Short answer: eero can pass VPN-encrypted traffic, but an eero router cannot currently run a network-wide VPN client itself. To protect an entire eero network, place a compatible VPN-client router between your modem and eero. Otherwise, install VPN apps on individual devices; eero Plus subscribers can also use Guardian VPN on up to five supported devices. The four services most often shortlisted for router use are NordVPN, ExpressVPN, IPVanish and Proton VPN, but there is no reliable, eero-specific performance test proving one is the overall winner. Does eero support VPNs?
eero supports VPN passthrough, not VPN-client operation inside the eero system. This distinction matters because “VPN for eero” can describe two very different goals. If you only need to protect a laptop or phone, an app is the simplest route. If you want devices that cannot install VPN software—such as many smart-home products, streaming boxes or game consoles—to use the tunnel, the VPN client must run on a router before eero.
What network-wide eero protection looks like

The second router establishes the VPN tunnel. eero then distributes the already-encrypted connection over its mesh. The exact router model and firmware must support a VPN client and the protocol configuration supplied by the provider.
Which VPNs are the best choices for an eero setup?
There is no defensible, eero-specific “best five” ranking in the available evidence. A router comparison updated August 12, 2026, shortlisted ExpressVPN, NordVPN, IPVanish and Proton VPN after testing services on a Linksys WRT3200ACM running DD-WRT and OpenWrt. Those results describe that Linksys test environment—not an eero mesh—and do not establish performance through any particular eero model. The table below therefore treats the names as documented candidates for a separate VPN router, not as tested eero winners.

The practical conclusion is not that one of these four is universally superior. It is that compatibility should be the first filter. A service that works on your chosen router with a documented configuration is more useful than a highly rated service that cannot be installed on that hardware.
How should you choose a VPN-capable router for eero?
Buy the router for its VPN-client capability, not merely because a listing says “VPN router.” The phrase can refer to VPN passthrough, a VPN server for remote access, or a true outbound VPN client. For whole-network coverage, you need the last of these.
Check the protocol
The router must support the protocol used by the provider’s configuration. OpenVPN is explicitly required by the manual setup described in NordVPN’s guidance, while provider router documentation may also offer WireGuard. A router that supports only VPN passthrough is not enough.
Check firmware and model number
Compatibility is model- and firmware-specific. Confirm whether the router uses manufacturer firmware, DD-WRT, OpenWrt or another supported build, and whether installing third-party firmware is required. A support statement for one hardware revision does not automatically apply to another revision with a similar name.

Check the physical layout
The VPN router must sit upstream of the eero gateway. Connecting it behind eero does not automatically make eero’s other clients use that tunnel. Follow the modem-to-VPN-router-to-eero order unless the router and provider documentation explicitly describe another supported topology.
Check current availability and support
Router models, firmware packages and provider instructions change. Confirm the exact model, protocol, firmware version and configuration file requirements immediately before purchase. Also check whether the provider still supports the region and account plan you intend to use; the cited material does not establish universal pricing or availability.
How do you set up a VPN for every device on an eero network?
Use this sequence when you want the upstream router to carry the household’s VPN traffic. The labels vary by manufacturer, so use the provider’s current instructions for the exact router and firmware.
- Choose the VPN service and router together. Verify that the provider supplies a client configuration for your router’s firmware and that the router supports OpenVPN or WireGuard as required.
- Install or update the router firmware. If third-party firmware is necessary, confirm the exact hardware revision first. A failed or incompatible firmware installation can disable the router, so do not use instructions for a different model.
- Connect the hardware in the correct order. Connect the modem or upstream Ethernet feed to the VPN router’s WAN port. Connect a LAN port on that router to the eero gateway’s WAN or Internet port.
- Import or enter the provider configuration. In the router’s VPN-client section, upload the supplied configuration or enter the server, authentication and protocol settings specified for your account. Do not substitute settings from a different protocol.
- Establish the tunnel and verify its status. The router interface should show an active client connection. If it reports authentication, certificate or handshake errors, recheck the downloaded configuration and account credentials before changing eero settings.
- Start or reboot eero after the upstream router is ready. Allow eero to obtain its Internet connection from the VPN router. The eero app should continue to manage the mesh, while the upstream router handles the tunnel.
- Test several device types. Check a computer or phone, then a device that cannot run a VPN app. Confirm that each obtains Internet access through the intended router path and that the VPN client remains connected after a reboot.
This arrangement gives devices behind eero a common encrypted route, but it also makes the upstream router the control point. Changing servers, credentials or protocols normally requires logging into that router rather than opening a VPN app on each device.

Use per-device apps when only selected computers, phones or tablets need protection, or when you want the provider’s full app feature set and simpler server switching. eero states that it can pass this encrypted traffic, but each supported device must be installed and configured separately.
- Devices without the VPN app remain outside that protection.
- Every device must support the provider’s application and operating system.
- Changing a VPN location is usually easier in an app than in a router administration panel.
- App-only features may not be available when the service is configured at router level.
This approach avoids buying another router and avoids changing the eero topology. It is usually the least complicated answer when the household’s requirement is “protect these few devices,” not “route every client through one tunnel.”

What does eero Plus Guardian VPN cover?
eero Plus includes Guardian VPN for up to five supported devices. It is a device-level option, not a VPN client built into the eero router and not a way to place every eero client behind one network-wide tunnel. Check device support and the current eero Plus terms before relying on it for a larger household.
What are the main trade-offs of a router VPN?
A router VPN can cover devices that cannot run native applications, but convenience and throughput can suffer. Provider guidance warns that router use may reduce speed, make VPN management less convenient and remove many features available in the provider’s apps.

Speed and capacity
Encryption is performed by the router, so the result depends on its processor, firmware and connection. The available evidence does not provide a controlled speed result for an eero-plus-upstream-router combination. Treat any generic speed claim as non-transferable unless it was measured with your exact hardware and configuration.
Management
One router profile can protect many devices, but changing a location or excluding one client may require router-level configuration. A household that frequently switches servers may prefer apps on selected devices.
Feature differences
Provider apps can expose options that are absent from manual router configurations. Before choosing the router path, list the features you actually use and confirm that the router instructions support them.
Failure impact
If the upstream tunnel fails, devices that depend on that route may lose Internet access or fall back to a non-VPN path, depending on the router’s behavior. Check whether the firmware offers a kill-switch or fail-closed setting, and verify its operation with the provider’s current documentation rather than assuming it is enabled.

How do NordVPN and eero work together?
NordVPN cannot run through eero’s native firmware as a built-in client according to its router support guidance. The workable pattern is a separate router with compatible firmware and an OpenVPN client, placed before eero. Confirm the exact model and firmware before attempting manual setup; “eero-compatible” in a listing should not be interpreted as native NordVPN support.
Is ExpressVPN’s dedicated router hardware still available?
ExpressVPN’s support material documents selected routers and manual configurations, but it says Aircove is no longer available for purchase. Choose currently supported hardware rather than assuming that a discontinued dedicated product can be ordered or supported in your region.
Why is there no reliable five-provider eero ranking?
The router comparison cited for this topic tested 59 VPN services, but its published shortlist was based on a Linksys WRT3200ACM running DD-WRT and OpenWrt and was updated August 12, 2026. That is useful evidence that several services document router use; it is not a controlled comparison of eero meshes, upstream router models, wireless backhaul, firmware combinations or household traffic loads.
A meaningful eero ranking would need the same eero model, the same upstream router, identical firmware, the same VPN protocol and repeatable tests across providers. Without those controls, ranking “best” by speed or value would overstate what is known. Use the four documented names as a starting shortlist, then select the service whose current instructions match your hardware.

Eero has Internet, but the VPN is not active
Check the upstream router’s VPN-client status, not only the eero app. Confirm that the VPN process is running and that the router’s WAN connection is the one carrying eero traffic.
The router will not import the configuration
Verify the firmware, hardware revision and protocol. A configuration generated for OpenVPN cannot be assumed to work in a WireGuard-only client, and a file for one firmware family may not match another.

Some devices connect and others do not
Test the physical path and IP assignment from the VPN router to eero. Then test a device that can run a VPN app separately; if that device works only with its app, the upstream router configuration is not yet providing the intended network-wide path.
Performance is much lower than expected
Compare the connection with the VPN client disabled, then check the router’s processor load, selected protocol and server location. Do not treat results from the Linksys-based industry comparison as a prediction for your eero installation.

Can I install a VPN directly in the eero app?
No. The eero app manages the mesh, but eero’s documented VPN capability is passthrough rather than a built-in outbound VPN client. A separate upstream client router or device apps are required for active VPN tunneling.
Will a VPN router protect devices that join a satellite eero node?
If the satellite is part of the same eero mesh behind the upstream VPN router, its clients use the network path supplied by the gateway. Confirm the tunnel with a test device on that node because the VPN state is controlled upstream, not by the satellite.
Do I need to replace my eero mesh to use a VPN?
Usually not. The documented workaround keeps eero as the mesh system and adds a compatible VPN-client router before it. Replacement is only a consideration if your existing hardware cannot provide the required upstream topology or protocol.
Are router VPN and VPN-app features identical?
