There is no universal “best” preset for a 3D metroidvania. The smoothest result comes from a repeatable process: verify the game’s requirements, establish a frame-rate target your PC can sustain, then change one setting at a time—starting with render resolution or scaling, followed by the most expensive visual options, synchronization, and background load. Judge every change by both frame consistency and image quality.
Published minimum and recommended specifications are only a baseline. Steam Support notes that two PCs running at the same resolution can perform differently, and meeting a game’s requirements does not guarantee high FPS. Use the steps below for any title, then apply the game-specific Silksong notes where relevant.

Prioritize stable frame delivery over maximum detail. A slightly softer image that remains consistent during exploration, combat and camera movement usually feels better than a sharper image that repeatedly stutters. The practical order is:
- Check the exact game listing against your CPU, GPU, memory, operating system and storage.
- Reduce render resolution or resolution scaling if frame delivery is poor.
- Lower expensive visual options selectively, especially anti-aliasing quality when its cost is visible in your frame rate.
- Match synchronization and frame limits to your display’s refresh behavior.
- Close unnecessary background applications and update graphics drivers when performance is unexpectedly low.
Do not apply every reduction at once. Change one option, replay the same demanding area, and keep the setting only if the gain in consistency is worth the image-quality loss.

How do I check whether my PC is suitable for a specific game?
Open the game’s store listing and compare its published minimum and recommended specifications with your own hardware. Treat those figures as starting points, not as promises of a particular frame rate.
Check the complete requirement set
- Processor: compare the listed CPU family and model with yours.
- Graphics: compare the listed GPU class and available graphics memory where the game specifies it.
- System memory: check installed RAM against both requirement tiers.
- Operating system: use the requirement for your actual Windows, macOS or SteamOS/Linux installation rather than assuming another platform behaves the same way.
- Storage: confirm that the game’s required drive space is available.
Steam Support explains that hardware configuration, available memory, unnecessary background applications and outdated drivers can all affect results. A PC that technically meets a requirement can still deliver inconsistent performance because the requirement does not describe every scene, driver version or background workload.

The Steam listing for Hollow Knight: Silksong publishes these Windows specifications:
| Tier | Operating system | CPU | Memory | Graphics |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 64-bit Windows 10 | Intel Core i3-3240 or AMD FX-4300 | 4 GB RAM | GeForce GTX 560 Ti or Radeon HD 7750 |
| Recommended | Not separately stated in the listed row | Intel Core i5-3470 | 8 GB RAM | GeForce GTX 1050 or Radeon R9 380 |
These are the publisher’s listed specifications, not measured FPS results and not a proxy for every other metroidvania. The same Steam listing also provides separate macOS and SteamOS/Linux requirements, so check the platform-specific entry before assuming the Windows figures apply.
Which setting should I change first when the game is slow?
Start with render resolution or resolution scaling. Raising resolution and other video options increases the work done by the GPU, while lowering them can improve frame delivery with a predictable effect on image sharpness.
Use a controlled resolution test
- Record the current resolution, scaling mode and synchronization settings.
- Lower the in-game render resolution or scaling by one available step.
- Replay a repeatable demanding section, such as a crowded room, effects-heavy fight or fast camera pan.
- Look for fewer drops and steadier motion, not just a higher peak number.
- Keep the change only if the improvement is noticeable; otherwise restore it and test another option.
If the game offers an upscaler or dynamic resolution, test it in small increments. Nixxes describes upscaling and dynamic resolution as game-dependent features, so names, controls and image quality differ by title. Compare fine details, moving edges and text as well as performance; an aggressive scale can make a scene look soft even when it is faster.

Resolution versus image clarity
| Choice | Likely benefit | Trade-off to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Native or higher render resolution | Sharper geometry, textures and interface elements | Greater GPU workload and potentially lower FPS |
| Moderately reduced resolution or scaling | More GPU headroom for stable frame delivery | Softer edges and fine detail |
| Dynamic resolution, when supported | Can reduce resolution during demanding moments | Image sharpness may change while you play; behavior is title-specific |
| Upscaling, when supported | Renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the image | Results and available quality modes differ by game |
Which visual options are worth lowering after resolution?
Lower options selectively rather than choosing a universal “low” preset. The performance cost depends on the engine, scene and hardware, so test the setting that changes the problem you can actually observe.
Anti-aliasing
Anti-aliasing smooths jagged edges. AMD’s graphics-settings guidance notes that higher sampling quality can cost performance. If a game offers several anti-aliasing levels, step down one level at a time and inspect thin geometry, foliage and character outlines. Disable or reduce it only when the smoother edges are not worth the frame-time cost; a lower setting can preserve more performance while retaining acceptable clarity.
Other expensive options
Games expose different combinations of shadows, effects, ambient occlusion, reflections, view distance and texture controls. Because the supplied guidance does not establish one setting as universally most expensive, use this test:
- Choose one option that visibly changes the scene or is identified by the game as performance-heavy.
- Lower only that option one step.
- Repeat the same camera movement or encounter.
- Compare frame consistency and the specific visual change.
Texture quality may have little effect on rendering speed on one GPU and a larger effect on another, while effects or shadows may matter more in a particular scene. Keep textures and geometry detail higher when they do not cause instability, and spend your compromises where the game shows a measurable benefit.

Use the image-quality test, not the menu label
“High” and “ultra” are not standardized across games. A setting that looks minor in a menu can affect combat readability, while another can consume resources without being noticeable during normal play. Take screenshots or pause in the same location after each change so that your decision is based on a consistent comparison.
How should I configure V-Sync, refresh rate and frame limits?
Refresh rate determines how often the display can present a new image; V-Sync coordinates frame delivery with that refresh cycle and can prevent tearing. The correct combination depends on the game, monitor and graphics-driver behavior, so test the game’s own controls before applying driver overrides.

- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadows for added depth.
Set the display and game in a logical order
- Confirm the monitor is running at its intended refresh rate in the operating system’s display settings.
- Open the game’s graphics or display menu and test its V-Sync options.
- Run the same movement or encounter with V-Sync enabled, then disabled, noting tearing, latency and consistency.
- If the game offers a frame limit, choose a limit your system can sustain consistently rather than chasing an unstable peak.
- Only then investigate a graphics-driver override if the game setting does not resolve the issue.
Nixxes’ PC performance guidance distinguishes refresh rate from V-Sync and notes that support and behavior vary by title. V-Sync can remove visible tearing, but it may alter latency or how frames are paced. A high-refresh display does not make the PC render more frames; it only provides more opportunities to present frames that the game has already produced.
When synchronization appears to make performance worse
Toggle one control at a time and watch for abrupt pacing changes. If V-Sync introduces noticeable delay or a recurring cadence, compare the game’s alternate modes, any built-in frame limiter and the operating system’s selected refresh rate. Do not assume a driver-level setting is better than the game’s implementation.

How can I reduce stutter caused by software rather than graphics quality?
Close unnecessary background applications, check available memory and install current graphics drivers. Steam Support lists all three as general performance considerations, along with the broader effect of your hardware configuration.
Before launching the game
- Save work and close browsers, recording tools and overlays you do not need.
- Pause downloads, cloud synchronization and other tasks that compete for memory or system resources.
- Install the latest driver offered for your GPU, then restart if the installer requests it.
- Use the same display mode and refresh-rate selection each time you test so that comparisons remain valid.
If performance changed immediately after a driver or operating-system update, retest with the same in-game settings before making further reductions. A software change can alter results even when the hardware and resolution are unchanged.
What is a repeatable tuning method for a new metroidvania?
Use a written baseline and a fixed test route. This prevents a temporary improvement in one room from being mistaken for a better overall configuration.
Five-pass tuning workflow
- Baseline: record resolution, scaling, anti-aliasing, major quality options, V-Sync, frame limit and display refresh rate. Play for several minutes in exploration and combat.
- Requirements check: compare your CPU, GPU, RAM, operating system and storage with the game’s store listing. Note whether you are below minimum, between minimum and recommended, or above recommended.
- GPU-load pass: test one resolution or scaling step. If frame delivery improves clearly, decide whether the loss of sharpness is acceptable.
- Visual-options pass: test anti-aliasing and other costly options individually. Keep only changes that improve consistency without damaging readability.
- Presentation pass: test V-Sync, frame limiting and refresh-rate choices, then retest the most demanding scene.
After each pass, keep a short note: setting changed, scene tested, visual difference and whether motion felt steadier. If a change does nothing, restore it and move on; the absence of improvement is useful information about where your bottleneck is not.

Choose a profile based on your priority
| Priority | Starting approach | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Most stable motion | Reduce scaling or resolution first, then trim expensive effects and use synchronization that removes tearing | Whether the image becomes too soft or frame pacing feels delayed |

| Balanced presentation | Use a moderate scaling change, mid-level anti-aliasing and selectively reduced effects | Consistency across both quiet exploration and demanding scenes |
How do I troubleshoot a problem that appears only in one game?
First confirm that the issue is reproducible with the same scene and settings. Then check the game’s support documentation, because a title can have an option-specific bug that generic tuning will not fix.
Silksong Fast V-Sync cutscene issue
Team Cherry’s official Hollow Knight: Silksong support page warns that NVIDIA Control Panel’s Fast V-Sync option may cause cutscene problems. Its suggested alternatives are Vertical sync On, Off or Adaptive. This is a Silksong-specific troubleshooting case, not a general rule for every metroidvania or every NVIDIA driver profile.
- Open NVIDIA Control Panel and locate the profile for Silksong.
- Replace Fast V-Sync with Vertical sync On, Off or Adaptive.
- Launch the game and replay the affected cutscene.
- Keep the mode that removes the problem without introducing unacceptable tearing or pacing issues.
If the problem is limited to cutscenes while gameplay is smooth, avoid lowering every graphics option before testing this targeted change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should I buy a variable-refresh-rate monitor for smoother gameplay?
A variable-refresh-rate display can help the monitor follow changing frame delivery, but it cannot raise the FPS your PC renders. Consider one only after you have established the frame rate your system can sustain and confirmed that the monitor, game and graphics driver support the synchronization behavior you want.

What should I do when lowering settings does not help?
If several individual reductions produce no meaningful change, restore the image-quality options and investigate factors outside those controls. Check that the game is using the intended GPU, verify available memory, close background applications, update the driver and compare your configuration with the game’s requirements again.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I copy the same graphics preset from one metroidvania to another?
Not reliably. Different engines, effects pipelines and display options assign different costs to the same menu label, so copy the tuning method rather than the values. Recheck resolution, anti-aliasing and synchronization in each game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes the recommended specification guarantee smooth performance?
No. Store-page requirements describe a baseline configuration, not a measured frame-rate promise. Steam Support notes that systems with the same resolution can behave differently because hardware configuration, memory, drivers and background software vary.
Should I leave V-Sync enabled all the time?
Use the mode that best matches your display and the game’s frame delivery. V-Sync can prevent tearing, but it can also change latency or pacing, so compare the game’s own On, Off or Adaptive choices instead of assuming one universal answer.
Why does a game look blurry after I improve its FPS?
A lower render resolution or aggressive scaling setting is probably reducing the internal image size. Raise scaling one step at a time until fine details and text are readable, then recover performance by testing anti-aliasing or other visual options individually.
Are the Silksong Windows requirements valid for SteamOS or macOS?
Use the separate macOS and SteamOS/Linux entries on the Steam listing. The Windows CPU, memory and GPU figures are platform-specific specifications and should not be treated as interchangeable requirements.
