The most reliable evaluation stack combines a broad benchmark with a focused diagnostic. Start with PhyWorldBench or Physics-IQ Verified for coverage, then add PDI-Bench or PhyProbe to investigate geometry or clip-level violations. Use GAUGE when you can compare generated motion with measured real-world experiments. No single score is a universal realism grade: a polished clip may still break gravity, collisions, object permanence, perspective, or cause-and-effect. Report the benchmark, version, prompts, evaluator and test protocol alongside every result.

What does “physical realism” mean in an AI-generated video?

Physical realism is whether events in a clip remain plausible under real-world mechanics, geometry and cause-and-effect—not merely whether frames look sharp or the prompt is followed. A video can depict the requested action and remain temporally coherent while mishandling a collision, changing an object’s shape, losing mass, reversing gravity, or producing impossible perspective.

Keep three dimensions separate in your report:

  • Visual quality: image detail, lighting, temporal smoothness and absence of obvious artifacts.
  • Semantic adherence: whether the requested people, objects and actions appear.
  • Physical correctness: whether motion, forces, geometry, interactions and consequences are plausible.

Physics-IQ states the distinction directly: “visual realism does not imply physical understanding.” PhyProbe makes the same practical point by describing clips that look polished and coherent while violating dynamics. A useful test therefore combines broad coverage with targeted checks instead of treating visual appeal as evidence of physics.

Which tools are best for testing physical realism?

Choose the tool according to the failure mode and the evidence you can collect. The table summarizes what each project actually measures and what it does not establish.

Tool Best use Input and scoring basis Important caveat
PhyWorldBench Broad, prompt-based comparison of text-to-video models Fundamental and composite physics, object motion, energy conservation, rigid-body interactions, human and animal motion, plus deliberately anti-physics prompts. Results can use human assessment or a zero-shot multimodal-language-model evaluator. Prompt design and evaluator choice affect results. State the route and prompt set you used.
Physics-IQ Verified Testing physical understanding across varied phenomena Five areas: solid mechanics, fluid dynamics, optics, thermodynamics and magnetism. The project recommends its Verified version. Do not tune prompts, perform best-of-N selection or otherwise optimize on test examples; the project warns that this leaks test data.
PhyProbe Diagnosing an individual generated clip Continuous physical-violation score from one video; no prompt or reference pair is required. Lower scores indicate greater consistency on its anchored scale. It is a learned evaluator. Check coverage and transfer before treating a score as general evidence.
PDI-Bench Geometry and perspective diagnostics Scale-depth alignment, 3D-motion consistency and 3D structural rigidity. Its project page states that lower PDI is better. It focuses on geometry, not every aspect of physical realism.
GAUGE Measurement-grounded physical-fidelity studies Generated or simulated dynamics are compared with controlled real-world experiments using measured trajectories, calibrated parameters, uncertainty estimates and task-specific observables. Use it only when measured behavior is available and the task protocol matches your application.
VideoPhy Physical commonsense and caption adherence Human judgments of generated clips against real-world activities and physical laws, plus an automatic evaluator introduced by its authors. Reported model rankings belong to that paper’s benchmark and generation setup, not to all models or future versions.

When should I use PhyWorldBench?

Use PhyWorldBench when you need a broad, repeatable test of text-to-video models. It covers both ordinary physical scenarios and deliberately anti-physics prompts, making it useful for detecting whether a model follows a prompt that asks for impossible behavior or incorrectly “corrects” it into something plausible.

What it covers

The benchmark reports fundamental and composite physics, including object motion, energy conservation, rigid-body interactions, and human or animal movement. Its 2026 description contains 1,050 curated prompts spanning those categories and anti-physics cases. The authors compared 10 text-to-video models—five open-source and five proprietary—in the benchmark’s reported study.

How it scores clips

You can use human assessment or the benchmark’s zero-shot multimodal-language-model evaluation approach. These are different measurement routes, so a result should identify which one produced the score. Keep the prompt list, generation settings and evaluator version fixed when comparing models.

What it cannot tell you alone

A broad prompt score is a model-level signal, not a proof that one particular clip is mechanically valid. Prompt wording, sampling settings and evaluator judgments can change the result. Pair PhyWorldBench with a geometry or clip-level diagnostic when a deployment decision depends on a specific failure mode.

What does Physics-IQ Verified test?

Physics-IQ Verified is designed to test physical understanding across five areas: solid mechanics, fluid dynamics, optics, thermodynamics and magnetism. It is a better fit than a narrow motion test when your application spans different kinds of phenomena, such as reflections, heat transfer, deformation and magnetic interactions.

Why use the Verified version?

The project repository recommends the Verified version. Follow that recommendation rather than mixing subsets without documenting the change; a custom subset can make results difficult to compare with published figures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I avoid test leakage?

Do not use test examples to rewrite prompts, choose the best of multiple generations, tune a model or otherwise improve the reported score. The project explicitly warns against best-of-N selection and related optimization on test material. Use a separate development split for prompt work, then run the held-out Verified test once the protocol is frozen.

When is PhyProbe the right diagnostic?

Choose PhyProbe when you need a score for one generated video and do not have the original prompt or a reference clip. Its project page says inference requires only a video and produces a continuous physical-violation score; lower values mean greater consistency on its anchored scale.

What makes a clip-level score useful?

It lets you triage failures after generation. For example, you can sort a batch by score, inspect the worst examples, and compare a model before and after a change without rebuilding a prompt suite. This is practical for quality-control pipelines where prompt metadata is incomplete.

How should I interpret its reported accuracy?

The PhyProbe project page, accessed in 2026, reports 82.4 weighted-average pairwise accuracy across four physical-consistency benchmarks. That figure describes the evaluator’s reported benchmark performance; it is not a guarantee that the score transfers to every genre, camera setup or generation model. Record the evaluator version and validate it on clips representative of your own use case.

What does PDI-Bench add that other tools miss?

PDI-Bench targets geometric and perspective consistency rather than broad physical commonsense. It examines scale-depth alignment, consistency of 3D motion and rigidity of 3D structure. Its project page states that lower PDI is better.

Use it when objects change size unexpectedly, surfaces bend without force, camera motion causes impossible depth shifts, or a supposedly rigid object deforms. A low PDI result does not establish that fluids, impacts, heat or forces are correct; combine it with a broader physics benchmark for those questions.

When is GAUGE worth the additional effort?

GAUGE is the strongest choice when you can define a real physical task and measure what happened. It compares generated or simulated dynamics with controlled real-world experiments using measured trajectories, calibrated parameters, uncertainty estimates and task-specific observables.

What resources does it provide?

The Shanghai AI Laboratory repository describes 22 task families and approximately 1,560 motion-capture trials. Those resources support evaluations based on observed trajectories rather than a purely learned impression of realism.

What must be in a GAUGE-style report?

  • The physical task and controlled experimental setup.
  • The measured variables, calibration procedure and units.
  • The generated or simulated trajectory being compared.
  • Uncertainty estimates and the task-specific observables used for scoring.
  • The benchmark and data version, along with any license or access restrictions.

GAUGE is not automatically better for every project. If your clip has no measurable counterpart, a controlled trajectory comparison may be impossible; use a prompt benchmark or diagnostic instead.

Where does VideoPhy fit?

VideoPhy evaluates physical commonsense together with caption adherence. Its authors use human evaluation of generated clips against real-world activities and physical laws and also introduce an automatic evaluator.

In the paper’s reported setup, CogVideoX-5B jointly followed captions and physical laws in 39.6% of instances under human evaluation. Keep the benchmark and generation context attached to that number: it is not a universal pass rate or a current leaderboard for every model.

VideoPhy is useful when you need to know whether a clip both depicts the requested activity and obeys ordinary physical expectations. If you only need geometric residuals or measured trajectories, PDI-Bench or GAUGE supplies a more targeted basis.

How do I choose a tool for a particular failure mode?

Start with the question you need to answer, then select the narrowest valid measurement and add coverage where necessary.

Question Primary choice Useful companion
Does the model handle many kinds of physical events? PhyWorldBench or Physics-IQ Verified PhyProbe for clip-level triage
Does a rigid object keep its shape and perspective? PDI-Bench PhyWorldBench rigid-body prompts
Is one clip physically consistent when its prompt is unavailable? PhyProbe Human review of the lowest-scoring and highest-scoring examples
Does generated motion match measured reality? GAUGE Uncertainty analysis and a broad prompt benchmark
Does the clip both follow the caption and make physical sense? VideoPhy Physics-IQ or PhyWorldBench for wider coverage
Does the model respond correctly to impossible requests? PhyWorldBench anti-physics prompts Human adjudication of whether the intended impossibility was preserved

How can I build a defensible evaluation workflow?

A useful workflow separates development from testing and reports multiple dimensions instead of collapsing everything into one number.

  1. Define the physical claims. List the phenomena that matter—such as gravity, collisions, fluids, reflections, rigid structure or human motion—and decide whether semantic adherence is a separate requirement.
  2. Freeze the protocol. Select the benchmark version, prompt set, generation settings, number of samples, evaluator and aggregation rule before running the held-out test.
  3. Use a broad suite for coverage. Run PhyWorldBench or Physics-IQ Verified when you need model-level comparisons across many phenomena. Keep anti-physics prompts in a separately labeled category.
  4. Add a targeted diagnostic. Apply PDI-Bench for geometric failures or PhyProbe when you need clip-only scoring without prompt or reference metadata.
  5. Use measured trials where possible. For a real physical task, use GAUGE-style comparisons with calibrated parameters, measured trajectories and uncertainty rather than relying solely on learned judgments.
  6. Audit examples, not just averages. Inspect representative successes, severe failures and borderline cases. Record what broke: force, timing, shape, depth, object identity or consequence.
  7. Report uncertainty and scope. Include sample counts, confidence intervals or annotator agreement when available, evaluator version, benchmark release, model generation settings and any exclusions.
  8. Keep test data held out. Prompt rewriting, best-of-N selection and model tuning must use development data, not Physics-IQ or another benchmark’s test examples.

How should I report scores without overstating realism?

Name the measurement basis in the result itself. “PhyProbe score” means something different from a human rating, a PDI geometric residual or a GAUGE trajectory error. A score should never appear without its direction—whether higher or lower is better—and its scale or aggregation rule.

Use separate columns for physical correctness, caption adherence and visual quality. A single composite can hide a model that follows captions well but violates mechanics, or one that looks attractive while losing object identity and depth.

What common mistakes make these evaluations unreliable?

Confusing polish with physics

High resolution, smooth motion and coherent editing can mask impossible acceleration, disappearing mass or incorrect contact forces. Require a physical test rather than inferring correctness from appearance.

Optimizing on the test set

Generating many candidates and selecting the best one with a known test prompt inflates the reported result. Keep prompt engineering and selection on a development split.

Mixing incompatible metrics

Do not average a learned violation score, a geometric residual and a human rating without a documented normalization and validation plan. Their scales and error patterns are different.

Generalizing beyond the benchmark

A score obtained on synthetic rigid-body scenes may not transfer to underwater footage, stylized animation, crowded human motion or unusual camera optics. Test representative clips before making a production claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving protocol details out

Model rankings can change with prompt wording, sampling, evaluator route and benchmark release. Report those details so another team can reproduce the comparison.

Are these tools ready for commercial evaluation?

They are research resources—datasets, papers, code and software evaluators—not a single standardized commercial product. The available project descriptions do not establish that every resource is equally maintained, freely usable or licensed for commercial deployment.

Before adoption, inspect the current license, dataset terms, redistribution rules, model-card restrictions and any requirement to download test data. Also verify whether the benchmark permits automated evaluation, internal model tuning and publication of clips. Compute requirements depend on the benchmark and local workflow; none of these projects makes a particular hardware purchase universally necessary.

What is the most practical evaluation stack?

For most teams, begin with PhyWorldBench or Physics-IQ Verified to measure coverage, then add PDI-Bench for geometry or PhyProbe for clip-level diagnosis. If your application has controlled, measurable physical behavior, make GAUGE the quantitative layer and retain a broad suite for failures outside the measured tasks. Use VideoPhy when caption adherence and physical commonsense must be judged together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Present the result as a profile—coverage, geometry, measured fidelity, semantic adherence and visual quality—not as one universal realism grade. This approach exposes the exact failure a model has and prevents a strong score in one dimension from concealing a serious physical error in another.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I test physical realism if I only have the rendered video?

Yes. PhyProbe is designed for inference from one video without a prompt or reference pair. You should still validate that its learned score transfers to your content and inspect examples rather than treating it as a complete physical audit.

Should I use human raters or an automatic evaluator?

Use human judgments when the task depends on nuanced cause-and-effect or unusual scenes, and use automatic metrics for repeatable large-scale screening. Running both on a calibration subset reveals where the automatic evaluator disagrees with expert judgment.

How many generated samples should I create per prompt?

The named benchmarks do not establish one universal sample count. Choose a fixed sampling policy in development, keep it unchanged for the held-out test, and disclose it because best-of-N selection can materially change apparent performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a physics benchmark evaluate stylized or animated videos?

Only if its assumptions and annotations match that visual domain. Validate on representative stylized clips first; perspective, deformation and intentional exaggeration can be interpreted differently from live-action physical errors.
