For Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 Pro, start with Ray Tracing if you want Sony’s stated 60-fps experience while adding selected ray-traced shadows and reflections. Choose Performance when responsiveness matters most and your screen supports VRR; Sony describes it as reaching up to 90 fps on a VRR-enabled display. Choose Ray Tracing Pro for the broadest listed lighting, shadow, reflection and ambient-occlusion effects, with a 40-fps target on a compatible high-refresh-rate display.
The “$899 Cyberpunk release” is a misleading shorthand. The $899.99 figure is Sony’s U.S. recommended retail price for the PS5 Pro, effective April 2, 2026—not the price of Cyberpunk 2077 and not a charge for its free PS5 Pro enhancement. These are the three PS5 Pro enhancement modes. They are not the older standard-PS5 Performance and Ray-tracing pair, and they are not PC graphics presets.
What does the $899.99 Cyberpunk release actually mean?
There is no $899 Cyberpunk 2077 edition. Sony’s U.S. recommended retail price for the PS5 Pro became $899.99 on April 2, 2026. That is the console price, not the game price and not a bundle price that includes Cyberpunk 2077.

Sony describes the Cyberpunk 2077 PS5 Pro enhancement as free for the game. You still need a PS5 Pro and a compatible copy of the game. Sony lists Cyberpunk 2077 base and PS5 Ultimate editions as separate purchase paths; the existence of the free enhancement does not turn the game into a free download.
The price is U.S.-specific. Sony publishes different recommended retail prices in other regions, so do not convert $899.99 into a worldwide price without checking the local PlayStation store or retailer.

Use your display and your priorities as the decision rule. Ray Tracing is the safest starting point for a mixture of image effects and responsiveness; Performance is the response-first option; Ray Tracing Pro is for players willing to accept a lower frame-rate target to see every listed lighting effect.
Performance: choose it for response
Performance prioritizes smoothness and control response over the ray-tracing emphasis of the other two modes. Sony describes an up-to-90-fps position when the PS5 Pro is connected to a VRR-enabled display. “Up to” is important: it is a ceiling in Sony’s description, not a promise that every scene will run at 90 fps or that a 60-Hz screen can show it.
This is the logical choice for driving, gunplay and fast camera movement if you notice judder or prefer the lowest practical control latency. It is also the least useful choice for someone whose television cannot use VRR or refresh above 60 Hz, because that display cannot take advantage of the advertised conditions.
Ray Tracing: the balanced starting point
Sony describes Ray Tracing mode as delivering a stable 60-fps experience while adding selected ray-traced shadows and reflections. Sony also notes that VRR can provide additional smoothness. The mode therefore sits between Performance’s response-first approach and Ray Tracing Pro’s broader effect set.

Pick this mode when you want a visible lighting upgrade but do not want to make the 40-fps target of Ray Tracing Pro your baseline. It is the most sensible default for a 60-Hz television, provided the screen can display the console’s supported 4K and HDR output.
Ray Tracing Pro: choose it for the fullest listed effects
Ray Tracing Pro adds the broadest set of effects Sony lists for the PS5 Pro enhancement: reflections, shadows, ambient occlusion, skylight and emissive lighting. Sony gives this mode a 40-fps target on a compatible high-refresh-rate display.
A 40-fps target is not the same as a measured, locked result. It describes Sony’s intended operating point under the stated display condition. This mode makes the most sense on a high-refresh-rate screen that can present a 40-fps cadence cleanly and for players who value lighting detail more than maximum responsiveness.
What are the exact differences between the three enhanced modes?

Do you need VRR or a high-refresh-rate display?
You do not need VRR to launch the game or select a mode, but you do need the appropriate display capability to benefit from Sony’s higher-refresh-rate descriptions. VRR matters specifically to the Performance mode’s up-to-90-fps wording. Ray Tracing Pro’s 40-fps target calls for a compatible high-refresh-rate display.

Sony does not identify one universally best television or publish compatibility evidence for every model. A capability checklist is safer than choosing a particular model solely from a marketing label.
How does PSSR fit into Cyberpunk 2077’s enhancement?
PSSR is Sony’s AI-based upscaling system. In a March 16, 2026 explanation, Sony’s Sid Shuman described it this way: “PSSR is an AI library that analyzes each frame pixel by pixel as it upscales game visuals.” Sony lists Cyberpunk 2077 among games supporting enhanced PSSR, and Mark Cerny said more than 50 PS5 Pro titles were using PSSR as of February 27, 2026.

Sony says the setting can apply upgraded PSSR to other already-PSSR-supported games, that results can vary, and that you can turn it off if unexpected visual effects appear. The setting does not replace installing the Cyberpunk 2077 game update, nor does enabling it guarantee a visible improvement in this specifically patched title.
How do you set up the best mode on PS5 Pro?
Prepare the software and confirm the screen’s capabilities before judging a mode. The following sequence avoids confusing a missing update with a display limitation.
- Update the PS5 Pro system software. A current system is required for the latest console features and display options.
- Update Cyberpunk 2077. The three modes belong to the PS5 Pro enhancement. If the game is not updated, the enhanced choices may not appear.
- Confirm the display. Check whether the connected screen supports VRR, a high refresh rate, 4K and HDR. Record which of those capabilities are actually available to the console.
- Review Enhance PSSR Image Quality. On the PS5 Pro, open the system Settings and locate the option with that exact name in the display or system-video controls. Leave it enabled if the image looks correct; disable it if you see unexpected visual effects. Sony treats it as optional.
- Open Cyberpunk 2077’s graphics settings. Select Performance, Ray Tracing or Ray Tracing Pro from the PS5 Pro enhanced choices shown by the updated game. The exact placement of the selector can change with the game’s interface, so use the labels presented by your installed version.
- Start with Ray Tracing. Use it as the balanced baseline. Move to Performance if response is more important, or to Ray Tracing Pro if the broader lighting set matters more and your display supports the stated condition.
- Compare on your own screen. Check fast turns, driving, dark interiors and reflective surfaces. Treat the comparison as a preference decision, not as proof that Sony’s target is a guaranteed measurement.
What should you do if a mode or frame-rate behavior is missing?
The three PS5 Pro choices do not appear
Confirm that you are running the PS5 version of the game, the console is a PS5 Pro, and Cyberpunk 2077 has finished updating. Sony’s enhanced modes are separate from the historical standard-PS5 Performance and Ray-tracing choices, so seeing only the older pair can indicate that the PS5 Pro enhancement is not active.
Performance does not reach the expected smoothness
Check whether the display reports VRR support and whether the console is actually connected to a VRR-capable input. Sony’s wording is “up to 90 fps,” so even a correctly configured setup should not be interpreted as a locked 90-fps output in every scene.

Ray Tracing Pro looks less smooth than expected
Verify that the screen is a compatible high-refresh-rate display. The mode’s 40-fps figure is a target under that condition, not a guarantee of identical frame pacing in every scene. If responsiveness is more important, switch to Ray Tracing or Performance.
The picture shows unexpected artifacts after enabling PSSR
Sony provides the Enhance PSSR Image Quality option as something you can turn off when unexpected visual effects occur. Disable that optional setting and compare the game again; do not assume the toggle substitutes for the dedicated game update.
The console or game shows the wrong price expectation
Separate the hardware purchase from the game purchase. The $899.99 figure is the U.S. PS5 Pro recommended retail price effective April 2, 2026; Sony’s free enhancement does not mean Cyberpunk 2077 itself is included.

What is and is not established about performance?
Sony’s published descriptions establish the intended distinctions between the modes and the display conditions attached to them. They do not establish a universal locked frame rate, frame-time graph, input-latency figure or best television ranking. A target can vary by scene and by the way a particular display handles refresh and VRR.

Does the PS4 version receive these enhancements?
No. Sony says the PS4 version stopped receiving patches after November 8, 2022. Later patches and Phantom Liberty require PS5, and the three modes discussed here are specifically the PS5 Pro enhancement.
Do not treat an old PS4 installation, a standard PS5 installation or the historical standard-PS5 mode pair as evidence that the PS5 Pro options are available. The console generation and the installed game version are separate requirements.
