For most families, DAKboard is the easiest Raspberry Pi dashboard: it is managed in a browser and connects to major calendar, weather, to-do and reminder services without maintaining a local server. Choose Home Screens when you want a free, self-hosted family display with chores, meals, profiles and a visual editor. Choose MagicMirror² when you are comfortable editing configuration files and want the broadest maker-style customization. OpenFrame is another free, open-source option, but its project maturity is less documented.

This guide compares setup, hosting, calendar and weather support, family workflows, display behavior, privacy, hardware and recurring cost so you can select software that fits the people who will actually use the wall display.

Which Raspberry Pi dashboard is best for a family calendar?

There is no single winner for every household. DAKboard minimizes technical work by keeping configuration in the cloud; Home Screens gives you the strongest no-subscription family feature set while running on your own Raspberry Pi; MagicMirror² is the most extensible for technically confident users; and OpenFrame is worth watching if you want an open-source family dashboard with remote controls.

Software Hosting and setup Calendars Weather Family reminders Display approach Recurring cost
DAKboard Cloud-managed; configure screens in a browser Google Calendar, Apple iCloud, Microsoft Office365, Facebook Events and ICS feeds Weatherbit, Apple Weather, OpenWeatherMap and WeatherUnderground, with alerts and air quality Todoist, Microsoft Todo, Google Tasks, Trello, Asana and Scheduled Text with optional audio reminders Pi, tablet, smart TV or browser; suitable for passive wall displays Free tier; Essential $6 monthly or $5 monthly when billed annually; Plus $10 monthly or $8 monthly when billed annually (USD, prices checked October 25, 2026)
Home Screens Free, open-source and self-hosted; visual drag-and-drop editor Calendar modules; exact provider breadth depends on available plugins Weather module Built-in chores, meals, profiles, scheduling and phone remote control Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 with any HDMI screen No subscription or usage limits stated by the project
MagicMirror² Local and configuration-driven; edit the modules array and configuration files Public iCal calendars; multiple calendars can be combined Current and forecast views; OpenWeatherMap, Open-Meteo, WeatherAPI, Environment Canada, Weatherbit and others No built-in family task system in the core; usually requires community modules Highly customizable passive display; touchscreen behavior depends on the modules and interface you add Free and open-source software
OpenFrame Free and open-source; project maturity and release history are not detailed on its official page Google Calendar, Outlook and CalDAV shared calendars Weather feature advertised Reminders, Home Assistant, AI assistant and Telegram remote management Raspberry Pi and other screens Free according to the project page

The table shows the central trade-off: managed convenience versus local control. A family that wants to change schedules from a laptop and never touch configuration files will usually be happiest with DAKboard. A household that wants chores and meal planning without a subscription should start with Home Screens. Makers who enjoy assembling a system from modules will get more freedom from MagicMirror².

Is DAKboard the easiest Raspberry Pi wall display?

Yes, for most non-technical households. DAKboard stores the layout and integrations in its web service, while the Raspberry Pi acts as a screen. You can also display the same dashboard on a tablet, smart TV or ordinary browser, which is useful when a family wants a second screen without rebuilding the project.

Which calendars and tasks can DAKboard show?

Calendar connections include Google Calendar, Apple iCloud Calendar, Microsoft Office365 Calendar, Facebook Events and generic ICS feeds. For tasks, its documented integrations include Todoist, Microsoft Todo, Google Tasks, Trello and Asana. Scheduled Text can place a custom message on the screen and optionally play an audio reminder, which is useful for recurring instructions such as “leave for practice” or “put bins out.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What weather information is available?

You can select Weatherbit, Apple Weather, OpenWeatherMap or WeatherUnderground. DAKboard also advertises weather alerts and air-quality information, allowing a family screen to show more than a temperature number.

How do DAKboard plans differ?

Plan Price in USD Screen and calendar limits Other documented features Calendar refresh
Free $0 One predefined screen; up to two calendars Photos, weather, news/RSS and DAKboard branding 60 minutes
Essential $6 per month, or $5 per month billed annually Two custom screens; up to five calendars All integrations, custom CSS and templates 30 minutes
Plus $10 per month, or $8 per month billed annually Three custom screens; unlimited calendars 500 MB media library, screen loops, scheduling and faster refresh 15 minutes

The annual-billing figures are recurring rates, not one-time purchases. Simple arithmetic puts Essential at $60 per year and Plus at $96 per year when billed annually; paying month to month would total $72 and $120 respectively. The free plan is adequate for a single basic screen, but branding, the predefined layout and slower 60-minute calendar refresh may matter in a busy household.

What is the setup process?

  1. Prepare the display device. Install a supported Raspberry Pi operating system and connect the Pi to the monitor or wall display. DAKOS, the display software used by DAKboard, officially supports Pi 3B, 3B+, 3A+, Pi 4B, Pi 5 and Pi Zero 2W; its support guidance recommends a Pi 4B with 2GB RAM or more.
  2. Create or sign in to your DAKboard account. The service keeps screen configuration online, so layout changes are made from a computer or phone rather than by editing files on the Pi.
  3. Choose a screen layout. Start with the predefined free screen or a custom screen on a paid plan. Add calendar, weather, photo, RSS and task regions in the browser editor.
  4. Authorize each service. Connect the calendars and task providers your household uses, or paste an ICS feed where that is the available option. Check that each feed has the intended visibility before putting the display in a shared space.
  5. Set reminders and refresh expectations. Add Scheduled Text messages, choose optional audio, and remember that calendar updates arrive on the interval associated with your plan.
  6. Point the Pi at the display. Launch the DAKboard display view on the Pi, then test portrait or landscape orientation, legibility from the viewing distance and whether any private event details are visible.

DAKboard markets a five-minute, no-code setup. That is a vendor claim rather than an independent timing result, so allow extra time for account authorization, feed permissions and display mounting.

Is Home Screens the best free self-hosted choice?

Home Screens is the clearest fit when a family wants a visual editor and household workflows without a subscription. It is free, open source and self-hosted, with 45 modules listed on its current project page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which family features are built in?

Its documented modules cover calendars, chores, meals, photos, weather and profiles. Scheduling, phone remote control and plugins extend the system beyond a static information board. Profiles are useful when different family members need their own tasks or views, while chores and meals address routines that generic calendar software often leaves to separate apps.

What hardware does Home Screens require?

The project targets a Raspberry Pi 4 or Pi 5 connected to any HDMI screen. Plan for a reliable power supply, storage for the operating system and a display that can remain on for the hours you need. Unlike a browser-only service, a self-hosted installation leaves you responsible for updates, backups and replacing a failing SD card or other storage.

What are the privacy implications?

Home Screens has no cloud dependency for its core operation and states that it has no subscriptions or usage limits. However, its FAQ says anonymous telemetry is enabled by default. The reported data includes an install ID, platform and processor, display resolution and orientation, counts of displays, screens and modules, and counts by module type. If that metadata is unacceptable, review the project’s current telemetry controls before deployment rather than assuming “self-hosted” means no outbound data at all.

When should you choose MagicMirror²?

Choose MagicMirror² when you value control over convenience. It is a local, open-source modular platform: the default configuration includes Clock, Calendar, Weather, News Feed, Compliments, Hello World and Alert, and you extend it by editing configuration files and installing community modules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do calendars work?

The calendar module reads public iCal calendars and can combine multiple calendars in one display. That makes it a good match for a household that can publish or otherwise provide iCal feeds. It is less approachable than an account-authorized visual editor because adding or changing a feed involves configuration rather than clicking through a hosted dashboard.

Which weather providers are supported?

Weather can show current conditions or forecasts. Documented providers include OpenWeatherMap, Open-Meteo, WeatherAPI, Environment Canada and Weatherbit, among others. The default weather update interval is 600,000 milliseconds, or 10 minutes. You can select a provider that covers your location, then configure its credentials and location details in the module settings.

How do chores and reminders fit in?

The core documentation does not present a built-in family task system. Chores, shopping lists or reminder panels generally come from third-party community modules, so you must evaluate whether each module is maintained, compatible with your MagicMirror version and safe to run. This modularity is powerful, but it shifts maintenance and troubleshooting to you.

What is OpenFrame, and is it ready for a family display?

OpenFrame describes itself as a free, open-source family dashboard for Raspberry Pi and other screens. Its advertised feature set includes shared calendars through Google Calendar, Outlook or CalDAV, photos, weather, Home Assistant, reminders, an AI assistant and Telegram-based remote management.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is appealing if those integrations match your household, especially if you want to administer the display through Telegram instead of walking to the Pi. The official page does not provide a detailed release history or pricing table, so treat OpenFrame as an emerging option: verify current installation instructions, compatibility, issue activity and update cadence before making it the only household information source.

How do the four options compare for common family needs?

Need Best starting point Why What to watch
Fast, browser-based setup DAKboard Managed configuration and broad account integrations Cloud dependency, plan limits and refresh intervals
Chores and meal planning without a subscription Home Screens Family modules, profiles and visual editing are part of the project You maintain the Pi and should review default telemetry
Maximum visual and functional customization MagicMirror² Local modules and configuration can be changed extensively Technical setup and community-module maintenance
CalDAV, Home Assistant and Telegram control OpenFrame Those integrations are specifically advertised Less public detail about release maturity
Multiple display types DAKboard Pi, tablet, smart TV and browser can act as displays Some advanced screen features require paid plans
Keeping data on your own network Home Screens or MagicMirror² Both are presented as self-hosted or local projects Feeds and optional telemetry still need privacy review

What Raspberry Pi hardware should you use?

A Raspberry Pi 4 Model B with at least 2GB of RAM is the safest common denominator in this comparison. DAKOS explicitly supports the Pi 4B and recommends the 2GB version or higher; Home Screens targets Pi 4 or Pi 5. MagicMirror² and OpenFrame are Raspberry Pi projects, but their exact hardware recommendations can vary by module and display resolution.

  • Board: Pi 4 Model B 2GB or better gives you headroom for a browser-based display and additional modules.
  • Power: Use a supply rated for your board and display accessories; undervoltage can look like software instability.
  • Storage: Use dependable storage and keep a backup of configuration. Self-hosted projects make recovery easier when you can restore a known-good image.
  • Screen: Home Screens explicitly requires an HDMI screen. For any option, check brightness, viewing angle, resolution and whether portrait mounting is supported by the monitor.
  • Mounting and input: A passive wall display needs no keyboard after setup, while a touchscreen or nearby keyboard can make local edits easier. Touch behavior depends on the software and modules rather than on the Pi alone.

Hardware prices and inventory change frequently. Verify the exact Pi board revision, power supply, storage and display together before ordering instead of relying on an old bundle listing.

How should you configure calendars, weather and reminders?

Start with the household’s existing services, not with the screen layout. A dashboard becomes useful when every item has an owner and an update path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. List the sources. Write down each calendar (school, work, appointments), weather location and reminder list. Identify duplicates before connecting them.
  2. Choose visibility. Decide whether the display should show event titles, times only or private details. A wall in a shared room should not expose sensitive descriptions by default.
  3. Pick the software based on integration needs. DAKboard has the broadest named calendar and task integrations in this comparison. MagicMirror² is appropriate when you can supply public iCal feeds. Home Screens is strongest when chores, meals and profiles matter more than a long provider list.
  4. Set refresh expectations. DAKboard’s documented calendar refresh is 60 minutes on Free, 30 minutes on Essential and 15 minutes on Plus. MagicMirror²’s documented default weather interval is 10 minutes. A change made in a source service may therefore take time to appear.
  5. Test failure states. Temporarily disconnect a feed or use an invalid location to see how the dashboard signals errors. Record the correction path while you still have a keyboard and administrator access.
  6. Make ownership explicit. Assign one person to review feeds and software updates monthly. A family display should not depend on a single forgotten account or an expired token.

What are the main privacy and maintenance trade-offs?

Cloud-managed DAKboard is convenient because the Pi mainly renders a remote dashboard, but your layout and connected services are managed through a third-party account. The free and paid plans also differ in branding, screen count, calendar count and refresh speed.

Home Screens and MagicMirror² keep the main application on your hardware. That can reduce dependence on a vendor account and keep configuration local, but you become responsible for operating-system updates, backups, module compatibility and network access. Home Screens’ default anonymous telemetry is a specific exception to the assumption that every self-hosted component is completely silent.

OpenFrame’s advertised integrations may require access to external services such as Google Calendar, Outlook, CalDAV, Home Assistant or Telegram. Review each integration’s permissions independently; open-source licensing does not automatically make every connected service private.

How do you troubleshoot a dashboard that is not updating?

Calendar events are missing

  • Confirm that the account or ICS/iCal feed still has permission to share the calendar.
  • Check the dashboard’s documented refresh interval before assuming it is broken.
  • Verify time zone and calendar visibility settings, especially after daylight-saving changes.
  • For MagicMirror², validate the feed URL and module syntax in the configuration file; one malformed entry can prevent a module from loading.

Weather is stale or unavailable

  • Check the provider selection, API credential and location identifier.
  • Remember that MagicMirror² defaults to a 10-minute weather update interval, while network or provider outages can extend the apparent delay.
  • Try a provider supported in your region rather than changing the display hardware first.

The screen is blank or keeps returning to the desktop

  • Check power, HDMI connection and display input before changing software.
  • Confirm that the Pi can reach the network if the dashboard is cloud-managed or uses online feeds.
  • Review recent module or plugin changes. Remove the last change and restore the previous configuration if the failure began immediately afterward.

Family members stop using it

Reduce clutter before adding more modules. Put the next actionable item—today’s schedule, the chore owner or the departure reminder—in the most readable area, and move low-value news or photos to a secondary screen or loop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which dashboard should you choose?

Choose DAKboard when convenience is the priority

Pick DAKboard if several people need to edit the display from a browser, your calendars span multiple providers, and you prefer managed hosting. The free plan can validate the concept; Essential is the practical step up for custom layouts and up to five calendars; Plus is aimed at households that need unlimited calendars, loops, scheduling and faster refresh.

Choose Home Screens when family workflows matter most

Pick Home Screens if chores, meals, profiles and a visual editor are more important than a polished hosted service. It is the strongest fit for a no-subscription household display, provided you are willing to maintain a Pi 4 or Pi 5 and account for its documented anonymous telemetry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can MagicMirror² combine calendars from more than one source?

Yes. Its calendar module can combine multiple public iCal calendars into one view. Each feed must remain reachable and correctly formatted, so households should test permissions and URLs whenever a calendar owner changes sharing settings.

Does a self-hosted dashboard guarantee that no information leaves my network?

No. Home Screens says anonymous telemetry is enabled by default, including an install ID and counts of displays, screens and modules. Connected calendar, weather, Home Assistant or messaging services can also transmit data according to their own policies.

Why can a newly added event take time to appear on the wall?

The dashboard checks its source on a schedule rather than necessarily updating instantly. DAKboard documents 60-, 30- and 15-minute calendar refresh intervals for Free, Essential and Plus, respectively; source-service delays can add more time.

Is OpenFrame a mature replacement for established dashboard projects?

Its feature list is broad, but the official page does not publish a detailed release history or pricing table. Treat it as an emerging project and verify installation guidance, compatibility and maintenance activity before making it your only family reminder system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a touchscreen with these Raspberry Pi dashboards?

The software can render on a screen, but interactive behavior depends on the project and modules. DAKboard also supports tablets and browsers as display devices, while Home Screens specifically targets an HDMI screen; verify touch support for the exact interface you plan to deploy.
