For ordinary ZIP files, you do not need another Mac app: Finder’s built-in Archive Utility expands ZIP files and creates them with the Compress command. If you regularly receive RAR, RAR5, 7-Zip, or older archive formats, The Unarchiver is the best free extraction-focused choice. If you also need to create archives, encrypt them, split large files into volumes, or manage many formats from one interface, Keka is the strongest all-purpose pick. Paid tools such as BetterZip and WinZip make more sense for archive browsing, cloud workflows, or sharing features.
This guide compares those options by formats, creation tools, encryption, Finder integration, macOS requirements, and price information available through 2026. App versions and store prices change, so check the developer’s current listing before installing.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo you need an unzip app on a Mac?
Not for a normal ZIP archive. macOS includes Archive Utility, surfaced through Finder, and Apple’s support instructions cover both common operations: double-click a ZIP to expand it, or Control-click a file or folder and choose Compress to create a ZIP. Apple notes that compressed files use less disk space, which is useful for backups and sending information over the internet.
Finder is the simplest and safest choice when all you need is a standard .zip file. It does not provide the broad format coverage, archive browsing, split-volume controls, or specialist encryption workflow offered by dedicated utilities.

Expand a ZIP with Finder
- Open Finder and locate the
.zipfile, usually in Downloads. - Double-click the archive. macOS extracts its contents into a folder beside the original file.
- Open the new folder and check that the expected files are present before deleting the ZIP.
Create a ZIP with Finder
- Select one file, several files, or a folder in Finder.
- Control-click the selection.
- Choose Compress. Finder creates a ZIP in the same location.
- Rename the resulting archive if necessary, then attach or upload it as you would any other file.
Choose a dedicated utility when Finder reports an unsupported format, when you need to inspect an archive before extracting it, or when you must create encrypted or multi-volume archives.
What is the best unzip app for Mac?
The right answer depends on whether you only extract files or also build and manage archives.

Why choose The Unarchiver for free RAR and legacy extraction?
The Unarchiver is the best free recommendation when your main job is opening files rather than creating new archives. Its Mac App Store description lists ZIP, RAR (including RAR5), 7-Zip, TAR, Gzip, Bzip2, StuffIt, DiskDoubler, LZH, ARJ, ARC, ISO, BIN, and some EXE installers. That breadth makes it useful when a sender gives you an archive that Finder cannot identify.
It also attempts to preserve filename encodings for archives created in different regions. That matters when names contain accented characters or non-Latin scripts: extraction may retain the original names instead of replacing them with garbled text. The official site lists version 4.3.9, dated 18 March 2025, for macOS 10.13 and later, and describes the app as free with no in-app purchases.
What The Unarchiver does well
- Opens RAR and RAR5 without a subscription.
- Handles a long list of legacy formats as well as current ZIP and 7-Zip files.
- Works as an extraction utility rather than adding a complex archive-management interface.
- Documents ZIP AES encryption and Zip64 support.
Where it is limited
The Unarchiver is extraction-first. If you need to package folders for other people, choose compression levels, encrypt new archives, or split a large archive into numbered volumes, Keka is a better single-app solution. You can still keep Finder for ordinary ZIP creation, but that creates a two-tool workflow.
Install and use it
- Install The Unarchiver from the Mac App Store or its official distribution.
- Open the app’s preferences if you want to select which archive extensions it should handle by default.
- Double-click a supported archive in Finder, or Control-click it and choose the extraction command associated with The Unarchiver.
- For a password-protected archive, enter the password supplied by the sender when prompted. A correct password cannot compensate for a damaged or incomplete download.
Is Keka better than The Unarchiver?
Keka is better when your workflow includes both extraction and archive creation. The Unarchiver is simpler for opening difficult formats at no cost; Keka adds controls for writing archives, encryption, split volumes, pausing and resuming jobs, and Finder integration.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces
- Complete a wide range of applications with a high-performance motor that delivers up to 300 UWO, and an impact driver delivering up to 1,400 in-lbs of torque
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
Keka’s App Store listing documents creation in 7Z, ZIP, TAR, ZSTD, GZIP, BZIP2, and AppleArchive. For extraction it lists 7Z, ZIP, RAR, TAR, GZIP, BZIP2, AAR, XZ, ZSTD, ISO, LZMA, EXE, CAB, MSI, PAX, JAR, APK, APPX, XPI, IPA, CPGZ, CPIO, XIP, and CPT. That is a substantially broader two-way workflow than an extraction-only utility.
Keka’s useful controls
- Encryption: protect an archive when its contents should not be readable by anyone who obtains the file.
- Split volumes: divide a large archive into smaller pieces for a size-limited upload or removable media.
- Pause and resume: stop a long compression or extraction job without discarding the work already completed.
- Finder-related improvements: start common archive actions from the location where your files already live.
Keka’s official site lists version 1.6.8 and support for Mac OS X 10.10 or newer. It says the App Store edition is the same application distributed through Apple’s store and that buying there supports development. A 2026 MacPacker price snapshot listed the App Store edition at $6.49; treat that as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent price.
Create an encrypted archive in Keka
- Open Keka and choose the output format, such as 7Z or ZIP, from its format controls.
- Set a password before adding files. Use a long, unique passphrase and share it through a different channel from the archive.
- Drag the files or folder onto Keka, or use its Finder action.
- Wait for the completion message, then open the archive once to confirm that it extracts and requests the password.
Use 7Z when the recipients can use a compatible extractor and you want Keka’s full feature set. Use ZIP when the archive must open on a wide range of computers with minimal extra software.
When are BetterZip and WinZip worth paying for?
Paid tools trade the free simplicity of Finder or The Unarchiver for management and workflow features. BetterZip is aimed at users who want to browse and manipulate archive contents before extraction; WinZip is more attractive when cloud services and direct sharing are central to the job.

Current comparisons describe BetterZip as a paid archive manager and highlight password-management capabilities. A 2026 MacPacker comparison listed a $35 one-time price. Because licenses, upgrade policies, and macOS support can change, confirm the current offer before buying.
Choose BetterZip when you routinely inspect archives, remove or add individual files without unpacking everything, or maintain a library of password-protected archives. For occasional RAR opening, its management features are unnecessary.

WinZip
WinZip’s Mac offering is positioned around paid archive work with cloud-service unzipping and direct email sharing highlighted in comparisons. That can reduce steps for a business workflow that moves files between cloud storage and recipients. Verify the current subscription or license terms and supported macOS release before committing.
Should you consider Bandizip on Mac?
Bandizip is a broad-format alternative for readers who want explicit security and integrity features. Its official Mac page lists RAR and RAR5, ISO, CAB, WIM, ZIP, ZIPX, ZST, and many other formats, along with AES-256 encryption, multi-volume compression, integrity testing, codepage detection, and Finder integration.
Recommended Free Tools
Bandizip lists version 7.37 in 2026. The documented integrity test is useful when you need to check whether an archive is damaged before attempting a lengthy extraction, while codepage detection addresses filename compatibility across systems. It is a sensible alternative to Keka when those checks are more important than Keka’s pause/resume workflow.
What is the difference between extracting and creating an archive?
Extracting means reading a compressed package and restoring its files to a folder. Creating means selecting files, choosing a format and compression settings, and writing a new package for storage or transfer.
| Your task | Best starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Open a ZIP downloaded from a trusted source | Finder | No installation or account is needed. |
| Open RAR, RAR5, 7-Zip, or an old archive | The Unarchiver | Free, extraction-focused, and format-rich. |
| Create encrypted or split archives | Keka | Provides creation controls alongside extraction. |
| Browse and edit archive contents repeatedly | BetterZip | Designed as a paid archive manager. |
| Move archives through cloud services or email | WinZip | Its documented differentiators are cloud unzipping and direct sharing. |
| Test archive integrity and use AES-256 | Bandizip | Those controls are explicitly documented for its Mac edition. |
How do you open a RAR file on a Mac?
Finder does not cover RAR as part of its ordinary ZIP workflow, so install an extractor such as The Unarchiver or Keka.
- Download the installer from the developer or the Mac App Store and confirm that your macOS version meets its requirement.
- Locate the
.rarfile in Finder. For a multi-part archive, keep every numbered part in the same folder. - Open the first part, normally the file ending in
.part1.raror the unnumbered.rarfile. - Choose an extraction destination and wait for the utility to process all parts.
- Enter the sender’s password if prompted, then inspect the extracted folder for missing or corrupt files.
If extraction stops immediately, confirm that all parts finished downloading and that their filenames were not changed. If a password is rejected, ask the sender to confirm capitalization and whether the archive was created with a modern encryption method supported by your chosen utility.

How do you split and reassemble a large archive?
Use Keka or Bandizip to create numbered volumes when a service imposes a file-size limit. Set the volume size below the service’s limit, create the archive, and upload every generated part.
The recipient must download all parts into one folder and open the first part with a compatible extractor. Missing, renamed, or partially uploaded volumes prevent complete extraction even when the first part opens normally. Keep the original unsplit files until the recipient confirms success.
What should you do when an archive will not open?
- Check the extension: a file ending in
.rar,.7z,.tar.gz, or.zipxmay require a dedicated utility rather than Finder. - Finish the download: compare the downloaded file size with the sender’s value when available. A partial archive often produces an integrity or unexpected-end error.
- Try the correct first volume: multi-part sets must be opened from the first part with every other part present.
- Confirm the password: passwords are case-sensitive, and encrypted archives cannot be recovered by renaming the file.
- Use a current extractor: format support and encryption compatibility vary by version. Check the developer’s current release notes if an archive uses a newer method.
- Protect the extracted files: do not open executables or installers from an untrusted archive simply because extraction succeeded.
Which app should you install?
Use this decision path:
- Only standard ZIP files: stay with Finder.
- Mostly RAR, RAR5, 7-Zip, or legacy files: install The Unarchiver for a free extraction workflow.
- Extraction plus creation, encryption, or split volumes: choose Keka.
- Archive browsing and password management: evaluate BetterZip and confirm its current license.
- Cloud and email sharing: evaluate WinZip and its current plan terms.
- Integrity testing and AES-256 controls: consider Bandizip.
For most Mac readers, the practical setup is either Finder alone or Finder plus one dedicated extractor. Keka is the most capable single paid-or-supported choice for mixed workflows, while The Unarchiver remains the clearest free answer when opening archives is the only requirement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Finder create a password-protected ZIP?
Finder’s Compress command is designed for straightforward ZIP creation and does not expose the password field found in dedicated archive utilities. Use Keka or another tool with encryption controls when the archive itself must require a password.
Do all files in a split archive need to be downloaded before extraction?
Yes. The extractor may open the first volume, but complete output generally requires every numbered part, unchanged and stored together. Ask the sender to resend any missing or damaged volume rather than renaming files to fill the gap.
Why does an archive open on one Mac but not another?
The two Macs may be running different extractor versions, macOS releases, or have different support for the archive’s encryption and compression method. Updating the utility or opening the archive with a format-rich tool usually identifies whether compatibility is the cause.
Is it safe to open an archive from an unknown sender?
Treat the archive like any other untrusted download: scan it with your security software, inspect its contents, and avoid launching installers or executable files unless you can verify the source. Successful decompression only proves that the container can be read; it does not prove that every enclosed file is safe.
