There is no defensible, independently tested “top five” ranking from the available evidence. Portable monitors differ sharply in HDMI inputs, supported PS5 modes, power requirements, audio, and travel design. The safest way to buy is to match a monitor’s documented PS5 resolution and refresh-rate modes—not simply its advertised panel maximum. Sony confirms that PS5 supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K 120Hz output, but that capability does not make every portable monitor a 4K/120Hz display.
This guide compares five practical monitor profiles, explains the checks that prevent a black screen or missing 120Hz mode, and uses the NexiGo NG17FG as a documented compatibility example. It does not present that example as a best-in-class winner; the manufacturer information establishes HDMI console compatibility and a separate power requirement, but not a complete independent ranking.

Not from the evidence available here. A reliable ranking would require the exact model numbers, current availability, PS5 mode verification, comparable measurements, prices for the target market, and hands-on testing for every candidate. Those details are not established for five current products, so naming five “best” models would create false certainty.
You can still make a good purchase by comparing five use-case profiles. Treat each profile below as a specification target, then verify the exact monitor’s manual and current listing before ordering. A monitor’s headline refresh rate or USB-C connector is not proof that it will accept the PS5 signal you want.

What does the PS5 actually support?
Sony states that the PS5 console supports the HDMI 2.1 specification and 4K 120Hz video output. That is the console’s capability, not a promise that a portable display can receive or show 4K at 120Hz.
Console output is negotiated with the display
The PS5 and monitor negotiate a mode through HDMI. If the monitor lacks the required resolution, refresh rate, bandwidth, or compatibility implementation, the console may fall back to a lower mode. A monitor advertised as 144Hz, for example, may still accept only 60Hz or 120Hz from a PS5, depending on its input and firmware.
Check the exact model’s supported modes
ASUS publishes a model-specific 1080p 120Hz compatibility list, illustrating why a generic “120Hz monitor” claim is insufficient. Look for a manufacturer table or manual that identifies the input, resolution, and refresh rate together. If the documentation does not mention PS5 or the desired mode, regard compatibility as unconfirmed rather than assumed.
What should you compare before buying?
Use the following checks in order. They eliminate the most common failures before you compare cosmetic features.
Rank #2
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
1. PS5-verified resolution and refresh rate
Choose the mode you actually want—such as 4K/120Hz, 1440p-class output, or 1080p/120Hz—and confirm that the exact display accepts it over HDMI. Panel resolution alone does not establish console compatibility. A portable monitor can have a high-refresh panel while its HDMI input is limited to a lower refresh rate.
2. HDMI input type
Some portable monitors use full-size HDMI; others use mini-HDMI. If the monitor has mini-HDMI, use the appropriate HDMI-to-mini-HDMI cable or adapter. UPERFECT’s connection guidance describes this HDMI-to-mini-HDMI path for console use. Confirm whether the required cable is included, because a USB-C cable supplied for charging or laptop video may not solve an HDMI connection.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Plan the monitor’s power separately from the video cable. NexiGo’s NG17FG FAQ explicitly says that HDMI connections do not supply power and instructs users to connect HDMI for video and USB-C separately for power. Other models may accept USB-C power, a wall adapter, or a battery pack, but the acceptable voltage, wattage, and cable arrangement are model-specific.
4. VRR and HDR
Variable refresh rate and high dynamic range can improve motion and contrast, but list them only when the monitor manufacturer documents support on the relevant input. Distinguish “HDR-capable” or “VRR-capable” panel claims from a verified PS5 operating mode. A feature may work over DisplayPort on a computer while being unavailable through the monitor’s HDMI input.

5. Size, weight, brightness, and viewing angle
For travel, weight and folded thickness can matter more than a small resolution increase. Brightness affects whether the screen remains usable in a bright room, while viewing angle matters when the monitor sits on a low hotel desk or beside a console. Compare manufacturer specifications for the exact revision; the available evidence does not establish a common size, weight, or brightness figure across five products.
6. Audio and physical stability
Check for built-in speakers, a headphone output, and a stable stand or cover. A monitor can display the game correctly yet be inconvenient if it has no practical audio path or its cover slips when the console is placed on a narrow surface. Confirm how the monitor selects HDMI audio and whether its stand supports the angle you need.

Which five portable-monitor profiles fit PS5 best?
These are five buying profiles rather than a ranked list of named products. They let you compare displays without pretending that unverified models have identical PS5 performance.
| Profile | Best for | Verify before purchase | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4K/120Hz performance | Players who want the highest documented PS5 output | Exact HDMI input supports 4K at 120Hz with PS5; suitable high-speed cable; adequate power | Usually demands more power, cost, and bulk; many portable panels do not support this mode |
| 1440p-class balance | Players prioritizing sharpness and a lighter travel setup | Whether the PS5 recognizes the monitor’s specific resolution and refresh rate over HDMI | Panel specifications may exceed the console mode the HDMI input actually accepts |
| 1080p/120Hz compact | Competitive players and small-space travel | Model-specific 1080p 120Hz compatibility, HDMI bandwidth, and cable type | Lower pixel density than 1440p or 4K |
| VRR/HDR-focused | Players who value smoother motion or stronger contrast | VRR and HDR support on the HDMI input used by PS5, not just on another input | Feature labels can be broader than the modes the console can use |
| Travel-first, low-power | Hotel rooms, tournaments, and frequent transport | Power source, USB-C requirements, stand stability, brightness, and included HDMI accessories | May sacrifice resolution, HDR, speakers, or peak refresh rate for portability |
How to use the profiles
Start with your travel constraint, then set a minimum PS5 mode. If you carry the monitor in a backpack, a travel-first or compact 1080p/120Hz profile may be more useful than a heavier panel with an unusable headline specification. If the monitor will stay near a console, prioritize the documented HDMI mode, VRR/HDR behavior, and audio over folded thickness.

What does the NexiGo NG17FG example prove?
The NG17FG is a useful example of the checks every listing should answer. NexiGo says the display works with consoles that have HDMI output and states that “HDMI connections do not supply power.” Its setup therefore uses HDMI for the picture and a separate USB-C connection for power.
Those statements establish a connection path, not a ranking, price advantage, or proof of 4K/120Hz, VRR, HDR, brightness, or speaker performance. Before buying this or any other model, confirm the exact resolution and refresh-rate modes, the HDMI connector, the supplied cable, the required power source, and the return policy in the current product documentation.

Use this sequence to avoid troubleshooting a cable or power mistake as if it were a compatibility problem.
- Read the monitor manual first. Identify the HDMI input, power input, supported resolutions and refresh rates, and any requirement to use a specific USB-C port.
- Prepare the correct video cable. Use a standard HDMI cable for a full-size HDMI input. For mini-HDMI, use an HDMI-to-mini-HDMI cable or the manufacturer-approved adapter. Do not assume a USB-C-shaped port accepts PS5 video.
- Connect video directly. Sony’s 4K/120Hz troubleshooting guidance recommends connecting the PS5 directly to the display rather than routing it through an intermediary that may limit the signal.
- Provide separate monitor power. Connect the monitor to the documented USB-C charger, wall adapter, or other suitable source. HDMI alone should not be expected to power a portable display.
- Turn on the monitor and select the HDMI input. If it has more than one input, choose the one physically connected to the PS5.
- Check PS5 video settings. On the console, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Review the current resolution, 120 Hz Output setting, HDR setting, and VRR setting where available. Choose automatic detection first, then test a specific mode only if the monitor’s documentation lists it.
- Confirm the negotiated signal. Use the monitor’s information screen, if provided, and the PS5 video-output information to verify the actual resolution and refresh rate. Do not rely on the monitor’s maximum panel figure.
How do you fix common PS5 portable-monitor problems?
No picture or “no signal”
- Confirm the monitor has its own power and is set to the correct HDMI input.
- Reseat both HDMI ends. If the monitor uses mini-HDMI, check that the plug is fully inserted and the cable matches the port.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the monitor and remove switches, capture devices, or receivers while testing.
- Try another known-good HDMI cable and restart both the console and display.
- If the screen remains blank, check whether the monitor lists the PS5’s current resolution as supported. A panel’s advertised resolution does not guarantee HDMI compatibility.
120Hz is missing
- Verify that the exact monitor model documents 120Hz at the resolution you selected.
- Use a suitable high-speed HDMI cable, as Sony recommends for 4K/120Hz troubleshooting.
- In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, review the 120 Hz Output option and test automatic settings.
- Check whether the monitor exposes 120Hz only at a lower resolution. If so, the panel’s peak refresh rate is not available in the mode you wanted.
The image flickers or drops out
- Use the monitor’s specified power source; an underpowered USB connection can cause instability.
- Test with VRR and HDR disabled, then re-enable each feature separately. This identifies whether the problem is a feature-mode negotiation rather than the basic HDMI link.
- Keep the HDMI cable short and firmly connected, and avoid adapters that are not rated for the target signal.
There is no sound
- Check whether the monitor has built-in speakers and whether its volume is muted.
- Look for a headphone output if you want wired audio from the display.
- In the PS5 sound settings, confirm that the output device is appropriate for the connection you are using. A video connection can work even when the monitor offers no usable speaker or headphone path.
Which accessories are actually necessary?
Buy accessories only after checking the selected monitor’s ports and documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a portable monitor with a 144Hz or 165Hz panel run the PS5 at that speed?
Not necessarily. The PS5’s documented output support and the monitor’s HDMI implementation determine the negotiated mode; a higher panel rating may apply only to another input or a computer. Confirm the exact PS5 resolution/refresh combination in the monitor’s manual.
Will a USB-C cable from the PS5 carry video to any portable monitor?
No. A USB-C-shaped connector does not prove that the monitor accepts USB-C video from a PS5. Use the display’s documented HDMI path unless its manufacturer explicitly documents another PS5-compatible connection.
Can I power the monitor from a power bank while gaming?
Only if the monitor’s documentation permits that power source and the bank can deliver the required voltage and wattage continuously. HDMI does not provide monitor power, so an unsuitable bank can cause shutdowns or flicker.
Is HDR worth prioritizing on a small PS5 monitor?
It depends on the room and the display’s actual HDR implementation. Verify HDR support on the HDMI input and consider brightness and contrast specifications; an “HDR” label by itself does not establish the quality or PS5 mode you will receive.
