The best VMware alternative depends on what you need to change: keep VMware but move its infrastructure, replace VMware with another VM platform, rehost VMs on cloud infrastructure, or modernize selected applications. If continuity is the priority, Amazon EVS or Azure VMware Solution can preserve the VMware environment; if you want to move to a different VM platform, Nutanix AHV and Nutanix Cloud Clusters are options to assess. Rehosting to Amazon EC2 can limit application changes, while containers and managed services require more redesign. There is no evidence-backed universal winner on cost or speed, so choose per workload after assessing dependencies, utilization, compatibility, and operating requirements.
What counts as a VMware alternative?
“VMware alternative” describes several different strategies, not just another hypervisor. The key distinction is whether you are changing where VMware runs, replacing the virtualization platform, moving VMs to cloud infrastructure, or changing the applications themselves.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Strategy | What changes | Examples in official product guidance | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep VMware, change the infrastructure | The VMware environment remains, but runs on another infrastructure. | Amazon EVS; Azure VMware Solution (AVS) | Supports continuity, but VMware and its licensing remain relevant. AVS license-included SKUs have specific retirement dates. |
| Replace VMware with another VM platform | The virtualization stack changes while the VM-centered operating model remains. | Nutanix AHV and Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) | Requires workload-fit, feature-mapping, sizing, licensing, support, and migration assessments. |
| Rehost VMs on cloud infrastructure | VMs move to cloud compute, with comparatively little application redesign. | Amazon EC2 | Infrastructure and operations change; dependencies, performance, networking, and consumption costs need review. |
| Modernize selected applications | Applications move toward managed services, containers, or serverless architectures. | AWS managed services, containers, serverless, or Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS (ROSA) | More application change and upfront work than a straightforward rehost. |
| Keep workloads on premises with cloud integration | Workloads that need to remain local are retained on site, with a hybrid infrastructure approach. | AWS Outposts and other hybrid infrastructure options | Local capacity, operating requirements, regional service support, and integration must be validated. |
These paths can coexist in one estate. A business application that depends on VMware-specific operations may warrant a continuity path, while another workload may be suitable for rehosting or modernization. Treat the workload, not the data center, as the unit of decision. A single estate can therefore have several destinations and still use one governance model for security, identity, backup, monitoring, and change control.
How should you choose the right VMware alternative?
Start with the outcome you need, then test each workload against it. The choice is usually clearest when you separate continuity, licensing, modernization, and deployment-location requirements.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Choose continuity on another infrastructure if VMware tooling and applications must remain intact or redesign risk and timing are unacceptable. This retains the VMware stack rather than replacing it.
- Assess a replacement VM platform if you want to leave VMware while keeping a VM-centered operating model, including for hybrid or cloud deployment. Validate feature fit and migration requirements rather than assuming a one-for-one match.
- Consider cloud rehosting if leaving VMware is important but application changes should be limited. This still requires a move to cloud operations and a review of performance, networking, and downstream costs.
- Modernize selectively when application modernization is a defined goal and the workload can be changed. Containers, managed services, or serverless architectures are not drop-in hypervisors.
- Retain workloads locally where necessary when compliance, latency, or data-residency needs make an on-site location important. Confirm the local capacity and service support required for the chosen design.
Ask four practical questions for every application: How much VMware dependency must disappear? How much application change is acceptable? Where must the workload run? And what operating model can the team support for the next several years? A team with deep vCenter skills but little container experience may sensibly take a VM-platform path first, while a product team already building APIs may gain more from managed databases or containers.
Do not force all workloads into one destination merely to simplify a migration plan. A workload that is near retirement or could be replaced by SaaS may not justify a costly move or redesign; include it only if there is a value case. Conversely, a low-change rehost can be a deliberate interim step when it creates time to modernize later.

Can you replace VMware with Nutanix AHV or NC2?
Nutanix is a VM-platform transition option for organizations that want to retain virtual machines while moving away from VMware. AWS’s 2026 Nutanix implementation guide describes Nutanix Move as a migration tool and maps VMware components to Nutanix counterparts, but those mappings are functional correspondences—not evidence that every feature behaves identically.
| VMware component | Nutanix component named in the AWS guide | What to validate |
|---|---|---|
| vSphere / ESXi | AHV | Guest OS and application support, operational practices, and required platform features. |
| vSAN | AOS Storage | Storage behavior, performance requirements, protection needs, and capacity sizing. |
| NSX | Flow Network Security and Flow Virtual Networking | Network segmentation, security policies, address design, and dependencies on existing network services. |
| vCenter | Prism Central | Management workflows, access requirements, monitoring, and administration responsibilities. |
AWS documents migration to NC2 on AWS using Nutanix Move. Microsoft also identifies Nutanix Cloud Clusters on Azure as a transition option. Those references establish that these are options to evaluate; they do not establish that every organization, region, workload, or VMware configuration is supported. Confirm product availability, support terms, and licensing for the intended destination before making a design commitment.
How to assess Nutanix fit
- Map the VMware features and integrations each workload actually uses, rather than relying only on product-name correspondences.
- Identify guest operating-system, application, third-party, and support requirements that could constrain a move.
- Measure actual CPU, memory, storage, and network utilization. The AWS guide describes Nutanix Collector and Sizer as planning inputs; size from workload evidence rather than the existing cluster’s nominal capacity.
- Check backup, disaster-recovery, replication, snapshot, automation, and monitoring workflows. Re-create the operational outcome on AHV rather than assuming scripts written for vCenter will work unchanged.
- Confirm the migration approach, target capacity, licensing, support arrangements, and operational changes with the relevant vendors and your own infrastructure team.
NC2 can be considered where the organization wants a Nutanix operating model in AWS or Azure while retaining a familiar VM pattern. The target still has cloud networking, identity, availability-zone, and consumption considerations. A successful proof of concept should include representative production guests, not only an idle test VM, and should measure backup recovery, network latency, patching, and administrator workflows.
When is keeping VMware on another infrastructure the better choice?
Keeping VMware can be the more suitable path when preserving the existing environment matters more than removing VMware dependency. Amazon EVS and Azure VMware Solution both retain VMware; neither is a VMware-free hypervisor replacement.

Amazon EVS
AWS describes Amazon EVS as running VMware Cloud Foundation in an Amazon VPC. It retains VMware tools such as vCenter, vSAN, and NSX. Evaluate it as VMware continuity on AWS, not as a migration to a different virtualization stack. This can reduce application and administrator change when existing tooling, runbooks, and integrations are valuable. It does not eliminate VMware licensing, VMware-specific skills, or the need to validate network connectivity, identity, backup, and disaster-recovery designs in the VPC.
Azure VMware Solution
AVS is a managed VMware service. Microsoft says AVS itself is not ending; the change concerns particular license-included SKUs. Customers evaluating AVS should verify host, licensing, and reservation requirements, and distinguish those from the broader availability of the service. A portable VCF license may preserve a VMware-centered design, but the customer must verify that the license, host configuration, region, and commercial terms are valid for the planned deployment.
What do the Azure VMware Solution license changes mean?
Microsoft Learn’s AVS license-included retirement guidance, last updated 9 October 2026, sets different dates for PayGo and Reserved Instance (RI) license-included SKUs. As of 25 October 2026, the PayGo retirement date is six days away. These dates apply to the specified license-included SKUs, not to AVS as a whole.
| AVS license-included SKU type | Date stated by Microsoft | What customers should do |
|---|---|---|
| PayGo | Retires 31 October 2026 | Confirm the affected workloads, contract, and available continuation route with Microsoft before the retirement date. |
| Reserved Instance | License-included services end 30 August 2027 | Microsoft says affected RI customers should transition to an AVS VCF BYOL SKU before 30 August 2027 to avoid service disruption on 31 August 2027. |
Microsoft identifies portable VCF licenses purchased from Broadcom as the least disruptive continuation route for affected customers. It also names Nutanix Cloud Clusters and Azure-native services as alternatives to consider. These options differ in how much of the VMware environment they preserve, so they should not be treated as interchangeable SKU substitutions. Recheck Microsoft’s current guidance and the customer’s contract immediately before procurement because dates, SKU availability, and terms can change.
For a PayGo customer, the near-term task is to identify every affected cluster, confirm whether a replacement SKU is available in the required region, and set a cutover or licensing plan before 31 October 2026. For an RI customer, allow time to procure portable VCF licenses, validate host and reservation requirements, and test the operational path before 30 August 2027. Keep a contingency option—such as a replacement VM platform, cloud rehost, or Azure-native redesign—if licensing or workload constraints make a continuation route unsuitable.
When should you rehost VMs or modernize applications?
Rehosting and modernization solve different problems. Rehosting aims to move a VM with comparatively little application change; modernization changes the application’s architecture or the services it uses.

Rehost when the application should change as little as possible
A move to Amazon EC2 is a cloud-infrastructure option for organizations seeking to exit VMware without undertaking a broad application redesign. “Less application change” does not mean “no migration work”: dependencies, performance, network behavior, sizing, and the move to cloud operations still need assessment. Compare actual infrastructure, storage, network, support, and cloud-consumption costs rather than assuming the move will lower costs.
Rehosting is often most defensible for stable applications with supported guest operating systems, clear dependency maps, and a finite remaining life. It can also be a sequencing tactic: move a tier with minimal change, stabilize it in cloud operations, then decide whether a later release should adopt managed storage, a managed database, or containers. Test licensing, backup agents, monitoring, DNS, firewall rules, and identity integration because these frequently change even when application binaries do not.
Modernize when application change is an explicit goal
Moving toward managed services, containers, or serverless can align with a modernization program, but generally calls for more upfront change than rehosting. AWS includes ROSA among options for teams modernizing VMware workloads to containers. Treat ROSA as a focused container modernization route, not as a general-purpose hypervisor replacement. Assess application tiers individually: some may be suitable for managed data services or containers, while others may be better left as VMs or retired.
Modernization requires an explicit value case: faster release cycles, improved resilience, reduced undifferentiated operations, or a requirement to use cloud-native capabilities. Define the target architecture, data migration method, observability, security controls, and rollback path before decomposing a VM. A stateful database, tightly coupled middleware tier, and stateless web tier may need different treatments rather than one “containerize everything” project.
Keep a workload local when its constraints require it
Compliance, latency, or data-residency requirements may favor retaining a workload on premises, potentially with cloud integration such as AWS Outposts. Validate local capacity, operating needs, regional service support, and integration before choosing a hybrid design. A cloud connection does not by itself establish that a workload meets a particular compliance or residency requirement. Document which data, control-plane services, logs, and backups cross the boundary and who operates each component.
How do you plan a VMware migration?
Build the plan from measured workload behavior and dependencies, not just a list of VM names. Microsoft’s Azure migration guidance describes Azure Migrate as providing inventory and sizing or wave-planning evidence for AVS; it does not perform the move into AVS.

- Inventory the estate. Record VMs and actual CPU, memory, storage, and network use. Identify application and infrastructure dependencies, then group machines that need to move together. Capture owners, business criticality, maintenance windows, operating-system versions, and licensing constraints.
- Assess each workload’s suitability. Check guest-operating-system and third-party support, performance and latency needs, network segments, and IP, DNS, and firewall dependencies. Confirm which application tiers belong on the proposed target and whether the target supports required backup, security, and recovery tools.
- Choose a treatment per workload. Decide whether it should remain on premises, be rehosted, move to a replacement VM platform, use a managed data service, be modernized, or be retired. Avoid carrying forward a VM simply because it exists.
- Size the target from measured use. For an NC2 assessment, the AWS guide identifies Nutanix Collector and Sizer as planning inputs. Validate the resulting capacity against workload needs, failure-domain requirements, growth, maintenance headroom, and expected operating conditions.
- Design network and identity integration. Plan routable paths, address ranges, DNS, firewall policy, directory reachability, load balancers, monitoring, and administrative access. A VM that boots successfully can still fail production validation if dependent services cannot resolve or reach it.
- Sequence migration waves. Group work according to dependencies, compatibility, and cutover needs. Start with a representative, recoverable wave, then use its timing and defect data to refine later waves. Use inventory and sizing evidence to make waves practical rather than assuming that a data-center-wide move can happen as one event.
- Set validation and rollback criteria before cutover. Microsoft’s guidance calls out replication health, network routability, host health, identity reachability, backups, monitoring, DNS, and load balancers. Define how each will be checked, who signs off, how long heightened monitoring lasts, and what conditions trigger rollback.
- Decommission deliberately. After a stable period, remove obsolete replication, licenses, firewall rules, monitoring objects, and capacity only after retention, audit, and recovery requirements are met. Keep an accurate record of the final location and owner of every workload.
How should you compare cost and operational impact?
The available vendor guidance does not establish an independent apples-to-apples cost or performance winner. A lower infrastructure line item alone is not a total-cost comparison, and no general claim that one path is cheapest or fastest is supported.
Build the comparison using the same workload scope and time horizon for each candidate. Include platform licenses, infrastructure, storage, networking, support, migration effort, and cloud consumption. Capture the operational work of running the target as well: preserving VMware may reduce change to applications and tooling but retains VMware licensing relevance; replacing the platform changes virtualization operations; rehosting changes infrastructure and cloud operations; modernization adds application redesign and ongoing service choices.
Use actual utilization and required capacity rather than nominal VM allocations. Include network and dependency requirements, support obligations, availability needs, and the costs of running workloads during a transition. For cloud options, validate regional service availability and the workload’s consumption profile. For an AVS decision, account for the specific license-included SKU dates and the customer’s contract, rather than treating an older price or SKU assumption as current.
Model at least three periods: migration, steady state, and exit or retirement. Migration may include assessment tools, temporary replication capacity, parallel environments, testing, consulting, and staff overtime. Steady state includes licensing, reserved or on-demand consumption, storage growth, backup, egress, support, and platform administration. Exit costs include data transfer, contract commitments, and decommissioning. Present assumptions beside each estimate so a change in utilization, region, licensing status, or modernization scope can be recalculated.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat are the common migration pitfalls?
- Confusing continuity with replacement. EVS and AVS preserve VMware; they do not remove the VMware hypervisor or its operational dependencies.
- Assuming feature names prove parity. The Nutanix mappings document correspondences, not identical behavior. Test the features and integrations each workload actually uses.
- Sizing from allocated capacity. Oversized VM definitions can create unnecessary target cost, while averages can hide burst and failover requirements. Use measured peaks, growth, and recovery headroom.
- Ignoring non-VM dependencies. DNS, identity, firewalls, load balancers, backup, monitoring, and third-party agents can determine whether a cutover succeeds.
- Treating a tool as the migration. Azure Migrate supplies AVS inventory and planning evidence but does not move VMs into AVS. Nutanix Move is a migration tool, not proof that every workload is ready.
- Modernizing without a product case. A workload nearing retirement or SaaS replacement may not justify redesign. Conversely, a long-lived application may incur more cost if repeatedly rehosted without a modernization plan.
- Missing dated licensing obligations. AVS PayGo license-included SKUs retire on 31 October 2026, and affected RI license-included services end 30 August 2027. Confirm the customer’s exact SKU and contract.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are VMware alternatives?
They include keeping VMware on another infrastructure such as Amazon EVS or Azure VMware Solution, replacing VMware with a VM platform such as Nutanix AHV or NC2, rehosting VMs on Amazon EC2, modernizing applications with managed services or containers such as ROSA, and retaining constrained workloads on premises with hybrid infrastructure.
What is the best VMware alternative?
There is no universal best choice. Continuity favors EVS or AVS; leaving VMware while retaining a VM model favors an evaluated AHV or NC2 design; limited application change favors EC2 rehosting; and an explicit modernization goal may favor managed services, containers, or serverless. Decide per workload.
Best Value
Can Azure Migrate move VMware VMs directly into Azure VMware Solution?
No. Microsoft describes Azure Migrate as a source of inventory, sizing, and wave-planning evidence for AVS; it does not perform the move into AVS. Treat migration planning and the actual transfer as separate parts of the project.
Do all workloads in a VMware estate have to use the same destination?
No. A workload can be retained, rehosted, moved to a different VM platform, modernized, or retired according to its dependencies and value case. Separate destinations can be sensible when application requirements or location constraints differ.
Is Amazon EVS a VMware replacement?
No. AWS describes EVS as running VMware Cloud Foundation in an Amazon VPC with tools such as vCenter, vSAN, and NSX. It is a VMware continuity option on AWS, not a VMware-free hypervisor replacement.
Are Azure VMware Solution license-included SKUs ending?
Microsoft says AVS itself is not ending, but license-included PayGo SKUs retire on 31 October 2026 and license-included services for affected Reserved Instances end on 30 August 2027. Affected RI customers should transition to an AVS VCF BYOL SKU before that date to avoid disruption on 31 August 2027.
Should I migrate a VMware workload that is about to be retired?
Not automatically. Compare the value of moving it with its remaining life and the possibility of replacing it with SaaS; include it only when there is a clear value case.
How do I migrate my VMware workloads?
Inventory actual CPU, memory, storage, and network use; map dependencies; assess guest and application compatibility; choose a treatment; size the target; design network and identity integration; sequence waves; and define validation and rollback criteria. Check replication, routability, host health, backups, monitoring, DNS, load balancers, and identity reachability before cutover.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can ROSA replace my VMware hypervisor?
No. Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS is a focused container modernization route. It may suit an application that can be redesigned for containers, but it is not a drop-in VM platform for an unchanged VMware estate.
The Bottom Line
Choose the strategy that matches each workload’s required continuity, licensing outcome, modernization horizon, and location. Use EVS or AVS when preserving VMware is the priority; evaluate AHV or NC2 when you want a different VM platform; use EC2 for a comparatively low-change cloud rehost; and reserve managed services, containers, or serverless for workloads with a clear modernization case. Inventory dependencies and measured utilization first, validate network and operational requirements, model migration and steady-state costs, and confirm current AVS SKU terms before committing.
