Tauon Music Box is the closest fit if you want a Linux desktop player that feels more visual and deliberate than Spotify’s desktop app. It turns a local collection into an album gallery, keeps playlists prominent, shows synchronized lyrics, supports lossless and gapless playback, and lets you rearrange its widgets. Tauon’s own privacy promise is unusually clear: “No ads. No tracking. No account.” Choose Strawberry instead if your priority is deep collection management, extensive metadata work, broad codec coverage, and bit-perfect Linux output. Both are local-library players, so neither is a drop-in replacement for Spotify’s licensed streaming catalog.

What makes Tauon feel better than Spotify’s Linux desktop app?

The difference is focus. Spotify’s desktop interface is built around an online service, recommendations, and an account. Tauon is built around the music files you already own. Open it and the main task is browsing albums, organizing playlists, and starting playback without a subscription workflow competing for attention.

Tauon’s album-gallery view makes cover art the primary navigation method. You can group music by folders, move through playlists, and choose which widgets appear in the layout. That combination is useful when you remember a record by its artwork or want a player that stays out of the way while you listen.

The project documents support for lossless formats, gapless playback, CUE sheets, tag editing, and synchronized lyrics. It also documents connections to Plex, Jellyfin, and Airsonic for readers whose library is partly stored on a home server. These are playback and organization tools, not a promise that every remote service or file type will behave identically on every Linux distribution.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Privacy is another practical distinction. Tauon’s official site states, “No ads. No tracking. No account.” You can therefore use it without creating an online identity or accepting an advertising layer. Your files, tags, playlists, and listening session remain centered on the desktop application.

Is Tauon or Strawberry better for a local FLAC library?

Tauon is better for visual browsing; Strawberry is better for collection administration and audiophile-oriented control. Both handle common and lossless formats, but they make different assumptions about how you manage music.

Current project information Distribution availability varies; the project documents Arch Linux, Flathub, and portable binaries. Official site lists version 1.2.31, released October 3, 2026; packages vary by distribution.

For a few hundred albums, the choice is mostly about how you like to browse. For a large, meticulously tagged FLAC archive, Strawberry’s metadata tools and collection model can save more time than Tauon’s visual polish. For a living-room PC or a laptop where you want to pick an album quickly, Tauon’s gallery is usually the more natural starting point.

How do I install Tauon or Strawberry on Linux?

Use the project’s official download page or your distribution’s trusted software source. Package names and supported versions change by distribution, so copying a command intended for another release can install an old build or miss required multimedia components.

  1. Identify your distribution and session type. Note the distribution release and whether you are using a standard desktop session, Wayland, or X11. This helps you choose a native package, Flatpak, or portable build that matches your system.
  2. Choose the project’s maintained channel. Tauon documents Arch Linux packages, a Flathub option, and portable binaries. Strawberry publishes official downloads and source links, while distribution repositories may lag behind its current release.
  3. Install through the normal system mechanism. For a repository package, use your distribution’s graphical software center or package manager. For Flathub, install and launch the Flatpak through your existing Flatpak workflow. For a portable binary, download the file from the project page, mark it executable using your file manager’s permissions dialog, and run it from a directory you control.
  4. Launch once before importing music. Let the player create its configuration directory, then check the audio device and output settings. This catches missing runtime dependencies before you spend time building a library index.
  5. Update deliberately. Keep the player on the same channel you selected. Mixing a distribution package with an unrelated portable build can produce two separate configurations and make playlists appear to vanish when you have simply opened the other installation.

There is no single installation command that is correct for every Linux distribution. The official pages are the right place to verify current package names, supported architectures, and release notes.

How do I add and organize a music folder in Tauon?

Tauon works best when your files have readable tags and a stable folder location. Start with one library root, verify that the player can read it, and only then add secondary disks or network-mounted folders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the library or music-folder settings. Add the top-level directory that contains your artists and albums rather than selecting every album separately.
  2. Allow the initial scan to finish. Album art, tags, and playlists may not appear until indexing completes. Keep the disk mounted during this first pass.
  3. Use the album gallery to check grouping. If one album appears as several tiles, inspect its album, album-artist, disc-number, and year tags. Inconsistent tags—not the player—are usually what split a multi-disc release.
  4. Create playlists for listening contexts. Tauon’s playlist-first design suits queues such as “work,” “test tracks,” or “Sunday records.” Keep permanent playlists separate from temporary playback queues so an accidental reorder does not destroy your long-term list.
  5. Edit tags only after making a backup. Tag changes are valuable for fixing artist names or disc order, but they alter the files’ metadata. Copy the folder or use your existing backup before applying large batches of edits.

Folder grouping is useful when your archive is already organized, while tags determine whether albums, artists, and discs appear consistently. A clean naming scheme helps both Tauon and Strawberry, so correcting the files once improves whichever player you choose later.

What does Strawberry add for serious collectors?

Strawberry describes itself as a “cross-platform music player and music collection organizer” aimed at “music collectors and audiophiles.” Its feature set reflects that audience: extensive codec support, metadata retrieval, playlists, lyrics, equalizer functions, and bit-perfect Linux output are all documented by the project.

Metadata and MusicBrainz workflows

If your library contains bootlegs, compilations, classical works, or multi-disc box sets, metadata tools matter as much as the playback screen. Strawberry’s retrieval and tagging workflows can help standardize artist, album-artist, release, disc, and track information. That reduces duplicate album entries and makes searches predictable.

Bit-perfect output

Bit-perfect output means the player attempts to send the decoded audio stream to the Linux audio device without changing its sample rate or applying software resampling. The result depends on your audio stack, device, mixer configuration, and the format being played; enabling a setting in the player alone cannot guarantee an untouched signal. Strawberry’s project documentation makes avoiding resampling a specific focus, which is why it appeals to audiophile users.

Collection tools over visual novelty

Strawberry can still show lyrics, artwork, and playlists, but its strength is control over a catalog rather than a gallery-first experience. Choose it when you routinely edit tags, retrieve metadata, manage a large number of releases, or need a playback path you can audit.

Does either player replace Spotify’s streaming service?

No. Tauon and Strawberry are primarily players for local files, with optional connections to selected servers or services. They do not provide Spotify’s licensed catalog, recommendation engine, subscription account, or synchronized cross-device service.

You can, however, use one alongside a streaming service. Keep owned FLAC, MP3, Ogg, or other supported files in Tauon or Strawberry, and use a browser or official streaming client when you need a catalog track. This split removes account prompts from your personal library without pretending a local player has the same rights or catalog as a streaming platform.

Which player handles very large libraries better?

There is no reliable universal winner from the available evidence. A rox project benchmark tested seven players with a 50,000-track library on an external SSD, recording startup, loading, memory, and idle-CPU measurements. That is useful context for scale, but it was a self-run test—not a controlled Tauon-versus-Strawberry-versus-Spotify usability study—and its results should not be generalized to every disk, desktop, or distribution.

For a library of that size, plan the storage and indexing workflow before judging the interface:

  • Keep the library on a fast, consistently mounted disk; the benchmark’s setup used an external SSD.
  • Separate music files from automatic backup copies so the player does not index duplicates.
  • Expect the first scan to take longer than subsequent launches.
  • Use consistent tags and album-art dimensions to reduce duplicate entries and repeated artwork processing.
  • Measure startup and memory on your own machine if those numbers affect your decision; the benchmark does not predict your hardware.

Strawberry’s collection-management orientation may be more comfortable once the catalog becomes enormous, while Tauon’s gallery can remain pleasant if your tags are clean and you browse by album. Neither claim should be treated as a published capacity limit.

What are the main drawbacks and fixes?

Albums are split or duplicated

Check album-artist, album, disc-number, and compilation tags. Correct the metadata, rescan the affected folder, and remove duplicate files from the library path. If two installations are involved, confirm that both are pointing at the same directory.

Lyrics or cover art are missing

Online retrieval depends on the provider, network access, and how accurately the track is tagged. Verify the artist and title fields, then use the player’s refresh or retrieval control. A missing result does not mean the audio file is damaged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gapless playback is interrupted

Confirm that the files are part of the same album and that no crossfade, equalizer, or desktop audio effect is inserting processing between tracks. Hardware and the Linux audio server can also add a pause even when the player supports gapless transitions.

Bit-perfect output does not work as expected

Check the selected output device, mixer mode, sample-rate handling, and system-wide effects. Bluetooth paths, software mixers, and resampling layers can change the stream after it leaves the player. Treat “bit-perfect” as a configuration goal that requires an end-to-end check, not as a guaranteed result on every setup.

The player feels slow after moving the library

Make sure the new disk is mounted before launch and that the old path is not still being scanned. A network share or sleeping external drive can delay indexing. Let the first scan finish, then compare later launches before concluding that the application is inherently slow.

How should I choose between Tauon and Strawberry?

Use this decision checklist rather than choosing by screenshots alone:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose Tauon if album art, a clean visual layout, playlist-led listening, synced lyrics, gapless playback, and no required account are your priorities.
  • Choose Strawberry if you maintain a large or irregular collection, edit metadata frequently, want MusicBrainz-oriented workflows, need broad codec coverage, or care about bit-perfect Linux output.
  • Try both if your library is important enough that migration would be costly. Point each at a read-only copy first, compare album grouping and tag handling, and only then let one application write metadata.

The best choice can also vary by room. Tauon is a strong laptop and desktop browsing experience; Strawberry may be the better workstation tool for maintaining a catalog. Since both can play local files, keeping both installed is a practical way to separate everyday listening from library maintenance.

What is the current Strawberry release?

Strawberry’s official site lists version 1.2.31, released October 3, 2026. The project wiki describes active development, a Qt 6 port, frequent stable releases, and a continuing focus on local playback without resampling. Because distribution repositories may publish a different build, check the version shown by your package source rather than assuming every Linux installation is on 1.2.31.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep Tauon and Strawberry installed at the same time?

Yes. Install them through separate, clearly identified package channels and point both at the same music folder only after making a backup. Avoid editing tags in both applications simultaneously, because the last write can overwrite changes made by the other player.

What does “gapless” playback matter for?

It prevents an artificial pause between consecutive tracks, which is important for live albums, DJ mixes, classical movements, and concept records. The files still need correct ordering, and the Linux audio path must not insert its own transition.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is bit-perfect audio audible on every Linux computer?

Not necessarily. The benefit depends on the recording, your DAC or sound device, the listening chain, and whether the system was already resampling. It is best treated as a reproducible technical setup rather than a guarantee of a dramatic audible difference.

Will my playlists survive if I switch players?

Not automatically in every case. Playlist formats and storage locations differ, so export any playlists using the options provided by your current player and verify the file paths after importing them into the new application.
