Ask what the AI does for your exact heart imaging exam, which software or device the center uses, who reviews its output, what evidence supports it for patients like you, and how your images and results are handled. Then compare each center’s clinicians, experience with the requested exam, access, insurance status, and expected cost. “AI-assisted” can describe several different tasks; the label alone does not tell you whether the tool is suitable for your exam or how much it affects your care.

Use the questions below when you call or visit a center. Ask about the specific exam your treating clinician has requested, rather than AI in general. The answers should help you understand the tool’s role and the center’s process; they do not replace your clinician’s advice about which imaging test is appropriate.

What does “AI-assisted” mean for my heart imaging exam?

Ask the center to describe exactly what the AI does in the exam you are considering. The term can cover different functions, and knowing the function is the first step toward judging whether the tool is relevant to your care.

  • Image acquisition: Does software help capture the images?
  • Image processing: Does it process or improve images after they are captured?
  • Measurement: Does it calculate measurements from the images?
  • Flagging or triage: Does it identify images or findings for a clinician to review or prioritize?
  • Diagnostic decision support: Does it provide information intended to support a diagnostic decision?

These functions are not interchangeable. A tool that supports image acquisition is being used for a different task from one that flags a possible finding or supports diagnosis. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says the intended use and technological characteristics of a device matter to its regulatory review. Ask the center to explain the tool’s role in plain language, including whether its output changes how images are captured, interpreted, or communicated.

If the answer is simply “we use AI,” ask for a concrete example of what the software contributes to your exam. You are looking for a description tied to the requested test, not a general claim about the center’s technology.

What is the name of the AI tool, and what is its FDA status for this use?

Ask for the product’s name and the use the center makes of it, then check the FDA’s public AI-enabled device list and the linked database entry. Regulatory status applies to a product’s specific intended use, so a general statement that a center uses “FDA-approved AI” is not enough to identify the tool or what it is authorized to do.

The FDA describes a risk-based approach to medical-device oversight, including AI-enabled devices. Depending on the device and its intended use, pathways listed by the FDA include 510(k) clearance, De Novo classification, and premarket approval. These terms describe regulatory pathways; they do not by themselves tell you whether a particular tool was evaluated for your exact exam, clinical task, or patient group.

The FDA’s public list identifies devices that met applicable premarket requirements and links to public database entries, but the agency says the list is not comprehensive and is updated periodically. Therefore, if you cannot find a product in the list, that absence alone does not prove that it lacks authorization. Ask the center to clarify the product’s status and intended use, and use the FDA database entry to verify the details when available.

As of September 2026, the FDA reported that more than 1,600 AI-enabled medical devices had been authorized for U.S. marketing. That is a broad count across medical devices—not a count of cardiac-imaging tools and not evidence that any particular product is suitable for an individual patient.

Who reviews the AI output and takes responsibility for the interpretation?

Ask which qualified clinician reviews the images and AI output, who makes or confirms the final interpretation, and who will explain the result to you. FDA materials describe AI-enabled devices as tools that may support clinical decision-making; they do not establish the review workflow at an individual imaging center.

Ask the center to describe its actual process rather than relying on a general assurance that a clinician is involved. Useful details include whether the clinician sees the images as well as the software output, how the output is incorporated into the interpretation, and who is responsible for communicating the final result.

If the AI output conflicts with what the clinician sees, ask who resolves that discrepancy. You should also find out what happens when the images are poor quality or the software cannot provide a useful result. Possible responses might include repeating images, obtaining another interpretation, or considering another test or clinician, but the sources available do not establish one universal protocol. The center should explain its own approach.

What evidence supports this tool for my exam and patient group?

Ask what evidence supports using the tool for your specific imaging modality and clinical task, and whether it has been evaluated in patients like you. A result from one kind of imaging task or patient group should not automatically be treated as evidence for a different task or population.

The FDA explains that evaluation depends on a device’s intended use and technological characteristics. Different tasks—including rule-out, triage, diagnosis, prognosis, risk assessment, therapy, and image acquisition—can require different performance measures and reference standards. Ask the center what evidence it relies on for the tool’s role in your exam, what limitations it recognizes, and whether it can explain how that evidence relates to your situation.

No center-specific performance figures or comparative outcome data are established here. If a center quotes a performance number, ask what task it measured, which patients were included, what comparison or reference standard was used, and whether the figure applies to the software’s use at that location. A number without that context can be difficult to interpret.

In January 2026, an FDA-hosted Yale University/Mayo Clinic CERSI presentation described work using a literature review, provider and patient focus groups, and a national survey to identify information needs for transparency and trust in AI/ML cardiac devices and software. The event description does not provide survey figures, so it should not be used to claim a particular level of patient trust or a specific outcome.

What happens if the AI is uncertain or the images are inadequate?

Ask the center what it does when the software cannot analyze an image confidently or the images are not adequate for interpretation. The important thing is to understand how the case proceeds rather than assume every scan produces a reliable AI result.

Ask whether the center has a process for identifying inadequate images, how a clinician becomes involved, and whether another step may be considered. The center may describe repeating images, obtaining an additional interpretation, or discussing another test or clinician. These are questions to clarify with that center, not a single protocol established for all facilities.

Also ask whether the final report will indicate when the AI could not provide useful output or when the clinician’s interpretation differs from it. The available sources do not establish a required format for reporting uncertainty. A clear explanation of the center’s own practice helps you know what to expect and whom to contact with questions.

How are my images and personal information stored or used?

Ask the center how it stores and protects your images and personal information, who can access them, whether they are shared, and whether they may be used to improve or train the AI tool. Privacy terms are center- and product-specific; the FDA-hosted cardiac AI transparency work does not establish the terms used by an individual facility.

Request the center’s privacy explanation and ask whether the tool’s use changes who receives your images or how long they are retained. If the center says data may be used to improve the software, ask what kind of information is involved and how the center explains that use to patients. Do not assume the answer from the fact that the exam is performed at a medical facility or that the product has FDA status.

Will I be told that AI was used, and who can explain my result?

Ask how the center lets patients know when AI is involved and whom you can contact after the exam to discuss the result. The FDA-hosted transparency research focuses on information patients and clinicians need for trust and acceptance, but the available material does not establish a single required disclosure format or confirm any center’s actual practice.

Before the appointment, find out how and when results are communicated, who answers questions about the report, and whether questions about the software’s role should go to the interpreting clinician or another staff member. If the center gives you a general contact number, ask which team or role can address questions about the final interpretation.

How should I compare two centers for the same exam?

Compare centers on the same requested exam and modality, not on broad claims about who uses the most AI. The AI is one part of the decision; clinical qualifications, experience with the test, access, insurance, and cost also matter.

What to compare Question to ask each center What to record
Requested exam Can you perform the exact test and modality my clinician requested? Exam and modality confirmed
AI tool and function What is the product name, and what does it do during this exam? Product name and specific function
Review process Who reviews the images and output, and who communicates the final interpretation? Clinician role and communication route
Evidence and limitations What evidence supports this use, and what limitations should I understand? Task, patient group, evidence explanation, and stated limits
Information handling How are images and personal information accessed, shared, stored, or used to improve the tool? Privacy explanation and data-use terms
Qualifications and experience What are the relevant clinician qualifications, accreditation, and experience with this specific test? Answers for the requested exam and location
Practical access What appointment availability and accessibility arrangements are available? Timing and access details
Coverage and cost Are you in my insurance network, and what is my expected out-of-pocket cost? Confirmation from center and insurer

No center-level comparison dataset, accreditation details, prices, insurance coverage, staff qualifications, privacy terms, or outcomes are established in the available sources. Confirm those details directly with the center and insurer, and ask your treating clinician which modality is appropriate. Center answers are most useful when they are specific to the requested exam and location.

How can I prepare for the conversation and use the answers?

Have the name of the requested exam and modality available, then take notes so you can compare centers on the same points. If a term or answer is unclear, ask the center to explain it in ordinary language before deciding what it means for your care.

  1. Confirm the exam. Ask your treating clinician what specific imaging test and modality are being requested. Use that wording when contacting each center.
  2. Ask the same core questions. Record the AI product name and function, the clinician review process, the evidence and limitations described, and the center’s approach to inadequate images or uncertain output.
  3. Check the public regulatory information. Use the FDA AI-enabled device list and linked database entry if available. Remember that the agency says the list is not comprehensive and is periodically updated.
  4. Verify practical details separately. Confirm qualifications, relevant accreditation, experience, scheduling, accessibility, insurance network status, and expected out-of-pocket cost with the center, insurer, and treating clinician as appropriate.
  5. Resolve unanswered questions before booking. Ask who can explain the result, how to reach that person, and what the center does not know or cannot confirm about the tool’s use for your exam.

A center’s answers should help you understand the service being offered, not pressure you to choose it. If the center cannot explain the AI’s role, who reviews its output, or how it handles unclear cases, ask for clarification and discuss the options with your treating clinician. The FDA’s 2026 generative-AI discussion paper addresses risk assessment, premarket evaluation, and postmarket monitoring, but the FDA says it is for discussion and feedback—not draft or final guidance or proposed policy—so it should not be presented as a set of binding requirements for imaging centers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does FDA authorization mean an AI tool is right for every patient?

No. FDA oversight is tied to a device’s intended use and characteristics, while suitability for a particular exam and patient depends on the clinical context. Ask the center and your treating clinician how the tool’s evaluated use relates to your case.

Is the FDA’s 2026 generative-AI discussion paper a rule for imaging centers?

No. The FDA describes the 2026 paper as a discussion document for feedback, not draft or final guidance and not proposed policy. It should not be treated as a binding set of center requirements.

Is there one standard form that centers must use to disclose AI?

The available FDA-hosted transparency material does not establish a single required disclosure format. Ask the facility directly how it tells patients when AI is involved and how to get questions about the result answered.
