OpenCritic lists a 95 Top Critic Average, 97% critics recommend it, and 219 critic reviews are aggregated (OpenCritic, 2026). HowLongToBeat reports about 60 hours for the main story, 101 hours for main story plus sides and 136 hours for completionist play (2026). That makes it the best value for players seeking a months-long project, but a poor fit if you want a guided, low-friction adventure.
2. Ghost of Yōtei — the current PlayStation Studios choice
Ghost of Yōtei is a PS5-exclusive, standalone story set in 1600s rural northern Japan. You play Atsu, a lone mercenary hunting the gang responsible for her family’s death, 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima. Jin Sakai does not return, and you do not need the earlier game to understand Atsu’s story.

The narrative keeps pulling you forward, but side activities and open regions provide room to wander.

5. Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut — the established samurai alternative
Director’s Cut remains the right buy if you missed Jin Sakai’s original journey or prefer Tsushima’s island setting to Yōtei’s Ezo. It includes the Iki Island expansion and Legends co-op, and its katana, bow and stealth systems remain among the most readable open-world combat designs on PlayStation.
The game runs on PS4 and PS5; the PS5 version targets dynamic 4K at 60 frames per second. A PS4 disc upgrade requires a disc-drive PS5 and the disc inserted to play. If you already finished Tsushima, Yōtei is the better next purchase because it advances the design rather than retelling Jin’s story.
6. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II — historical simulation over fantasy power
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is for players who want medieval life, social consequences and quests that expect preparation. Its two regions, Trosky and Kuttenberg, support hundreds of quests, and equipment, clothing and reputation affect how characters respond to Henry. The opening deliberately leaves you underpowered, so expect a steeper learning curve than in most cinematic action RPGs.
OpenCritic lists 89. Nantoka Game estimates roughly 55 hours for the main story and 100 hours with additional content. Push Square awarded it the 2025 open-world Game of the Year platinum, while a reader poll placed it second with 29% of 1,223 votes. Pick it over Elden Ring when you want history and role-playing simulation rather than monsters and build-driven combat.
7. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach — only if delivery is your preferred verb
Death Stranding 2 is technically an open-world action-adventure, but its central activity is connecting routes, carrying cargo and building infrastructure across Australia. Combat and stealth are present, including firearms and decoy holograms, yet the pace is deliberate and the asynchronous strand features matter as much as direct fighting.
It launched on PS5 and PC on 26 June 2025, with an OpenCritic score of 90. Sony lists a 91.61 GB launch install on PS5 and says newcomers receive a story summary; prior knowledge is helpful but not required. A March 2026 update added a To The Wilder extreme difficulty. Choose it for Kojima’s unusual traversal systems, not as a conventional crime, superhero or sword-action sandbox.
8. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth — party combat in authored open regions
Rebirth combines real-time combat, character switching and party-building with large, authored regions rather than a freeform sandbox. It is the second entry in the remake project, but Sony describes it as approachable for first-time players. The emphasis is cinematic storytelling, optional activities and party synergy, not ignoring every quest marker.

OpenCritic lists 91, and the PlayStation listing gives a standard price of $69.99 (listed 2026). Buy it when you want a long Japanese role-playing adventure with action controls and a strong plot; choose Elden Ring or Kingdom Come instead if unscripted exploration is the priority.
9. Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition — dense urban action for adults
Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition is the strongest city-action alternative to Spider-Man’s cleaner hero fantasy. Night City supports shooting, melee, hacking, stealth and vehicle travel, with a mature tone and high-impact content. A Japanese Amazon listing cited by Inside Games showed ¥7,200 on 25 October 2026; regional street pricing is volatile.
10. Grand Theft Auto V — buy now for an established crime sandbox
The PS5 version of GTA V combines Franklin, Michael and Trevor’s Story Mode with GTA Online. It adds up to 4K output, up to 60 frames per second, HDR, ray tracing, DualSense effects, Tempest 3D Audio and faster SSD loading. Online supports up to 30 players and requires PlayStation Plus.
Use GTA V when you want to play with friends immediately. Its content descriptors include blood and gore, intense violence, mature humor, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content and drug and alcohol use, making it one of the least suitable choices for younger players.

What is coming with Grand Theft Auto VI?
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, set in Vice City and the wider state of Leonida with Jason and Lucia. Rockstar says it “plays best on PlayStation 5.” Do not treat it as a scored alternative yet: there are no launch reviews or verified performance results in this guide.
Japanese listings give a standard price of ¥9,800 and an Ultimate Edition price of ¥12,280. An Amazon.jp code-in-box listing was observed at ¥8,413 on 15 October 2026, with delivery listed for 12 November and play starting on 19 November. Those are Japanese retailer figures, not confirmed US prices. If you need a game this weekend, buy an available title rather than making a preorder your only option.
How should difficulty and guidance affect my choice?
Difficulty is the biggest divide in this category. Elden Ring has no standard easy mode and expects experimentation, retreat and self-directed learning. Ghost of Yōtei lists Adjustable Difficulty (Advanced) and a practice mode. Spider-Man 2 and Horizon provide broader accessibility and more forgiving combat feedback.

Which game has the traversal style I want?

Which of these PS5 games also run on PS4?
Cross-generation availability matters if a household still uses a PS4. Elden Ring, Horizon Forbidden West and Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut list PS4 and PS5 versions. Does PS5 Pro or DualSense change the recommendation?
No game here requires a PS5 Pro, but several have enhanced modes. Official pages flag Ghost of Yōtei, Horizon Forbidden West, Spider-Man 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Death Stranding 2 as PS5 Pro Enhanced. Yōtei specifically calls out PSSR and advanced ray tracing.
DualSense features are more than a badge when they match the game’s verbs. Spider-Man 2 uses adaptive triggers for swinging and haptics for symbiote and bio-electric powers; Yōtei maps trigger resistance to the bow and grappling hook and haptics to katana combat. Which edition should I buy?
Starting from zero usually favors a complete edition because the expansions add substantial areas or systems. The exception is when you already own the base game.
- Elden Ring: choose a Shadow of the Erdtree Edition, or add the $39.99 expansion to the base game. The Tarnished Pack is listed at $4.99.
- Ghost of Yōtei: the Complete Edition includes Echoes of Sekigahara, Most Wanted and cosmetics. The Complete Edition Upgrade is $14.99. Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted became available through patch version 2.0 or later on 1 October 2026; a limited-time Sakai Armour early unlock ended 30 September 2026.
- Horizon Forbidden West: the Complete Edition includes Burning Shores and bonus digital items. Burning Shores is the PS5 expansion.
- Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut includes Iki Island and Legends, plus the listed art book and commentary.

Ghost of Yōtei’s Legends mode supports two to four players and requires PlayStation Plus; Spider-Man 2 has no multiplayer mode.
Death Stranding 2’s asynchronous strand features do not require PlayStation Plus.
