Start with PS5 Headphone 3D Audio enabled, create a personalized 3D Audio Profile, and use the Standard EQ preset. Standard is the safest baseline because it balances low and high frequencies. Switch to Shooter when you want the console’s documented emphasis on footsteps and shooting sounds, choose Bass Boost for fuller low end, or build a custom mode after comparing the same game scene. These are starting points rather than a universal winning curve: Sony does not publish one EQ or 3D profile that suits every listener, game, or Pulse headset generation.

The setup takes place in the PS5 Sound menus and Control Center. Connect the headset, confirm it is the output device, configure 3D audio, audition EQ presets, then adjust volume, sidetone, and the PULSE 3D CHAT/GAME balance to taste.

What are the best PS5 settings for PULSE headphones?

For most players, use this order: select the connected Pulse headset under Settings > Sound > Audio Output; enable headphone 3D audio and create a personalized profile under Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones); choose Standard in Control Center > Sound > EQ Presets; and set a comfortable listening level. Test Shooter if locating footsteps and gunfire matters more than a neutral presentation, or compare Bass Boost when music, explosions, and other low-frequency effects feel too thin.

The right choice depends on the listener, the game, and whether the game supports 3D audio. Sony’s controls describe what each preset prioritizes, but the official material does not provide controlled measurements or a single “best” setting. Treat the settings below as a repeatable way to find your own preference.

How do I connect and select the Pulse headset on PS5?

Do the output-device check before changing EQ or 3D audio. If the console is sending sound elsewhere, later adjustments can appear to have no effect.

  1. Connect the headset using its supported connection and turn it on.
  2. Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
  3. Under the output-device controls, select the connected headset.
  4. Review Output to Headphones and Audio Format (Priority). The choices shown can vary with the connected device and the console’s configuration, so use the options that the PS5 presents for your headset rather than assuming another model’s menu will match.
  5. Play a familiar game or system sound briefly to confirm that audio is coming through the ear cups.

This check also gives you a known starting point for comparing presets. Keep the game, scene, and approximate volume the same when you audition different modes; otherwise, a louder option can seem better simply because it is louder.

How do I enable personalized 3D audio for headphones?

Use the PS5’s built-in listening test instead of guessing at a profile. The console offers a personalized profile and five preset profiles.

  1. Open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones).
  2. Choose Create Personalized 3D Audio Profile.
  3. Follow each listening prompt while wearing the Pulse headset in your normal position. Listen carefully and make the selection that sounds most natural to you.
  4. When the profile is complete, turn on Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile if it improves clarity or positional cues for you.
  5. If the personalized result sounds unnatural, return to the same menu and compare it with the five available preset profiles.

Personalization is listener-specific. A profile made for one person should not be treated as a reference curve for another, and changing ear-pad position or wearing the headset differently can change the result of the listening test.

Which PS5 EQ preset should I use?

The three named presets represent different priorities, not quality levels. Pick the one that serves the type of sound you are trying to hear.

Preset What PlayStation says it emphasizes Good starting point when you want Trade-off to check
Standard Balances low and high frequencies. A general-purpose baseline for games, menus, voices, and music. It may feel less dramatic than the bass-focused option or less forward for footsteps than Shooter.
Bass Boost Emphasizes bass. More weight from explosions, engines, music, and other low-frequency effects. Check that added low end does not make voices or quieter details harder for you to hear.
Shooter Emphasizes shooting sounds and footsteps. Competitive games in which those cues are important. Its emphasis is a style choice, not a guarantee of better performance in every game or for every listener.

To audition them, press the PS button to open the Control Center, select Sound, and open EQ Presets. Select a preset, listen to the same passage, and switch back and forth rather than relying on memory. The PS5 also provides previews and adjustable sliders for custom audio modes, so you can keep the Standard balance while making a smaller personal change.

How should I create a custom Pulse EQ?

Use a custom mode only after you have compared the named presets. A custom curve is useful when Standard is close but one part of the range needs a modest adjustment.

  1. Press the PS button and choose Sound > EQ Presets.
  2. Select the option for a custom audio mode.
  3. Move one slider at a time and use the preview supplied by the console.
  4. Test the result in the same game scene used for the preset comparison.
  5. Save the mode only when the change solves a specific problem, such as insufficient low-end weight or a lack of presence in the sounds you need to follow.

Avoid changing every slider at once. If several bands move together, you lose a clear explanation for why the result changed and make it harder to return to a useful baseline. Keep Standard available as your control setting.

What volume and sidetone settings work best?

Set the headphone volume high enough to hear quiet dialogue and environmental cues, but low enough to remain comfortable during a long session. The correct level is personal; there is no official universal number in the supplied PlayStation material.

Sidetone controls how loudly your own voice is fed back into the headset. If you speak too loudly or feel isolated from your surroundings, a small sidetone increase can help. If your own voice is distracting, reduce it. PlayStation notes that sidetone is not available for every headset, so the control may not appear even when another connected model offers it.

Make volume comparisons at the same level. Bass Boost and Shooter can sound more exciting when they are simply louder, so match their loudness to Standard before deciding which one is clearer.

How do I use the PULSE 3D CHAT/GAME controls?

The PULSE 3D headset has separate CHAT and GAME balance controls documented in its manual. They let you shift the mix toward voice chat or game sound while you are playing.

  1. Start a game and join the voice chat you normally use.
  2. Use the CHAT/GAME controls to move the mix toward the sound that is currently being lost.
  3. Return the controls toward the middle when the conversation ends, then check whether game cues are at a comfortable level.

The PULSE 3D manual cautions that some games’ chat features may not work with the headset’s CHAT/GAME function. If moving the controls has no effect in a particular title, check that game’s own voice-chat settings and use the PS5’s system controls instead of assuming the headset is defective.

The manual also documents microphone monitoring, which lets you hear your own microphone signal. Treat microphone monitoring and sidetone as separate controls: one is a headset feature described by the PULSE 3D manual, while sidetone is a PS5 control that may not be offered for every connected headset.

Does PULSE 3D support PS5 3D audio in every game?

No. The headset supports PS5 3D audio when the game itself supports 3D audio. As the Sony Interactive Entertainment PULSE 3D instruction manual states: “This headset supports 3D audio on PS5 consoles if the game supports 3D audio.”

That means enabling the console feature cannot add positional audio to a title that does not implement it. In a compatible game, compare the personalized profile and the presets using a repeatable scene; in a title without 3D-audio support, judge the headset by its regular stereo presentation and the game’s own audio controls.

What should I check when 3D audio or EQ seems to do nothing?

Work through the signal path in order. Most apparent setting failures are selection, compatibility, or game-support issues.

  • No sound from the headset: Return to Settings > Sound > Audio Output and confirm that the headset is selected. Recheck Output to Headphones and the connection itself.
  • EQ changes are inaudible: Open the Control Center with the PS button, choose Sound > EQ Presets, and verify that you changed the active mode. Compare the same audio passage at matched volume.
  • 3D audio sounds unnatural: Re-run Create Personalized 3D Audio Profile while wearing the headset normally, then compare the result with one of the five presets.
  • Footsteps are not clearer: Shooter emphasizes shooting and footsteps, but it is not a promise that every game will expose those sounds clearly. Confirm that the game supports 3D audio and test the preset in a scene where those cues are present.
  • Chat is too quiet: Adjust the PULSE 3D CHAT/GAME balance, then check the game’s chat mix. Some games do not support the headset’s CHAT/GAME function.
  • Your voice is distracting: Reduce sidetone if that control is available, and separately check the PULSE 3D microphone-monitoring control.

Menu names and availability can change with PS5 system software. If an item is missing, use the closest current label shown on your console and verify that the headset is connected before concluding that the feature is unavailable.

Are other Pulse generations or third-party headsets handled the same way?

The documented EQ guide explicitly includes PULSE 3D among the headset families for which PS5 EQ can be adjusted, while the PULSE 3D manual confirms support for PS5 3D audio in compatible games. Other models may expose different controls or connection requirements.

PlayStation’s historical FAQ says compatible USB or analog stereo headsets can deliver 3D audio, while Bluetooth-only wireless headsets are unsupported. That older guidance is useful context, but compatibility can depend on the specific model and connection. Confirm the current model’s PS5 support with its manufacturer before buying or troubleshooting it.

Do not assume that a control shown for PULSE 3D will appear for another headset. Output-device choices, sidetone availability, microphone controls, and chat mixing can vary by device and configuration.

How can I choose settings for competitive games versus story games?

Competitive shooters

Start with the personalized 3D profile and audition Shooter. Keep the profile that makes directional movement and shooting cues easiest for you to follow without making voices or other important sounds uncomfortable.

Action and adventure games

Start with Standard and the personalized profile. Try Bass Boost if the game’s music and large effects feel too light, but return to Standard if added low end masks dialogue or environmental detail.

Dialogue-heavy or mixed-use listening

Standard is the sensible first comparison because it balances low and high frequencies. Adjust sidetone and volume separately so a microphone or chat preference does not lead you to change the game EQ unnecessarily.

These are listening strategies, not measured performance claims. The official PlayStation descriptions identify each preset’s emphasis; they do not establish a numerical advantage in reaction time, accuracy, or immersion.

What is the fastest setup checklist?

Use this checklist whenever you connect the headset to a different PS5 user profile or want to restore a known baseline.

  1. Connect and power on the Pulse headset.
  2. Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select it as the output device.
  3. Review Output to Headphones and Audio Format (Priority) as presented for that configuration.
  4. Open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones).
  5. Create or select a 3D Audio Profile and enable Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile when it sounds right.
  6. Press the PS button and choose Sound > EQ Presets.
  7. Start with Standard; compare Shooter or Bass Boost for the specific game.
  8. Set comfortable volume, then adjust sidetone if the control is available.
  9. Use the PULSE 3D CHAT/GAME controls only after confirming that the game supports that function.

Keep a short familiar audio scene as your reference. It makes future changes deliberate rather than dependent on memory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to create a separate 3D profile for every game?

The PS5 profile is created in the console’s headphone 3D-audio settings, not inside an individual game. You can leave it enabled and compare it with the presets when a particular title sounds unusual; the important variable is whether that game supports 3D audio.

Why does the Shooter preset sound worse for music and menus?

Shooter is designed to emphasize shooting sounds and footsteps, so it is not intended as a universal music or media mode. Use Standard for mixed listening, then switch presets from the Control Center when your activity changes.

Can I use PULSE 3D chat mixing if a game has no voice chat?

There is no chat signal to rebalance when a game is not using voice chat. The PULSE 3D manual also warns that some games’ chat features may not work with its CHAT/GAME function, so the control may have no effect in those cases.

What should I do if another person uses my headset?

Have that listener run the personalized 3D-audio prompts while wearing the headset normally, or use one of the PS5’s five preset profiles. A profile that sounds natural to one listener is not a reliable fit for another.
