The right expansion storage depends entirely on your console. PS5 accepts a commercially available PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe SSD installed in its internal expansion bay; Xbox Series X|S uses a dedicated storage expansion card built for Xbox Velocity Architecture. They are different product categories and are not interchangeable.
For PS5, a 2TB M.2 drive with a correctly sized heatsink is the practical sweet spot. The strongest ready-to-install choices are the Seagate Game Drive PS5 NVMe SSD and WD_BLACK SN850P. For Xbox Series X|S, choose a 2TB expansion card such as the Seagate Storage Expansion Card or WD_BLACK C50. The specifications below are manufacturer figures, not independent loading-time tests.

What is the difference between PS5 storage and Xbox Series X|S storage expansion?
PS5 expansion is an internal M.2 installation. You open the console’s expansion bay, fit a standard-size PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe drive with heat dissipation, and format it in the console. Xbox Series X|S expansion is a proprietary-style card that plugs into the console’s expansion port and is documented to match the performance path used by Xbox Velocity Architecture.
This distinction determines what you should buy. A PC M.2 drive is not an Xbox expansion card, and an Xbox card is not a PS5-compatible M.2 module. Do not treat a generic external SSD as a substitute for the Xbox expansion-card format unless an authoritative Xbox source specifically confirms that model.

Which PS5 SSD is best for large games?
The Seagate Game Drive PS5 NVMe SSD is the clearest all-round recommendation for PS5 because it is officially licensed, includes a custom heatsink, and is sold for both Digital and Standard Editions. The WD_BLACK SN850P is a close alternative with the same advertised read figure and a slightly different advertised write figure. Both are product-specific PS5 choices rather than bare drives that require you to source a compatible cooler.
1. Seagate Game Drive PS5 NVMe SSD
Seagate lists capacities up to 2TB, sequential read speeds up to 7,300MB/s and sequential write speeds up to 6,900MB/s. Its custom heatsink is intended to provide the required heat-dissipation hardware, and Seagate states that PS5 and PS4 games can operate directly from the M.2 SSD.
The advantage is fit simplicity: you are buying a drive marketed specifically for the PS5 expansion bay rather than assembling a drive and separate heatsink. Confirm the capacity and the installed heatsink’s dimensions against your exact console model before purchase, because Sony’s limits apply to the complete assembly.
2. WD_BLACK SN850P NVMe SSD for PS5
Western Digital describes the SN850P as an officially licensed PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD for PS5. Its advertised sequential performance is up to 7,300MB/s read and 6,600MB/s write.
Choose it when the available capacity, retailer price or warranty terms suit you better than the Seagate model. The licensing and PS5-specific positioning simplify compatibility, but you still need to verify the capacity and heatsink dimensions for your console. A higher number on a specification sheet does not by itself establish faster game loading in every title.

What PS5 M.2 SSD requirements must you check?
Sony’s requirements are mechanical as well as electrical. A drive can have an impressive speed rating and still be unsuitable if its length, width or combined heatsink thickness exceeds the console’s limits.
Interface and capacity
- The drive must be a PCIe Gen4x4 supported M.2 NVMe SSD.
- M.2 SATA SSDs are not supported.
- Sony’s CFI-7002 guide lists capacities from 250GB to 8TB.
- Sony’s CFI-2016 guide lists capacities from 250GB to 4TB.
Because those two current guides specify different maximum capacities, identify your exact PS5 model and follow its documentation. Do not assume that an 8TB drive is valid for every PS5 revision.

Physical dimensions
Sony lists supported module lengths of 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110. The maximum width is 25mm. The maximum total thickness is 11.25mm, and that measurement includes the SSD plus its heat-dissipation mechanism, such as a heatsink, heat-conductor or transfer sheet.
Measure the complete installed assembly, not just the bare circuit board. A double-sided module or oversized cooler can exceed the limit even when the SSD itself appears to match the listed length.
Why a heatsink matters
Sony warns that the M.2 SSD must have a heat-dissipation mechanism. That can be a heatsink or another compatible heat-transfer solution, but it must remain within the 25mm width and 11.25mm total-thickness limits. The two PS5-focused products above are attractive partly because their cooling configuration is part of the product rather than an afterthought.

How do you install an M.2 SSD in a PS5?
Have the compatible M.2 drive, its correctly sized cooling hardware, a clean workspace and the instructions for your PS5 model ready. The console formats the drive on first use, so copy or back up anything important before beginning and expect the new drive to be erased during setup.
- Turn the PS5 off completely, disconnect its cables and allow it to cool before opening the expansion area.
- Remove the console’s expansion-slot cover according to Sony’s model-specific guide.
- Adjust the expansion-bay spacer to match the SSD’s supported length: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110.
- Insert the M.2 SSD into the connector at the correct angle, then lower it into place.
- Secure the drive with the supplied screw and spacer. Do not force the module or leave it loose.
- Replace the expansion-slot cover and the console cover.
- Reconnect the console and start it. When prompted, follow the on-screen formatting process for the M.2 SSD.
If the console does not recognize the drive, shut down again and check the connector seating, the screw and spacer position, the capacity range for your PS5 model, the Gen4x4 NVMe requirement and the complete heatsink dimensions. A drive that is electrically compatible can still fail the physical-limit check.

How do you install and use an Xbox Series X|S expansion card?
Xbox’s expansion-card format is a plug-in upgrade rather than an internal M.2 installation. Match the card to an Xbox Series X or Series S console, insert it into the dedicated expansion port, and let the console detect and configure it. Keep the card’s connector and port free of dust, and do not treat the card as a generic bare NVMe module.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Power on the Xbox Series X or Series S and locate the dedicated storage expansion port on the console.
- Remove the card’s protective cap without touching the connector contacts.
- Insert the card firmly into the expansion port until it is fully seated.
- Wait for the console to recognize the card and complete any on-screen setup.
- Use the storage settings to choose where new games and apps are installed, or move existing titles to the card.
- Keep the card inserted while using Quick Resume entries or games stored on it; eject it only through the console’s safe-removal process if the interface provides one.
The cited Xbox documentation establishes the expansion card as the direct-play expansion path for optimized games. It does not make a generic USB SSD or a PC M.2 drive an equivalent replacement.
Is a 2TB expansion drive worth choosing over 1TB?
For a library dominated by large current-generation games, 2TB is the most balanced target on either platform. It leaves room for several substantial installs while reducing the frequency of moving titles between internal and expanded storage. A smaller capacity costs less at purchase but reaches its limit sooner; the practical choice depends on how many games you keep installed simultaneously.
On PS5, remember that the console model can impose a separate maximum-capacity limit: the cited CFI-2016 guide tops out at 4TB, while the CFI-7002 guide goes to 8TB. On Xbox, both cited cards are available in 2TB versions, with the C50 also offering a 512GB option.

Should you choose by advertised read speed?
No. The two PS5 candidates both advertise up to 7,300MB/s sequential read, yet that number alone does not establish identical loading times in every game. Manufacturer figures are specification-sheet results, and game engines, installation layout and other system behavior can affect what players experience.

- Buying the wrong storage category: An Xbox Series X|S console needs an expansion card, while PS5 needs an internal PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe SSD.
- Ignoring the exact PS5 model: CFI-7002 and CFI-2016 documentation lists different maximum capacities.
- Forgetting the heatsink dimensions: Sony’s 11.25mm limit includes the SSD and cooling hardware together.
- Choosing M.2 SATA for PS5: Sony explicitly says M.2 SATA SSDs are unsupported.
- Assuming speed ratings predict every game: Advertised sequential figures are not independent comparative loading results.
- Using an unverified generic drive on Xbox: The cited documentation supports the dedicated expansion-card format for optimized Xbox Series X|S games.
- Skipping a capacity check: Confirm whether the listed capacity is 512GB, 1TB, 2TB or another size before ordering.
How we picked these four products
The selection follows the platform’s documented expansion method first. PS5 picks were limited to officially licensed PCIe Gen4 NVMe products with PS5-specific positioning and suitable heat-dissipation hardware. Xbox picks were limited to expansion cards documented for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Velocity Architecture and Quick Resume.
Within each platform, the comparison emphasizes capacity, physical fit, installation format, licensing, warranty information and the manufacturer’s stated compatibility. Current retailer prices and stock are not included because they change independently of the hardware specifications and must be checked at the time of purchase.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the Seagate Game Drive PS5 NVMe SSD if you want the simplest PS5 internal-storage upgrade with a custom heatsink and a PS5-focused license. Choose the WD_BLACK SN850P when its capacity, price or availability is more attractive and its complete dimensions fit your console.
