The right choice depends on whether you want a spouse who can keep adventuring with you, a convenient home-based partner, a particular prerequisite, or a specific role-playing relationship. For a traveling Dragonborn, Aela the Huntress, Jenassa, Lydia, and Mjoll the Lioness are the strongest starting points because they remain follower-capable after marriage. No. Bethesda does not publish a ranking of marriage partners, and no in-game statistic makes one woman universally superior. A 2026 community guide counts 66 marriage candidates in total, including 30 women, and records each candidate’s location, follower status, and prerequisite. Those are guide-reported mechanics, not an official ranking.
A practical way to choose is to decide what you want your spouse to do after the wedding:

Why Jenassa is the quickest practical route
Jenassa is available in Whiterun and can be unlocked by hiring her at least once. The reported 500-gold hire cost makes her convenient for a character who has money but has not completed a major questline. Her appeal is efficiency rather than a long prerequisite: recruit her, satisfy the marriage condition, and you still have a follower-capable spouse.
Why Lydia suits a first character
Lydia’s requirement follows a familiar early-game path: complete Dragon Rising, then purchase Breezehome. That makes her particularly convenient if Whiterun is your main base and you intend to use the house anyway. She is less convenient if you do not want to spend gold on Breezehome or prefer a spouse with a different faction identity.

Why Mjoll is worth the Riften trip
Mjoll becomes marriageable after Grimsever’s Return. Her prerequisite is more involved than Jenassa’s hire condition, but the reward is a follower-capable spouse whom the cited follower reference describes as essential. Which non-follower wives are best for a home-focused character?
A non-follower spouse remains at a home or settlement instead of joining dungeon runs. That can be preferable if you want a reliable domestic presence, a particular town, or a relationship that supports role-play rather than combat.

How do I marry someone in Skyrim?
The ceremony follows the same sequence for every candidate. You must establish the marriage system with Maramal, complete the candidate’s personal requirement, wear the Amulet of Mara while proposing, and then attend the arranged ceremony.
- Speak with Maramal. Find Maramal at the Temple of Mara in Riften and ask about marriage. This conversation unlocks the relevant dialogue; simply wearing an amulet without having this conversation does not unlock proposals.
- Obtain an Amulet of Mara. Get the amulet from Maramal, then equip it. The amulet is the visible signal that you are seeking marriage.
- Complete your chosen candidate’s prerequisite. Examples include the Companions questline for Aela, hiring Jenassa, Dragon Rising plus purchasing Breezehome for Lydia, Grimsever’s Return for Mjoll, one mammoth tusk for Ysolda, and The Golden Claw for Camilla.
- Talk to the candidate while wearing the amulet. Once the prerequisite is complete and the marriage dialogue is available, select the proposal option.
- Arrange and attend the ceremony. Follow the wedding instructions and return for the ceremony at the appointed time. The marriage is not complete until you attend it.
If the proposal option is missing, check the order rather than repeatedly equipping the amulet. Confirm that you spoke with Maramal first, that the candidate’s prerequisite is actually complete, and that you are wearing the amulet when you speak to the candidate.

- Spouse income: the reported amount is about 100 gold or more; treat this as a guide-reported game mechanic rather than a guaranteed official figure for every situation.
- Lover’s Comfort: sleeping where your spouse is present can grant 15% faster skill improvement for eight hours.
- Follower access when applicable: a spouse marked as follower-capable can continue adventuring with you, unlike a non-follower spouse who remains at home or in a settlement.

Where will my spouse live after the wedding?
You can have a spouse move into a purchased home, but the housing arrangement determines where the spouse and any children stay. - You bought Breezehome for Lydia: the house already forms part of her marriage requirement, so it is the natural first option for a Whiterun-based character.
- You want a spouse to remain in a particular settlement: a non-follower candidate’s home location is central to the role-play, because she will not accompany you into the field.
- You have children or several properties: the selected home affects where the family stays, so choose for convenience rather than assuming every house arrangement behaves the same way.
A follower-capable spouse does not have to be taken on every trip. Follower status gives you the option to recruit the spouse for adventuring; it does not require you to abandon a preferred home base.

For a Riverwood story: Camilla

Can you divorce or remarry in Skyrim?
