What kind of follow-up to Sonic Chronicles do you want?

Why does Sonic Chronicles feel unlike other Sonic games?
Sonic Chronicles is a 2008 Nintendo DS turn-based RPG developed by BioWare and published by Sega. It was Sonic’s first role-playing game and, as GameSpot’s Chris Compendio put it, “The 2008 Nintendo DS game is BioWare’s first–and only–handheld game.” Mark Darrah directed it, while Jay Turner—later a writer on Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3—worked on the script.

The story is more elaborate than a typical Sonic plot but less branching than BioWare’s major computer and console RPGs. Sonic is called back from vacation after Knuckles and the Chaos Emeralds are taken, leading the party toward an alternate-dimension echidna civilization. New characters such as Shade give the adventure a more serious tone than most Sonic games.
Exploration uses the DS stylus in isometric, hand-drawn environments. Sonic can dash and loop, Tails can fly, Knuckles can climb and Amy can smash obstacles, so the active party changes how you navigate. Battles are turn-based for up to four characters, with special POW attacks performed by tapping or sliding on the touch screen. Chao provide battle bonuses and rings serve as currency.

Reception was mixed rather than disastrous. Metacritic lists a 74/100 average from 55 critic reviews, with 25 positive, 30 mixed and no negative notices on its current page. Individual scores ranged from Game Informer’s 8.5/10 and VideoGamer’s 8/10 to 6.5 scores from GameSpot and IGN. The soundtrack remains divisive: later commentary calls its MIDI combat music grating, while Game Informer praised the guitar work. A frequently repeated story that the intended soundtrack was replaced just before release remains an unconfirmed rumor.
Is Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story the closest next game?
Yes, for most DS owners. It combines the elements that make Sonic Chronicles distinctive: a recognizable mascot cast, a bright isometric world, character-specific exploration abilities and battles that reward timed button inputs.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story
AlphaDream’s third Mario & Luigi game develops the Super Mario RPG formula with more elaborate combat timing and a party built around Mario, Luigi and Bowser. Nintendo Life described it as taking the concept “to new heights” and preferred the original DS release to its later 3DS update. It is the safest recommendation if you enjoyed moving Sonic’s party through the overworld more than you cared about BioWare-style role-playing.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
This earlier DS entry uses four-character battles and a similarly comic tone. It is a good second choice if you want more DS-era action commands and do not mind a simpler presentation.
Super Mario RPG
The 1996 SNES game is the template critics invoked when they compared Sega’s RPG to Nintendo’s mascot experiment. Its isometric world, timed attacks, hit points, magic points and humorous party dialogue established the design language that later games—including Sonic Chronicles—borrowed. A modern Switch edition exists, making it the easiest way to play the original concept on current hardware.
Which Nintendo DS RPG should I play after Sonic Chronicles?

This is the best fit for players who liked solving environmental puzzles between battles. It combines magical exploration with turn-based combat and revisits the Golden Sun formula from the Game Boy Advance era. Expect a more traditional fantasy setting and less comedic dialogue than Sonic’s adventure.
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies
Choose this when you want a much longer journey and extensive party construction. The DS release offers class customization, multiplayer and a campaign described as console-sized for the hardware; completionist play takes substantially longer. Unlike Sonic Chronicles, its party can be shaped around the roles and appearances you prefer.

The World Ends With You
This is the pick for players who enjoyed the DS touch screen itself. Its dual-screen combat is built around stylus input and adapts to how the player fights, while the Shibuya setting, fashion and music create a modern urban tone far removed from Sonic’s fantasy landscapes. The Switch version is available, but the original DS design is difficult to reproduce without two screens.
Radiant Historia
Radiant Historia uses time travel as a branching-story puzzle. Its combat is built around manipulating enemy positions, and its cast is more focused than the sprawling party in many classic RPGs. A 3DS version, Perfect Chronology, exists and is not radically different from the DS original.

Pick this for a darker, more demanding alternative. It mixes grid-based strategy with demon negotiation and extensive customization. The tone, difficulty and moral choices are much heavier than Sonic Chronicles, but it is a strong answer for readers who want the DS hardware with deeper systems.
Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver
Chao collecting is only a small echo of the creature-collecting fantasy. These remakes offer the full version of that idea, including Pokémon that follow the player and support for the PokéWalker accessory. They are ideal if assembling and training a team mattered more to you than Sonic’s plot.
What if I want a longer or more traditional RPG?
Dragon Quest IX is the strongest DS answer. It provides a substantial campaign, class-based party planning and optional multiplayer without abandoning turn-based fundamentals. Chrono Trigger is preferable when you value a tighter, more story-led experience, while Final Fantasy IV on DS is the choice for a tougher remake with notably demanding battles.

Which games actually deliver the BioWare experience?
Sonic Chronicles only borrows the surface of BioWare’s formula. Its dialogue choices flavor scenes, but they do not reshape the campaign. For companion relationships, romances and decisions with lasting consequences, choose one of BioWare’s core RPGs or a modern successor.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
This is the clearest historical follow-up. BioWare had already established its companion-driven model in the Star Wars universe before making Sonic Chronicles. Conversations, party loyalty and alignment choices have far greater narrative weight than Sonic’s optional responses.
Mass Effect
The dialogue-wheel comparison appears in nearly every contemporary discussion of Sonic Chronicles. The trilogy offers squad members with personal arcs, recurring decisions and relationships that develop across a larger story. Choose it when the idea of Sonic speaking through multiple tones sounded better than the limited consequences delivered in practice.
Dragon Age
Dragon Age: Origins is the most natural recommendation for fantasy companions and political choices. Mark Darrah, who directed Sonic Chronicles, also directed the first two Dragon Age games, but the scope and complexity of those titles are far greater.
Baldur’s Gate 3
For a current game, Baldur’s Gate 3 is the strongest choice when you want companions whose relationships evolve in response to your actions. Its turn-based battles offer D&D-style freedom, while camp conversations and romances make party members active participants in the story. It is not a medieval version of Mass Effect, but it delivers the consequence-driven companion role-playing that Sonic Chronicles could only suggest.
Two forthcoming science-fiction games—EXODUS, listed for April 7, 2027, and The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, which remains unreleased—are watch-list items rather than games you can play now.

Why was there never a Sonic Chronicles sequel?
The game ends with an ominous “THE END?” card, and no sequel has resolved that cliffhanger. GameSpot’s 2026 retrospective points to two commonly cited obstacles: BioWare’s move under EA did the project no favors, and comic writer and artist Ken Penders sued Sega and EA over similarities between the game’s echidna villains and his Archie Comics characters. The lawsuit was dismissed, but Sega is widely believed to have avoided those characters afterward. No announced sequel or official digital re-release is established in the available record.
What hardware do I need in 2026?
