The best VPN alternative depends on what you need to protect. Tor is the strongest fit when your priority is separating your identity from destinations and resisting censorship, but it is not a dependable streaming-unblocking tool. Firefox’s built-in VPN feature is a narrower, browser-only proxy. A carefully assessed paid VPN remains the practical choice when you need one connection for multiple apps and want to investigate streaming access. None of these options guarantees anonymity, and current access to a particular streaming service depends on its country, device, plan and detection rules.
What is a VPN alternative, and when is one better than a VPN?
A conventional VPN normally routes traffic from many applications through servers operated by one provider. A VPN alternative changes either the routing path, the coverage, or the trust model. That difference matters more than the marketing label: Tor uses a multi-relay anonymity network, a browser proxy protects only one browser, and a privacy-focused VPN still relies on a provider but can cover an entire device.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose by threat model rather than by a universal ranking. Ask which party you want to stop seeing your traffic, whether every application must be covered, and whether streaming is a requirement or merely a bonus.
- Local network or ISP visibility: A proxy or VPN can hide the destination servers your browser or device connects to, while Tor adds several relays between you and the destination.
- Destination-site tracking: Tor is designed to make it harder for one point to associate your origin with your destination. A VPN generally replaces your IP address with the provider’s address, but the provider remains a central point of trust.
- Application coverage: Tor Browser covers its own browsing session; Firefox’s proxy covers Firefox traffic; a device-wide VPN can cover other applications when configured to do so.
- Streaming: You must check the exact service, country, device or app and subscription plan. The available evidence does not establish current compatibility for named services.
Which alternatives are available, and what do they actually cover?
| Option | Traffic scope | Privacy model | Streaming outlook | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tor Browser | The Tor Browser session | Traffic passes through three random relays, making it difficult for one relay to see both origin and destination | Not established for any particular service or country | Websites may detect Tor; saved downloads, bookmarks and some local settings remain on the device |
| Tor VPN (beta) | Intended to route other applications through Tor | Tor-style relay routing outside the browser | Not established | The Tor Project says it is beta software, may leak information and should not be relied on for sensitive use |
| Firefox VPN feature | Firefox network traffic only | A proxy hides your IP address from sites and prevents the network provider from seeing which servers Firefox connects to | Must be tested for the specific service and region | Other applications bypass it; Mozilla says it does not by itself make browsing fully anonymous |
| Paid, device-wide VPN | Potentially all supported applications on the device | One provider becomes the central operator; confidence depends on ownership, jurisdiction, transparency and audits | Most plausible option when broad coverage and location selection are required, but availability is service-specific | A “no-logs” label is a claim whose scope and audit date must be examined |
How does Tor protect privacy, and what are its practical limits?
According to the Tor Project, Tor sends traffic through three randomly selected relays. The design makes it difficult for any single relay to observe both where traffic entered the network and where it ultimately went. That is a different privacy model from sending all traffic through one VPN provider, and it is useful for anonymity and censorship-resistance discussions.

What Tor is good at
- Separating knowledge of your originating connection from knowledge of the destination.
- Reducing the value of a single relay or local observer that sees only part of the path.
- Providing a browser configuration built around privacy protections rather than convenience features.
Why Tor is a poor default for streaming
Streaming platforms can identify and restrict Tor exit addresses, and the sources available here do not verify access for any particular service, country, device or plan. Do not select Tor expecting a reliable catalog change. If a service is essential, test that service directly under the exact account and playback conditions you will use.
Does Tor store anything locally?
The Tor Project’s privacy policy says Tor Browser does not collect or transmit persistent personal data. It also explains that bookmarks and downloads are saved locally and are not automatically deleted, and that local settings and browser data can persist depending on the platform and configuration. “Tor stores nothing” is therefore too broad: network-identity protections do not erase files or every local trace.

Not for sensitive work based on the current official guidance. The Tor Project describes Tor VPN as beta software and warns: “Tor VPN is beta software. Do not rely on it for anything other than testing. It may leak information and should not be relied on for anything sensitive.” Treat it as an experiment, not as a mature replacement for a system-wide VPN.
What does Firefox’s browser-scoped VPN protect?
Mozilla describes the Firefox VPN feature as a proxy. It hides your IP address from websites and prevents your network provider from seeing which servers Firefox connects to, but it does not proxy traffic from other applications. It also does not, by itself, make web browsing fully anonymous.

When a browser proxy is a sensible choice
- You want a simple change limited to ordinary Firefox browsing.
- You do not want game clients, mail applications, media players or other programs routed through the same service.
- You understand that the browser’s connection path and your other applications’ paths will be different.
What it cannot do
A browser proxy cannot protect a streaming app on a television, phone or desktop unless that app is actually Firefox-based traffic. It also does not remove account identifiers, cookies, browser fingerprints or other ways a site can recognize a session. Mozilla states that limited technical and interaction data are processed to provide, maintain and improve the feature, so read the current privacy notice rather than treating “proxy” as “no data.”
When is a paid VPN still the better alternative?
A paid VPN remains the more relevant option when you need coverage across applications, want a single control for a whole device, or must investigate whether a particular service works from a particular country. It is not automatically more private than Tor: you are concentrating trust in the VPN operator, so the operator’s ownership, jurisdiction, transparency and technical evidence matter.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHow should you interpret a no-logs audit?
An audit is evidence about a defined claim, systems and time period—not a guarantee of perfect anonymity. For example, DuckDuckGo reports that Securitum performed a technical inspection, proprietary-component source-code review and live-system analysis between October 2025 and January 2026. DuckDuckGo says the work validated its VPN no-logs policy, including no user-activity logging on egress servers, no user-attributable DNS connection metadata and no monitoring of websites or services visited.
Those findings should be attributed to that report summary and period. They do not establish that every part of the service was audited, that future operation will be identical, or that users are anonymous in every circumstance.

What does an infrastructure audit add?
Different audits answer different questions. A no-logs review may examine whether records associated with user activity exist; an application audit may inspect client code or behavior; an infrastructure audit may examine deployment and server controls. A vendor statement that its infrastructure underwent an independent audit in 2025 is useful context, but without the report’s scope and findings it should not be presented as independently confirmed evidence.
Which provider questions should you ask?
Privacy Guides’ VPN criteria (page updated May 19, 2026) look for public-facing leadership or ownership, a jurisdiction where a provider cannot be forced into secret logging, frequent transparency reports and responsible marketing. These are evaluation criteria, not a universal legal test, but they make a practical checklist:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Who owns and operates the service, and can you identify responsible leadership?
- Where is the provider incorporated, and what legal process could compel records?
- Is there a dated, independent report? Who performed it, and were the apps, infrastructure, logs or only one component in scope?
- Does the provider publish transparency reports and explain incidents or policy changes?
- Are marketing statements carefully bounded, or do they promise anonymity that the technology cannot deliver?
How can you evaluate streaming compatibility without overpromising?
Streaming compatibility is a moving, service-specific property, not a permanent feature of a VPN alternative. A location that works today may be blocked after an address range is classified, and an app, browser and smart-TV device can receive different treatment.
- Name the exact service and plan. Record the country in which the account is registered, the catalog you need and whether playback occurs in a browser or a native app.
- Identify the playback device. Test the same operating system, television platform, phone or computer you intend to use; results from a browser do not establish results in a native app.
- Check the provider’s current policy and server locations. Do not infer that a listed country guarantees access to that country’s catalog.
- Run a controlled test. Sign in normally, select the intended endpoint or proxy setting, and check both playback and catalog availability. Record the date because the result can change.
- Test failure recovery. If playback fails, disconnect the proxy or VPN, clear only the site data that is necessary, try a different endpoint offered by the same service, and confirm that the account itself is not restricted. Avoid claiming success from a single title or a single day.
The evidence available for this guide does not verify current access for any named streaming service, region, device or plan. Treat independently verified, dated tests as necessary before paying for a service solely to reach a catalog.

Which option fits your privacy and streaming priorities?
Choose Tor Browser when anonymity and censorship resistance come first
Tor Browser is the most distinct alternative if your concern is reducing the ability of one network point to connect your origin and destination. Accept that websites may challenge or block Tor, that performance and convenience can differ from ordinary browsing, and that local downloads and bookmarks still need your own handling.
Choose Firefox’s proxy when you want browser-only separation
This is appropriate when only Firefox traffic needs an alternate path and you deliberately want other applications to keep using the normal connection. It is not a replacement for device-wide protection or a guarantee that a site cannot identify your account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose a paid VPN after checking evidence and required coverage
Select this route when several applications, devices or a streaming test need the same provider. Compare the operator’s accountability, jurisdiction, audit scope and date, then test the exact service and setup. A provider with an independently reviewed no-logs policy can offer stronger evidence than an unsupported slogan, but the audit still has boundaries.
Use combinations only when their boundaries are clear
You can use Tor Browser for high-sensitivity browsing while leaving ordinary applications on a separate connection, or use a browser proxy for Firefox while a device-wide VPN handles other programs. Layering tools does not automatically add anonymity: it can create different traffic paths, complicate troubleshooting and leave the least-protected application exposed.
Best Value
What are the most common mistakes, and how do you fix them?
- Assuming “VPN alternative” means the same coverage: Check whether the tool handles one browser, one app or the whole device before you rely on it.
- Treating a no-logs badge as proof: Find the report’s author, date, systems examined and exact claims. If those details are absent, call it an unverified policy statement.
- Expecting Tor to unblock a catalog: Tor’s privacy design does not establish streaming compatibility. Use a dated, service-specific test instead.
- Using the Tor VPN beta for sensitive traffic: Follow the Tor Project’s warning and restrict it to testing.
- Forgetting local data: Tor Browser’s downloads and bookmarks are saved locally, and settings can persist. Protect or remove local files according to your device’s normal security procedure.
- Calling any option anonymous: Account logins, cookies, fingerprints, local files and provider records can still identify activity. Describe the specific visibility reduction the tool provides.
- Relying on an old compatibility result: Record the date, country, device and plan whenever you test streaming, then recheck after major service or provider changes.
What should you verify before committing for the long term?
Long-term privacy is an ongoing governance question, not a one-time installation. Before subscribing or standardizing on an alternative, save the provider’s current privacy policy, audit summary and ownership information; note the publication dates; and set a calendar reminder to review them. Recheck whether the service still supports your devices and whether its transparency reporting has continued.
For streaming, keep a short record of the exact service, country, device, plan, endpoint and test date. That record prevents a temporary success from becoming an unsupported promise and makes it easier to decide whether a change is caused by your account, the provider or the streaming platform.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Tor Browser and a VPN be used at the same time?
They can be connected in a layered setup, but the result depends on which component is connected first and which traffic each one handles. Layering may change what the VPN operator can observe without making your account activity, browser data or local files anonymous; use it only when you can explain the resulting path.
Will a Firefox proxy protect a smart TV or streaming box?
No. Mozilla describes the feature as proxying Firefox network traffic, not traffic from other applications or devices. A television or streaming box therefore needs its own supported network configuration, and compatibility must be checked for that platform.
How often should I recheck a VPN provider’s audit?
Review the newest available report whenever you renew or make a major privacy decision, and compare its date and scope with the claims currently being advertised. An older no-logs assessment does not automatically describe later infrastructure, software or ownership changes.
What local privacy steps matter when using Tor Browser?
Treat downloaded files, bookmarks and persistent settings as ordinary local data: protect them with your device’s account security and remove them when they are no longer needed. Tor’s network routing does not automatically delete those items.
