s help guidance for Mass Effect Legendary Edition directs players with connectivity problems to EA Help Server Status. The collection should not be confused with questions about older Mass Effect online services: identify the specific game and mode before drawing a conclusion.
Star Wars: The Old Republic
SWTOR has an official status page that lists its available servers individually, including each server’s status and type. Use that page as the primary operational check instead of assuming that a broad EA indicator describes every SWTOR condition.

How can I tell a permanent shutdown from a temporary outage?
Use the time signal and scope of the notice. A live status page reports a current incident; a dated Service Updates entry documents a retirement. Then compare the scope: platform, edition, mode and component.
- Temporary outage: a current red, degraded or maintenance notice, often without a final retirement date.
- Permanent retirement: a dated EA Service Updates entry naming the title or component and, where relevant, the affected platforms.
- Uncertain result: a missing listing, an isolated login failure or a community report without an official retirement record.
EA cautions that “If you’re playing an older game, its online servers may be shut down.” Its Service Updates policy also notes that “In some instances, where the online services for a particular game may no longer be available or supported, the game may still be played and enjoyed offline.” Offline availability depends on the title and the feature that was retired, so do not assume that every mode survives or that every mode disappears.
EA gives a general policy context of fewer than 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles when discussing older-service retirements. That is not a current BioWare player count, an uptime percentage or evidence about any individual game’s population.
What should I do when every status page is green?
A green publisher and platform status shifts the investigation to your account, device and network. Work from the least disruptive checks to the more specific ones.
- Confirm the EA account link. Make sure the console or Steam identity is linked to the intended EA account. An old or mismatched link can block authentication even when servers are healthy.
- Fully restart the game and platform. Close the game rather than leaving it suspended, then restart the console or PC and try a new sign-in.
- Restart the router. Power it off, wait for it to finish disconnecting, then restore service. Test another online application to see whether the problem extends beyond the game.
- Check DNS and cache conditions. A stale DNS response or local cache can direct you to a failed endpoint. Use your platform’s supported network-diagnostics and cache-clearing procedures; avoid deleting saved data unless the game’s support instructions explicitly require it.
- Close competing applications. VPNs, overlays, downloads and background network tools can interfere with authentication or matchmaking. Close them temporarily and retry.
- Read the game’s EA Help connection article. Apply the title-specific steps and collect any error code, platform, region and time of failure before contacting support.
If another network works but your normal connection does not, the fault is likely local or ISP-related. If several players on different networks fail while official pages remain green, report the pattern through the game’s support route; status dashboards can lag behind a newly developing incident.

Which common checks give misleading answers?
- Searching for “BioWare servers” as one service: the brand covers multiple games and independent components.
- Using one failed login as proof of closure: account, DNS, cache, router and platform failures can look identical.
- Reading a platform shutdown as a universal shutdown: a PlayStation 3 entry does not automatically cover PC or newer consoles.
- Confusing a support page with live uptime: a maintained help hub supplies procedures, not a guarantee that every endpoint is operating.
- Assuming a physical disc proves online support: ownership of a game, a guide or networking hardware cannot show that a publisher service is active.
- Using a broad franchise result: Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Mass Effect 3 and Mass Effect: Andromeda are separate checks with different online features.
What evidence should I save before contacting support?
Capture the exact game and edition, platform, mode, region, error message, time of failure and the result shown by EA Help and the platform status page. Include whether another network or account can connect, but do not publish your EA credentials. This information lets support distinguish a service incident from an account-linking or local-network fault without asking you to repeat every preliminary check.
How do I make a reliable final determination?
Call a service “active” only when the exact title, platform and feature have no retirement entry and the relevant live-status pages are operational. Call it “retired” when EA’s register explicitly names that title or component, platform and date. In every other case, describe the result as an outage or an unresolved connection problem until the official records narrow it further.

Does an EA game disappear from the status page when its servers shut down?
Not necessarily. EA can list a game under a platform, edition or separate service component, and an unlisted title is not a shutdown notice. Check the Service Updates register and the game-specific help page for a dated, scoped retirement record.
Can I still play a BioWare game offline after an online feature is retired?
Sometimes. EA says some games remain playable offline when particular online services are no longer available, but the result depends on whether the campaign, authentication, saves or other features require that service. Verify the affected component rather than assuming the whole title is offline or online.
Why does SWTOR show server details that other BioWare games do not?

What if only the companion app or screenshot feature fails?
