For most families, start with 1Password Families if private vaults and straightforward shared-vault management matter most, or Bitwarden Families if you want a lower published annual-billing price and up to six accounts. For a small business, Bitwarden Teams is a value-focused starting point; compare 1Password Business or Keeper if your administration, sharing or compliance needs justify a different plan. The right choice depends less on a feature checklist than on who needs access, how you will recover accounts and whether the apps work on every device in your household or workplace.
What should a family or small business expect from a password manager?
A password manager stores credentials in an encrypted vault, helps create and retrieve distinct passwords, and can share selected items without handing everyone the same master password. For a household, the central choice is how to give each person a private space while sharing only the accounts the family uses together. For a business, the same problem becomes an access-control and offboarding question: who owns shared credentials, who can see them, and how quickly can access be removed when someone leaves?

Do not choose on the basis of the words “secure sharing” alone. Check whether the plan gives each user a separate account, how shared vaults or collections work, what happens when an administrator or family organizer cannot sign in, and which security controls are actually included in the plan. An unlimited device allowance is useful only if the apps and browser extensions fit your actual mix of phones and computers.
What to compare before you pay
- Seats and billing: Confirm the number of included users, the cost of adding users, billing frequency and the price shown at renewal. A monthly equivalent on an annual plan is not the same as a month-to-month price.
- Private and shared spaces: Look for individual vaults as well as shared vaults or collections. A family should not need to expose every personal login just to share a household streaming or utility account.
- Recovery and departure: Find out how the account can be recovered and how an organizer or administrator can handle a lost device, a departing employee or a family member who no longer needs access. Test the recovery path before relying on it.
- Authentication: Compare MFA options, passkey behavior and support for hardware security keys. A password manager’s own account needs strong protection, not just the passwords stored inside it.
- Everyday use: Check desktop and mobile apps, browser extensions, autofill, offline behavior and synchronization on the exact operating systems and browsers in use.
- Business administration: If you need centralized ownership, activity records, directory synchronization, SCIM, single sign-on or policy controls, verify that those features are in your chosen plan rather than assuming they come with a business label.
- Leaving the service: Understand how to export your data and make a protected backup before switching. For a company, write down who is responsible for exports, credential rotation and access removal.
Which password manager is best for a family?
1Password Families is the clearest fit when ease of sharing and separate personal vaults are the priorities. Bitwarden Families is the value choice in the current listed plans, while Keeper is worth comparing if a household has many devices and wants broad syncing and sharing.

1Password Families: easiest shared-vault starting point
1Password’s family page, accessed in 2026, lists up to five users, unlimited shared vaults and simple admin controls. Its product page lists apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, along with alerts for weak or compromised credentials. TechRadar’s 2026 review calls it its best password manager for families and reports that members have private vaults as well as shared vaults.
That combination is useful when adults need private accounts but also want a common place for household logins, recovery information or other credentials they have decided to share. The five-person ceiling is a real plan constraint: larger households should compare the six-person options below and verify the current terms before subscribing. TechRadar’s comparison says 1Password has no free tier, so it is less suitable if the household needs to begin at no cost.

Reviewed’s May 2026 comparison listed $6.95 per month for up to five users; treat that as a dated comparison snapshot, not a guaranteed checkout or renewal price.
Bitwarden Families: strongest published value for six accounts
Bitwarden lists Families at $3.99 per month billed annually for up to six users on its pricing page accessed in 2026. That is an annual-billing rate, so the total before any applicable taxes or promotions is $47.88 for a year. The plan is a practical fit for households that want multiple accounts and shared collections without paying for a larger enterprise-style administration package.
Bitwarden’s free tier is also unusually useful for a household that is still deciding whether to move its passwords: TechRadar describes it as supporting unlimited password storage and unlimited devices, with free sharing with one other user and passkey support. That is not a substitute for the paid Families plan if the household needs its six-user arrangement, but it gives an individual or two-person household a low-friction way to assess the service. TechRadar also notes self-hosting options; that is a choice for people prepared to manage the hosting themselves, not a requirement for ordinary use.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Bitwarden’s open-source design is part of its appeal to readers who value inspectable software. It does not, by itself, establish that a particular household has configured recovery, sharing or MFA correctly; those decisions still need attention.
Keeper: compare it when device coverage and sharing dominate
TechRadar’s 2026 review describes Keeper as supporting unlimited password storage, syncing and sharing across devices, and notes its popularity with businesses. Its comparison reports unlimited devices for Keeper’s family plan. That makes it a candidate for households with a broad device mix or extensive sharing needs.
Do check what is included rather than treating every security add-on as standard. The review says some breach notifications and encrypted storage are optional paid extras. Reviewed listed Keeper Family at $6.25 per month for up to five people in its May 2026 comparison; confirm the current plan details and checkout total because both feature packaging and prices can change.
Which password manager is best for a small business?
Bitwarden Teams is a sensible value baseline for a small company that wants centralized ownership and practical user management. Consider 1Password Business or Keeper when their administration, user experience or sharing model better matches your operations, but verify current plan terms and required controls before buying.
Bitwarden Teams: useful administration at a stated annual rate
Bitwarden lists Teams at $4 per user per month billed annually on its 2026 pricing page. Its listed features include centralized ownership and management, secure credential sharing, event logs, directory synchronization and SCIM. Those capabilities address more than password storage: they can help an organization manage access as staff and directories change.

Budget on the basis of the annual commitment and the number of users who need accounts. The published figure is a per-user monthly equivalent on annual billing; taxes or promotions can alter the total. A small company should also verify any needed single sign-on, policy controls, recovery process and data-residency requirements directly against the current plan and its own obligations. The listed Teams features do not establish that every compliance requirement is satisfied.
When should a business consider 1Password Business?
Choose a 1Password business plan for evaluation when ease of use, clear separation of private and shared information, or administrative experience is a deciding factor. The available facts here do not establish current Business pricing, or a definitive list of Business-plan SSO, SCIM and employee-family benefits. Confirm those specific items on the current plan page before making a procurement decision; do not infer them from the Families plan.
When is Keeper worth comparing for a company?
Keeper merits a closer look when secure sharing across a wide device mix is central to the workflow. TechRadar reports broad syncing and sharing and says the product is popular with businesses, but a company still needs to check the exact administrative controls, add-on costs and contractual requirements for its chosen business plan. A review’s general description is not a substitute for confirming that a specific edition meets your organization’s needs.
How do the main family and business options compare?
The table separates current plan information from dated review snapshots. Prices and included features can change; the source and date are kept with each figure so you can distinguish a published billing rate from an older comparison.

How can a family share passwords safely?
Share only the credentials that other people genuinely need, keep private accounts in private vaults, and protect the manager account with a unique master password and MFA. A well-organized shared vault is safer and easier to maintain than sending passwords in messages or giving every family member access to one account.

- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
- Set up individual accounts. Each person should use their own account or seat where the plan supports it, rather than sharing one master login. Create a unique, high-entropy master password that is not reused elsewhere.
- Turn on MFA. Prefer an authenticator app or a hardware security key where available. Keep recovery information somewhere protected and accessible to the appropriate trusted adult.
- Separate private and shared information. Put household credentials in a shared vault or collection and leave personal accounts private. Give children access only to the items they need, using the plan’s available controls.
- Plan recovery before an emergency. Decide which trusted adult can help if the organizer loses access. Configure any recovery or emergency-access feature available in the selected service, then test the process while everyone can still sign in.
- Review alerts and password health. Use breach, weak-password or reused-password notifications if included. When a credential is exposed or reused, change it on the underlying website and update the saved entry.
Sharing a password-manager account is not the same as sharing a particular credential. Whenever possible, use the manager’s shared-vault feature so household members can receive appropriate access without learning the organizer’s master password.
What should a small business do before inviting employees?
Set up ownership and offboarding rules before the vault becomes the company’s informal directory of critical accounts. Decide who administers it, which roles need access and how access will be removed when a person changes role or leaves.
- Choose an accountable owner. Assign an administrator and a backup, using company-controlled accounts and recovery arrangements rather than relying on one employee’s personal email or device.
- Organize shared credentials by need. Group access around teams or responsibilities. Do not grant every employee access to every credential just because it is convenient at setup.
- Use available administration tools. If the plan offers centralized ownership, event logs, directory sync or SCIM, check how those features map to your identity and onboarding process. Confirm what is included before assuming automated provisioning or monitoring is available.
- Document the departure process. Remove the person’s manager account or team access, review shared items they could access, and rotate credentials when a departing user knew a shared password that cannot be individually revoked.
- Make a protected export and recovery plan. Establish who may export vault data, how a backup is protected, and how to retrieve it if administrators are unavailable. Test the plan without exposing the backup to unauthorized users.
- Validate requirements with the vendor. If procurement depends on SSO, SCIM, data residency, audit evidence or a particular compliance commitment, get confirmation for the exact edition and contract under consideration.
Do password managers support passkeys and YubiKeys?
Leading password managers support passkeys, but the ability to create, autofill and sync them varies by browser and operating system. Test the complete sign-in flow on the specific phones, computers and browsers your household or team uses before moving an important account to a passkey.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A YubiKey is a hardware security key example for stronger MFA. Check that the chosen manager supports the key type you plan to use and that its connector works with your devices: USB-C, USB-A and NFC compatibility are not interchangeable. Keep a protected spare key and confirm your account recovery method still works if the primary key is lost. A security key helps protect sign-in to an account; it does not remove the need for a strong master password or a tested recovery plan.
How do you switch password managers without losing access?
Prepare before canceling the old service. Exports can contain sensitive data in a portable form, so treat the file as a temporary copy of your vault rather than an ordinary document.

- Secure a backup. Export from the old manager using its supported process and keep the file in a protected location accessible only to the people responsible for migration. Do not send an unprotected export through email or chat.
- Import and inspect. Follow the new provider’s current import instructions. Check a sample of logins, notes and shared entries for missing fields or incorrect organization before relying on the new vault.
- Test sign-in and autofill. Confirm the new apps and browser extensions work across the household’s or company’s actual devices. Test important accounts manually, including MFA, before removing the old manager.
- Recreate sharing deliberately. Set up private and shared vaults or collections and invite only the intended users. Do not assume an import preserves the old service’s access permissions.
- Close out the old service safely. Once the new setup is verified, remove remaining copies of the export from temporary locations, cancel or close the old account as appropriate, and rotate any credentials exposed during an insecure transfer.
Which alternative family plans deserve a closer look?
NordPass, Proton Pass and Dashlane are reasonable alternatives when a household’s priorities are ease of use, a broader privacy-service bundle or a larger stated seat count. They should be treated as options to verify, not as a definitive ranking: the available comparison does not provide a full, current feature matrix for all three.
Reviewed’s May 2026 comparison lists NordPass Family at $3.99 per month for up to six users, Proton Pass Family at $7.99 per month for up to six and Dashlane Family at $7.49 per month for up to ten. These are dated snapshots. Before selecting any of them, check the vendor’s current price, renewal terms, shared-vault model, device limits, recovery options and passkey behavior for your specific devices.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a password manager autofill on every website?
Not necessarily. Autofill depends on the browser, operating system and site, so a family or company should test important logins before relying on it. If a login page behaves unexpectedly, use the manager’s app or extension to inspect the saved entry rather than approving a prompt solely because it appeared.
Should a family put its Wi-Fi password in a shared vault?
That can be convenient when the household has chosen to share it, but access should still be limited to the people who need it. If the password changes, update the saved record and any devices that rely on the old one.
Can a business use a family plan for its employees?
A family plan is designed around household seats and sharing, not necessarily company ownership, administration or employee departure workflows. A business should confirm that its plan supports the access management and contractual requirements it actually needs.
Do I need to change every password when I switch managers?
A normal, protected export and import does not by itself require changing every credential. Prioritize changing passwords that were reused, exposed in an unprotected export or otherwise suspected of being compromised.
