The best way to stream lossless music to a hi-fi system is to use a wired connection or a network streamer that explicitly supports your music service’s current lossless mode. Check the whole route—from the track and service, through the app or casting protocol and device, to the DAC and amplifier input. A lossless setting at the source cannot make a route lossless if another part of the chain compresses or limits it.

What do you need to stream lossless music to a hi-fi?

You need three things: a service offering lossless audio for the track you want to play, a playback route that preserves the service’s available format, and a way to connect the playback device to your amplifier or receiver. That connection may be USB, optical, coaxial, HDMI, or analogue, depending on your equipment.

“Lossless” describes audio that is encoded without discarding audio data in the way a lossy format does. It does not mean that every song is available at the same resolution, that every playback route preserves the source format, or that a higher sample rate will necessarily sound better in your room. Service format ceilings are technical specifications, not listening-test results.

Think of the system as a chain:

  • Track and service: Is the track available in a lossless format, and is the account or plan eligible for that mode?
  • App or protocol: Does the connection method support the service’s lossless stream, or does it limit or compress it?
  • Playback device and firmware: Does the streamer, computer, phone, or receiver support the service and current lossless feature?
  • DAC and output: Can the device’s DAC or external DAC handle the format, and does it connect to the amplifier?
  • Amplifier and speakers: Can the hi-fi accept that connection and play it?

A product’s headline maximum—such as 24-bit/192 kHz—only describes a ceiling under specified conditions. It does not guarantee that every service, app, input, or protocol reaches that ceiling.

Which connection route should you use?

Choose the route that fits both your current equipment and the service you use. A network streamer is often the simplest way to add streaming to an existing amplifier; a computer connected by USB is a practical alternative when it is already near the system.

Route Good fit What to check
Network streamer to amplifier You want a dedicated network device to add service playback to an existing system. Confirm support for the exact service and its current lossless mode, the streamer’s output type, and format limits for the route you plan to use.
Computer to DAC or receiver by USB A computer is already close to the hi-fi and the service has a desktop app or supported playback option. Check the operating-system and app settings, USB support, and DAC capability. Apple notes that an external DAC may be needed for playback above 48 kHz on some computers and mobile devices.
Phone or tablet to a wired DAC or receiver You want to play from a mobile device without relying on Bluetooth. Check whether the device needs an external DAC for the resolution you want and whether the cable or adapter works with the hi-fi input.
Apple TV 4K to AV receiver by HDMI You use Apple Music with a compatible Apple TV and receiver. Apple’s U.S. guidance documents this route; its cited Hi-Res Lossless support qualification is Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later).
Bluetooth Convenience matters more than preserving a lossless signal. Do not choose it when lossless transmission is the goal. Spotify says Bluetooth compresses its lossless signal before transmission; Apple says the cited AirPods and Beats Bluetooth connections are not lossless.

For an amplifier with optical or coaxial digital inputs, a streamer with a matching digital output can be a clean way to add network playback. If the amplifier has no suitable digital input, look for a streamer with analogue output, or use a compatible external DAC. Match the connection to the equipment you actually own rather than buying a DAC or cable before checking whether it is needed.

How do you choose the right route for Apple Music?

For Apple Music, start with a supported wired connection to a receiver, powered speakers, or an external DAC. Apple’s U.S. support guidance documents lossless playback through supported devices and wired connections; it also documents Apple TV 4K connected to an AV receiver over HDMI.

Apple describes ALAC in most of the catalog, from 16-bit/44.1 kHz CD quality up to 24-bit/192 kHz. It classifies Lossless as up to 24-bit/48 kHz and Hi-Res Lossless as up to 24-bit/192 kHz on supported playback routes. Those are catalog and format ceilings, not a promise that every track or connection will play at the highest resolution.

On iPhone, iPad, Android, and some Mac and PC setups, Apple says an external DAC may be needed to listen above 48 kHz. The precise requirement depends on the device and connection, so check Apple’s support guidance and the DAC’s specifications before assuming a phone’s built-in output supports Hi-Res Lossless.

Apple warns that streaming lossless uses significantly more data and downloaded lossless music uses more storage. If you use a mobile data plan or have limited device storage, review the app’s audio quality and download settings before enabling the highest available option.

How do you set up Spotify lossless for a hi-fi?

Spotify Premium lossless is available on compatible devices, but you must enable the quality setting on each device you use. Spotify announced the gradual rollout on September 10, 2025, and said on October 6, 2025 that availability had reached more than 50 markets. Its announced ceiling is up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC.

  1. Check availability and device support. Confirm that lossless is available for your account and market and that the playback device supports it. Spotify says compatibility, firmware, track availability, connection type, and network stability can affect playback.
  2. Set the audio quality on the device. In the Spotify app, open the audio quality settings and select lossless for the relevant connection type—Wi-Fi, cellular, or downloads. Spotify says the setting must be enabled separately on each device.
  3. Choose a suitable route. Spotify recommends Wi-Fi and wired speakers or headphones, or Spotify Connect to a compatible device. For a third-party device, Spotify’s guidance says to connect through Spotify Connect and select lossless in that device’s quality settings.
  4. Check the receiving device. Update its firmware if needed, confirm that it supports Spotify lossless, and look for its own quality setting or playback indicator. A general Spotify Connect listing alone is not proof that a particular product supports lossless.
  5. Check network stability. Spotify recommends a steady connection of 1.5–2 Mbps. Treat this as Spotify’s recommendation, not a universal minimum for every service or playback setup.

Spotify explicitly says Bluetooth does not provide enough bandwidth for its lossless transmission and compresses the signal before sending it. If preserving Spotify’s lossless stream matters, use a wired route or a compatible Spotify Connect device instead.

How do you get lossless playback from TIDAL?

On TIDAL, choose a compatible playback device and use the service’s FLAC-based quality options. TIDAL says Max can reach 24-bit/192 kHz HiRes FLAC, while High is 16-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. Low is AAC up to 320 kbps, so it is not the lossless setting.

Max is an upper limit, not a guarantee for every track. TIDAL says the available format depends on whether the track is offered in that format and whether the playback device supports it. Check the device’s DAC capability and the playback information shown for the specific track rather than assuming that selecting Max means 24-bit/192 kHz playback every time.

TIDAL recommends wired or Wi-Fi playback and checking the listening device’s DAC. If you use a network streamer, verify support for TIDAL’s current service and the particular connection method, such as TIDAL Connect, rather than relying only on the product’s general network-streaming claims.

TIDAL’s format update, dated January 9, 2026, says MQA and 360 Reality Audio were no longer accessible through TIDAL applications and integrations as of July 24, 2024; FLAC is its stereo format going forward. Older advice to buy an MQA decoder specifically for TIDAL therefore does not reflect the service’s current documented stereo format.

What should you check before buying a network streamer?

Compare the model’s service support and outputs against your system, not just the DAC chip name or maximum format printed on its product page. Support can be protocol-specific and may depend on firmware.

  • Service and feature: Does the exact model support your service’s current lossless mode, not merely a related service or generic streaming?
  • Protocol: Does it play through the service’s own Connect feature, the manufacturer’s app, AirPlay, Chromecast, Roon, or USB? These routes may have different limits.
  • Output to your amplifier: Does the streamer have the analogue, optical, coaxial, or other output your system accepts?
  • Format over that route: What is the documented maximum through the exact protocol and output you will use?
  • Firmware and controls: Is the device’s firmware current, and do you prefer controlling playback from the service app, streamer app, or another supported interface?
  • Network reliability: Does the streamer have a reliable way to join your home network where the hi-fi is located?

Manufacturer specifications demonstrate why the connection method matters. Cambridge Audio’s EVO table, initially published May 16, 2024 and revised August 20, 2025, lists different ceilings for different routes on that product: TIDAL Connect and selected app, Roon, and USB routes reach up to 24-bit/192 kHz; AirPlay 2 is listed at 16-bit/44 kHz and Chromecast at 24-bit/48 kHz. Its Qobuz listings also vary by route. These are EVO- and firmware-specific figures, not universal limits for every streamer or every implementation of those protocols.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same table’s Spotify entry may predate Spotify’s current lossless rollout. For Spotify, use the service’s current support guidance and verify the exact model’s up-to-date firmware and lossless capability rather than treating an older manufacturer table as definitive.

LUMIN documentation provides another example of a product-level feature list: it lists Qobuz Connect, TIDAL Connect, Spotify Connect, AirPlay compatibility, and Roon Ready. That list is useful when checking that specific device documentation, but it is not a guarantee that every product from that maker—or every device supporting the same protocols—has identical capabilities.

How can you confirm that the signal is actually lossless?

Check playback status at the service and, where available, on the receiving device. The app’s selected quality setting only tells you what you requested; the track, route, network, device support, and firmware can still affect what is delivered.

  1. Confirm that the selected track is available in a lossless format on your service.
  2. Set the service’s lossless or highest suitable quality option for the device and connection you are using.
  3. Use the supported route: for example, Spotify Connect on a compatible third-party device or a wired connection to a DAC.
  4. Check the playback screen or device display for the actual format or quality, if the service or device provides one.
  5. If the reported format is lower than expected, check the route-specific device specification, app setting, firmware, and network before changing hardware.

Do not infer a lossless connection from a streamer’s maximum specification alone. A model may support a high-resolution format over USB but have a lower ceiling over AirPlay or Chromecast, or may support a service without supporting that service’s current lossless mode.

What are the common lossless-streaming problems?

Most problems come from a mismatch between the requested quality and one link in the playback chain. Check the simplest causes first: settings, track availability, route support, and firmware.

The app does not show a lossless option

  • Check whether your account, market, and device are eligible for the service’s lossless feature.
  • For Spotify, verify the feature is supported on that device and enable it on that device; the setting does not automatically carry over to other devices.
  • For TIDAL, remember that the available quality depends on the individual track and playback device.

The stream plays, but at a lower quality than expected

  • Check the track’s available format and the service’s selected quality.
  • Look up the route-specific ceiling for the protocol and product combination; do not substitute the device’s maximum headline rate.
  • Check whether the DAC or receiving device supports the format and whether current firmware is installed.
  • For Spotify, check network stability and the receiving device’s own Connect quality controls.

Bluetooth is the only connection currently in use

Switch to a wired connection or a supported network streaming route if lossless transmission is the objective. The services’ guidance cited here does not treat the listed Bluetooth routes as lossless: Spotify says it compresses its signal for Bluetooth, and Apple says the cited wireless AirPods and Beats Bluetooth connections are not lossless.

A phone or computer will not play above 48 kHz

Check the DAC in the playback device and the output path. Apple says an external DAC may be required for playback above 48 kHz on iPhone, iPad, Android, and some Mac and PC setups. A service’s 192 kHz ceiling alone does not establish that a particular device can deliver that rate.

Does hi-res lossless automatically sound better?

No. The cited service and manufacturer specifications establish format ceilings, not a guaranteed audible difference for a particular listener, recording, room, or hi-fi. Lossless playback can preserve the encoded data, while the practical result still depends on the recording and the rest of the playback chain.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a sensible setup, first make sure the route is stable, supports the service, and connects correctly to your system. If you want to compare formats, use the same track and playback level where possible; do not treat a higher sample-rate number as proof of an audible improvement.

Which setup is the best fit for your system?

Use this decision path to narrow the options without buying equipment your system may not need.

  1. Your amplifier has optical or coaxial input: Consider a network streamer with a matching digital output. Verify the service, current lossless mode, and route-specific limit before choosing the device.
  2. Your amplifier has no digital input: Look for a compatible streamer with analogue output, or use an external DAC that connects to the amplifier. Confirm the output type before purchasing.
  3. Your computer is already beside the hi-fi: Try a wired USB connection to a compatible DAC or receiver using the service’s supported desktop playback option. Check the computer and DAC settings for the desired format.
  4. You use Apple Music and an AV receiver: A documented wired route is a straightforward choice; Apple also documents Apple TV 4K to an AV receiver over HDMI, subject to the model and quality qualifications in Apple’s support guidance.
  5. You use Spotify: Enable lossless on the device you play from and use a supported lossless device, preferably by a wired route or compatible Spotify Connect.
  6. You use TIDAL: Use the FLAC quality setting supported by the specific track and device, and check the DAC and route if you want HiRes playback.

Before committing to a device, compare its current service list, firmware, specific protocol support, and amplifier outputs. Convenience matters too: a technically capable route is less useful if it is unreliable on your network or awkward to control.
